Annual Homeowners Fees Due January 1, 2012 You have received your invoice for the 2012 homeowners’ assessment. This amount is due January 1st and will be delinquent on February 1st. If you need to set up a payment plan, please contact Crest Management immediately. It is important that this money is collected in order to maintain our neighborhood. These fees can be paid by credit card, by mail and/or phone. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR ALTERNATE METHODS TO PAY THESE FEES.

Santa’s Visit

Santa will ride through the neighborhood again this year with candy for the children. Watch and listen for the fire truck on Saturday, December 17th.

Christmas Decoration Judging Selections for outstanding decorations will be made on Sunday, December 18th. Please have your lights on at dark, so they can be shared by your neighbors as well as the judges. In order to distribute the honor, homes that were selected in the past three years will not be eligible this year.

New Year’s Eve Celebrations If fireworks are allowed this year, please use common sense. If you have pets, please protect them during the New Years’ celebrations. Many animals are frightened by the fireworks and could hurt themselves or others when startled by the sounds.

They should not be left alone outside during this time.

One of our traditional fireworks holidays is approaching. Please be considerate of your neighbors while enjoying the tradition of fireworks on New Years’ Eve. Don’t use people or cars as targets for bottle rockets and roman candles. It would be tragic to cause injury or damage on this exciting holiday.

• Please don’t direct any fireworks at anything or anyone.

• Please don’t shoot fireworks off before 9 AM or after 10 PM on any day, (except New Year’s Eve: try to finish by 1 AM).

• Avoid shooting fireworks that shoot up or fly through the air.

• If a car comes down the street, get out of its way and do not light any fireworks while it is passing.

• Don’t make the “fireworks holiday” turn into a month of fireworks. Often frightened pets must be taken inside while the fireworks are going off.

• MOST IMPORTANT: Clean up the mess! Sweep the streets and drives (and don’t forget to pick up the items that accidentally went into your neighbor’s yard).

If you have a problem with someone that is shooting off the fireworks, please call the Constable’s office and ask for an officer to come by.

Oversize Commercial Vehicles No Overnight Parking Signs are posted at all entrances to Concord Bridge restricting overnight parking for commercial vehicles. A majority of homeowners signed partitions asking for this ruling. Over size commercial vehicles are restricted from parking in Concord Bridge over night. You must move these vehicles to an acceptable and legal parking area outside Concord Bridge or risk receiving a ticket.

It is also against your deed restrictions to park these vehicles in our neighborhood. You not only run the risk of getting a ticket, you could incur fines from the Homeowner’s Association too.

Annual Meeting and Elections November 17, 2011 The meeting and elections were held on November 17, 2011. However information for the newsletter had to be submitted November 10, 2011. Election results will be published in the January 2012 Crier.

WATER LOGIC PRESENTATION: Troy Goodell and Raul Arriondo presented the board with the equipment that they would install to manage irrigation water use and expense. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the proposal presented by Water Logic for the new controllers and irrigation system.

Watch, Listen and Report In early November one of our Concord Bridge residents reported a burglary in process. Due to his quick actions this burglary was thwarted. Pay attention to things going on around your home and your neighbor’s homes. Report suspicious activities by calling the Precinct 5 Constables office at 281-463-6666.

Vacation Watch Vacations occur year round and the Precinct 5 Constables offer a very valuable service. If you complete a Vacation Watch form they will drive by and check your home while you are away. This form is available on the Precinct 5 Constable’s website, www.co.harris.tx.us/pct5 on the Concord Bridge website, www.concordbridgeonline.com and in this publication. You can also ask for a copy from one of the officers. Information on how to mail or fax it is on the form. It’s also a good idea to let a trusted neighbor know that you will be gone so they can report unusual activity at your home during your absence.

A NON-WORKING STREET LIGHT? If you encounter a streetlight that is not working, you can report it by phone or on the internet. Please have as much information as possible, the location of the light, approximate address or closest intersection, and if possible, the number on the pole. The only way for a light to be repaired is for us to report it. You can report it by phone at 713-207-2222 or at www.centerpointenergy.com/outage.

TRASH PICK UP Please remember that our trash pick up days are Monday and Thursday. Heavy trash day is Thursday and the trash company is required to pick up heavy items approved on their retrieval list. If a holiday falls on trash day, it will not be picked up the next day. It will be picked up the next scheduled pick up day.

Beat the Holiday Blues Check out these few tips on how to beat the holiday blues and be happy!

• Be realistic. Some people experience not enough family, fun, and friendship so be kind to yourself.

• Create your own traditions. As families change and grow, traditions change, too. As long as you do the traditions with a joyful heart, the celebrations you create will become your family’s cherished rituals.

• Help others. It is the best antidote to self-pity and seasonal sadness. Find someone who is struggling more than you are, lend them a helping hand and remember the real meaning of the holidays.

• Seek sacred space. Visit a place of worship.

Simply sitting in a sacred space can remind you of the true meaning of the holidays.

• Take care of your body. Eat well, drink plenty of water, exercise and get plenty of rest. The littlest bit of movement will lift your spirits and reducing the amount of junk food, sugar and alcohol you consume will reduce your blues.

• Be financially responsible. Overspending during the holidays will not only increase your stress now, but will also leave you feeling anxious as you struggle to pay the bills. Buck the holiday system of excessive gift-giving and practice simplicity, creativity and basic human kindness.

• Grieve. If a friend or family member has recently died, honor their memory.

Create an altar with pictures of those you love; light candles every night for someone you have lost; play sacred music and allow yourself to cry, remember, heal.

• Forgive. Forgive all sorts of people this holiday season. Read the stories of who have used forgiveness to move mountains. If they can do it, so can we.

• Love... everything. Love it all. From the corny Christmas music to the house guests who won’t leave. Love even the hard times; even the cranky and crooked people of the world; even yourself, with all of your imperfections.

Cypress Hoops Invitational The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation will host the Cypress Hoops Invitational on Thursday, December 8th - Saturday, December 10th. As a partner with the district, our goal is to create a successful high school basketball tournament that engages the entire community. Profits from the tournament will benefit our “Donate to Educate” program. This program provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD for innovative and creative teacher training. North Cypress Sports Medicine Center has generously agreed to underwrite the event for the second year.

The tournament will have twenty-four teams including the ten CFISD boy’s varsity teams and fourteen out of district teams. Games will be held at the Berry Center, Cy-Lakes High School, Cy-Ranch High School and Langham Creek High School. Tickets can be purchased at the Berry Center during normal business hours. Ticket prices are: $20 for a 3-day tournament pass, $3 for an adult single game ticket and $2 for a student single game ticket.

CFISD – SALUTE TO OUR HEROES Saturday, February 11th at The Onmi Westside Houston. Salute to Our Heroes will honor the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Largest Recognized District in Texas - Once Again

It was barely 8:00 AM in the morning on Friday, Oct. 14th.

They were beginning to arrive. Upon checking in; name badges were handed out along with a bright red folder full of the day’s agenda and the conference material. There was even an eco-friendly tote bag full of coupons and goodies generously donated by local area businesses. The room was huge and full of tables decorated with bright paper blocks spelling out the main part of this year’s theme, “Teamwork.”

For the fourth consecutive year, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the largest Recognized school district in Texas. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) confirmed that an appeal was granted and CFISD’s accountability rating was changed to Recognized. The increase in rating came as a result of an appeal to recalculate the TAKS science passing percentage for Dean Middle School. The decision changed the campus’ accountability rating to Academically Acceptable.

This was the annual VIPS Fall Conference held by the CFISD VIPS Executive Board at the Berry Center in Cypress. The schedule was full. It consisted of everything from learning how to turn a popsicle stick into a fun treat for a teacher or volunteer to tips on helping our students handle stress. The attendees could choose from a variety of 50 minute sessions that covered topics such as: Internet Safety; Reaching Out to Diverse Volunteers; Guidelines and Best Practices for Fundraising; and even Taking Care of Your Personal Health While Maintaining a Busy Lifestyle.

STAAR, State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, has replaced TAKS. As the Texas Education Agency distributes information to the district about this new assessment program, we will post on the website at www. cfisd.net. TEA may not finalize all information until the beginning of the spring semester, so we encourage you to revisit the website throughout the school year. Be assured, we will post information as soon as it is available to the district.

Something was most impressive about this conference to one volunteer. This audience of 200 plus was comprised of men and women, volunteers and school staff - not limited to Cy-Fair ISD. There were 4 other area districts represented at this conference: Alief ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Houston ISD and Spring ISD. The current budget environment has left our school districts vying to be first in line for every resource of financial and physical support they can find. But for one day in October, the district boundary lines came down. There was no competition. There was no hidden agenda. Despite the traffic and everyday challenges, educators and volunteers from schools all over our county came together for a common purpose: improving their volunteer program thereby affecting the students in a positive way. This was simply an opportunity to attend an event that focused on several different areas of how to build on their volunteer resources in order to enhance the children’s education. While that volunteer sat looking out over the diverse crowd; she couldn’t help but see a universal theme, “Yes, in this room, it’s truly all about the students.”

CRBS FLAG FOOTBALL PLAYS TOUGH Takes Second in Conference!

Clay Road Baptist School (CRBS) Middle School Flag Football team took second place in the West Houston Christian Athletics Conference (WHCAC) championship on Saturday, October 29th, held at Southwest Christian Academy. The CRBS Eagles held Calvary Episcopal School to two touchdowns in a heavily defensive game against a very tough, disciplined team until the very last play, with the final score being 20-0. CRBS played against eight teams in the WHCAC from August to October.

The Houston Repertoire Ballet (HRB) is a non-profit 501(c)(3), founded by Victoria Vittum and Gilbert Rome, both nationally acclaimed teachers and choreographers who served as its co-artistic directors.

Today, Ms. Vittum oversees training and programming with an equal eye to serving the needs of the community. Although Mr. Rome is now retired, he maintains his interest and affiliation with HRB, performing as Drosselmeyer in “The Nutcracker” and as a guest teacher. The program attracts and develops some of the finest young dancers in the greater Houston area, with many of the dancers advancing to professional ballet companies throughout the country.

Major funding for HRB is provided by Houston Endowment, Inc. and ConocoPhillips. Additional support comes from ExxonMobil and Marathon. School Outreach Program is generously sponsored by Target.

Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest).

As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood.

As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children's on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation.

Boy Scout Troop 61 Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. Houston Fire Fighters Making Houston the City with the Biggest Heart FOR MDA It’s official, Houstonians through the Houston Fire Fighters raised a record breaking $509,961 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association making them the #1 Fill-the-Boot department in the country for the last 9 out of 10 years raising more than $6.3 million during that time.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-theBoot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. U.S. FLAG ETIQUETTE Those of us who have a flagpole on our property from which to fly the U.S. Flag should keep in mind key points of U.S. Flag etiquette, which we may have forgotten amid today’s maddening pace of life.

Distilled from the U.S. Flag Code, at www.ushistory.org: The U.S. Flag, a representative symbol of a living country, should be treated as a living thing and cared for as such; • The U.S. Flag should never touch anything beneath it, including the ground; • The U.S. Flag traditionally is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset; • The U.S. Flag must be properly illuminated if flown at night; • The U.S. Flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously; • The U.S. Flag should not be displayed on days when weather is inclement; (except if it is made of all-weather material); • If a State flag is also to be flown from the same mast, the U.S. Flag must be equal to or larger than the State flag; the U.S. Flag must always be at the top on the same halyard or raised first and lowered last if flags are on separate halyards.

• The flag for any country is a source of pride and inspiration for the people. It deserves a certain amount of respect. The flag should be properly folded and cared for when not flown.

Healthy Holiday Eating Who says you’ll gain weight during the holidays? Only YOU. You can avoid the extra pounds tempting you to overeat this holiday season with one simple tool: will power. Do check out these tips as you maintain - or even lose - weight these next few weeks: Eat before you go to a party. This is one of the best tricks to avoid overeating at gatherings. Add fiber rich foods (ex. 100% whole wheat) to whatever you eat so you’ll feel full. Plus, eating fruit will help curb that sweet tooth.

• Feast for a couple of days, then return to normal. Buy less and don’t let the holiday season turn into an excuse for a month of bingeing.

• Cut up a box of mini-sticks of celery and nibble on them when you need a snack. Celery keeps blood pressure low, and helps lower cholesterol too.

• Keep reading the labels, but don’t be fooled. Are ‘lite’ potato chips or crisps really a great health option? Yes, you could save a worthwhile 20 calories on a packet - but they’re still a high-fat food, so go easy.

• Out of sight is out of mouth. Hide away indulgent puddings, cream and other temptations in the salad drawer, so they don’t beckon every time you open the fridge door.

• Brazil nuts are rich in selenium, which improves mood and reduces anxiety. Eat just 3 a day.

• If you’re used to working out, have a vigorous session the day before a feast and you’ll burn extra calories more efficiently.

• Cinnamon balances blood sugar and reduces ill effects of sweet foods. Stir a little into tea or coffee.
