ANNUAL HOMEOWNERS’ ASSOCIATION MEETING The date for the Annual Meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 7:00 PM. The meeting will take place at the Cinco Ranch Church of Christ, located adjacent to the subdivision at 6655 S. Mason Road. Please plan to attend.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS/DÉCOR Please note that our deed restrictions do not allow holiday lights and/or décor to be displayed before the day after Thanksgiving. Conversely, we ask that it be removed

by January 15th of the new year. Please remember that holiday decorations should not be so excessive as to cause a nuisance to neighboring homes.

Please remember that school will be out of session early on December 16th through January 3rd. Use extra caution when driving in and around the community, as there will be many children out and about.

School being out of session sometimes can mean an increase in other “unconstructive” happenings. Please remember that we need to be more security conscious than usual at Christmas - be sure to remove any valuables from your vehicles and lock

your vehicle doors - as well as those of your home. Most thieves are opportunistic - so don’t give them the opportunity!

In the past, some residents in the community have experienced vandalism of their holiday decorations. While teens may think it is amusing to damage inflatable decorations or reposition things, it is usually upsetting to the resident and can be expensive. Please pass the word that this is not in the spirit of the season and if kids are caught vandalizing holiday décor, charges may be filed against them by the owner of the decorations.

2012 ASSESSMENTS DUE JANUARY 31, 2012 A $50 discount is offered for those who pay by January 31, 2012 this now includes credit card payments, as well as cash or check (a 3% transaction fee will be applied for credit card payments or e-checks).

Dues can be paid with your Visa or MasterCard - either in person at the onsite office or via the website at www.canyongateatcincoranch. com. Interest starts accruing March 1st.

PAYMENT PLANS ARE AVAILABLE Payment plans are available by calling or emailing the onsite office.

You must call or email to request the plan - it will not be set up automatically. The earlier you call to set up a plan, the easier it will be to work the plan into your budget. The board is willing to work with those having financial difficulties, but urges all homeowners to set a plan up early and keep up with the payments.

Please note that delinquent accounts get sent to the attorney for collection on April 1st. Payment plans must be set up (and the first payment received) before April 1st to avoid collection.

RECREATION CENTER RENTAL The recreation center has a room available for parties, meeting, reunions, etc. A signed contract plus a $300 security deposit will hold your reservation. Homeowners must be current on their dues (or payment plans) and rental fees must be received prior to the party. The rental rate is $35 an hour with a twohour minimum. The key for the clubhouse is to be signed out and returned to the guards in the guardhouse. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules and regulations stipulated in the contract will be enforced. Call the onsite office for additional information.

Remember to bring your trash home with you after a party - the clubhouse trashcans are being filled to overflowing regularly.

Fines will start being assessed if the recreation center trashcans are filled up with party debris.

WILDLIFE Please note that residents in nearby subdivisions have reported sighting of coyotes. All residents should be on the lookout and keep a careful watch on their pets, especially near the banks of bayous. Coyotes usually stay away from humans; however, apparently, due to the extreme drought, these predators are coming closer to human habitation looking for food and water.

They are wild animals and when hungry or cornered, may be very aggressive. Small dogs and cats can be very susceptible. If you have pets outside, please try to make arrangements for them to be inside or in a protective enclosure. If you let your pets outside to attend to their business, please don’t leave them long. We do not want another pet to fall victim.

Now is also a good time to check the integrity of your fence - even if you don’t live near the edge of the community. Coyotes can’t get into back yards unless boards are broken and missing or the fence is in need of repair.

While coyotes are wild animals and therefore, unpredictable, they are generally skittish and normally run from humans. Coyotes, along with other predators, do play a vital role in the ecosystem; “thinning out” the coyote population may actually have a detrimental effect by allowing the rodent population (and other pests) to proliferate.

Snakes

Homeowners need to be aware that Texas is home to many snakes, including venomous and non-venomous varieties. With the natural areas surrounding the community, Canyon Gate is especially prone to snakes. Please be vigilant when in grassy areas that snakes may hide. If you should see a snake, please do not approach it - they will not normally attack or bite unless provoked. Measures you can take to keep snakes away include the following: • Eliminate debris such as wood or rock piles on the property.

• Cut down heavy brush or trim back hedges.

• Seal small gaps under doors or decks, etc.

HARRIS COUNTY TOLL TAGS Please call the onsite office (281-492-6020) or email us to register your Harris County toll tag (phardilek@ccbpropertymanagement. com). The following information is required: Name, Address, Vehicle Make & Model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. Please do not give tag information to the guards - they do not have access to the gate computer. PLEASE REMEMBER to have your old tag number available when you are registering a new tag, so we can remove it from the system.

The sticker-type EZ tags can be programmed into the system.

However, the signal is not as powerful as that of the battery-powered tags. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate.

REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM - 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense.

These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problem-free residential access for emergency vehicles.

Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns.

Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordinance. Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Angle or perpendicular parking may prohibit police, fire or any other emergency personnel from ingress or egress.

Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation.

There is NO PARKING anytime in bicycle lanes. Exceptions to the street parking policy are made only to out of town guests with PRIOR NOTICE given to the office at 281-492-6020. Be sure to give your name and home address, the year, make, model and license plate number of the car, as well as the specific dates that car will be parked in the street.

FITNESS CENTER/RECREATION CENTER LOBBY Anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed in the fitness center unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. The recreation center lobby is not to be used as a gathering place for kids to socialize.

The Association is asking for all homeowners who use these facilities to help with watching over these areas. If a child is under the age of 18 and is in the fitness center without a parent or guardian or appears to be simply loitering in the lobby, please politely ask them to leave. Thank you.

The Homeowners’ Association sells EZ tags that will open the resident gate at the Canyon Gate entrance. Residents may purchase these at the onsite office for $35. These EZ tags contain a battery that should last for, approximately, 3 years. The HOA offers a oneyear warranty on these tags. If the battery goes bad and your EZ tag stops working within the first year, the tag will be replaced at no cost. If your EZ tag stops working after the one-year time limit, a new EZ tag will need to be purchased.

STREET LIGHT MAINTENANCE To report a streetlight that is not working, call CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222. You will need to report both the number on the base of the pole (six digits) and the street address. You may also report outages online at www.centerpointenergy.com/outage.

Eat before you go to a party. This is one of the best tricks to avoid overeating at gatherings. Add fiber rich foods (ex. 100% whole wheat) to whatever you eat so you’ll feel full. Plus, eating fruit will help curb that sweet tooth.

Get up and move! Saying you’re too busy is not an explanation - it’s an excuse. You can exercise inside and outside the home - hit the gym, walking/running, tennis, bootcamp, yoga, jump rope, biking, anything. Most cable/dish networks even offer a fitness channel.

Get moving. No excuses!

Pre-cut your foods. Pre-cut your foods to turn 1 piece into 2, 3 or more pieces. Your plate looks fuller meaning you have enough food and won’t crave seconds. One tortilla chip can be broken into 4 or more pieces to avoid eating too many and dipping too much.

Keep a food journal. Write down everything, starting NOW, that you eat. Review your entries daily and see what needs to be added and taken out of your diet.

Don’t bring it home. Tempted by chips? Cookies? Pumpkin pie?

Don’t buy it when at the market. Even better - avoid those aisles when shopping for food.

Beat the Holiday Blues Check out these few tips on how to beat the holiday blues and be happy!

• Be realistic. Some people experience not enough family, fun, and friendship so be kind to yourself.

• Create your own traditions. As families change and grow, traditions change, too. As long as you do the traditions with a joyful heart, the celebrations you create will become your family’s cherished rituals.

• Help others. It is the best antidote to self-pity and seasonal sadness. Find someone who is struggling more than you are, lend them a helping hand and remember the real meaning of the holidays.

• Seek sacred space. Visit a place of worship. Simply sitting in a sacred space can remind you of the true meaning of the holidays.

• Take care of your body. Eat well, drink plenty of water, exercise and get plenty of rest. The littlest bit of movement will lift your spirits and reducing the amount of junk food, sugar and alcohol you consume will reduce your blues.

• Be financially responsible. Overspending during the holidays will not only increase your stress now, but will also leave you feeling anxious as you struggle to pay the bills. Buck the holiday system of excessive gift-giving and practice simplicity, creativity and basic human kindness.

• Grieve. If a friend or family member has recently died, honor their memory. Create an altar with pictures of those you love; light candles every night for someone you have lost; play sacred music and allow yourself to cry, remember, heal.

• Forgive. Forgive all sorts of people this holiday season. Read the stories of who have used forgiveness to move mountains. If they can do it, so can we.

• Love... everything. Love it all. From the corny Christmas music to the house guests who won’t leave. Love even the hard times; even the cranky and crooked people of the world; even yourself, with all of your imperfections.

Eat THIS, not THAT for the Holidays!

‘Tis the season of over-indulgence in rich, delicious and unhealthy food. But panic not. You can still enjoy all the goodies of the season, thanks to sensible eating. Here are healthy eating tips for the Christmas season.

• Feast for a couple of days, then return to normal. Buy less and don’t let the holiday season turn into an excuse for a month of bingeing.

• Cut up a box of mini-sticks of celery and nibble on them when you need a snack. Celery keeps blood pressure low, and helps lower cholesterol too.

• Keep reading the labels, but don’t be fooled. Are ‘lite’ potato chips or crisps really a great health option? Yes, you could save a worthwhile 20 calories on a packet - but they’re still a high-fat food, so go easy.

• Out of sight is out of mouth. Hide away indulgent puddings, cream and other temptations in the salad drawer, so they don’t beckon every time you open the fridge door.

• Brazil nuts are rich in selenium, which improves mood and reduces anxiety. Eat just 3 a day.

• If you’re used to working out, have a vigorous session the day before a feast and you’ll burn extra calories more efficiently.

• Cinnamon balances blood sugar and reduces ill effects of sweet foods. Stir a little into tea or coffee.

• Watch portion sizes like a hawk. Forego the extra spoonful, the second mince pie, never pile food high. Enjoy everything, say no to nothing - but do it all in moderation.

• At the supermarket, avoid huge ‘bargain’ packs of special nuts, biscuits etc. Buy smaller sizes and cut the temptation.

• Serve two vegetables with each meal (try not to smother them in cream sauce) and put salad greens in every sandwich.

Ingredients: 2 cup crushed graham crackers 1/4 cup powdered sugar 1/2 cup butter 1 can sweetened condensed milk 8 oz. pkg. coconut (2 1/2 cups) 1 12 oz. package real chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS: Mix graham crackers, powdered sugar and melted butter and pat into 9 x 13 pan. Bake 12 minutes at 350°F. Mix condensed milk and coconut together and spread over crust.

Bake 12 minutes at 350°F. Remove from oven. Sprinkle with real chocolate chips. Spread when melted. Cool and cut into squares.

Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter 1 Egg 1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1 1/2 cup flour 1 cup chopped pecans

DIRECTIONS: Heat oven to 350°F. Cream butter, sugar and egg. Stir in flour, vanilla and pecans. Mix well by hand. Shape into balls about the size of walnuts, place on cookie sheets and flatten to about 1/8 inch. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely and harden.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER • If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product.

Keep flowers picked for more bloom.

• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.

• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.

• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again.

• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.

• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.

• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds.

Distilled from the U.S. Flag Code, at www.ushistory.org: The U.S. Flag, a representative symbol of a living country, should be treated as a living thing and cared for as such; • The U.S. Flag should never touch anything beneath it, including the ground; • The U.S. Flag traditionally is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset; • The U.S. Flag must be properly illuminated if flown at night; • The U.S. Flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously; • The U.S. Flag should not be displayed on days when weather is inclement; (except if it is made of all-weather material); • If a State flag is also to be flown from the same mast, the U.S. Flag must be equal to or larger than the State flag; the U.S. Flag must always be at the top on the same halyard or raised first and lowered last if flags are on separate halyards.

HOW TO HOST A COOKIE EXCHANGE ON A BUDGET 1. Send Evites or emails to guests in order to save money on the cost of invitations and postage. If you ask each guest to bring 6-dozen cookies and there are ten people at the exchange that means you’ll have 720 cookies. Assuming each person takes home 5-dozen cookies, you will still have 120 leftover for tasting. It is important to let the guests know the exact amount of cookies to bring.

2. Invite moms only, if possible. This way, you’re not distracted by having to follow toddlers around and you don’t feel compelled to serve snacks for kids of varying ages.

3. Nearly all types of cookies work well for a cookie exchange, though it’s best to avoid any that are extremely delicate as they can get crushed by the sturdier kinds. It’s also a good idea to steer clear of cookies that need to be refrigerated, such as lemon bars.

4. You want to know the ingredients that raise the price of certain cookie recipes? Nuts, chocolate, and liqueur – just to name a few. Mexican wedding cakes are delicious, for example, but the pecans alone can cost $6 for half a pound. If you really want to make a pricey cookie like mini pecan pie tarts, go ahead, but just shape or cut them smaller.

5. If you don’t have the time or the inclination to roll and cut out dough, simply dress up old favorites like chocolate chip drop cookies by sprinkling them with red or green colored sugar. A bottle of decorating sugar costs under $3 and will last you.

7. Another budget-priced cookie is the bar cookie. Make a batch of brownies from a mix and add a teaspoon of mint extract.

Make an easy icing (confectioners’ sugar, a tablespoon of butter and milk) and tint it green using food coloring, with a dash of mint extract added for flavor.. You can add red sprinkles or chocolate jimmies, just to add that little extra something.

8. Flavor extracts are inexpensive, but can add a lot of flavor.

Make thumbprint cookies, but add a teaspoon of rum extract to the dough and half a teaspoon of rum extract to the icing. Or, add mint extract to your basic sugar cookie dough, roll out into candy cane shapes and bake. After you frost them, top with candy canes that you have crushed in the food processor or blender.

9. Try putting a holiday spin on economical old favorites like Rice Krispies treats. When you stir the cereal into the melted butterand-marshmallow mixture, add green, red, or a combination of both colored sprinkles to the mixture. Spread it into a greased pan and cut into diamond shapes when cool. You can also flatten these out and use a cookie cutter to cut into trees, bells or ornaments.

10. When it comes to inexpensive food coloring, a little goes a long way. Color basic snickerdoodle or sugar cookie dough green, roll them out into little balls and place on a baking sheet.

For beautiful holiday thumbprint cookies, make a tiny indentation in each cookie before baking and fill it with raspberry or strawberry jam.

11. If you’re really pressed for time, to the point where time is money, don’t be afraid to buy the refrigerated rolls of cookie dough and infuse them with your own special touches. Top chocolate chip cookies with some unwrapped, melted caramels, mini marshmallows and chocolate-coated chocolate candies, then bake another minute or until the marshmallows are golden – no one is likely to have also made this creative and delicious treat.

12. Keep the refreshments light. For an afternoon cookie exchange you can serve tea, coffee (add a cinnamon stick to the coffee before you brew it) and maybe hot cider (buy the store brand by the gallon and warm it on the stove or in a slow cooker, with a couple of cinnamon sticks.) Have a bowl of seasonal fruit (grapes and clementines provide color) and maybe a wedge or two of a not so costly cheese for those that need a break from the sweets.

13. Be sure to tell each guest to bring along copies of their recipe and put them right on the table next to their variety of cookie.

14. Have everyone in your exchange bring just one or two extra dozen cookies and you can make up plates of cookies for homebound elderly or residents at homeless shelters. Encourage everyone to bring some canned food and you can donate these to a local soup kitchen, as well.

After the party has cleared and you present your family with a huge tray of holiday treats, they will be thrilled. You’re giving them cookies that look and taste store bought, but were actually made with a secret ingredient: love. And that’s really what this holiday season is all about. Enjoy!

Two Churches, One Message: LDS and Catholic Churches Present Annual Christmas Concert The combined choirs of Epiphany Catholic Church and the Katy Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will present their annual Christmas concert on Sunday, December 11, 2011, 7:30 PM, at Epiphany Catholic Church - 1603 Norwalk Drive in Katy. Houston Fire Fighters Making Houston the City with the Biggest Heart FOR MDA It’s official, Houstonians through the Houston Fire Fighters raised a record breaking $509,961 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association making them the #1 Fill-the-Boot department in the country for the last 9 out of 10 years raising more than $6.3 million during that time.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-theBoot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Pack 780 Cub Scouts Tour Texas Children’s Hospital The Webelos Den (10-year-olds) from Cub Scout Pack 780 recently toured the Emergency Room of the West Houston campus of Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Todd Johnson, a physician at the hospital and a father of one of the Scouts, led the tour. While in the hospital, the boys learned about different life saving equipment and procedures and also practiced first aid techniques.

BOY SCOUTS CRHS student Andrew Vogel Earns Eagle Rank Andrew Vogel, a member of Boy Scout Troop 73, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle project, Andrew resurfaced part of the walking trails of the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. By covering up the existing crushed concrete with decomposed granite, the resurfacing project offers universal accessibility to people in wheelchairs, children in strollers and emergency vehicles. Andrew has held numerous leadership positions within his troop, such as Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader and Order of the Arrow Representative. He is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. He has also earned over 100 merit badges. Andrew completed his Eagle project earlier this year, while he was in the tenth grade. Andrew is currently a junior at Cinco Ranch High School. Troop 73 is chartered through Memorial Lutheran Church of Katy.

PACK 542 HONORS THOMAS PARK WITH A TREE FOR ARBOR DAY Thomas Park in Old Katy will be a little more colorful this fall thanks to efforts of the Cub Scouts of Pack 542. The Scouts spent a sunny Sunday afternoon planting a tree in honor of Arbor Day. Not only will the tree planting help beautify Thomas Park, but it helped the Scouts develop a sense of community involvement and giving back through service to the community. The kids put some effort into life and they will see the benefits down the road, especially when they return to visit the Park after many years.

CRHS student Christin Vogel Earns Silver Award Christin Vogel, a member of Girl Scout Troop 17229, recently earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest recognition a Cadette Girl Scout can achieve. Her project consisted of conducting book drives and creating activity kits. Christin held two different book drives. The children’s books were donated to the Harris County Hospital District. The teens’ books were donated to the Krause Center in Katy. The activity kits were assembled and divided according to age and gender; they benefitted the children coming into Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus Emergency Center. Christin also donated band-aids, stickers and bubbles to the TCH Emergency Center. Christin completed her Silver Award project earlier this year, while she was in the eighth grade. Christin is currently a freshman at Cinco Ranch High School.

Church members from the Katy 3rd and 4th wards, two congregations from the south Katy area, provided food and drinks for the participants. The LDS volunteers also came to support the residents with cheering and encouragement. After the bike rally, the Katy churches provided a carnival with games and activities for the residents at the Brookwood community.

This event was part of a broader Houston-wide “Day of Service” in which many Houston area Latter-day Saint congregations participated.

The Brookwood community is located in Brookshire, Texas and provides an educational environment that creates meaningful jobs, builds a sense of belonging and demands dignity and respect for adults with disabilities.

Fort Bend House of Hope - Bringing Healing and Restoration to Hurting Teens and Their Families House of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christ-centered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! The next training will be in January. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. RUOK Program

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return.

If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Acad-

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current.

• Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident.

• Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.

VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
