HOLIDAY LIGHTS/DÉCOR Please note that our deed restrictions do not allow holiday lights and/or décor to be displayed before the day after Thanksgiving. Conversely, we ask that it be removed by January 15th of the new year. Please remember that holiday decorations should not be so excessive as to cause a nuisance to neighboring homes.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR The current Board of Directors would like to extend warm holiday greetings to all Canyon Gate residents. Please remember that school will be out of session early on December 16th through January 3rd. Use extra caution when driving in and around the community, as there will be many children out and about. School being out of session sometimes can mean an increase in other “unconstructive” happenings. Please remember that we need to be more security conscious than usual at Christmas - be sure to remove any valuables from your vehicles and lock your vehicle doors - as well as those of your home. Most thieves are opportunistic - so don’t give them the opportunity! In the past, some residents in the community have experienced vandalism of their holiday decorations. While teens may think it is amusing to damage inflatable decorations or reposition things, it is usually upsetting to the resident and can be expensive. Please pass the word that this is not in the spirit of the season and if kids are caught vandalizing holiday décor, charges may be filed against them by the owner of the decorations.

2012 ASSESSMENTS DUE JANUARY 31, 2012 A $50 discount ($1,010) is offered for those who pay by January 31, 2012 - this now includes credit card payments, as well as cash or check (a 3% transaction fee will be applied for credit card payments or e-checks). Dues can be paid with your Visa or MasterCard - either in person at the onsite office or via the website at www.canyongateatcincoranch. com. Interest starts accruing March 1st.

PAYMENT PLANS ARE AVAILABLE Payment plans are available by calling or emailing the onsite office. You must call or email to request the plan - it will not be set up automatically. The earlier you call to set up a plan, the easier it will be to work the plan into your budget. The board is willing to work with those having financial difficulties, but urges all homeowners to set a plan up early and keep up with the payments. Please note that delinquent accounts get sent to the attorney for collection on April 1st. Payment plans must be set up (and the first payment received) before April 1st to avoid collection.

DEED RESTRICTIONS We are still working on getting homeowners to replace grass that died over the summer due to lack of water. There are also some yards that have no grass simply because the trees don’t allow sunlight to reach it (St. Augustine grass requires sun). Many trees need to have limbs trimmed so the foliage is thinned out enough to allow sunlight to reach the grass. We have been and will continue to cite homes with little to no grass or just dirt for their yards. Winter is as good a time to re-sod your lawn as the spring - sod is usually available in our area year round and while it must be watered regularly (kept moist) until well established, it certainly won’t require as much water as it will during hotter months. Please take care of your yard earlier rather than later - you may face fines or legal fees if it isn’t taken care of. It was also noted during recent inspections that many people (or their guests) are parking in cul de sacs in a perpendicular manner - which is illegal. Please be sure to park parallel to the curb (both wheels should be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb); this will allow emergency vehicles to enter cul de sacs easily should the need arise. The board has been noticing more and more garden decorations (i.e. figurines, signs, statues, etc.). While our restrictions don’t regulate the number of figures, we are receiving complaints about some yards with large numbers of pieces. We ask all residents to cast a critical eye at their front yards and limit the number of ornaments displayed. We have also received complaints about vehicles with loud stereos - if you have a teen driver, please remind them (and their friends) to keep the music down to a reasonable level while in the community.

281-646-1388 www . BASCOOLING . com

WILDLIFE Please note that residents in nearby subdivisions have reported sighting of coyotes. All residents should be on the lookout and keep a careful watch on their pets, especially near the banks of bayous. Coyotes usually stay away from humans; however, apparently, due to the extreme drought, these predators are coming closer to human habitation looking for food and water. They are wild animals and when hungry or cornered, may be very aggressive. Small dogs and cats can be very susceptible. If you have pets outside, please try to make arrangements for them to be inside or in a protective enclosure. If you let your pets outside to attend to their business, please don’t leave them long. We do not want another pet to fall victim. Now is also a good time to check the integrity of your fence - even if you don’t live near the edge of the community. Coyotes can’t get into back yards unless boards are broken and missing or the fence is in need of repair. While coyotes are wild animals and therefore, unpredictable, they are generally skittish and normally run from humans. Coyotes, along with other predators, do play a vital role in the ecosystem; “thinning out” the coyote population may actually have a detrimental effect by allowing the rodent population (and other pests) to proliferate.

Snakes Homeowners need to be aware that Texas is home to many snakes, including venomous and non-venomous varieties. With the natural areas surrounding the community, Canyon Gate is especially prone to snakes. Please be vigilant when in grassy areas that snakes may hide. If you should see a snake, please do not approach it - they will not normally attack or bite unless provoked. Measures you can take to keep snakes away include the following: • Eliminate debris such as wood or rock piles on the property. • Cut down heavy brush or trim back hedges. • Seal small gaps under doors or decks, etc.

RECREATION CENTER RENTAL

Benjamin T. Po Jr., DDS

The recreation center has a room available for parties, meeting, reunions, etc. A signed contract plus a $300 security deposit will hold your reservation. Homeowners must be current on their dues (or payment plans) and rental fees must be received prior to the party. The rental rate is $35 an hour with a two-hour minimum. The key for the clubhouse is to be signed out and returned to the guards in the guardhouse. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules and regulations stipulated in the contract will be enforced. Call the onsite office for additional information.

24022 Cinco Village Center Blvd. Suite 210 • Katy, TX 77494

Remember to bring your trash home with you after a party - the clubhouse trashcans are being filled to overflowing regularly. Fines will start being assessed if the recreation center trashcans are filled up with party debris.

HARRIS COUNTY TOLL TAGS Please call the onsite office (281-492-6020) or email us to register your Harris County toll tag (phardilek@ccbpropertymanagement. com). The following information is required: Name, Address, Vehicle Make & Model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. Please do not give tag information to the guards - they do not have access to the gate computer. PLEASE REMEMBER to have your old tag number available when you are registering a new tag, so we can remove it from the system. The sticker-type EZ tags can be programmed into the system. However, the signal is not as powerful as that of the battery-powered tags. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate.

REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM - 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problem-free residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns. Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordinance. Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Angle or perpendicular parking may prohibit police, fire or any other emergency personnel from ingress or egress. Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation. There is NO PARKING anytime in bicycle lanes. Exceptions to the street parking policy are made only to out of town guests with PRIOR NOTICE given to the office at 281-492-6020. Be sure to give your name and home address, the year, make, model and license plate number of the car, as well as the specific dates that car will be parked in the street.

FITNESS CENTER/RECREATION CENTER LOBBY

Anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed in the fitness center unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. The recreation center lobby is not to be used as a gathering place for kids to socialize. The Association is asking for all homeowners who use these facilities to help with watching over these areas. If a child is under the age of 18 and is in the fitness center without a parent or guardian or appears to be simply loitering in the lobby, please politely ask them to leave. Thank you.

Texas Brisket INGREDIENTS: 3 1/2 fluid ounces liquid smoke flavoring 1/4 cup ketchup 1 (10 fluid ounce) bottle steak sauce, (e.g. Heinz 57) 1 (3 pound) beef brisket DIRECTIONS: Line a shallow roasting pan with aluminum foil. Place the brisket on the foil. Stir together the steak sauce, liquid smoke and ketchup. Pour half of the mixture over the brisket, then turn the meat over and pour sauce over the other side. Wrap tightly in a double layer of aluminum foil. Refrigerate for at least 24 hours. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Let the roast stand at room temperature while the oven preheats to take off some of the chill. Bake for 6 or 7 hours in the preheated oven. You can leave it in even longer if you turn the oven down to 200 degrees F (95 degrees C). Remove brisket from the oven and slice across the grain. Return to the roasting pan and serve with sauce. Popular New Year’s Resolutions for 2012!

OL o SCHO

f

LLENCE E C X E

Check out some New Year’s resolutions that are popular year after year. • Drink Less Alcohol • Get a Better Education • Get a Better Job • Get Fit • Lose Weight • Manage Debt • Manage Stress • Quit Smoking • Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle • Save Money • Take a Trip • Volunteer to Help Others

Lose Weight the Healthy Way! While there is no “one size fits all” solution to permanent healthy weight loss, the following guidelines are a great place to start: • Think lifestyle change, not short-term diet. Think about weight loss as a permanent lifestyle change - a commitment to your health for life. Various popular diets can help to jumpstart your weight loss, but permanent changes in your lifestyle and food choices are what will work in the long run. • Find a cheering section. Social support means a lot. Seek out support - whether in the form of family, friends, or a support group - so that you can get the encouragement you need. • Slow and steady wins the race. Aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week to ensure healthy weight loss. Losing weight too fast can take a toll on your mind and body, making you feel sluggish, drained and sick. When you drop a lot of weight quickly, you’re actually losing mostly water and muscle, rather than fat. • Set goals to keep you motivated. Short-term goals, like wanting to fit into a bikini for the summer, usually don’t work as well as goals like wanting to feel more confident or become healthier for your children’s sakes. When frustration and temptation strike, concentrate on the many benefits you will reap from being healthier and leaner. • Use tools that help you track your progress. Keep a food journal and weigh yourself regularly, keeping track of each pound you lose and inch of your waist lost. By keeping track of your weight loss efforts, you’ll see the results in black and white, which will help you stay motivated.

Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Legacy

Mason Road

It’s difficult to sum up the contributions of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. in a single day, but it is, nevertheless, a positive thing that America has an official holiday to honor his accomplishments and vision. This special commemoration is generally celebrated on the third Monday of the month of January. In 2012, this commemoration will take place January 16th. Westpark Toll

Road Grand Missi on Blvd

The purpose of Martin Luther King Day is to mark the tremendous legacy of an American who fought for freedom, racial equality, justice and peace, never espousing his goals with hatred or violence. He endured many difficulties with amazing courage and worked with the hope of bringing people together in unity. Observations vary from state-to-state, in that some states close schools to honor the holiday, while others still hold classes, but mark the day with special programs, lessons, activities and the like. Special activities are held throughout the country to celebrate Dr. King’s life and contributions.

For further information, email ajmorrow1311@att.net.

DRYER SAFETY TIPS Each year, on average, clogged clothes dryer vents cause over 12,500 house fires, 15 deaths and 400 injuries. Oddly enough, some of the innovative designs of the newest homes put those homeowners at the highest risk. Anytime your dryer vent goes up instead of only parallel to the ground in order to vent out, you have a higher risk of fire.

Here are some helpful hints in order to lower your risks: - Clean the lint screen/filter before or after drying each load of clothes. If clothing is still damp at the end of a typical drying cycle or drying requires longer times than normal, this may be a sign that the lint screen or the exhaust duct is blocked. - Clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct periodically. Check the outside dryer vent while the dryer is operating to make sure exhaust air is escaping. If it is not, the vent or the exhaust duct may be blocked. To remove a blockage in the exhaust path, it may be necessary to disconnect the exhaust duct from the dryer. Remember to reconnect the ducting to the dryer and outside vent before using the dryer again. - Clean behind the dryer, where lint can build up. Have a qualified service person clean the interior of the dryer chassis periodically to minimize the amount of lint accumulation. Keep the area around the dryer clean and free of clutter. - Replace plastic or foil, accordion-type ducting material with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct. Most manufacturers specify the use of a rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct, which provides maximum airflow. The flexible plastic or foil type duct can more easily trap lint and is more susceptible to kinks or crushing, which can greatly reduce the airflow. - Take special care when drying clothes that have been soiled with volatile chemicals such as gasoline, cooking oils, cleaning agents, or finishing oils and stains. If possible, wash the clothing more than once to minimize the amount of volatile chemicals on the clothes and, preferably, hang the clothes to dry. If using a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and a drying cycle that has a cool-down period at the end of the cycle. To prevent clothes from igniting after drying, do not leave the dried clothes in the dryer or piled in a laundry basket. Fires have been known to ignite in clothes up to 45 minutes after the drying cycle has ended. Visit the FEMA website to learn more, www.fema.gov. Submitted by Dale Ross.

KEYS Mentoring

One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child. To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

Demographic Update Shows Continued Growth for Katy ISD

During the October 24th Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Pat Guseman, president of Population and Survey Analysts (PASA), presented the 2011 Demographic Update that shows steady growth for Katy ISD, at a rate of approximately three percent each year over the next five years. While slightly slower than the rapid growth experienced between 2001 and 2009, the report shows approximately 23,000 additional students moving to the district during the next 10 years. The district also announced that as part of the Long Range Facilities Plan process, Katy ISD has entered into the initial stages of the Attendance Boundary Modification (ABM) process. Last November, Katy ISD voters approved a bond referendum that included five new campuses – three elementary schools, one junior high and one high school. Four of the five campuses are set to open in fall 2012 and High School No. 7 is slated to open in fall 2013. Katy ISD is a TEA Recognized district serving more than 62,000 students. Covering 181 square miles west of downtown Houston, Katy ISD is comprised of 53 campuses and with more than 8,000 employees is one of the largest employers in the West Houston area.

As a KEYS sponsor, Firethorne is helping to create scholarships for students who have participated in KEYS through their senior year. This is the first year that PIE has opened sponsorship levels for KEYS, with 100 percent of the sponsorship dollars going directly to KEYS Scholarships. Former KEYS student Eduardo Reyes and his KEYS mentor Jim Burns visited Firethorne representatives last week to thank them for their generous support. The KEYS (Keep Encouraging Youth toward Success) mentor program is offered to Katy ISD students who are on the brink of success. Often, these students have been challenged by life circumstances outside of their control. Mentors meet with their students on campus each week during the school year, in between the school day.

When Reyes’ mentor first met him, it wasn’t with the intent of becoming his mentor, it was with the intent of helping him organize his backpack, locker and life. After several weeks of helping Reyes get organized, Burns naturally fell into the role of becoming his mentor. For the next six years, Burns helped Reyes recognize his gifts, talents, intelligence and encouraged him to pursue his dreams. Firethorne, a 1,400-acre residential community in Katy/Fulshear, is actively involved with Katy ISD through programs such as Junior Achievement and the Partners in Education annual Promise to Read and Food for Families programs. Firethorne is located near the crossroads of I-10 west and FM 1463. KEYS’ annual event Ties & Tiaras, hosted at Agave Road on March 1, 2012, will celebrate mentors while supporting the KEYS Scholarship Fund. LIBRARIES ANNOUNCE ADDITION OF FAMILY READING CLUB THIS WINTER The popularity of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Summer Reading Clubs for children, teens and adults has inspired the library system to add a similar program for families during the winter season. The Family Reading Club will begin on Saturday, January 21, 2012 and will continue for six weeks through March 3, 2012 at all branches in the Fort Bend County library system. This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who read 36 books or 6 hours – 6 books per week or 60 minutes per week – will be entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 5, 2012. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 20, 2012. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system. For more information, call the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677 or the library branch nearest you.

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. The next training will be in January. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. House of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christcentered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. We have certified F.AM.I.L.Y. Rules Counselors available to assist you. Our volunteers have been screened with background checks and approved by the Fort Bend Juvenile Probation Department. Did you know there is a support group for the Gifted and Talented Program in KISD? The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented is an advocacy organization dedicated to promoting quality educational services for the gifted students in the school district. The mission of the organization is to promote community awareness of the unique social, emotional and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students and to support the development of appropriate educational services to meet these needs. To function successfully as an advocacy organization, KPGT needs membership and volunteer support! Funded by membership dues, KPGT publishes a quarterly newsletter, “Connections” and is now on the web! KPGT advocates for the needs of our GT students by serving on district committees, panels at state GT conferences, the Parent Advisory Board and keeping abreast of legislative issues. KPGT works cooperatively with KISD to co-host events such as the very popular “Super Saturday” and the “Student Summer Scholarship Seminar.” Our non-profit organization offers summer scholarships and grants for innovative programs to the GT teachers in KISD. Won’t you show your support of our efforts and join KPGT today? Visit our website at www.kpgt.org for a printable membership form.

Join us from the beginning as we start to gather members and momentum to spread the word that it IS possible to reduce processed foods, remove flavored milk and increase fresh fruits and veggies. If you believe it is possible to feed school aged children something other than processed chicken nuggets, stuffed crust pizza and chocolate milk then please bring your energy, your ideas and your connections and join us! Our kids deserve the best, after all, that’s why we chose to put them in Katy ISD! For more information: merag94@gmail.com or find us on Facebook: Katy’s Own School Lunch Revolution.

How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions It’s a stark irony of the Western calendar that the odometer turns over smack dab in the middle of winter, the one time of the year when most people can’t rouse themselves to clean their bathrooms, much less make an ambitious, life-changing, behavioral U-turn. If you’re the type who likes to ring in the New Year with an engraved list of resolutions, read on for hints about how best to keep them. Aim low. It goes without saying that most New Year’s resolutions are easier announced (or written) than done, but if you set the bar too high, you’re doomed from the start. Instead of a sweeping declaration like “I will lose 30 pounds by April and finally fit into that dress,” target a goal that’s more attainable, like losing 10 or 15 pounds.

Don’t overload yourself. It’s difficult enough for the average person to follow through on one ambitious New Year’s resolution; why on earth would you saddle yourself with three or four? Choose the most pressing issue at hand losing weight, finding a girlfriend, improving your relationship with your parents and concentrate on that. Trying to do everything simultaneously practically guarantees failure across the board.

Tell everyone you know. One school of thought says that New Year’s resolutions are best kept to oneself, but look at it this way: the more people to whom you announce your resolution (say, to get out of your dead-end job by spring), the more people there’ll be to prod you along if you fall behind. There’s no shame in seeking help if you can’t accomplish your resolution on your own.

Reward yourself. Following through on a New Year’s resolution is rarely easy, so a little Pavlovian conditioning goes a long way. If you’ve resolved to shop less, stroke yourself for not buying those shoes by springing for a steaming hot cappuccino at the mall. If you’ve resolved to be nicer to people, buy yourself a nice jacket after enduring that tedious cocktail party without delivering any insults.

Wait until spring. Sometimes the best way to accomplish a New Year’s resolution is to make it at a time of year of your choosing, rather than the one dictated by the calendar. May 1st is a good alternate date, since the change of season will neatly coincide with the change you’re hoping to accomplish in yourself. By Bob Strauss, www.ehow.com.
