This is the time of year we see an increase in incidents of vandalism in our community parks. These parks are equipped and maintained using your homeowner’s dues, so please take ownership and report any suspicious activities you may observe to the Sheriff’s Department at 713-221-6000. Let’s put our association dues to better use.

Trash Service in Copper Lakes

Pick-up services are on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Remember that trash containers and bags - including those left by lawn crews - should not be put out until 6:00 PM the night before and removed as soon as possible after pickup. Between pick-up days, containers MUST be stored from view. Although the recycling service has been discontinued, there are newspaper drop-offs at local schools.

Harris County Alarm Detail

In order to increase compliance and spread awareness, our office is requesting your assistance in informing residents in your community through your HOA newsletter or your scheduled HOA meetings of the need to obtain a permit for operating an alarm system, residential or business, within unincorporated Harris County. Many residents and businesses are unaware of the requirement to obtain an alarm permit once an alarm system has been installed and activated by the alarm company. Alarm systems are established and defined in the Local Government Code 233 (subchapter D), as well as the authority to regulate, adopt rules and impose penalties for unpermitted locations.

Obtaining the required permit will avoid the issuance of a citation and excessive false alarm fees. The fee for current permit issuance is $35 with a yearly renewal fee of $10. All permit fees are waived for senior citizens 65 years or older. Under current guidelines, a permitted location is allowed five (5) free false alarms annually. Any subsequent false alarms during your permitted year are subject to a $75 fine that is billed to the permit holder’s address. If a site has an active alarm system, yet does not have a permit to operate such alarm, a false alarm may result in a Class C citation, which could range up to $500.

Veterinary Public Health LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.

Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more then six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question or 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle or 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk to street.”

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

Light Pole Not Working?

Do you have a street light out in your neighborhood? Our community pays a fee monthly to our electric provider for every light pole in our community. The fee is a combination of electricity cost and maintenance fee and it is paid whether the light is working or not!

It is up to each of us as residents to report outages. Here’s how to do it: 1. Write down the number posted on the light pole that is out.

2. Call Reliant Energy at 713-207-2222.

3. Select English (1) or Spanish (2).

4. Select Option #4 which includes reporting street lights out.

5. Provide the customer service representative with the location and pole number.

COPPERFIELD WOMEN’S CLUB Women Serving the Community

Due to a very exciting and successful year, the Copperfield Women’s Club will change its name to the Cy-Fair Women’s Club!

Membership to our club is open to all ladies in the Northwest Houston neighborhoods. We look forward to sharing an adventurous new year with new members from the Copperfield area, as well as the entire Cy-Fair area. Our name change will take place as of January 1, 2012.

If you are not familiar with our club, we are a service organization that gives back to the community. All funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community as well.

RECIPES MOUND BARS

Ingredients: 2 cup crushed graham crackers 1/4 cup powdered sugar 1/2 cup butter 1 can sweetened condensed milk 8 oz. pkg. coconut (2 1/2 cups) 1 12 oz. package real chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS: Mix graham crackers, powdered sugar and melted butter and pat into 9 x 13 pan. Bake 12 minutes at 350°F. Mix condensed milk and coconut together and spread over crust.

Bake 12 minutes at 350°F. Remove from oven. Sprinkle with real chocolate chips. Spread when melted. Cool and cut into squares.

Cream butter, sugar and egg. Stir in flour, vanilla and pecans. Mix well by hand. Shape into balls about the size of walnuts, place on cookie sheets and flatten to about 1/8 inch. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely and harden.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.

• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.

• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.

• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again.

• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.

• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.

• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Cypress Hoops Invitational

The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation will host the Cypress Hoops Invitational on Thursday, December 8th - Saturday, December 10th. As a partner with the district, our goal is to create a successful high school basketball tournament that engages the entire community. Profits from the tournament will benefit our “Donate to Educate” program. This program provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD for innovative and creative teacher training. North Cypress Sports Medicine Center has generously agreed to underwrite the event for the second year.

The tournament will have twenty-four teams including the ten CFISD boy’s varsity teams and fourteen out of district teams. Games will

be held at the Berry Center, Cy-Lakes High School, Cy-Ranch High School and Langham Creek High School. Tickets can be purchased at the Berry Center during normal business hours. Ticket prices are: $20 for a 3-day tournament pass, $3 for an adult single game ticket and $2 for a student single game ticket.

CFISD – SALUTE TO OUR HEROES

Saturday, February 11th at The Onmi Westside Houston. Salute to Our Heroes will honor the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event will go to an endowment, enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. Army Ranger Involved in “Black Hawk Down” Mission Keni Thomas, Bronze Star for Valor recipient, is an engaging speaker whose story captivates audiences from beginning to end. The highly successful movie “Black Hawk Down” is based on his Army Company’s mission in Mogadishu, Somalia. In addition to speaking, Thomas is a recording artist with two critically acclaimed projects.

CFISD VIPS FALL CONFERENCE

It was barely 8:00 AM in the morning on Friday, Oct. 14th. They were beginning to arrive. Upon checking in; name badges were handed out along with a bright red folder full of the day’s agenda and the conference material. There was even an eco-friendly tote bag full of coupons and goodies generously donated by local area businesses.

The room was huge and full of tables decorated with bright paper blocks spelling out the main part of this year’s theme, “Teamwork.”

It consisted of everything from learning how to turn a popsicle stick into a fun treat for a teacher or volunteer to tips on helping our students handle stress. The attendees could choose from a variety of 50 minute sessions that covered topics such as: Internet Safety; Reaching Out to Diverse Volunteers; Guidelines and Best Practices for Fundraising; and even Taking Care of Your Personal Health While Maintaining a Busy Lifestyle.

Something was most impressive about this conference to one volunteer. This audience of 200 plus was comprised of men and women, volunteers and school staff - not limited to Cy-Fair ISD. There were 4 other area districts represented at this conference: Alief ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Houston ISD and Spring ISD. The current budget environment has left our school districts vying to be first in line for every resource of financial and physical support they can find.

But for one day in October, the district boundary lines came down.

There was no competition. There was no hidden agenda. Despite the traffic and everyday challenges, educators and volunteers from schools all over our county came together for a common purpose: improving their volunteer program thereby affecting the students in a positive way. This was simply an opportunity to attend an event that focused on several different areas of how to build on their volunteer resources in order to enhance the children’s education. While that volunteer sat looking out over the diverse crowd; she couldn’t help but see a universal theme, “Yes, in this room, it’s truly all about the students.”

Largest Recognized District in Texas - Once Again

For the fourth consecutive year, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the largest Recognized school district in Texas. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) confirmed that an appeal was granted and CFISD’s accountability rating was changed to Recognized. The increase in rating came as a result of an appeal to recalculate the TAKS science passing percentage for Dean Middle School.

The decision changed the campus’ accountability rating to Academically Acceptable.

STAAR TEST TO REPLACE TAKS TEST

STAAR, State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, has replaced TAKS. As the Texas Education Agency distributes information to the district about this new assessment program, we will post on the website at www.cfisd.net. TEA may not finalize all information until the beginning of the spring semester, so we encourage you to revisit the website throughout the school year. Be assured, we will post information as soon as it is available to the

smith MIDDLE SCHOOL SMITH MIDDLE SCHOOL SEEKING COMMUNITY MENTORS

Smith Middle School is seeking community mentors to serve as positive role models for our students. Being a community mentor is extremely rewarding and only takes a commitment of 30 minutes to an hour a week to mentor/meet with one of our 6th, 7th or 8th grade students. Mentors must attend a one-time district orientation before they begin mentoring at the school. Then, it just takes 30 minutes a week to truly make a difference in the life of a child. Once you have completed the training and background check, an administrator at Smith will work with you to match you with a student who would be the best fit for you. If you enjoy working with children and making a true difference in people’s lives, the mentor program at Smith Middle School is just for you!! We are especially looking for quality male mentors to serve as role models to our male students. District mentor training dates are being held on the following dates this school year: Jan. 26th, Feb. 7th and March 22nd. Mark Jenkins Memorial Scholarship (Langham Creek Athletic Booster Club) GET AN EARLY START!!!!

The booster club is offering scholarships for Langham Creek seniors with the following requirements:

• Applicant must be a Langham Creek Senior athlete, trainer or manager of a UIL School Sanctioned Sport* • Family must be an active/participating member of the Langham Creek Athletic Booster Club.

Langham Creek Cheerleaders

The annual Langham Creek Cheerleader Cheer Clinic held on October 15th was a huge success! Approximately 100 participants came to enjoy learning about the cheerleading talents our girls display everyday and to meet and get a picture with, our outstanding Lobo mascot. The parents enjoyed the “show off” at the end of the clinic, as well as, seeing the kids perform on the sidelines with the Lobo cheerleaders at the JV game on October 19th! Thank you to everyone who came to the clinic - it really is a fun event for all. The Lobo cheerleaders had some great “nature” time on Friday, November 4th, with family and friends at their annual hayride. On a beautiful, crisp night, they roasted hot dogs and made smores over campfires, played guitar and sang and just enjoyed each others company away from the lights and complications of the city. A well deserved respite for our hard working girls! On November 7th, the cheerleaders kicked off basketball season by decorating the locker room with signs, streamers and balloons! Way to pump up our players for an exciting Lobo basketball season! Go Lobos!

CRBS FLAG FOOTBALL PLAYS TOUGH Takes Second in Conference!

Clay Road Baptist School (CRBS) Middle School Flag Football team took second place in the West Houston Christian Athletics Conference (WHCAC) championship on Saturday, October 29th, held at Southwest Christian Academy. The CRBS Eagles held Calvary Episcopal School to two touchdowns in a heavily defensive game against a very tough, disciplined team until the very last play, with the final score being 20-0. CRBS played against eight teams in the WHCAC from August to October.

CRBS VOLLEYBALL WINS CHAMPIONSHIP - Incredible 16-game winning streak!

Clay Road Baptist School (CRBS) Middle School volleyball team took the West Houston Christian Athletics Conference (WHCAC) championship on October 20, 2011, at the finals held at Logos Prep Academy in Sugarland, TX. The first match was very difficult, but ended with a win for CRBS with a score of 25-23. Calvary Episcopal School won the second match with a score of 25-15. During the final match, which led to the championship title, Samantha Skrehot hit a “hotspot” with 12 straight serves leading CRBS to a championship win with a score of 15 -2. CRBS played against twelve teams in the WHCAC from August to October.

The Cy-Fair Holiday & Health Festival and Layla Grace 5K

The Cy-Fair Holiday & Health Festival is held in conjunction with the Layla Grace 5K. Layla Grace Marsh lost her battle with Neuroblastoma at age 2. Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood.

As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received

the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordan’s focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.

Houston Fire Fighters Making Houston the City with the Biggest Heart FOR MDA

It’s official, Houstonians through the Houston Fire Fighters raised a record breaking $509,961 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association making them the #1 Fill-the-Boot department in the country for the last 9 out of 10 years raising more than $6.3 million during that time.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-theBoot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will also be out March 10th, April 14th and May 12th to collect funds for the campaign.

The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas.

Support & Help Groups St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church DivorceCare and DivorceCare for Kids

DivorceCare (for adults) and DivorceCare (for Kids) will be starting at St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church. These programs provide Christcentered help for adults and children (grades 1-6) struggling with the hurt and pain of divorce and separation. They are Christian-based support groups designed to help process and bring healing and will begin at St. Cuthbert’s on Sunday, January 9th from 4:00-6:00 PM for twelve consecutive weeks. There is a $15 registration fee for each group that covers an activity book and snacks for the program and can be paid at the first session. Scholarships are available.

At this time, childcare will not be provided. Brochures highlighting the programs are available from the church office or from Peggy Addington. Are you an at-home mom looking for some fun distractions during the day? Why not try out MOMS Club of Cypress-North! We are a chapter of the International MOMS Club, which is a national, nonprofit organization that gives at-home mothers the opportunity to share activities and discussions with other mothers and their children.

Activities are held during the day, when at-home mothers need support and interaction the most. Children are always welcome. We also organize community service projects throughout the year. Our members are moms of various ages and backgrounds with kids of all ages (newborn to high school age).

MOTHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN (MYC)

The moment a newborn baby wraps their tiny hand around a parent’s finger is a pivotal moment in the life of any parent. The baby not only tugs on the finger, but on the parent’s heart as well.

It is in that awesome moment that the parent begins to understand the unconditional and abounding love that God has for each of us.

But soon after the little miracle arrives so do all the questions and sometimes, without any clear answers.

The Mothers of Young Children (MYC) group was organized by St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church to minister to families with young children throughout the Northwest Houston community. Both stay at home and working parents are invited to participate in the group. The group supports and prays for one another, shares information and ideas on child rearing and builds lasting friendships. Most importantly, MYC’s focus is on God and God’s presence in families. Sounds of Cypress Band

WANTED! A FEW GOOD MUSICIANS! The Sounds of Cypress Band, formerly known as the Cy-Fair Community Band, is producing beautiful sounds, having fun as a group and seeking new members who just love to play music. So dust off your musical instrument and come out for practice on Tuesday nights at 7 PM at the Lone Star College College-CyFair campus in the Fine Arts Building.

The Cy-Fair Community Band was initiated about three years ago, with approximately five or six musicians coming together to explore their common interest in music and their enjoyment of playing together. They have grown to 33 members who just love to play music and share their talents for the enjoyment they get from playing. They have evolved into an accomplished group of band members and have recently changed their name to Sounds of Cypress. DeeDee Flores is director of group. By day she is a band director at Plummer Middle School. Her ability has led the group to develop polished performances, which they are anxious to share.

This accomplished group is ready to perform for group events. They have a great program of musical selections. Also, they can tailor their selections to the interests age of your group. Recycling your old computer or other electronic equipment is a great way to help those who cannot afford access to technology, but it can also help keep the environment free from dangerous pollutants and can even mean a few extra dollars in your pocket at tax time. Boy Scout Troop 61

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities.

Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery, rifle/shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and much more. PACK 445 OUT OF FIEST ELEMENTARY

Welcome to this month’s fun loving episode of “The Chronicles of Pack 445!” We spent most of November getting ready for our District Pushmobile Race! In this event, one Scout rides in a homemade car and steers while another Scout pushes him. They must maneuver their way through an obstacle course, switch drivers and pushers and get to the finish line before the other teams. While this is not Nascar, it is still very exciting to watch and play!

December brings the Parade of Lights! Our pack has floats that are overflowing with Scouts and leaders ready to celebrate the holidays!

The kids love decorating the trailers and trucks and waving to all the spectators on the streets!

Our Scorpion Patrol and Stealth Patrol were present at the World of Webelos at the end of October and took first place in campsite presentation. The Scorpion Patrol also took first place in banner and second place in cheer. All of their leaders and parents are very proud of their teamwork and accomplishments!

Pack 445 has been collecting coats and blankets to donate to the homeless. This is an opportunity for us to be good citizens by providing service to the community and to recycle at the same time!

Thank you to those in the community who have donated coats and blankets in order to help us help others.

The Pack will be taking a small break through he holidays but will be back stronger than ever in January! If you have a boy in 1st-5th grade in the Copperfield or surrounding area who would like to be a Cub Scout, please see our website at www.pack445.org.

Residents of Harris County must be aware of the regulations adopted

by Commissioners Court to meet the standards of the “Texas Rabies Control Act of 1981.” This ordinance, enforced by Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) is designed to protect the health and welfare of Harris County residents.

• Requires the annual vaccination and registration of all dogs and cats four months of age and older.

Vaccinated within the last twelve months, or; Vaccinated within the last 36 months provided that the animal was vaccinated twice within 12 months and the last vaccination was with a licensed 3-year vaccine.

• Requires dogs and cats to be physically restrained at all times, without access to the sidewalks and streets.

• Sets a REGISTRATION FEE for all dogs and cats: Updated 8/2011 $15 LIFETIME: for neutered dogs and cats. Proof of neutering required. $15 LIFETIME; for dogs and cats belonging to persons 65 years of age or older.

•NOTE: All pets with lifetime registration must be vaccinated yearly against rabies. $75 Triennial License: for dogs and cats with qualifying vaccination status. Must provide proof of two rabies vaccinations within 12 months and the last vaccination must be with an licensed 3-year vaccine $25 ANNUAL: fee for all other dogs and cats. $5 REPLACEMENT fee for Harris County tag.

Sets an IMPOUNDMENT FEE plus a boarding fee to be charged for each animal picked up. Owner may also be issued a citation for allowing the animal to run loose.

OTHER • Impounded animals shall be kept three days to allow the owner time to redeem them.

• The occupant/head of household of any premises on which a dog or cat remains for a period of seven days is presumed to be the owner of that animal.

• All animals suspected of rabies, or animals that bite, scratch or otherwise attack any person shall be impounded at the discretion of the County Health Officer, for a period of ten days under veterinary observation.

• Violators of any provision of this order are guilty of a misdemeanor and are subject to a fine of up to $200 in a Justice of the Peace Court.
