For Residents of Bradford Colony, Charlestown Colony, Concord Colony, Georgetown Colony One, Georgetown Colony Two, Jamestown Colony, Langham Creek Colony, and Yorktown Colony

Bradford Colony 1 & 2 (BC1&2)

The residents of Bradford Colony 1 & 2 have recently lost a very valuable board member and resident, Bob Willoughby. He passed away in October and he will be greatly missed. We deeply appreciate all of Bob’s contributions to the neighborhood and all the improvements he implemented during the last several years. Bob always had the neighborhood’s best interests in mind and worked incessantly and enthusiastically on making the area more enjoyable and safe to live in. We sincerely extend our gratitude to his services.

(BC 1&2) Annual Homeowners’ Meeting: Bradford Colony 1&2 had held the annual meeting on Wednesday, 11/2/2011. The 2012 budget was approved by the board and the 2012 assessment dues will remain the same at $295. We really appreciate all homeowners’ efforts to pay the dues so we can continue to maintain a nice and safe area for all our neighbors. The board and all attendees to the annual meeting had also passed and approved a proposal to name our park Bob Willoughby Park in recognition to his efforts which made the park a park instead of just an open area. More detail will be announced in coming months.

(BC 1&2) Yard of the month:

There will not be Yard of the Month award until December when three prizes will be given to three best Christmas decorations in our neighborhood. Thanks to all homeowners who were able to keep up nice green lawns during this year, which greatly enhanced the appearance of our area and look forward to seeing some wonderful Christmas decorations in December.

2011 is drawing to a close and the holidays are here. The Board would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season. As in past years, the Board will be voting on the best Christmas decorations in the neighborhood and award signs will be posted in the yards of the winners. This voting will take place the Sunday before Christmas. It is expected that the vote will be close based on past year’s experiences.

(BCS3) BE CAREFUL AND WATCHFUL DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON With the upcoming Holiday Season, please be aware of what is happening around our neighborhood with respect to any strange activities or individuals you see in our area. In past years, we have experienced a few burglaries and some random vandalism of Christmas decorations during the Holiday Season. We ask that everyone be alert as to what they see in and around the neighborhood. Let’s continue watching out for each other. Talk to your neighbors and let them know if you are heading out of town so that they can keep an eye on your home. Try to take note of the description of any suspicious individuals or take down the license numbers of suspicious vehicles that you may see in our neighborhood. And always remember to lock up your vehicles and keep your garage door closed if you are not in the front of your house. If you feel there is a need to do so, call the Harris County Sheriff Department (713-221-6000) and report any suspicious or illegal activity. By being aware and working together, we can hopefully make this Holiday Season a safer time in our neighborhood.

(BCS3) 2012 BCS3 ASSESSMENT Every property owner in the neighborhood has received their 2012 Assessment. As was outlined in the letter that accompanied the invoice, the Board did their best minimize the 2012 Budget and subsequently keep the assessment as low as possible. All residents are encouraged to take care of this payment by the January 31, 2012 deadline so as to avoid penalties and late fees.

The Board understands that this annual bill can be overlooked during the end of the year / holiday season period. All residents are encouraged to incorporate the payment of this bill into their upcoming budgets so as to not create a delinquency situation that will only add costs (e.g. interest, late fees, etc.) to the total. Also remember that it is possible to set up a payment plan to handle the 2012 Assessment. If you are interested in this option, please contact our management company (ACMP) at 281-855-9867 and talk to our agent (Theodora Daly) about setting up such a plan.

(BCS3) STREET LIGHT OUTAGES To report a street light outage or request a repair to a street light, you will need to get the six digit number of the street light (it is normally located on the side of the pole facing the street) You will also need the approximate address of the street light (e.g. house near the pole). Then click on this link (www.centerpointenergy.com/outage) to fill out the short report form to get the light fixed.

(BCS3) WEBSITE REMINDER The website for our neighborhood is now www.bcs3.org. This is a totally new and revamped website from the original one that was developed back in 2003-2004. Please take the time to check into this new website - and feel free to contact any Board member with suggestions and comments pertaining to this site.

(BCS3) CONTACT THE BOARD As is the case with everything in our small neighborhood, every resident should feel free to contact any Board member as to any issue or question that you have about BCS3. Contact information for all the Board members is located on the inside back cover of this publication.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through DECEMBER. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Charlestown Colony (ChC) Holiday Decorations Contest It is time to be festive and decorate! Our Holiday Decoration judging will take place sometime between December 16th and 20th, so be sure to have your decorations up and on! The decorations are a real treat; something special to mark the season. One year is finishing and another about to begin. Even though the days are shorter and it gets dark earlier, our neighborhood bright is during this time of year! If you would like to be part of the decision making process, contact a Board member! Do you enjoy the decorations at the front? Thank a board member for putting them up! Putting these up ourselves saves the neighborhood the cost of paying a service. Anytime you can do-it-yourself, you can save. Thanks to our board members! We appreciate the money they save us!

(ChC) Association Assessments Speaking of costs, annual assessments should have been received. There was no increase in the assessment this year. Please make every effort to pay your assessments on time or set up payment plans with SCS Management. Our service manager at SCS Management Company is DebbieKay. She is our primary liaison for all general information and questions about the Association, as well as services funded by the assessment. Her direct line is 281-5007106. You can call her directly and not get shuffled around in the management company phone system. Charlestown Colony Community Improvement Association (CCCIA - us) uses the funds to keep the lights on, keep the common areas mowed and free of hazards and maintain the park areas. Often repairs are done by neighbors giving of their own time and tools. We all work together to keep the expenses down. An attractive neighborhood says there are people here who look out for each other. This helps maintain our home values and is a deterrent to crime. Do your part. Pay your assessment. Keep your home and yard in good condition. Pick up trash when you are out walking or at the park.

(ChC) Holiday Safety Speaking of crime - during the holidays many people are away from their homes for days or sometimes just hours visiting family and friends. Don’t make your home an attractive target for thieves. Don’t leave valuables in your car - even if they can’t be seen. If you are away, even for an afternoon, try to set lights on timers. If you are away for a longer period of time, have a trusted neighbor or friend keep an eye your home. Your home is your castle, and unfortunately, there are people looking to raid your castle. In October’s Colonies Newsletter, Georgetown Colony had a list of break-ins. They have installed cameras at their entrance to deter criminal activity. Churches are encouraging parishioners not to leave valuables in their car as thieves are targeting cars in the parking lot. One neighbor told of her car broken into while at the cemetery. Your best defense is a good offense. Don’t leave anything of value where someone can take it. Got a new computer or big screen TV for the holidays? Take the box to a recycle bin (Horne Elementary and Truitt Middle School - both have them) rather than putting it out for the trash. Putting it out for the trash advertises that you have something worth steeling. Think about using extra long screws in the hinges and catch-plates for your doors. These make the doors much more difficult to kick-in and are a fairly simple, do-it-yourself, improvement. If you are expecting packages, be sure to track shipping and delivery. Packages left on doorsteps are easy targets for theft. If anyone notices suspicious activity, do not hesitate to contact the Sheriff, 713-221-6000.

(ChC) Neighborhood Issues Adults have reported seeing young people riding ATVs and/or gocarts around the park area. Riding these types of vehicles in the park damages the grounds. Repairs to the park grounds and the structures are paid for with money collected through neighborhood dues. However, if a person can be identified and proven responsible for the damage (cell phone cameras are a great asset here), this person can be held liable for the damages. If the person responsible is a minor, parents of that person would be responsible for the cost of repairs. Do your part. Enjoy using the park equipment and grounds but leave them in good or better condition than you found them. Respect the common areas as you would want others to respect your property. Please put trash in its proper place. When at the playground, please use the trash cans there. When putting your recycle trash out, please make sure items that might become airborne are at the bottom of the bin. Newspapers tend to fly everywhere on windy Mondays. Thanks to all the dog walkers who carry their poop scoop bags! We all appreciate a clean neighborhood. It seems there are several dog walkers who don’t clean up after their pets. For right now, all we can do is ask that you please be responsible and clean up after your pet. There is talk of taking photographs.

(ChC) Cats, Cats and more Cats There is a problem with stray cats in the area. On more than one occasion, multiple cats have been seen in people’s trash looking for food. Several neighbors have contacted Harris County Animal Control about trapping the cats. Per Harris County Animal Control Regulations (HCACR), section 4.A, “all dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, or to allow any dog or cat to

become a stray.” www.hcphes.org/vph/Animal_Laws/AnimalRegulations/index. The neighbors plan to trap stray cats. If you have a pet cat that you allow to roam the neighborhood without a collar, your cat may be caught and turned into Harris County Animal Control. Please note the HCACR use the word “custodian” to reference the person responsible for the animal. Feeding stray animals could be construed as a custodian, therefore implying ownership of the animal. Feeding stray cats, leaving bowls of food out for the cats, could be considered custodianship of the animal. Per section 4.B of the regulations, “The custodian of every dog or cat is responsible for any behavior of a dog or cat under the provisions of these Regulations.” This includes animal bites and damage to property. Please do not feed stray animals of any kind. Should your cat (licensed or unlicensed) disappear in the next few months, please review section 4.K and 4.L of the HCACR. Also - please don’t feed the squirrels. Squirrels are part of the rodent family. They can get into attics where they chew on wires creating electrical problems as well as a fire hazard. They get into walls where they get confused and die a slow death from dehydration and starvation. That is not a smell you want to come home to, let alone cut holes in your walls to find and remove the animal.

(ChC) Water, Water The rainfall this year has been minimal at best. As of this writing, Houston is 27 inches below the normal rainfall totals. This translates to receiving only 36.5% of the rain we would have normally received at this time of year. The drought is expected to continue into 2012. Our Municipal Utility District has posted signs and sent letters asking homeowners to conserve water. Houston is used to lush green areas because we receive so much rain. We really need to think about ways to reduce our water usage. If the drought continues for another year, we may face more serious water shortages. Be smart about your water use. Install low-flow faucet values; don’t let water run while doing dishes, washing hands or brushing teeth. Give lawns

and plants the water they need without excess. Remember to deep water trees. Fix any leaks you may have. Water saved now will help the water we have last longer. Remember our watering days are Tuesday and Saturday for odd numbered addresses; Wednesday and Sunday for even numbered addresses. (ChC) Recycling While we have curbside pick-up for regular household recycling, Christmas trees left at the curb just take up space in landfills. Bear Creek Park has recycled Christmas trees into mulch for many years. They plan to have their recycling program again this year. The recycling program starts the day after Christmas. Last year the program ended January 1st. Check their website, http://www.pct3.hctx.net, for the end date this year. And check out the website in general. What a great source of information for our area!

(ChC) Lastly… The board wishes everyone a peaceful holiday season and a wonderful New Year!

Jamestown Colony News (JC) VISIT US ON THE WEB Questions about the neighborhood? You can probably find the answer on the Jamestown Colony website, www.jamestowncolony.com.

(JC) Jamestown also has a Facebook page! Go to the Search function and type in “Jamestown Colony.” Click JOIN and you’ll be alerted when we post (very infrequent) notices about the neighborhood, including crime alerts for the neighborhood.

(JC) HOLIDAYS & HOLIDAY DECORATIONS

The holiday season is upon us. Keep yourself and your family safe and warm. Remember that gifts don’t show love; you yourself do. Holiday decorations will be judged the 3rd weekend in December. Winners awarded in each section, will receive home improvement gift cards.

(JC) CURB SURVEY

A few folks have written in, but we’re still trying to assemble a list of broken curbs to send to the County, which it is obligated to fix. Please send the locations of cracked, displaced, or broken curbing to Donna Hackemack Bryant at schpinna@yahoo.com. Put JAMESTOWN in the subject line. However, please note that driveways (and the lips on either side of your driveways) are YOUR responsibility, as are any repairs associated with drains or holes cut through the curb.

(JC) SPRING COMMUNITY EVENTS

The 5th Annual Jamestown Community Garage Sale is tentatively being planned for March 17, 2012, the Saturday at the end of the week of Cy-Fair ISD’s Spring Break. Start cleaning out your closets and garages. The usual signs and newspaper ads will be placed well in advance to ensure a big turnout by potential buyers. The tentative date for the 2012 Easter Egg Hunt in the Section 1 park is March 31st. The final date will be announced early next year.

(JC) HOA ASSESSMENTS DUE SOON

Remember that your homeowner assessment is due January 1st and begins to accrue late fees and penalties after January 31st. You can either send a check to ACMP based on the statement that will be sent to you this month or you can pay online at www. jamestowncolony.com (if you pay online, you are responsible for any service fees for your online payment). If you can’t pay the entire assessment at one time, contact ACMP at 281-855-9867 to arrange a payment plan. As long as you make such arrangements and stick to the payment plan, you won’t be assessed penalties and late fees. Remember that your assessment will be larger this year and next till we get the fence paid off. And if you want to start paying off your assessment this year, to get a jump on 2012, contact ACMP to make the necessary arrangements.

(JC) GREEN TIPS

For the holidays, give the gift of yourself and your labor. Costs less and means more. If you buy gifts, look for items with less packaging and ones that will have a light impact on the environment. 1. Do you hate all the paper you have to collect and throw in the trash after you open gifts during the holidays? Here’s a green alternative: make re-useable cloth gift sacks in all different sizes and using festive fabrics. You don’t even have to sew to make gift sacks; nowadays, you can buy cloth glue to do the job. A set of gift sacks for the holidays and for birthdays/anniversaries would also make a great gift for many people on your shopping list. Look for holiday fabric remnants at the end of the year to make it a thrifty gift, as well as a green one.

The holidays are the best time to recycle. DON’T throw away a pile of stuff the day after December 25th when it can find a use elsewhere and keep our landfills a little emptier (and save you tax money). 2. Excess paper and cardboard gift wrapping can be recycled at the local schools in the yellow & green bins. 3. Plastic packaging can be recycled using your curbside bins (If you don’t have a bin, call Waste Management at 713-686-6666, and follow the voice prompt till you get to Customer Service. You will have to give them the subdivision name [Jamestown Colony] and the Municipal Utility District [MUD] number [#102]; WM will deliver a new bin to your home). 4. Clothing, shoes, and household items can always be recycled through charitable organizations, church thrift shops, Salvation Army, Purple Heart, etc. Aside from helping your neighbor during the holiday period, you can also get a tax write-off for such contributions. 5. Small consumer electronics can be recycled at the local Goodwill office on Hwy. 6, just south of West Little York, or you can find electronics recyclers by googling them online. 6. Large consumer electronics like televisions, desktop computers, etc., can be recycled at the City of Houston Westpark Consumer Recycling Center or Environmental Service Centers. For more information, go to www.houstontx.gov/solidwaste/recycling.html#scrap.

(JC) EASY WAY TO REPORT STREET LIGHT OUTAGES Instead of waiting for the CenterPoint Energy Business Office to open, report the burned out street lights while you’re thinking of it. Go to www.centerpointenergy.com/services/electricity/residential/ reportastreetlightoutage and fill in the information. Remember, the HOA pays for these lights whether they’re burning or not, so you might as well have them burning.

Yorktown Colony (YTC) CHRISTMAS LIGHTS DECORATING JUDGING Don’t forget to decorate by December 19th, when the judging will take place for the Christmas Lights decorations for your yard and home. Please have your lights turned on that night, so we can see them to judge. There will be 3 prizes of $50 per household for a gift certificate from Houston Garden Centers. I will contact who won personally in January to let you know who won but it won’t be in the newsletter until February 2011.

"Doing business from the same location since 1978"

This was the annual VIPS Fall Conference held by the CFISD VIPS Executive Board at the Berry Center in Cypress. The schedule was full. It consisted of everything from learning how to turn a popsicle stick into a fun treat for a teacher or volunteer to tips on helping our students handle stress. The attendees could choose from a variety of 50 minute sessions that covered topics such as: Internet Safety; Reaching Out to Diverse Volunteers; Guidelines and Best Practices for Fundraising; and even Taking Care of Your Personal Health While Maintaining a Busy Lifestyle. Something was most impressive about this conference to one volunteer. This audience of 200 plus was comprised of men and women, volunteers and school staff - not limited to Cy-Fair ISD. There were 4 other area districts represented at this conference: Alief ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Houston ISD and Spring ISD. The current budget environment has left our school districts vying to be first in line for every resource of financial and physical support they can find. But for one day in October, the district boundary lines came down. There was no competition. There was no hidden agenda. Despite the traffic and everyday challenges, educators and volunteers from schools all over our county came together for a common purpose: improving their volunteer program thereby affecting the students in a positive way. This was simply an opportunity to attend an event that focused on several different areas of how to build on their volunteer resources in order to enhance the children’s education. While that volunteer sat looking out over the diverse crowd; she couldn’t help but see a universal theme, “Yes, in this room, it’s truly all about the students.”

Largest Recognized District in Texas - Once Again For the fourth consecutive year, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the largest Recognized school district in Texas. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) confirmed that an appeal was granted and CFISD’s accountability rating was changed to Recognized. The increase in rating came as a result of an appeal to recalculate the TAKS science passing percentage for Dean Middle School. The decision changed the campus’ accountability rating to Academically Acceptable.

STAAR TEST TO REPLACE TAKS TEST STAAR, State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, has replaced TAKS. As the Texas Education Agency distributes information to the district about this new assessment program, we will post on the website at www.cfisd.net. TEA may not finalize all information until the beginning of the spring semester, so we encourage you to revisit the website throughout the school year. Be assured, we will post information as soon as it is available to the district. You can access information in several ways: 1. STAAR information will be posted on each campus’ web page. 2. STAAR is accessible from Quick Links on the homepage of the district website. 3. A STAAR resources link is posted on the homepage of the district website under District News. 4. Campuses will include information in parent newsletters. If you have any questions, please contact your school principal, CFISD curriculum and instruction team or TEA.

Covenant Lutheran Church “Blue Christmas” Worship Service Christmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved family member who has recently died; it may trigger some other sadness; it may be a time that has always been difficult. The constant refrain on the radio and television, in shopping malls and churches about the happiness of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation - all these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. We need the space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern; we need to know that we are not alone. Our spirits sink, as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us. For these reasons, Covenant Lutheran Church, 3785 Barker Cypress Rd, Houston offers a special “Blue Christmas” (also known as “Longest Night”) service on December 21st at 7:00 pm.

US Military K-9 Fund, Inc. US Military K-9 Fund, Inc. would like to thank our supporters, who are helping us send “care packages” designed especially for the military dogs deployed with our troops to the Middle East. We are so grateful to the Girl Scouts that have given some of their cookie money to us, Longenbaugh Vet Hospital, Rover Oaks Pet Resort, Animal Hospital Jones Road, Cypress Cares, Copperfield Women’s Club and others for enabling us to continue sending the “care packages” to the dogs that are saving lives. We are celebrating having been able to send over 150 boxes so far. And we have only just begun… With HELP from everyone who has dogs or loves dogs, we can make a difference in these dogs ability to keep our men and women safer by sensing what humans cannot. They go where machines cannot. They smell what machines cannot. And, they are a “force multiplier.” Help us send them dog boots, dog goggles, cooling/warming vests, toys, treats and grooming items. Their handlers get some things too! Go to www.usmilitaryk-9fund.org to learn more.

U.S. FLAG ETIQUETTE Those of us who have a flagpole on our property from which to fly the U.S. Flag should keep in mind key points of U.S. Flag etiquette, which we may have forgotten amid today’s maddening pace of life. Distilled from the U.S. Flag Code, at www.ushistory.org: The U.S. Flag, a representative symbol of a living country, should be treated as a living thing and cared for as such; • The U.S. Flag should never touch anything beneath it, including the ground; • The U.S. Flag traditionally is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset; • The U.S. Flag must be properly illuminated if flown at night; • The U.S. Flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously; • The U.S. Flag should not be displayed on days when weather is inclement; (except if it is made of all-weather material); • If a State flag is also to be flown from the same mast, the U.S. Flag must be equal to or larger than the State flag; the U.S. Flag must always be at the top on the same halyard or raised first and lowered last if flags are on separate halyards. • The flag for any country is a source of pride and inspiration for the people. It deserves a certain amount of respect. The flag should be properly folded and cared for when not flown. • When proclamation by The President or Governor is given for the U.S. Flag to be flown at half-mast, the flag is first hoisted to the peak, then lowered to half-mast for the day. At the time for lowering, the flag is first raised to the peak and then lowered, (The exception is Memorial Day: The flag is flown at half-mast only until noon. At noon, the flag is again raised to the top and lowered at end of day).
