Holiday Decorating

At this time of year, the stores are full of the holiday decorations for inside your home and out. So before you buy that wonderful decoration, remember the time frame for exterior decorating in Cinco Ranch. Per Article XII, Section 18, lights for the holiday season may be displayed two (2) months prior to and one (1) month after any commonly recognized holiday for which such lights are traditionally displayed. Decorating neighborhoods has become a Cinco Ranch tradition. Neighborhoods are transformed into enchanting displays of lights and ornaments. Please be aware of your decorations and how they will affect the neighborhood. Lights should be placed as not to impair traffic or your neighbor’s comfort. Timers on lights make it easy to guarantee lighting time. Large ornaments too close to sidewalks could cause a tripping hazard if knocked over by wind. A simple layout of your yard and decorations will help you eliminate hazardous possibilities. We all enjoy the holiday season and the decorations that add to the festivities. Please be aware of any additional items that are left in the yard that are not decoration, do not add to the holiday season and do not make our homes look the best they can. We all want our neighborhoods and houses to look the best they can all year long. Published by: Krenek Printing 7102 Glen Chase Ct • Houston, TX 77095 • 281-463-8649

NEW ELECTRICAL CONTRACTS FOR CINCO RANCH = CONSIDERABLE SAVINGS!

As part of the budget preparation for 2012, the Cinco Residential Property Association, Inc. (CRPA) Board of Directors instructed PCMI as managing agent, along with the support and assistance from the CRPA Finance and Audit Committee to research and to accumulate bids for a new electrical contract. Over fifteen (15) providers were solicited through direct quotations and through electrical service brokers to form a very competitive list of potential vendors. I am pleased to report that per these efforts that a reduction of over 46% was achieved in the overall cost of the contracts. Commercial electric rates have come down significantly. This is a substantial savings for the residents and commercial properties throughout Cinco and will continue to assist with keeping assessments in check. The 2012 budget has been placed on the website www.cincoranchlife.org which will outline budget in greater details. Several people were a part of this effort, but I would like to name two in particular for their great service to the Associations:

I would like to thank Steve Talecki for his great help in research and recommendations and Anna Agnew for her assistance in involving brokers to achieve competitive quotes. They were a great help to me and my assistant, Maggie McKay, during this process. Thank you, Jason Blackman

Parking in the Street

When a number of vehicles park in the street, emergency vehicles have a difficult task maneuvering down the street. Due to the size and clearance needs of these emergency vehicles, a street lined with parked cars obstructs the passage and delays response time. While it is understood that during certain events, vehicles parking on the street is an unavoidable circumstance, please be aware of clearance needed for traffic. Ask your guests to park their car as close to curb as possible and not line both sides of the street. Be a courteous neighbor by communicating you are having a gathering at your home and may need additional parking. Ask if they would mind guests parking in front of their homes to help eliminate the congestion on the street. To assist the Emergency Services in their endeavors and help eliminate road congestion, we ask that Residents refrain from parking in the street. Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Fireworks Enforcement Christmas and New Year’s Eve

Fireworks were banned over the 4th of July and due to the fire ban currently in force, they may be banned over the Christmas and New Year holidays. When a ban is in place, fireworks are against the law and should be reported to the proper authorities. We receive many inquiries regarding fireworks enforcement. Fireworks are against Deed Restrictions and strongly discouraged. In the hands of amateurs, fireworks are dangerous. They can lead to burns, hearing loss and other injuries and, especially during times of near-drought, they can cause

property damage. Where addresses can be identified, we will send letters to the property owners asking them to cease this type of activity and clean up the debris left behind. As required under the Texas Property Code, the property owner has to be given an opportunity to cure the violations or the opportunity to request a hearing within 30 days of the date listed on the letter. The Association has put up “No Fireworks” signs throughout the subdivision, as well as announcements on the websites in the hope that this will be a deterrent to homeowners violating this restriction. The problem is that fireworks are not against the law in Fort Bend or Harris County. Until the County laws are changed so that it is no longer legal for individuals to shoot fireworks, the association has very limited enforcement ability with regard to fireworks. If you would like to see the County laws change with regard to fireworks, we encourage you to write to your County Commissioner and inform your respective Commissioner how you feel as a tax-paying citizen of the County regarding fireworks. If your property is in Harris County, you may contact Commissioner Steve Radack’s office at pct3@hctx.net. If your property is in Fort Bend County, you may contact Commissioner Andy Meyers at meyersan@co.fort-bend.tx.us. Any other suggestions are always welcome. Thank you for speaking with your neighbors and encouraging support for our restrictions and association policies for the benefit of the Cinco Ranch community.

Mold & Mildew

Because of all the humidity in our area, many homeowners will start to notice a discoloration on the outside of their homes that can range in color from green and black to orange and gray. This is caused from mold or mildew deposits accumulating on the surface.

wash. One Resident specifically suggested a product called Jomax, which can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowe’s or Ace Hardware. Jomax mixes with bleach and water and does not require the use of a power washer. Regardless of how you choose to remove the mold from your home, please always remember to read the instructions carefully and wear protective equipment.

Help Keep Our Lights On

As daylight grows shorter, we notice the advantage of having all of the street lights working. Cinco Ranch Residents pay a maintenance fee where a large portion includes the electricity to light our streets. Each streetlight costs the Cinco Ranch Associations approximately $30 dollars a month. This fee is billed to us whether the light is working or not. If you see a light(s) burned out, please help us by getting the number on the pole. You may submit the work order to Centerpoint Energy or report it to the Association’s Office. To report the outage yourself you will either fill out the form available at: www.centerpointenergy.com/outage or you can call the information into Centerpoint Energy at 713-207-2222. The electronic form is much faster as you won’t be put on “hold.” You can also report dim lights, leaning poles, etc. on the electronic form. Copy the email to the Cinco Ranch Residential Office at: CincoRanchCustomerCare@pcmi-us.com so we can keep the list of lights reported.

Winter Irrigation Tips/ Maintenance

This is a surface problem that can occur on siding, shingles, decks, patios, roofing materials, stucco, driveways and even concrete. When treated in a timely manner, it usually does not affect the strength or other important properties of the exterior surfaces, it simply looks bad.

By: Chris Brockman, Landscape Manager Although we have not hit the middle of winter, we are well into the winter season. After a long summer like we just had, one welcome reduction that can typically be looked forward to is the amount of time the irrigation system runs. In a typical year, the Houston area receives enough rain during the winter months that the irrigation can be cut back to one day a week tops and the Association even turns the irrigation system off in December and does not turn it on until weather demands require it the spring.

Some helpful suggestions to remove these stains that have been submitted from Cinco Ranch Residents are to clean with a mildewcide or to power

If you choose to turn your irrigation system off in the winter, drain the water from the pipes to avoid freezing and cracking the pipes. This can be done by

shutting off the back flow preventor and manually opening each control valve to allow whatever water is in the pipe to drain out. If you do this to prepare for winter, remember when you turn it back on in the spring to open the back flow preventor slowly to prevent the water from filling the mainline up to quickly and forcing any of the components to break due to water hammer. General maintenance to the system should also be performed during the winter months. This time of year the grass has slowed or stopped growing, so lawn maintenance is not being performed as often so a few hours of checking all components of the system is a good idea. This includes checking for any mainline or lateral leaks, any valves that may be leaking inside the valve boxes and checking all the heads on the system to make sure none of them are broken, leaking or misaligned. All of these checkpoints can help you conserve water and irrigate your lawn as efficiently as possible. By doing this during the winter months, it will help you make sure the system is ready for use in the spring when your lawn begins growing again.

Holiday Travelers:

Traveling during the holidays can be a very trying event. Additional traffic, long lines at gas stations, airline security checks and the hustle and bustle of the season can cause for delays in travel. Take the extra time needed to prepare for these obstacles. Leave early and plan on being a little later that you would like. Check your luggage to make sure that it will travel well or go quickly through security. Make plane reservations that best suit your family. Traveling with children may take some extra planning. Plan your route to avoid major traffic areas. And please take the extra time to put your home on the vacation watch with Fort Bend or Harris County. Here are some websites to visit that can help you plan your Holiday Travel.

Winterizing Your Home Preparing Your Home for Winter

(Source: About.com) The fall Equinox is a good time of year to start thinking about preparing your home for winter, because as temperatures begin to dip, your home will require maintenance to keep it in tip-top shape through the winter.

Autumn is invariably a prelude to falling winter temperatures, regardless of where you live. It might rain or snow or, as David Letterman says, “Fall is my favorite season in Los Angeles, watching the birds change color and fall from the trees.â€? Did you know there is only one state in the United States where the temperatures have never dipped below zero? Give up? It’s Hawaii. Here are ten tips to help you prepare your home for winter: 1) Heating System Inspection • Call an HVAC professional to inspect your furnace. • Stock up on air filters and change them monthly. • Consider switching out your thermostat for a programmable thermostat. • Remove all flammable material from the area surrounding your furnace. 2) Get the Fireplace Ready • Cap or screen the top of the chimney to keep out rodents and birds. • If the chimney hasn’t been cleaned for a while, call a chimney sweep to remove soot and creosote. • Buy firewood or chop wood. Store it in a dry place away from the exterior of your home. • Inspect the fireplace damper for proper opening and closing. • Check the mortar between bricks and tuck-point, if necessary. 3) Check the Exterior, Doors and Windows • Inspect exterior for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes; seal them. • Use weather-stripping around doors to prevent cold air from entering the home and caulk windows. • Replace cracked glass in windows and, if you end up replacing the entire window, prime and paint exposed wood. 4) Inspect Roof, Gutters & Downspouts • If your weather temperature will fall below 32 degrees in the winter, adding extra insulation to the attic will prevent warm air from creeping to your roof and causing ice dams. • Check flashing to ensure water cannot enter the home. • Replace worn roof shingles or tiles. • Clean out the gutters and use a hose to spray water down the downspouts to clear away debris. • Consider installing leaf guards on the gutters or extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the home.

5) Service Weather-Specific Equipment • Drain gas from lawnmowers. • Replace worn rakes. • Clean, dry and store summer gardening equipment. • Sharpen ice choppers and buy bags of ice-melt / sand. 6) Check Foundations • Rake away all debris and edible vegetation from the foundation. • Seal up entry points to keep small animals from crawling under the house. • Tuckpoint or seal foundation cracks. Mice can slip through space as thin as a dime. • Inspect sill plates for dry rot or pest infestation. • Secure crawlspace entrances. 7) Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors • Some cities require a smoke detector in every room. • Buy extra smoke detector batteries and change them when daylight savings ends. • Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and / or water heater. • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they work. • Buy a fire extinguisher or replace an extinguisher older than 10 years.

8) Prevent Plumbing Freezes • Locate your water main in the event you need to shut it off in an emergency. • Drain all garden hoses. • Insulate exposed plumbing pipes. • Drain air conditioner pipes and if your AC has a water shut-off valve, turn it off. • If you go on vacation, leave the heat on, set to at least 55 degrees. 9) Prepare Landscaping & Outdoor Surfaces • Trim trees if branches hang too close to the house or electrical wires. • Ask a gardener when your trees should be pruned to prevent winter injury. • Plant spring flower bulbs and lift bulbs that cannot winter over such as dahlias in areas where the ground freezes. • Seal driveways, brick patios and wood decks. • Move sensitive potted plants indoors or to a sheltered area. 10) Prepare an Emergency Kit • Buy indoor candles and matches / lighter for use during a power shortage. • Find the phone numbers for your utility companies and tape them near your phone or inside the phone book. • Buy a battery back-up to protect your computer and sensitive electronic equipment. • Store extra bottled water and non-perishable food supplies (including pet food, if you have a pet), blankets and a first-aid kit in a dry and easy-toaccess location. • Prepare an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency.

PET LEASH LAWS IN THE CINCO RANCH AREA

Harris County - LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question. 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle. 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Harris County Precinct #5, Contract #87: 281-463-6666 Harris County Animal Control: 281-999-3191 Harris County Health Department, Rabies/Animal Control Section 2223 West Loop South, Houston, Texas 77027-3588 http://www.countypets.com

Ft. Bend County - LEASH LAW

Laws written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash make freeing a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals easier. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program

Cinco Ranch II

VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Fort Bend County Animal Control - 1210 Blume Road Rosenberg, TX 77471 - 281-342-1512 - AnimalServices@co.fort-bend.tx.us.

DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS!

Recently, signs have been added to the area surrounding the lake at Lake Pointe advising residents not to feed the ducks at the park and lake. The duck population at Lake Pointe is a concern and feeding the ducks is encouraging the ducks to loiter. The ducks are a part of nature and the lake is a natural area, but feeding the ducks in this manner causes a duck population growth and subsequently the mess that goes along with it. Please keep this in mind the next time you are enjoying the park and lake. Thank you for your consideration and attention. - Management

Sheriff’s Vacation Home Watch

Vacation Can Be Great! Make sure you return home and feel great.

If you are going on vacation, a business trip or just going away for the weekend, please put your house on a vacation watch list. It only takes a few minutes to inform local police that you are away from home. Take measures to secure your home and cars. Let your neighbors know that you will be away and when you plan to return. Inform neighbors and law enforcement if you plan on having maintenance services stop by while you are on vacation. It is advised that you have newspapers stopped, mail held and any advertisement left on your property picked up by someone. Keeping lawn mowed for a normal appearance to the property will look as if there is active occupancy. Taking preventative steps may deter vandals or thieves from entering your home. Log into the site or call the office to give appropriate information. Make sure to cancel the watch when you return home.

Two phone numbers suggested you save in your cell phone are the nonemergency Harris County Precinct 5 Constables and Fort Bend County Sheriff’s numbers. 911 should always be used in case of an emergency, but many times we need to contact the Sheriff’s department and need to do so quickly. Don’t hesitate to call the Sheriff’s department if something in your neighborhood seems questionable. This will give our contract deputies probable cause to investigate. This would include suspicious vehicles (vehicles exhibiting unsafe or erratic driving behavior), suspicious persons or behavior, activity at you neighbors home when you know they are on vacation and anything else that may be out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. PROTECT STORM DRAINS

Just one quart of motor oil can ruin the quality of 250,000 gallons of water. Decomposing leaves and grass clippings can cause large amounts of algae to grow which depletes the oxygen level in the water and can lead to fish kills. The blowing, sweeping or dumping of grass clippings and other pollutants down the storm drain is against Texas State Law punishable by a fine of $5,000 for each offense. PLEASE CALL 281-398-8211 TO REPORT OFFENDERS.

In terms of holidays, Thanksgiving, the day spent by many gobbling down a week’s worth of calories in one sitting, is widely considered to be the mother of all diet wreckers. The good news however, is that once the dinner does come to a close, so does the bulk of the over eating. Sure, you may indulge in a leftover helping of stuffing or two (it always tastes better the day after, doesn’t it?), but you probably won’t stuff yourself to the point of pantunbuttoning again. Christmas, on the other hand, is a stealthier diet destroyer. Though there is also a main meal, it is the lead up – all those holiday parties - that causes the most damage. The punch bowls of eggnog, the plates of Christmas cookies, it’s tough not to be tempted. Keep your family’s holiday spirit high, but your waistlines low, with these easy ways to keep your diets on track: Know Your Trigger Foods There are certain kinds of food that get even the most dedicated dieters every time. Once they start, they just can’t seem to stop, no matter how strong their willpower appears to be. Some constantly crave sugar. For others, it’s saltier foods. If you have difficulty eating a just few potato chips for example, you may want to eliminate them altogether so that you don’t set off a feeding frenzy. For kids, sugar is a given want during the holidays. Try to limit the sugars in their line of sight. If you can’t do that, let them have a few but help them pace themselves. Fill Up On Fruit Although eating lots of fruits and vegetables sounds like something to add to your list of New Year’s resolution, there’s no time like the present. This may not prevent you from popping a cheese puff or two, but you will have at least given your body some healthy fuel. For the kids, make up small plates of fruit. Try arranging it in interesting patterns. Let your child see you eating fruit rather than the sweet stuff. It’s hard to convince them if you are not practicing what you preach. Drink Sensibly You’re aware that drinking too much alcohol can give you a throbbing headache the next morning, but did you know that it can also wreak havoc on your diet? Among the biggest culprits is the holiday favorite, eggnog which contains over 350 calories per cup. You can make it more diet-friendly “light” eggnog or using milk instead of cream. Add extra ice to alcoholic drinks to water them down. And be sure to also drink several glasses of water to detoxify your system. Obviously, make sure the kids get the virgin eggnog and be wary of eggnog made with raw eggs. Practice Mindful Eating Stay aware of what, when and why you are eating. It’s easy to lose track of how many cups of eggnog or cookies you are consuming at a holiday

gathering. Before you reach for another goodie on the buffet table, ask yourself, “Am I hungry or am I eating simply because the food is in front of me?” Slow down the process by remembering to chew your food thoroughly before taking another bite and to savor the taste. Make sure your children are kept busy. They graze when they are bored just like we do. And grown up parties can be pretty boring for kids. Bring plenty of games, maybe even save a special one that you can break out just for the party. If you are throwing the party and it’s kid friendly, make sure you have a few crafts and fun projects for your littlest guests. Get Back On Track If you’ve spent the day eating more of Aunt Sally’s fruitcake then you care to admit, enjoy the indulgence, then get back to eating healthy as quickly as possible. Try not to throw up your hands in defeat if you’ve overdone it. Continue to focus on eating as healthfully as possible, no matter the amount of calorie-fests. Remember, it’s important to set examples for your kids during these holidays. They take their cues from you. If you train them early on how to avoid the holiday weight gain it will take them through many more Christmas seasons. By Jennier Saltiel. www.health.kaboose.com/get-backon-track

Top Christmas movies Elf Will Ferrell brings the laughs in this 2003 movie about a boy who was raised by elves. When Buddy the Elf heads off to New York to find his real dad, he has a bit of a hard time fitting in with his elf costume and love of all things maple syrup. But he soon manages to win over his new family, even his emotionally-stunted dad, and manages to bring Christmas spirit to even the most jaded New Yorkers. The Nightmare Before Christmas When Jack Skellington grows tired of Halloween Town, he wanders into the forest and accidentally opens a portal to a magical place called Christmas Town. Can he convince his fellow townsmen that this new town is a magical place or will he be forced to watch as Christmas Town is taken over and it’s magical spirit robbed? National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation In this laugh-out-loud movie form 1989, Clark Griswold (played by Chevy Chase) is gung-ho about having a good old-fashioned family Christmas, even when his dead-beat brother shows up and parks his RV in the driveway and the cat gets electrocuted by the Christmas tree. After all, it’s not Christmas without a little drama, right? Home Alone In 1990, Macauley Culkin starred in his breakout role as an 8-year-old who gets left behind when his family takes off for vacation. While he’s home alone, he’s forced to deal with two burglars who have cased the neighborhood to steal Christmas gifts. Using smarts, wit and a few crafty traps, he manages to ward off the burglars and reunite with his family just in time for the holiday. Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer This classic made-for-TV Christmas movie premiered in 1964 and it’s been delighting generations of kids ever since. It tells the story of Rudolph, a reindeer with a nose that lights up. He’s looking for a place where he belongs. Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town This 1970 TV movie is about Kris Kringle — the man who becomes Santa Claus — and how he brings toys to children in a town that has outlawed them. But what really makes this movie a Christmas classic is the fearsome Winter Warlock’s transformation into a compassionate wizard with the wonderful song “Put One Foot In Front of the Other.” A Christmas Carol Whether you like the 1984 version starring George C. Scott or the 1976, 1977, 1999, or 2000 version — a remake seems to come out every year — this is a holiday classic. Based on a story by Charles Dickens about an old

miser named Scrooge who learns compassion when three ghosts visit him on Christmas Eve, this makes a great holiday movie because it’s thrilling and it has a nice message. White Christmas Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye are charming in this old-time classic from 1954. Both actors play World War II vets who fall in love with two sisters and go on to become an entertainment duo who make it big as producers of a hit Broadway show. When they find out an old friend is on the verge of bankruptcy, they use their star power to summon help on Christmas Eve and give their friend perhaps the best Christmas present of all. How the Grinch Stole Christmas The Grinch (a non-human Scrooge) tries to ruin Christmas for the Whos in Whoville by stealing their presents, trees and holiday treats. Of course, the Grinch has a change of heart and finds love and friendship with the Whos. A Charlie Brown Christmas In this half-hour Christmas special, Charlie Brown becomes the director of the school holiday pageant and goes out with Linus to buy an aluminum tree for the show. Instead, they bring back a forlorn real tree. Our hapless hero finds himself dismayed by the rampant commercialization of the holidays and searches for the true meaning of Christmas.

It’s a Wonderful Life What holiday movie list would be complete without this 1946 Frank Capra classic, starring James Stewart? A man about to commit suicide during the holidays because he’s financially ruined is stopped by an angel who shows him what life would be like if he’d never existed. It’s a charming movie — part romance, part pathos and a celebration of life.

Miracle on 34th Street In this sweet 1947 movie, a Macy’s executive tries to find a new store Santa. She hires an old man named Kris Kringle who claims to be the one-and-only Santa Claus. Of course, such claims can get you into trouble and Kris ends up being hospitalized for some kind of delusional disorder. Hope comes in the form of a young man who wants to help Kris prove that he is really and truly Santa. The Year Without a Santa Claus Another stop-motion classic from the ‘70s, in which Santa finds himself feeling too discouraged to make his Christmas rounds. He’s sick and he doesn’t think that kids believe in him anymore. Two elves embark on a quest to find children who still believe in Santa. The plot is pretty flimsy, but children won’t mind — they’ll be too taken with the catchy musical numbers.

A Christmas Story This 1983 comedy celebrates the sort of Christmas a young boy may have had in the 1940s. Young Ralphie Parker wants only one thing: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200 Shot Range Model Air Rifle. His parents don’t want him to shoot his eye out and refuse to get it. Wacky hijinks ensue as Ralphie develops some very creative ploys to convince his mother and father that this is the only thing they should give him.

HOW TO HOST A COOKIE EXCHANGE ON A BUDGET

1. Send Evites or emails to guests in order to save money on the cost of invitations and postage. If you ask each guest to bring 6-dozen cookies and there are ten people at the exchange that means you’ll have 720 cookies. Assuming each person takes home 5-dozen cookies, you will still have 120 leftover for tasting. It is important to let the guests know the exact amount of cookies to bring.

2. Invite moms only, if possible. This way, you’re not distracted by having to follow toddlers around and you don’t feel compelled to serve snacks for kids of varying ages.

3. Nearly all types of cookies work well for a cookie exchange, though it’s best to avoid any that are extremely delicate as they can get crushed by the sturdier kinds. It’s also a good idea to steer clear of cookies that need to be refrigerated, such as lemon bars. 4. You want to know the ingredients that raise the price of certain cookie recipes? Nuts, chocolate, and liqueur – just to name a few. Mexican wedding cakes are delicious, for example, but the pecans alone can cost $6 for half a pound. If you really want to make a pricey cookie like mini pecan pie tarts, go ahead, but just shape or cut them smaller. 5. If you don’t have the time or the inclination to roll and cut out dough, simply dress up old favorites like chocolate chip drop cookies by sprinkling them with red or green colored sugar. A bottle of decorating sugar costs under $3 and will last you. 7. Another budget-priced cookie is the bar cookie. Make a batch of brownies from a mix and add a teaspoon of mint extract. Make an easy icing (confectioners’ sugar, a tablespoon of butter and milk) and tint it green using food coloring, with a dash of mint extract added for flavor.. You can add red sprinkles or chocolate jimmies, just to add that little extra something. 8. Flavor extracts are inexpensive, but can add a lot of flavor. Make thumbprint cookies, but add a teaspoon of rum extract to the dough and half a teaspoon of rum extract to the icing. Or, add mint extract to your basic sugar cookie dough, roll out into candy cane shapes and bake. After you frost them, top with candy canes that you have crushed in the food processor or blender.

11. If you’re really pressed for time, to the point where time is money, don’t be afraid to buy the refrigerated rolls of cookie dough and infuse them with your own special touches. Top chocolate chip cookies with some unwrapped, melted caramels, mini marshmallows and chocolate-coated chocolate candies, then bake another minute or until the marshmallows are golden – no one is likely to have also made this creative and delicious treat. 12. Keep the refreshments light. For an afternoon cookie exchange you can serve tea, coffee (add a cinnamon stick to the coffee before you brew it) and maybe hot cider (buy the store brand by the gallon and warm it on the stove or in a slow cooker, with a couple of cinnamon sticks.) Have a bowl of seasonal fruit (grapes and clementines provide color) and maybe a wedge or two of a not so costly cheese for those that need a break from the sweets. 13. Be sure to tell each guest to bring along copies of their recipe and put them right on the table next to their variety of cookie. 14. Have everyone in your exchange bring just one or two extra dozen cookies and you can make up plates of cookies for homebound elderly or residents at homeless shelters. Encourage everyone to bring some canned food and you can donate these to a local soup kitchen, as well. After the party has cleared and you present your family with a huge tray of holiday treats, they will be thrilled. You’re giving them cookies that look and taste store bought, but were actually made with a secret ingredient: love. And that’s really what this holiday season is all about. Enjoy! By Rosemary Black. www.recipes.kaboose.com/cookie-exchange-2

9. Try putting a holiday spin on economical old favorites like Rice Krispies treats. When you stir the cereal into the melted butter-and-marshmallow mixture, add green, red, or a combination of both colored sprinkles to the mixture. Spread it into a greased pan and cut into diamond shapes when cool. You can also flatten these out and use a cookie cutter to cut into trees, bells or ornaments. 10. When it comes to inexpensive food coloring, a little goes a long way. Color basic snickerdoodle or sugar cookie dough green, roll them out into little balls and place on a baking sheet. For beautiful holiday thumbprint cookies, make a tiny indentation in each cookie before baking and fill it with raspberry or strawberry jam.

Solana “Vegas Night” Saluted Second Anniversary

Benefited National PARKINSON’S Foundation

The Solana at Cinco Ranch, the senior living community is still buzzing about its successful first anniversary party: Vegas Night. To recognize our second year in Cinco Ranch, we invited friends, family and the community to roll the dice with us at eleven gaming tables. We raised over $700 for the National Parkinson’s Foundation. Dr. Ron Tintner Neurologist, Methodist Neurological Institute was on hand to speak about how the proceeds would benefit the organization. The Solana is being guided through the process to develop a support group. Chef Bradley Montgomery and his kitchen team prepared a dinner buffet and food stations and they served dinner in The Sienna Theater. The Main Casino was staged in the Signature Dining Room. Cane Island Wine Bar and The Crescent Café were host to Blackjack, Craps, Roulettes, Wheel of Fortune and specialty game tables and slots. Several prizes were awarded to the evening winners; all prizes were donated by community organizations to help with this production to benefit the National Parkinson’s Foundation. For more information about The Solana, see www.thesolana.com or call 281-395-9600.

Salt Dough Snowman Ornament By: Amanda Formaro Difficulty: Very Easy Age: 5 and up

Creating salt dough is a fun activity for kids and it’s a great material to use to create homemade ornaments, so this is like two crafts in one! For this ornament, kids can shape the dough into a simple snowman that would be a great gift to give a friend for the holidays. What you’ll need: 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon water Spoon Toothpick Paintbrush Ribbon Acrylic sealer spray

2 tablespoons flour Bowl Cookie sheet Paint: white, orange and black

How to make it: Place flour, salt and water in a bowl and mix with the spoon. Once the dough is combined, pick it up in your hand and knead it with your fingers until smooth. Remove a small piece of dough for making the nose and roll the larger piece of dough between your palms to form a ball. Press the ball down onto the cookie sheet with the palm of your hand, flattening it out. Roll the small piece of dough with your fingers into a carrot shape. Press firmly but gently onto the round flattened dough. Insert toothpick toward the top of the head, but not too close to the edge. Move the toothpick in a circular motion to enlarge the hole so that it is big enough to run a piece of ribbon through. Bake ornament at 250 degrees for 2 hours. Remove from oven and let cool on a rack. When completely cool, paint the round section white and the nose orange. Use the handle end of a paintbrush dipped in black paint to dot on the snowman’s eyes and mouth. Let dry. An adult should spray the ornament with a couple of coats of sealer. When dry, tie a ribbon hanger through the hole in the top. Tips: If you want to create a perfect circle, place dough inside a round biscuit or cookie cutter and spread with your fingers. Salt dough will break if dropped, so be sure to handle the ornament with care. The oven step can be skipped if you allow the ornament to dry overnight.

One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child. To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

Community Education

Community Education offers evening and on-line classes to adults for fun, enrichment and learning. Some of the classes offered are Foreign Languages, Arts and Crafts, Finance, Computer, Sewing, Dance and Music. For information on these and many other classes and to view the fall schedule, go to www.katyisd.org/com_edu or call 281-396-6365.

participating in a thrilling competition. The boys’ Green Giants and the girls’ Orange Crush teams were victorious. But the day was really about celebrating sport, teamwork and having a blast. The fabulous half time performance by 5th grade teachers and the Beckendorff Jr. High cheerleaders added to the fun. As did the Griffin Grizzly bear mascot acting as the assistant referee. Griffin is one of only two Katy elementary schools to host a Super Bowl. It’s a major undertaking and Griffin would like to thank Richmond Bone and Joint, Ozarka and PTA volunteers.

Record Sales at Griffin Elementary Book Fair

Students and their families spent a record $35,273 at the Scholastic Book Fair held in the Library. Griffin’s share of the sales was $8,800. This winwin fundraiser means students have great books to read and school has additional funding. Librarian Mitzie Cross plans to spend the extra cash on: organizing three authors to meet students at school; more books for the Library; accelerated reader tests and prizes; and new technology equipment. Whole families had the opportunity to shop together in Griffin’s library, as the school was celebrating Grandparents week.

PACK 542 HONORS THOMAS PARK WITH A TREE FOR ARBOR DAY

Thomas Park in Old Katy will be a little more colorful this fall thanks to efforts of the Cub Scouts of Pack 542. The Scouts spent a sunny Sunday afternoon planting a tree in honor of Arbor Day. Not only will the tree planting help beautify Thomas Park, but it helped the Scouts develop a sense of community involvement and giving back through service to the community. The kids put some effort into life and they will see the benefits down the road, especially when they return to visit the Park after many years.

The Christmas Revels: Musical Theater in Celebration of the Winter Solstice

The darkest time of the year casts a powerful spell over nearly every culture in the northern hemisphere, and has given birth to countless ways of celebrating the winter solstice. Many of the present-day holiday rituals in our country originate in the Nordic/ German traditions and come flavored with the spices of Europe. We invite you to take a little journey to early nineteenth-century Bavaria and the surrounding regions to explore the roots of modern Christmas. As always, this interactive family friendly show will include superb music, lovely costumes, and traditional dances. Our adult and children’s choruses will add to the warmth, as will performances by accomplished guest artists, including an Alphorn duet and yodlers, who are genuine interpreters of Bavarian culture.

30 YEARS EXPERIENCE

Local Mentors Needed to Mentor One Child and change two lives!

CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive mentoring relationships. The goal is crime prevention! Our mentors must be 21 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 1 hour a week. There are many sites, areas and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. The Harris County Leadership Academy and Krause Center are in Katy and close to home. WE desperately need loving and caring Katy resident mentors for the 150 + boys that do not have have anyone visiting them! One CROSSROADS mentor says, “Volunteering through CROSSROADS has been a truly rewarding experience. I’ve mentored some really good kids who made some really bad choices and it’s been gratifying to get to know them, earn their trust and watch them grow.” Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy child, many times you are their only visitors. Contact Susan Burden (Katy Resident) at 713-295-2784, sbcrossroads@gmail.com or visit us at www. CROSSROADS-volunteers.org.

SIRE, Houston’s Therapeutic Equestrian Centers

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics.
