NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVE COMMITTEE (NRC) REPRESENTATIVES NEEDED

The following sections of Cinco Ranch are still in need of representation: Town Center I (includes Fountainview I, Fountainview II, University Place, Cottage Grove and Meadow Grove.)

Of course, dogs also bark to alert their owners of trouble such as an intruder entering the property or perhaps fire. Remember, a dog’s idea of an intruder may differ from the owner’s idea of an intruder.

South Park III (includes Meadow Glen and Summer Point.) Cinco Ranch Seven Meadows I (includes Fieldstone and Somer Glen) Please contact the office at 281-599-0408 or email jblackman@stes for further details on the NRC and if you are interested in serving. Thank you!

WHY IS THAT DOG BARKING?

Here are some possible reasons from the Cinco Ranch Veterinary Hospital. Is your Neighbor’s dog barking a lot? Perhaps the solution is communication with your neighbor. The following points need to be considered. • The dog’s owner may not realize that the barking is causing an annoyance to others. • The dog may only bark excessively when the owner is not at home. • The owner may not hear the barking from various areas within the house. • The owner may be a very sound sleeper and not be awakened when the dog barks. Reasons why dogs bark: • Lack of exercise • Inadequate yard space • Boredom • Not enough human companionship

6

• Inadequate shelter from weather conditions • Hungry or thirsty • Medical condition • Provocation • Disturbances • Change to family structure • Change of territory • Anxiety

Solutions: Consider the possibilities above. Have the pet checked out for medical conditions and discuss behavior modification with your veterinarian. This information was submitted to help Cinco Ranch Residents By Cinco Ranch Veterinary Hospital

PET LEASH LAWS IN THE CINCO RANCH AREA

HARRIS COUNTY - LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question.

DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS!

Recently, signs have been added to the area surrounding the lake at Lake Pointe advising residents not to feed the ducks at the park and lake. The duck population at Lake Pointe is a concern and feeding the ducks is encouraging the ducks to loiter. The ducks are a part of nature and the lake is a natural area, but feeding the ducks in this manner causes a duck population growth and subsequently the mess that goes along with it. Please keep this in mind the next time you are enjoying the park and lake. Thank you for your consideration and attention. - Management

SHERIFF’S VACATION HOME WATCH

Vacation Can Be Great! Make sure you return home and feel great.

If you are going on vacation, a business trip or just going away for the weekend, please put your house on a vacation watch list. It only takes a few minutes to inform local police that you are away from home. Take measures to secure your home and cars. Let your neighbors know that you will be away and when you plan to return. Inform neighbors and law enforcement if you plan on having maintenance services stop by while you are on vacation. It is advised that you have newspapers stopped, mail held and any advertisement left on your property picked up by someone. Keeping lawn mowed for a normal appearance to the property will look as if there is active occupancy. Taking preventative steps may deter vandals or thieves from entering your home.

your neighborhood seems questionable. This will give our contract deputies probable cause to investigate. This would include suspicious vehicles (vehicles exhibiting unsafe or erratic driving behavior), suspicious persons or behavior, activity at you neighbors home when you know they are on vacation and anything else that may be out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. don’t take a chance on you or your family’s safety. PROTECT STORM DRAINS

Just one quart of motor oil can ruin the quality of 250,000 gallons of water. Decomposing leaves and grass clippings can cause large amounts of algae to grow which depletes the oxygen level in the water and can lead to fish kills. The blowing, sweeping or dumping of grass clippings and other pollutants down the storm drain is against Texas State Law punishable by a fine of $5,000 for each offense.

Golf Tournaments TALAN HOLMES CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC

Talan Holmes Charity Golf Classic is a Golf Tournament that has one main goal. We are all about providing funds to a group of people who are born with Tebial Hemimelia (TH from here on). TH is a rare malformation, 1:1,000,000 or lack of formation of the Tibia which is the weight bearing bone in the bottom of the leg. This tournament started out to pay the medical expenses of Talan Holmes, the tournament chairman’s son. Talan has undergone his first surgery and is now working with his first prosthesis trying to learn to walk. Many families, like the Holmes family, are unaware of TH and until delivery don’t know that their child has TH. Our goal, while still paying the medical expenses of Talan, is to help other families that may not have the ability to raise their own funds or simply can’t raise enough to get their child the prosthesis that he or she needs. The Golf Tournament is on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the River Ridge Gold Club, 3133 Brazos Oak Lane, Sealy, TX 77474. Registration begins - 6:30 AM, Breakfast - 7:00 AM and Event Start Time - 9:00 AM For more information about the tournament, sign up to be a sponsor and to register, visit www.birdeasepro.com/talan2012. THE KATY/WEST HOUSTON JAZZ FESTIVAL 2012

Like Music? “You’ll Love Katy!” The Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is scheduled for April 27 and 28, 2012. You will not want to miss this exciting weekend of music and art coming to Katy, Texas! The purpose of the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is to increase exposure of jazz, to extend jazz education for developing musicians and to provide entertainment of the jazz music medium in the Katy and West Houston areas. The Festival’s activities are non-competitive and dedicated to the development and preservation of this truly American art form. Throughout the day an exhibit of outstanding visual artwork, by area and national artists, known as ARTkaty is on display and provides the opportunity for attendees to view, enjoy, and purchase fine artwork of the highest quality. More information about the featured jazz artists, featured guitar artists, and visual artists can be found on the website: www.WestHoustonJazz.com. Performance and participation in the Katy Guitar Fest is encouraged for all guitarists of all ages and all genres of music. Registration forms for each of these components are available on the website: www.WestHoustonJazz.com. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF SECOND CHANCES

CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive mentoring relationships. The goal is crime prevention! Our mentors must be 21 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 1 hour a week. There are many sites, areas and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. We desperately need loving and caring mentors for boys and girls that do not have anyone visiting them! Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy child, many times you are their only visitors. Contact Jan Sadler Gibbs at jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779.

PREGNANCY HELP CENTER SEEKS NEW VOLUNTEERS

Invest your time by volunteering with Pregnancy Help Center of West Houston educating and supporting men and women in making healthy choices for life in sexual integrity, unplanned pregnancy and post-abortion loss. SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator.
