With the winter holiday season approaching, many people like to think of ways to give back to the community and those in need at this time of year. But with gift giving, winter holiday parties and other commitments also commanding your attention, it’s hard to find time to help others. Here are some tips to make giving back easy. In With The New, Out With The Old The winter holiday is a good time to go through the items you have in your home and decide if you no longer need them. With presents coming into your home, there’s a good possibility that you can get rid of some of your older things. You have many options for donating these used items: • As you take your fall clothes out of the closet and replace them with winter ones, ask yourself if you’ll wear them again. That’s especially true of winter coats and jackets, which are always in high demand at aid agencies. • For your old clothes, look for clothing drives. Many shelters and faith-based organizations accept donations year round and they make a strong push for more donations as the weather gets cooler. They appreciate it if you clean them before donating them. • For furniture, look to thrift shops or other non-profit organizations. Many of them will pick up your furniture for you, so call ahead and see if you can save yourself the trouble of lugging your furniture around. • As you’re shopping for your winter holiday dinners over the next couple of months, stop by the canned food aisle and pick up some extra food to give away. Donate them to organizations that support soup kitchens or run “meals on wheels” programs. • If you have older children, they probably have many toys they don’t play with anymore. Encourage them to choose some to give to kids who won’t be getting any new toys this time of year. Many organizations are especially in need of donated toys this time of year. • If you’ve been really good this year, perhaps someone will give you a new car, allowing you to donate your old one to a charity. In general, larger charitable organizations accept cars, and sometimes boats, as donations and some are even willing to pick it up for you. • Check Out Charities. One of the easiest ways to help others is to donate to charitable organizations. If you aren’t personally familiar with the organization you plan on giving to, check them out with your local Better Business Bureau to make sure your donation does as much good as you hope it will.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, can be thrilling and stressful all at the same time. With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on in-demand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier: Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping. This will make your day more organized, and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make. • Sign up for store e-mail updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale. • Print out any online coupons you may have. • Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Borders and Barnes & Noble offer such programs. • Consider outlet shopping. The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. This will not help your shopping, per se, but will make you feel happy and satisfied. • Get a good’s night sleep the night before. Thanks to all that food in your belly it shouldn’t be too hard to fall asleep. The Day Of Thanksgiving Day Sales: • Know exactly the time that the stores you want to hit are open, and go to the store that has the best deals, and/or the gift you want to get the most first. Be there at least a half-hour before it opens if the gift is popular. • Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior. • Be caffeinated and full – don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach. • Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathon-shopping day to grab some grub from the food court. • Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds. • Don’t worry about purchasing little gifts today, such as stocking stuffers, but rather focus on gifts that are bigger, harder to find, and more expensive. • Consider this a good day to look for that new winter coat or little black dress you need. Clothing sales are usually very good on Black Friday, because so many people are already in the stores looking for toys and gifts. • If a product is not available, but the store offers a rain check, take it. Preventing and Thawing Frozen Pipes

Homeowners in the south should give special attention to exposed water pipes during the winter months. Freezing pipes are a problem in warmer climates where they often run through un-insulated or under insulated attics or crawl spaces. Although we only have a few cold snaps per season, it’s still necessary to protect exposed water pipes. Leaving pipes unprotected can cause them to burst, which can result in a tremendous amount of damage to the home and the contents inside.

You can drastically reduce your chance of property damage by preparing your water pipes before a hard freeze. The following suggestions can help you accomplish this task.

• If you are going out of town and have a heat pump system, and if the temperature is forecast to be extremely low, you may need to switch the setting to emergency heat and reduce the thermostat setting to 55°F.

What Kind of Water Pipes Freeze and When? Water pipes have the potential to freeze and burst when the outside temperature reaches 20°F or below. Pipes that are most vulnerable to freeze are usually exposed to severe cold, such as: outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, water pipes in basements, water pipes in crawl spaces, water pipes in attics, water pipes in garages and water pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.

Thawing Frozen Pipes after the Storm If you suspect that the pipe is frozen, keep the faucet open. Water will begin to flow as you treat the frozen area, which will help to melt more ice in the pipe. Make sure you know where the main water valve is located outside of your home. The frozen pipe may already be broken and it will leak when the water is thawed. If this is the case, you’ll need to turn off the main water valve to your home until the leak is repaired.

Prepare While the Climate Is Warm Drain water from the swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines, following manufacturer’s or installer’s directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping. Remove and drain outdoor hoses. Store in a shed or garage. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs if possible. Cover hose bibs with insulated covers.

Apply heat to the frozen portion of the pipe. This can be accomplished by using the following sources of heat: a heating pad, electric hair dryer, a portable space heater or wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Make sure that electrical cords do not come into contact with water. Do not attempt to use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove or other open flame devices; they present a serious fire hazard as well as release lethal carbon monoxide fumes into the air.

Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located and are in unheated areas. Look in the basement, crawl space, attic, garage and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. A hot water supply line can freeze just as a cold water supply line can freeze if the water is not running through the pipe and the water temperature in the pipe is cold.

Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. Call a licensed plumber if you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not within reach or if you can’t get the pipe to thaw. Inspect all other faucets in your home to find out if additional pipes are frozen. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze also. www.texashelp.tamu.edu

Consider installing products made to insulate water pipes like a “pipe sleeve” or installing UL-listed “heat tape,” “heat cable,” or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Many products are available at your local building supplies retailer. Newspaper can also provide some protection to exposed pipes, as long as the cold temperatures are not frequent or prolonged. Take Action during Cold Weather • Keep the garage door closed if there are water supply lines located inside. • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing. • Keep the heating thermostat set at a consistent temperature both day and night. • If going out of town during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home. • Set the thermostat to a temperature no lower than 55°F, and open cabinet doors where there is plumbing.

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply.

• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

Super Heroes at Cypress Christian School

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman! Actually, it’s super men and women serving our community and nation who recently visited with Cypress Christian School elementary students. Staff Sergeant Jonathan Bolding, U.S. Army Special Forces, visited the second graders and answered their questions about his job as a communications specialist, about parachuting out of an airplane and about his deployment experience. A few days later, kindergarten students enjoyed a “show and tell” visit from Houston police officers who brought a police dog, motorcycle, patrol car, horses and as a very special treat, provided a police helicopter “fly by.” It was an exciting week on the CCS campus as students learned more about those who serve us so faithfully and met some of the “super heroes” that they pray for throughout the year.

Houston Christian Students Trek the Silk Road across China

A group of seventeen Houston Christian High School (HC) students traveled 2,000 miles to China to follow the Silk Road west, visiting breathtaking landmarks. Students saw the urban giant Beijing and then trekked both eastern and western ends of the Great Wall of China. Navigating the length

of the country, students learned about China’s history and culture and how it varies along the Silk Road. On the western end of China, students took a camel caravan across portions of the Gobi Desert - the fifth largest desert in the world, with sand dunes over 1,000 feet high! The trip was led by the Head of School, Dr. Steve Livingston, and is part of HC’s unique Globe Trek program designed to give students an opportunity to directly learn about other countries and cultures.

Rosehill Christian School cheerleaders recently returned from the National Cheerleaders Association Camp held in Waco, TX where they received numerous awards. They were honored to receive the coveted “Herkie Team Award.” The Herkie Award was given to the RCS Cheerleaders for exemplifying the qualities of leadership, values, teamwork and sportsmanship, which are an integral part of cheerleading and are the ideals on which NCA was founded. Rosehill also received other team awards including Superior ratings, the Motion Award and the SPOT Award. CFISD Receives State Comptroller 2011 Texas Honors Circle Award

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is one of only 46 recipients, among 1,237 public school districts and charter schools statewide, to receive a five-star rating for academic and financial performance from Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller. The Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST) assigned every school district in the state a rating from one to five stars, indicating success in combining costeffective spending with achievement of measurable student academic progress. A five-star rating reflects the strongest relative academic progress combined with the lowest relative spending. CFISD was one of 23 five-star districts to retain its designation for the second consecutive year. The Comptroller’s office ranked CFISD in the 91st percentile of composite progress, which, combined with a spending index of “Very Low,” amounted to the five-star rating. Recently, the Texas Education Agency released data that ranked CFISD’s administrative cost ratio as the lowest among Houston-area school districts. Administrative costs in the area range from the highest cost ratio (9.12 percent) in North Forest ISD to the lowest (3.67 percent) in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. Ratios are calculated comparing administrative to instructional-related costs. More comparative information is located on the district website.

In addition to the district’s recognition for operational efficiency and effectiveness, 33 CFISD schools also received the Texas Comptroller’s 2011 Texas Honors Circle Award for strong academic performance while spending relatively little compared to their peers statewide. Only 313 school campuses statewide received this distinction for high rankings received in the 2011 Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST), meaning CFISD accounted for 10.5 percent of all Honors Circle campuses in the state. Elementary campuses receiving the award achieved a five-star FAST rating, while middle and high school campuses tapped for the honor achieved at least a 4.5-star FAST rating. CY-RANCH ATTEND THE WALK OF REMEMBRANCE

Cypress Ranch High School Key Club members joined the Cypress and Coles Crossing community in a “Walk of Remembrance” to show that they will not forget the tragedy of 9/11. Cypress Cares, an organization dedicated to American troops, hosted the event and encouraged people from all over the area to walk the two-mile distance to remember the life-changing day, September 11th. Even more importantly, the trail walk was held to remember

MEGAN ISELIN ELECTED GOVERNOR OF THE TEXAS-OKLAHOMA KEY CLUB DISTRICT

Cypress Ranch senior, Megan Iselin, has recently been elected Governor of the Texas-Oklahoma Key Club District. Megan has hit the ground running attending the International Key Club Convention, as well as getting started with her own Governor’s project for the upcoming Key Club year.

During this year’s International Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, over a thousand Key Club members from all around the world were in attendance. The goals of the convention were to elect new International officers, update the Key Club bylaws, make new friends, enhance leadership skills, get the latest updates from the three official Key Club International service partners (UNICEF, March of Dimes, and Children’s Miracle Network) and begin plans for the Eliminate Project. Megan was closely involved in the Eliminate Project: which was set out to rid the world of maternal and neo-natal tetanus. Shortly after the International Convention, Megan met with her new Lieutenant Governors to begin her own personal project: Operation Overwatch. Megan’s goal for this project is to raise awareness of the hardships faced by active duty soldiers and their families back home. Megan has a close personal connection to this project, as her grandfather is a veteran and former Kiwanian. As Governor of the Texas Oklahoma District, Megan’s duties include coordinating and running board meetings and serving as the “middle man” between Key Club International. Megan oversees the second largest Key Club district in the world with over 300 Key Clubs in the two states and nearly 18,000 Key Clubbers. Being elected Governor of the second largest Key club district in the world is a huge accomplishment for Megan. Megan is taking this challenge headon and has already gotten off to an amazing start. KEY CLUB SOCIAL

On Tuesday August 16th, Cy-Ranch Key Club kicked off the new school year with their 4th annual Back-to-School Social. The event’s purpose was to give new and old members a chance to get to know one another and make new friends within the club. The social started off with some simple games to help break the ice, and then a little information was given about the club. The night was filled with fun games and a special service project where everyone sat down and wrote letters to soldiers deployed overseas. At the same time, parents were close by in an informational meeting given by Mrs. Hydes, the club faculty advisor and Megan Iselin, Governor of the Texas/Oklahoma Key Club district. During the meeting, parents learned everything there is to know about the Cypress Ranch Key Club: the foundations the club works with, the dates and times of major events and club requirements for their children. The event was finished with some cookies and lemonade for everyone who attended. The turnout at this year’s social was extraordinary and the CyRanch Key Club is already planning for an even bigger crowd next year! FIRST KEY CLUB MEETING OF THE YEAR

The new school year is finally here! It is back with excitement, but most importantly, it is now time for Key Club! The first Key Club meeting at Cypress Ranch High School was on September 7, 2011. During the first meeting of the year, the officers were able to introduce Key Club to new members; these included incoming freshmen and other students who were not members the year before. Afterwards, the members were introduced to the new officers for 2011-2012. After all of the introductions were finished, the next event was to further explain what exactly Key Club is. The members also got a deeper understanding about what is Key Club and the expectations for them. Members of the Cypress Ranch High School Key Club left the meeting completely enlightened. They are now more excited than ever and cannot wait to start volunteering at all service opportunities that this year will provide. Exciting Changes Ahead for CFSA Basketball Winter 2011 Season

Cy-Fair Sports Association will unveil new enhancements to the Basketball Program for the Winter 2011 season. Similar to the CFSA Baseball program, coaches will now be allowed to form “friendship” teams and play against other friendship teams. The “select” level of play will be expanded to achieve more competitive balance and will include a mid-season tournament with players outside the CFSA program. The traditional “classic” division will remain in place with teams selected based upon where players live and go to school. These changes will create a basketball experience that meets the diverse needs of the Cy-Fair community while continuing to attract new participants into the program. To many people, Christmas is just not Christmas without singing or hearing Handel’s Messiah. The gift is so simple but the impact is huge. Last year, Epiphany Lutheran Church participated in the project and the response was amazing. The church collected over 80 full boxes to ship overseas from the congregation alone. “We felt such a strong connection to this cause. It was truly moving,” remarks one Epiphany member. This year, Epiphany has decided to take advantage of its new, more visible location on West Rd. and Jackrabbit, to become a collection center for OCC. This means that during collection week, anyone who wishes to participate in OCC can drop of his or her donations to Epiphany Lutheran Church. The church will transport the collected items to the nearest distribution center. Collection week is November 14th - 21st. The Cy-Fair Holiday & Health Festival/Layla Grace 5K

The Cy-Fair Holiday & Health Festival and Layla Grace 5K will be held at the Berry Center on Dec. 3rd. This family-friendly, community event is free to the public and will feature over 100 exhibitors to help Cypress residents get into the holiday spirit and help raise money for a good cause. Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood. As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his
