Garbage pick up occurs on Mondays and Thursdays.

On the following holidays, our garbage is not collected and it will not be collected until the next designated pick up date. In other words, trash will NOT be picked up the day after a holiday.

How Do We Look?

Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is not for sale.

Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up.

Cars that are parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better and is safer for your neighbors and your car.

RECIPES MOUND BARS

2 cup crushed graham crackers 1/4 cup powdered sugar 1/2 cup butter 1 can sweetened condensed milk 8 oz. pkg. coconut (2 1/2 cups) 1 12 oz. package real chocolate chips DIRECTIONS: Mix graham crackers, powdered sugar and melted butter and pat into 9 x 13 pan. Bake 12 minutes at 350°F. Mix condensed milk and coconut together and spread over crust. Bake 12 minutes at 350°F. Remove from oven. Sprinkle with real chocolate chips. Spread when melted.

Cool and cut into squares.

Praline Cookies

1/2 cup butter 1 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1 Egg 1 1/2 cup flour 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup chopped pecans

Heat oven to 350°F. Cream butter, sugar and egg. Stir in flour, vanilla and pecans.

Mix well by hand. Shape into balls about the size of walnuts, place on cookie sheets and flatten to about 1/8 inch. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely and harden.

(CWC) COPPERFIELD WOMEN’S CLUB Women Serving the Community

Due to a very exciting and successful year, the Copperfield Women’s Club will change its name to the Cy-Fair Women’s Club!

Membership to our club is open to all ladies in the Northwest Houston neighborhoods. We look forward to sharing an adventurous new year with new members from the Copperfield area, as well as the entire Cy-Fair area. Our name change will take place as of January 1, 2012.

If you are not familiar with our club, we are a service organization that gives back to the community. All funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community as well.

Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ at 7:00 PM for social time and refreshments, followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at Queenston and West Road.

If there are any adventurous ladies out there, that love to have fun and would like to participate in giving back to the community, we encourage you to come join us! Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships. We look forward to meeting you!

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.

• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.

• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.

• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again.

• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.

• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.

• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Salt Dough Snowman Ornament

By: Amanda Formaro Difficulty: Very Easy Age: 5 and up Creating salt dough is a fun activity for kids and it’s a great material to use to create homemade ornaments, so this is like two crafts in one!

For this ornament, kids can shape the dough into a simple snowman that would be a great gift to give a friend for the holidays.

1 tablespoon salt 2 tablespoons flour 1 tablespoon water Bowl Spoon Cookie sheet Toothpick Paint: white, orange and black Paintbrush Ribbon Acrylic sealer spray Place flour, salt and water in a bowl and mix with the spoon. Once the dough is combined, pick it up in your hand and knead it with your fingers until smooth.

Remove a small piece of dough for making the nose and roll the larger piece of dough between your palms to form a ball.

Press the ball down onto the cookie sheet with the palm of your hand, flattening it out.

Roll the small piece of dough with your fingers into a carrot shape.

Press firmly but gently onto the round flattened dough.

Insert toothpick toward the top of the head, but not too close to the edge. Move the toothpick in a circular motion to enlarge the hole so that it is big enough to run a piece of ribbon through.

Bake ornament at 250 degrees for 2 hours. Remove from oven and let cool on a rack.

When completely cool, paint the round section white and the nose orange.

Use the handle end of a paintbrush dipped in black paint to dot on the snowman’s eyes and mouth. Let dry.

An adult should spray the ornament with a couple of coats of sealer.

When dry, tie a ribbon hanger through the hole in the top.

Tips: If you want to create a perfect circle, place dough inside a round biscuit or cookie cutter and spread with your fingers.

Salt dough will break if dropped, so handle the ornament with care.

The oven step can be skipped if you allow the ornament to dry overnight.

Cypress Hoops Invitational

The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation will host the Cypress Hoops Invitational on Thursday, December 8th - Saturday, December 10th. As a partner with the district, our goal is to create a successful high school basketball tournament that engages the entire community. CFISD VIPS FALL CONFERENCE

It was barely 8:00 AM in the morning on Friday, Oct. 14th. They were beginning to arrive. Upon checking in; name badges were handed out along with a bright red folder full of the day’s agenda and the conference material. There was even an eco-friendly tote bag full of coupons and goodies generously donated by local area businesses.

The room was huge and full of tables decorated with bright paper blocks spelling out the main part of this year’s theme, “Teamwork.”

This was the annual VIPS Fall Conference held by the CFISD VIPS Executive Board at the Berry Center in Cypress. The schedule was full. It consisted of everything from learning how to turn a popsicle stick into a fun treat for a teacher or volunteer to tips on helping our students handle stress. The attendees could choose from a variety of 50 minute sessions that covered topics such as: Internet Safety; Reaching Out to Diverse Volunteers; Guidelines and Best Practices for Fundraising; and even Taking Care of Your Personal Health While Maintaining a Busy Lifestyle.

Something was most impressive about this conference to one volunteer. This audience of 200 plus was comprised of men and women, volunteers and school staff - not limited to Cy-Fair ISD. There were 4 other area districts represented at this conference: Alief ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Houston ISD and Spring ISD. The current budget environment has left our school districts vying to be first in line for every resource of financial and physical support they can find. But for one day in October, the district boundary lines came down. There was no competition. There was no hidden agenda. Despite the traffic and everyday challenges, educators and volunteers from schools all over our county came together for a common purpose: improving their volunteer program thereby affecting the students in a positive way.

This was simply an opportunity to attend an event that focused on several different areas of how to build on their volunteer resources in order to enhance the children’s education. While that volunteer sat looking out over the diverse crowd; she couldn’t help but see a universal theme, “Yes, in this room, it’s truly all about the students.”

Largest Recognized District in Texas - Once Again

For the fourth consecutive year, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the largest Recognized school district in Texas. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) confirmed that an appeal was granted and CFISD’s accountability rating was changed to Recognized. The increase in rating came as a result of an appeal to recalculate the TAKS science passing percentage for Dean Middle School.

The decision changed the campus’ accountability rating to Academically Acceptable.

STAAR TEST TO REPLACE TAKS TEST

STAAR, State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, has replaced TAKS. As the Texas Education Agency distributes information to the district about this new assessment program, we will post on the website at www.cfisd.net. TEA may not finalize all information until the beginning of the spring semester, so we encourage you to revisit the website throughout the school year. Be assured, we will post information as soon as it is available to the district.

CRBS FLAG FOOTBALL PLAYS TOUGH Takes Second in Conference!

Clay Road Baptist School (CRBS) Middle School Flag Football team took second place in the West Houston Christian Athletics Conference (WHCAC) championship on Saturday, October 29th, held at Southwest Christian Academy. The CRBS Eagles held Calvary Episcopal School to two touchdowns in a heavily defensive game against a very tough, disciplined team until the very last play, with the final score being 20-0. CRBS played against eight teams in the WHCAC from August to October.

The Cy-Fair Holiday & Health Festival and Layla Grace 5K

The Cy-Fair Holiday & Health Festival and Layla Grace 5K will be held at the Berry Center on Dec. 3rd. This family-friendly, community event is free to the public and will feature over 100 exhibitors to help Cypress residents get into the holiday spirit and help raise money for a good cause.

Houston Repertoire Ballet Celebrates 10 Years En Pointe with “The Nutcracker” Sell-Out Performances Set for December 10th & 11th

Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood.

As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordan’s focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.

Houston Fire Fighters Making Houston the City with the Biggest Heart FOR MDA

It’s official, Houstonians through the Houston Fire Fighters raised a record breaking $509,961 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association making them the #1 Fill-the-Boot department in the country for the last 9 out of 10 years raising more than $6.3 million during that time.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-theBoot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will also be out March 10th, April 14th and May 12th to collect funds for the campaign.

The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas.

Christmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved family member who has recently died; it may trigger some other sadness; it may be a time that has always been difficult.

The constant refrain on the radio and television, in shopping malls and churches about the happiness of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation - all these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. We need the space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern; we need to know that we are not alone.

Our spirits sink, as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us.

For these reasons, Covenant Lutheran Church, 3785 Barker Cypress Rd, Houston offers a special “Blue Christmas” (also known as “Longest Night”) service on December 21st at 7:00 pm.

St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church DivorceCare and DivorceCare for Kids

DivorceCare (for adults) and DivorceCare (for Kids) will be starting at St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church. These programs provide Christcentered help for adults and children (grades 1-6) struggling with the hurt and pain of divorce and separation. They are Christian-based support groups designed to help process and bring healing and will begin at St. Cuthbert’s on Sunday, January 9th from 4:00-6:00 PM for twelve consecutive weeks. There is a $15 registration fee for each group that covers an activity book and snacks for the program and can be paid at the first session. Scholarships are available.

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. WANTED! A FEW GOOD MUSICIANS! The Sounds of Cypress Band, formerly known as the Cy-Fair Community Band, is producing beautiful sounds, having fun as a group and seeking new members who just love to play music. The Cy-Fair Community Band was initiated about three years ago, with approximately five or six musicians coming together to explore their common interest in music and their enjoyment of playing together. They have grown to 33 members who just love to play music and share their talents for the enjoyment they get from playing. They have evolved into an accomplished group of band members and have recently changed their name to Sounds of Cypress. DeeDee Flores is director of group. By day she is a band director at Plummer Middle School. Her ability has led the group to develop polished performances, which they are anxious to share.

This accomplished group is ready to perform for group events. They have a great program of musical selections. Also, they can tailor their selections to the interests age of your group. Looking for players to formulate a Bunco Club. If you don’t know how to play Bunco, that would not be a problem – it is just a roll of the dice.

We would usually play about 2 hours an evening and another hour for eating and mingling, etc. It would be once a month, I am hoping to get at least 12 women who can play Saturday night.
