Bradford Colony 1 & 2 Dictionary.com has several definitions for the word “colony.” The most fitting is:

“A group of people with the same interests...concentrated in a particular area.”

Bradford Colony Neighbors, we all have the same interests in this area, which is to provide a safe, clean and respectful environment for our families. To this end we have taken several steps over the past few years to address some issues to strengthen the security of the neighborhood. We added the security cameras, which record the traffic in and out of the community, and the fences along the bayou to restrict the foot traffic and access to the neighborhood from behind our homes. These are only part of the solution. YOU are the best deterrent to crime and trouble in our Colony. Get to know your fellow “colonists” and if you see something out of place, say something.

Also, it should go without saying, but please respect the rules. Please be respectful of your neighbors when parking or hosting an event at your home, encourage your guests to be respectful coming and going, and remember that while you may be enjoying the season, some neighbors may have to work in the morning (or night). Let’s keep the neighborhood looking great by not putting out our trash too early or leaving the cans in the public view. Put your trash cans in the garage or backyard, please.

We hope that 2012 brings everyone in our colony much joy, happiness and prosperity! That is an interest I know we all share.

As in past years, our small neighborhood has again demonstrated their holiday spirit in creating a “Texas Winter Wonderland.” We want to thank everyone who took the time to decorate their homes during this special season.

The management company (ACMP) makes two inspections per month through the neighborhood for the purpose of identifying various deed restriction violation (DRV) issues. These inspections are part of our contract agreement with ACMP. Every subsequent DRV letter that is sent out to the residents costs the HOA - and therefore the residents - money to cover the cost of postage, supplies and copies. Even in our small neighborhood, these charges add up and are a significant part of our budget.

If a DRV is not corrected in a timely fashion, ACMP takes a photo of the specific DRV issue and then sends a certified letter to the property owner in question with a request to correct the issue. The charges for these photos and certified letters are initially paid by the HOA but are billed back to the property owner in question for their eventual payment to ACMP. We would like to thank all the residents who put in the time and effort to take care of their homes and yards. In addition to making the neighborhood look as good as possible as well as maximize property values, you are also minimizing the charges that the HOA (and the residents) have to pay for DRV related notification and enforcement activities.

(BCS3) STREET LIGHT OUTAGES To report a street light outage or request a repair to a street light, you will need to get the six digit number of the street light (it is normally located on the side of the pole facing the street) You will also need the approximate address of the street light (e.g. house near the pole). Charlestown Colony (ChC) Happy New Year!

Thanks to all those who decorated their homes so beautifully for the holidays. What a beautiful sight to see and a difficult choice to pick the winner of the Holiday Decoration contest. The winner will be published in the February newsletter as the January letter one goes to press before the selection is made. It is wonderful to drive around the area and see all the beautiful decoration.

(ChC) Homeowner Assessments

Everyone has received their assessment for 2012. We kept our assessments at the same rate as last year, but unless everyone pays their fair share of our neighborhood assessments this year, an increase will be in our future.

We do have homeowners who continue to owe assessments. The assessments are not optional; they are mandatory and are due in January of each year. If you can’t pay your total assessment by the due date, please call DebbieKay at SCS Management at 281-500-7106.

She will be happy to speak with you and may possibly be able to offer a payment plan. If you have past due assessments, you are continuing to accrue charges and fees on your outstanding assessments. If you choose to sell your home, all outstanding fees and assessments must be paid before you will be able to close on the home.

Our annual assessments pay for repairs to playground equipment, lighting along our streets and in the park, maintenance of common areas, sprinkler system maintenance, water for common areas, and the brick fences at our entrance. In our future, we will be replacing the brick fence on the west side of our entrance due to erosion. We replaced the east side of the entrance in 2010 and look forward to having the remainder of this work completed.

(ChC) Dog Feces in the Park and Common Areas

It has been reported that residents have been seen allowing their dog(s) to relieve themselves in the park and common areas of the neighborhood.

We do appreciate our responsible pet owners who carry bags with them to pick up after their dogs! Residents who do not pick up after their pet may be fined. Dog feces in the park and common areas aren’t just a nuisance, it’s are a health hazard to unsuspecting people who step in it or get it on their clothing or shoes.

We think the park and common areas are great places to exercise your 4-legged family member, please just remember that these areas are also used by children!

(ChC) Winter Lawns and Gardens

In our December water bill, MUD 102 put a note that lawns and gardens don’t need as much watering during the winter months as in the heat the rest of the year. This is so very true! We have been fortunate to get some good rains in November and actually improve a bit on our rainfall totals for the year.

For the past 12 months our area has gotten about 21 inches of rain (www. harriscountyfws.org). Houston’s normal rainfall is about 48 inches. We are still way below normal. Water wisely. Start thinking about applying fertilizers and herbicides in the next few months. The healthier our lawns and gardens are when the heat arrives, the better they will handle the hot weather and predicted draught.

(ChC) Mark the Dates!

Do you know when our trash company will not collect trash during 2012? Our trash pick-up is scheduled for Monday and Thursday. Recycling is collected on Monday only. WCA, our trash collection contractor, observes six holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Collection will not occur on these days. In the event that a collection day falls on a holiday for residents receiving TWICE-weekly service (that’s us), collection will roll to the next SCHEDULED collection day.

There is no trash collection on Tuesday or Friday if our regular collection day falls on a holiday.

Remember a large amount of trash can often be recycled. Check the details at http://www.wcawaste.com/Houston/houston-residential. html. According to the website, they do not take plastic bags. However, most grocery stores have bins that take any recycle number plastic bags. The website also says they don’t take wrapping paper. All the schools in the area have recycle bins that will take just about any kind of paper. WCA does take phone books. If you need an additional bin(s) or have any questions regarding WCA’s residential recycling program, please contact WCA Residential Office at 281-368-8397.

As the New Year begins and we all consider resolutions, consider volunteering to help the neighborhood board. Remember, helping is its own reward and can be a positive on a job resume. It is through the work of many that we can keep our association dues low. We need a new volunteer to be Chairperson of the Yard of the Month.

If there is regular walker who would be willing to take note of all neighborhood landscaping, then Yard of the Month is a great way to contribute to your neighborhood. Yard of the Month starts up again in March. Please contact a board member if interested. Their numbers are in the back of this publication. Without a new Chairperson, it is possible that we won’t have a Yard of the Month program in 2012.

(ChC) Planning Home Improvements during the Cooler Weather?

Cooler temperatures are often a great time to work on home improvements. You can work outside and not collapse due to heat exhaustion. However, please remember that major changes to your exterior home require architectural approval. The turnaround time is less than 30 days and can be as short as a few days in an emergency. (JC) SPRING COMMUNITY EVENTS

The 5th Annual Jamestown Community Garage Sale is tentatively being planned for March 17, 2012, the Saturday at the end of the week of CyFair ISD’s Spring Break. Start cleaning out your closets and garages. The usual signs and newspaper ads will be placed well in advance to ensure a big turnout by potential buyers.

The tentative date for the 2012 Easter Egg Hunt in the Section 1 park is March 31st. The final date will be announced early next year.

Remember that your homeowner assessment was due January 1st and begins to accrue late fees and penalties after January 31st. You can either send a check to ACMP based on the 2012 statement sent to you, or you can pay online at www.jamestowncolony.com (if you pay online, you are responsible for any service fees for your online payment). If you can’t pay the entire assessment at one time, contact ACMP at 281-855-9867 to arrange a payment plan. As long as you make such arrangements and stick to the payment plan, you will not be assessed penalties and late fees. Remember that your assessment will be larger this year and next till we get the new perimeter fence paid off.

Make a resolution to reduce your carbon footprint this year.

For those spring painting projects, make a point of buying low or zero VOC paints. VOC stands for VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS and they can aggravate asthma and contribute to global warming.

If you don’t have the time or funds to redo your entire home or a whole room, try painting just one wall in a bold color or give a worn piece of furniture a new look with some a new paint treatment.

And did you know most wallpaper paste contains pesticides? Try making your own. Combine 1 cup of flour (wheat, corn, or rice), 3 teaspoons of alum, water and 10 drops oil of cloves (a natural preservative). Combine the flour and alum in a double boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, set a smaller pan inside a bigger one that contains enough water that can be brought to a boil without overflowing. Add enough water to make a consistency of heavy cream and stir until blended. Heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture has thickened to a gravy texture. Let cool. Stir in the clove oil. Pour into a glass jar with a screw top. When you’re ready to install your wallpaper, apply with a glue brush. Makes 1 cup with a shelf life of 2 weeks (refrigerated). There is no commercial wallpaper paste that works as well and is free of pesticides.

Here are some other homemade recipes for a lot of the stuff you buy at the store. We’ll give you more over the next couple of months.

All-Purpose Cleaner 1 quart warm water 1 teaspoon liquid soap 1 teaspoon borax 1/4 cup undiluted white vinegar Mix ingredients, and store in a spray bottle. Use for cleaning countertops, floors, walls, carpets and upholstery.

Scouring Cleansers Sprinkle baking soda, or mix baking soda with water, and scrub with a wet sponge. If the baking soda leaves a residue, rinse with cold water and vinegar. Dry with a cloth.

Glass Cleaner Mix 1 quart warm water and 1/4 cup white vinegar or 2 tablespoons lemon juice, and store in a spray bottle.

Disinfectants 1. Use 1/2 cup of borax in 1 gallon of hot water.

2. Hydrogen Peroxide (3% solution) is also an effective disinfectant.

Mildew Removers 1. Scrub mildew spots with borax/water solution (1/2 cup borax to 1 gallon water) using a nylon scouring pad. To prevent mold or mildew from forming, don’t rinse off the borax.

2. Scrub with a vinegar and salt paste.

3. If you have major problems, the best solution is heat. Applying heat to an area will kill mold and mildew.

Many dogs have been seen running loose in the subdivision. It is the owner’s responsibility to have your animal on a leash while walking in a public area AND pick up your dog “poop.” Also, PLEASE respect your neighbors and don’t let you animal BARK ALL NIGHT. We have had many complaints about dogs barking at all hours in the night. It is up to you to control your animal and not allow it to bark late at night and disturb your neighbors.

Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Legacy It’s difficult to sum up the contributions of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. in a single day, but it is, nevertheless, a positive thing that America has an official holiday to honor his accomplishments and vision. This special commemoration is generally celebrated on the third Monday of the month of January. In 2012, this commemoration will take place January 16th.

The purpose of Martin Luther King Day is to mark the tremendous legacy of an American who fought for freedom, racial equality, justice and peace, never espousing his goals with hatred or violence. He endured many difficulties with amazing courage and worked with the hope of bringing people together in unity.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food.

• Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering.

• Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms.

• Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks.

Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting.

• Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in.

• Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown.

• Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure.

• Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

Local Teen Actors perform Kissless Off-Broadway in the prestigious New York Musical Theatre Festival The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) Actors Academy cast of Kissless returned to Houston after performing at the 2011 New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF). The cast of 27 Houston teens and young adults performed six times at the Off-Broadway Theatre at St. Clement’s.

Kissless, with book, music and lyrics by Houston’s own Chance McClain, tells the story of two very different people forced to live together for the summer and the unlikely relationship that develops to the dismay of their friends and family. With a raucous cast of characters including Abercrombie jocks, misfit Goths, brainy nerds and backwards rednecks, Kissless the Musical tugs on heart strings between belly-laughs. A genre-hopping score paces this completely original look at what it is like to be a teen in the 21st century.

CYPRESS FALLS HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR 2012! We had a wonderful closing of our 2011 year. December was a flurry of activity. The Holiday Concert was beautifully arranged with traditional carols and an eclectic mix of international seasonal songs with accompaniment. Labay men’s choir shared their vocal talent to the festivities. It was a feast for the eyes, ears and soul. A perfect blending for a perfect start to the holidays.

The students threw a joyous party with admission being non perishable food items to help out our neighbors in need. Amongst the fun was dancing, singing, the museum game and hilarity of the white elephant gift exchange. Don’t forget the mountains of cakes, cookies, flan and more cookies!!!

Auditions for the Area choir will take place January 7th in San Antonio. We wish all our participating members courage as they meet this challenge head on. Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) performance for the men’s choir will be this year. It is quite an honor to be chosen to participate and our men have been working diligently on their vocals. This will be in San Antonio and no doubt surrounded with fun as memories are made. UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest takes place on January 27th. Sing steady Eagles! A sweepstakes will be the hopeful theme of the day!

Pizzazz is the annual variety show held in the auditorium of the high school. It is always well done, complete with choreography, costumes and set design. This family event will be on February 24th and 25th. Mark your calendars now as this is one show you do not want to miss! This is always a highlight to our school year. Children established a goal of collecting 65 food items in a month and surpassed their goal by 301 in two weeks. Teachers aided the counting process, introducing place value to understand the value of three-digit numbers and tracking total donations on a large chart. Kindergartners practiced three-digit addition and subtraction problems to account for the total number of food items. All food items will be donated to Cypress Assistance Ministries for Thanksgiving. In addition, students were taught the value of service and sharing, especially in tough economic times when it is difficult to give freely.

Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood. As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency.

He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordan’s focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.

CWC Women Serving the Community The women’s club closed the year with a wonderful Holiday Party at Tapas Capriccio. We celebrated with our friends and are ready to start the new year as “The Cy-Fair Women’s Club.” Our first meeting in 2012 will be on January 5th at the West Houston Church of Christ at 7:00 pm. Houston Fire Fighters Making Houston the City with the Biggest Heart FOR MDA It’s official, Houstonians through the Houston Fire Fighters raised a record breaking $509,961 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association making them the #1 Fill-the-Boot department in the country for the last 9 out of 10 years raising more than $6.3 million during that time.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-theBoot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will also be out March 10th, April 14th and May 12th to collect funds for the campaign.

The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas.
