APRIL IS NATIONAL LAWN AND GARDEN MONTH
By Trey Collier April is National Lawn and Garden month! This gives you a wonderful reason to get outside and get your backyard and garden ready. Whether you are starting from scratch or are an experienced pro, here are several tips that you can use to celebrate Lawn and Garden month in style! Consider Backyard Composting - Composting is nature’s process of recycling decomposed organic materials into a rich soil known as compost. Backyard composting is an acceleration of the process that occurs in nature. It is recycling at its finest! Use kitchen waste (such as food or paper towels), lawn clippings and wood chips to provide rich and powerful soil for your garden and lawn. Anything that was once living will decompose, giving you endless options for composting. Composting is good for your plants and for you! Adding organic materials to the soil improves moisture retention. It provides a balanced, slow-release source of nutrients that helps the soil hold nutrients long enough for plants to use them. Healthier plants means a healthier you! It will also save you money because you will no longer have to buy fertilizer. Add a compost bin to your garden and start today! Add a fountain - Outdoor fountains offer an easy and affordable way to add style to your lawn or garden. The soothing sound of running water will help to create a tranquil and relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Transform your garden into your own personal paradise! Consider adding variety - If you are fond of flower gardening, venture into edible vegetables! You will be thrilled with the sense of accomplishment you feel when you feed your family fresh, healthy produce that you grew on your own. Beans, squash, cucumbers, lettuce/greens, tomatoes, peppers, beets and garlic are all great vegetables to start with. They are relatively easy to maintain and will offer beautiful variety. If you are already growing your own vegetables, consider planting an eye catching flower garden (try marigold, lupine, daisy or wildflower mix seeds). Fruits are also a great option. Apples, figs, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are great for beginners. Variety is the spice of life! Go high-tech - Modern technology impacts our daily life. Why not let it impact your backyard? There are several innovations in outdoor living that you will wonder how you ever lived without. The Robomower will make mowing your lawn virtually effortless. No more back-breaking work and labor intensive afternoons spent cutting grass. You simply install special sensors around the perimeter of your yard and push a button. It doesn’t get much easier than that! Another product worth trying is the Mosquito Eliminator. Gone are the days of tacky bug zappers and pesky insects at parties. It is so beautiful that your guests will never guess that it is fighting mosquitoes and

BACKYARD GARDEN CLUB
This informal gathering of individuals who like to garden or just appreciate lovely gardens is open to anyone in the Copperfield villages and surrounding area. This is not a competitive group for yard of the month etc., but more of a sharing of ideas, gardening tips and cuttings or plants. If you would like to share your knowledge or only need ideas for your backyard please feel free to join us. It will be a learning experience for all. We will meet the second Friday of the month at 1 PM at 17418 Emerald Isle Dr., Westcreek Village. The group would also like to select backyards to visit in our area with date and time confirmed. We would like to thank Bill & Kelly Frere, Ralph and Janet Gingell, Diane Burch and Bill Schindler for sharing their lovely backyards with us last season. If you would like to open your backyard for us to tour in the future or feel the need for more information, please e-mail Bill Schindler at wrspo@sbcglobal. net.

Success stories from our local HCSO Deputies: On Wednesday, March 2nd, Copperfield Deputies A. Vasquez and D. Sanchez were dispatched to a robbery of an individual in Easton Commons where a man was selling a pair of “Jordan” shoes to a pair of males when the males pulled a handgun and robbed the complainant of his shoes. A witness provided a license plate for the suspects’ vehicle and it was located at the Valero at Easton Commons and West road, where the two suspects were placed into custody. Both were charged with Aggravated Robbery with a Deadly Weapon. A stolen Glock pistol, which was the robbery weapon, was recovered at the scene.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through April. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Northmead Village (NM) GARAGE SALE
Mark your calendars now and save the date! The Northmead Village Spring Community Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 7 AM until 3 PM.
(NM) EGRETS AND NIGHT HERONS ARE BACK IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD
This is an absolute critical time period between the first birds being spotted in the area and the first egg being laid in a nest. This crunch time iswhen you have the only opportunity to scare the birds away and to disrupt the problem. Any home with mature trees is a potential nesting site for these birds. If you have not yet taken action to prevent nesting on your property, please do so now! Prevention is crucial because egrets, herons and other migratory birds are protected by international treaty, it’s illegal for residents to harass or harm the birds once they lay eggs.
• Visual deterrents - Hang aluminum pie plates, Mylar balloons, beach balls with shiny streamers or other moving objects in large trees. • Noisemakers - Pump-style air horns, whistles, clappers and even children’s toys are effective. Make as much noise as possible aimed at the bird. • Bright lights - High-intensity flashlights, strobe lights, flashing holiday lights can be effective. • Water sprayers - Power sprayers and pump-style toy water shooters can help. Homemade PVC pipe sprayers can help reach tall tree limbs. • Pool poles - Telescoping pool safety poles can be used to reach and remove early nesting material.
(NM) DEED RESTRICTIONS
While no one likes receiving a Deed Restriction notice, it’s a necessary evil to keep the neighbor in good repair, which protects everyone’s property values. If you receive a letter and have a question or need additional time to make a repair, please call Graham Management at 281-497-4320. We are here to help.
(NM) GARBAGE CANS
Preventing birds from building nests on residential property in the first place is key. When the birds first arrive in spring, they are somewhat nervous and more easily scared away. Putting visual deterrents in trees is recommended before nest building begins. You can also scare off birds with noisemakers, water sprayers and other non-lethal devices. Neighbors are advised to check their trees daily and remove the start of any nest. Once birds begin sitting on the nest, eggs are probably present and birds cannot be harassed.
GARBAGE CANS MUST BE STORED OUT OF SIGHT! It is a violation of deed restrictions to leave cans in view on non-garbage pick-up days. There is a fine assessed for each violation notice a resident receives. This is a growing problem in our neighborhood. Deed Restriction investigators are going to become more vigilant in citing the homes in violation. You are encouraged to report homes that are chronic violators to Graham Management. A link to contact Graham Management is also on the Copperfield website. You will remain anonymous. Your reports are appreciated.
Egret Prevention Tools This is a list of possible tools and tactics you can use to deter migratory birds from nesting on your property. Experts say a variety of deterrents works best. Just remember, do not harm birds or eggs. • Trim your trees - Remove deadwood. Thin tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other trees. Experts say this is the most effective step you can take.
Before making improvements or changes that may be effected by our Deed Restrictions, call Graham Management at 281-497-4320. They will advise you and provide the form you will need for approval of your renovation. Please do not put yourself in the unfortunate position of incurring unnecessary costs to rectify a change that was not approved.

(SC) PICKING UP AFTER YOUR PET
We have had a number of complaints recently over people not picking up after their pets. Here are reasons to do so: • It’s the law! • Stormwater carries pet waste and other pollutants directly into waterways. • Animal waste may contain harmful organisms such as Giardia, Salmonella and E. coli that can be transmitted to humans and other animals by ingesting contaminated water. • Roundworms and hookworms deposited by infected animals can live in the soil for long periods of time and be transmitted to other animals and humans. • Cleaning up after your pet is always the right thing to do. • No one likes to step in pet waste and spread it into homes, cars and businesses. • It’s easy to clean up by carrying plastic baggies and paper towels in your pocket. • Your neighbors will appreciate your good manners.

Southcreek trash pickup is on Tuesdays and Fridays. Southcreek has backdoor pickup. This means that our trashcans may be placed at the back of our driveway. We do not have to have our trashcans at the curb. Big items such as yard clippings and tree branches should be placed at the curb. Our deed restrictions state that all trash, including grass clippings, cannot be on the curb until 6 PM the night before pickup and your trashcans must be picked up from the curb by 6 PM, the day of pickup. So… you cannot have trash on the curb until Monday and Thursday nights until 6 PM and everything must be removed from the curb by 6 PM on Tuesdays and Fridays. This includes any bags that contain lawn clippings. If you have a lawn service, have them place the bags behind your fence and not leave the clippings on the curb. Our recycling day is Tuesday. Please have your recycling bin at the curb by 7 AM on Tuesdays. Please pick up your recycling by 6 PM on Tuesdays to comply with our deed restrictions.

The annual meeting will be held on May 4, 2016 in the Copeland Elementary School cafeteria. Please try to make this once a year meeting because your input about issues concerning Westcreek are truly valued. We are all volunteers who want to make our neighborhood a safe and attractive place to call home. If you would like to become a member of the Westcreek Crime Watch Committee or serve a block captain, please email Larry Berger at larry.berger@energytransfer.com for more details.
(WC) STAY INFORMED
To look at area crime, log onto www.crimereports.com. This is a good way to know what is happening in the area. Many times, friends and neighbors send out emails about incidents, which turn out to be false or the details are exaggerated. Crime Watch captains cannot send out emails unless the incident has been confirmed by the Sheriff’s Dept. Sometimes these incidents are under investigation and it is best not to send out mass emails about the suspects. Houston is one of the largest cities in the nation. Always be aware of your surroundings and if you see something suspicious, report it by calling the non-emergency Sheriff’s Department number 713-221-6000 #1. Remember to program this number into your cell phone.
(SD) TRASH DAY
Southdown Village has backdoor trash pick-up on Tuesday and Friday. Recycling is on Tuesday. Trash and recycling bins must be stored out of view until the evening before trash day. Failure to do so may result in a violation of deed restrictions.

Simply follow these instructions: 1) log onto Copperfield.org; 2) select Westcreek Village; 3) next select Westcreek Crime Watch website and finally 4) select forms - Vacation Watch. After downloading the form, mail or fax the form at least 5 days before the watch begins. Other forms available include the Deputy Request form to report traffic problems and park problems, etc. The Alarm System Permit Application and Homeowner’s Insurance Rate Reduction forms are also available for download. A few minutes of your time looking as this website provides lots of valuable information and is worth the effort.

(WC) CRIME PREVENTION TIP
Every month we report that valuables were taken from unlocked vehicles. This is a preventable crime. Please remember to lock your vehicles and more importantly, remove all items. These thieves will move to another area and will no longer roam the streets at night looking for easy targets - unlocked vehicles containing personal items such as cell phones, computer lap tops, cameras, guns, purses and wallets. The school year is almost over and area pools open for the weekends beginning in May. Be alert for suspicious activity in the neighborhood, especially around the pool and park areas. While at the pool, do not leave valuables in vulnerable locations - lying on tables, lounge chairs or visibly displayed in parked vehicles. Avoid taking money or credit cards. The theft of personal items can ruin a pleasant day spent at the park or pool.
WESTCREEK LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE
Meetings - 2nd Monday of every month at 6:30 PM Location - Forest Heights Pool Meeting Room The Westcreek Landscape Committee meets on the 2nd Monday every month. If you are interested in helping make a difference in our neighborhood and would like to become part of the group, we welcome and encourage your attendance and hope to see you there - there is room for you! Comments, suggestions or questions regarding common areas or other landscape topics are always welcome. Please contact Graham Management Inc. at 281-497-4320 - they will forward your message, request or information to the committee. A member will then get back with you to answer your questions or concerns. (WC) APRIL GARDENING TIPS
Spring is here - Yeah! Time for some COLOR! Given the very mild winter we just experienced, many of you may have some flowers and plants that survived the colder months. With a little pruning and TLC, you just may be able to get another years’ worth of enjoyment from them. If you have not already pruned and cut back any dead stock among your Hibiscus, Mandeville’s and crepe myrtle bushes, now is the critical time to do so to allow emergence of new growth. Remember to detect all branches that are dead by going back closer to the center or base of the plant until live, flexible branches can be found, otherwise new growth will find it very difficult to emerge. Many residents have begun to replace mulch in their bedding areas. Please keep in mind that if you have Live Oaks that hang over such areas, they may still be dropping old growth leaves or new growth blossoms. Replacing the mulch may be a futile attempt at beautification.

FIGHT WEEDS!!! Many lawns may be fighting extensive weed intrusion due to the ample amount of rainfall we experienced in January/February. Treating your lawn with slow release 3-1-2 ratio fertilizers are recommended under the following formulations:

Fire Ants have also been on the rise again due to the frequent rains we had earlier this year. Please be on the lookout and take care to not get attacked when sitting down and performing seeding/planting work. If you have any uneven areas in your lawn that require filling in, a 50-50 mixture of sand and topsoil raked into the lower areas will help fill such areas and still provide to growth to emerge. The sand will help offset the abundance of clay that we are all forced to work with here in Harris County. Sod replacement work can be started and is recommended now and through May, before the warmer days are upon us. Other major project work such as tree replacements or irrigation work should be completed before the end of May as warmer days will make such work more difficult if you are a do-ityourselfer.

Cypress Woods High School AFJROTC was chosen to Present the Colors and the Missing Man Table and Honors Ceremony. Tina Clinkenbeard, CFISD Teacher, sang the National Anthem. State Representative Allen Fletcher gave the invocation and Senior Ryan Lancaster, from Cy-Fair High School, played TAPS. Kevin “Dauber” Lacz, former Navy SEAL sniper and combat medic was our guest speaker for the evening. Lacz spoke from the heart about his experiences as a Navy SEAL and the impact his service in the military had on his life. As a Certified Physician Assistant, Lacz uses his past experiences to facilitate his work in medicine and charity and actively seeks to support service members and veterans in his community. Lacz inspired us all with his motivational story, winning attitude and continued commitment to service. Joe Myers Ford Lincoln generously underwrote this year’s Salute to Our Heroes Gala and we are grateful that they have agreed to underwrite this event in 2017. Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital and North Cypress Medical Center were Major General Sponsors this year. Salute to Our Heroes has raised more than half a million dollars over the past eight years, funding several endowed scholarships for students graduating from the Cypress Fairbanks ISD. CFEF was established in 1970 as a non-profit to raise money to fund a scholarship for high school graduates in the area. Over the past 46 years, the Foundation has grown tremendously through the efforts of the Board of Trustees and the generosity of the Cy-Fair Community. The Foundation has awarded more than $6 million in scholarships to 1,300 graduating seniors. CFEF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, all contributions are tax deductible, as allowed by the law. GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY
Our Girl Scout Cookie sale for 2016 concluded on March 20th. Hope you stocked up, as there will be a long wait before cookie time rolls around again! Many thanks to all our cookie volunteers and to all the troops who participated. We appreciate the support of our friends and neighbors. ! Money earned from the annual Cookie sale funds individual troop activities and supports Council programs and camps. Some of our troops really made their cookie booths special. Members of troop 113035 had a cookie booth on Valentine’s Day and report that they sold 200 boxes in 2 hours. These Girl Scouts really enjoy dressing up. They represented Vietnam at our World Thinking Day event and took part in our cafeteria-size Friendship Circle. The World Thinking Day event drew almost 200 girls (and their leaders). Each troop represented a different country and presented national costumes,

music, food and crafts at their booths. They also had some great swaps! Stick on mustaches, crepes and chocolate lollipops that were shaped like the Eiffel tower were featured at the “France” booth. Maracas made from plastic spoons and Easter eggs accompanied Fiesta costumes at the Mexico booth the special collars and headdresses seen at the Egypt booth looked as if they had come from the King Tut exhibit. Beautiful costumes, bright colors and lots of smiling faces made traveling “around the world” as easy as moving around the cafeteria! Our event started off with a flag ceremony and recitation of the Girl Scout Promise and finished up with a Friendship Circle and singing “Make New Friends.” We also collected donations for the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund. Our STRIDERS event brought an afternoon of track and field events, with families coming out to cheer on their daughters. Girls jumped rope, ran in individual and relay races, threw softballs and jumped in standing and running events. We also had a few snacks to keep up our strength for all those activities. Our spring Leader/Daughter event in Wimberley featured “Art in Bloom” crafts and activities, as well as the Talent Show, Dutch oven Cook-off and all our usual fun activities. Horseback riding and rock climbing, kayaking, shopping and eating the results of the Dutch Oven Cook-Off are all part of this exciting weekend.
Summer brings resident, day and twilight camps and the chance to learn new skills, have fun and make new friends. Some of our troops are also looking forward to the Girl Scout Night Sleepover at the Sugarland Skeeters stadium; they will be taking part in a parade around the stadium, enjoying the game and pitching their tents on the field afterwards! Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the elementary schools listed below, as well as the corresponding middle and high schools. Home schoolers and private school students are always welcome. Our elementary schools are: Birkes, Fiest, Hairgrove, Horne, Kirk, Lee, Lieder, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Tipps, Wilson, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Texas Christian School and Christian Life Center. BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.

THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 2016, 11 AM-4 PM
The Cy-Fair Express Network (CYFEN) will host the 8th Annual Cy-Fair Women’s EXPO at Sterling Country Club at Houston National. Besides giving vendors a place to showcase their products and services, the goal for our expo year is to get the community more involved and show the Cy-Fair area what ABWA and CYFEN is all about. One of the ways we are doing this is to have dynamic round table discussions focusing on health and wellness, communication, relationships and personal finance. Our Keynote speaker will be ACTION 13 CONSUMER Reporter Patricia Lopez who focuses on saving you money through her daily “Stretch Your Dollar” segments on ABC13. You can join Patricia’s presentation at 12 Noon. Vendor registration is now open. We only take 2 business types per category and NO two businesses can be exactly the same. We only have 50 vendor tables available so reserve your spot now! There are also a very limited number of sponsorship opportunities still available. OUTDOOR PROJECTS TO HELP YOU SPRING INTO SUMMER
Did you know there are many water-wise “Do It Yourself” projects that can help improve your outdoor space as the warmer months approach? From harvesting rainwater to building raingutter gardens to creating sustainable landscapes, you can be water efficient while beautifying your home. Harvesting rainwater using a rain barrel allows you to capture the run off from your home and reuse it for irrigation or other non-potable uses. Freshly collected rainwater can be a great way to water your landscape between rain events. For tips on building a rain barrel, please visit Agri-Life Extension http://agrilifeextension.tamu.edu/solutions/rainwater-harvesting/ or you may purchase one from your local home-improvement store. Repurposing or converting a piece of rain gutter into a “gutter garden” is an efficient use of a natural and “green” design idea that combines creativity, recycling and functionality. Gutter gardens can be used to grow flowers, succulents, vegetables, fruit and herbs and can be freestanding or attached to walls, railings and fences where they catch runoff from a good rain shower. Examples of creative rain-gutter gardens can be found at www.pinterest.com/explore/ gutter-garden/. Creating eco-friendly gardens is a great way to reduce your water usage. Using native plants provides vibrant colors with less maintenance. Watering your plants properly ensures that necessary nutrients are not washed away, which reduces runoff and promotes the health of your plants. Popular native plants for our area are: Black-eyed Susan, Texas Lantana and Autumn Sage. For a list of other native plants that may work well in your landscape, please visit the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center: www.wildflower.org/explore.php.Source submitted by North Fort Bend Water Authority.

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE
DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can no longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with local veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened, forever homes. DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally.
