(CWC) COPPERFIELD WOMEN’S CLUB WOMEN SERVING THE COMMUNITY
Due to a very exciting and successful year, the Copperfield Women’s Club will change its name to the Cy-Fair Women’s Club! Membership to our club is open to all ladies in the Northwest Houston neighborhoods. We look forward to sharing an adventurous new year with new members from the Copperfield area, as well as the entire Cy-Fair area. Our name change will take place as of January 1, 2012. If you are not familiar with our club, we are a service organization that gives back to the community. All funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community as well. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ at 7:00 PM for social time and refreshments, followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at Queenston and West Road. If there are any adventurous ladies out there, that love to have fun and would like to participate in giving back to the community, we encourage you to come join us! Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships. We look forward to meeting you! If you have any questions about our club or need directions to the church, please contact Susan McLeroy, Membership Chair at sudomac@comcast.net.

CRIME WATCH
iWatch iWatchHarrisCounty is a smartphone app that works with android, Blackberry and iPhones. It empowers citizens across the county to report suspicious behaviors or activities by turning in tips as text messages and emails with image and video attachments and phone calls directly to the HCSO from almost any mobile phone or PC. Citizens can remain anonymous or may choose to disclose their identity. Additional information is available at: http:// iwatchharriscounty.com. Your eYes are needed Copperfield has approximately 30,000 residents, and we are proud of our community, we take care of our property, participate in school, church and other social activities and enjoy living in the area. From time to time, however, we have some that won’t play by the rules or choose to put us and our families at risk. as residents, we should always be aware of our surroundings and be observant of behavior that could pose a threat to our families and property. We all need to be observant. In an effort to inform our residents about some of these concerns, we will be providing information on incidents that have occurred in Harris County. The bottom line is, we want to preserve our community and being pro-active can help reduce the possibility or limit this type of activity in our area. Our first topic will be grow houses. A grow house is a building that has been retrofitted to grow large quantities of marijuana, sometimes hundreds of plants. The following list of items may be cause for concern, individually they may not being something, but combined they often indicate a grow house. Grow houses typical signs • Usually a vacant or rented home (people would not do this to their own house) • Vehicles seldom seen or at odd times
Copperfield
• No decorations, no trash • Lack of visible light (these houses use high intensity grow lights, so they try to block the light from emitting, sometimes with dark taped covering on the windows) • Building material, such as bagged insulation being brought to residence • Smell of fresh marijuana lingers in the area If you notice these signs we encourage you to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 713-221-6000 #1 and report it. reMInder >>LocK Your hoMe and cars and Be sure no VaLuaBLes or VIsaBLe<< traffIc InItIatIVe WIth zero toLerance has Been InItIated for copperfIeLd As you are probably aware, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office patrols the neighborhood of Copperfield. With concerns for the safety of numerous children playing in the area, people jogging, the driver of motor vehicles in the area, as well as the fact it is a violation of the State of Texas Traffic/ Transportation Code, the following issues are of concern to residents of Copperfield, as well as that of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Department has initiated a traffic initiative for Copperfield with a zero tolerance policy 1. running of stop signs - Remember your vehicle must come to a COMPLETE STOP prior to proceeding from a stop sign. - If you are caught not coming to a complete stop, you will receive a traffic citation (ticket). 2. speeding - There are speed limit signs posted on all major roadways (Longenbaugh, Queenston Boulevard and West Rd.). The speed limit within the Villages of Copperfield is 30 mph unless otherwise posted. If you are caught traveling in excess of the posted speed limit, you will be subject to receiving a traffic citation (ticket). Please adhere to the posted speed limits. 3. roadside parking - Please remember that in parking along the side of the roadway (in areas where it is not posted “No Parking”), vehicles should be parked in the direction of the flow of traffic for the side of the roadway of which they are parking and vehicles should not be more than 18 inches from the curbside. In addition, vehicles should not be within: 15 feet of a fire hydrant, 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection or 30 feet from a stop sign. Let’s look out for one another. Stop at the stop signs. adhere to the posted speed limits and park with the flow of traffic. Please drive safely. Thank you!

Join us on Facebook Copperfield Crime Watch has launched the “Copperfield Safety and Security Facebook” page. You may reach the page by clicking on the Facebook graphic on the Copperfield website at: www.copperfield.org/watch.php. We encourage residents to “Like” the page to get regular updates and information to protect their possessions, property and family. In addition, we will be posting community safety and security events as they are scheduled. Since the Facebook page was launched we have over 440 people following the updates, tell your Copperfield friends to join us. RemindeR As a reminder, it is critical to be able to recognize something that is out of the ordinary. Although many residents don’t know all their neighbors, they usually know a few. They also become familiar with patterns of living, like when people leave for work, the cars normally seen in a driveway, etc. It is these patterns that become what we consider “normal.” Whenever we see something that is not normal, it should warrant our attention. It may be a vehicle parked in a driveway or street, it may be someone walking on the street from house to house or it may even look like someone who is working on a project. If someone knocks on your door, make certain you know who it is, before you open the door, it if sounds out of the ordinary call the Sheriff. if you in any way think something may be suspicious, call it in to the sheriff. The Crime Watch Committee also asks you to consider becoming involved in our crime Watch program. You may contact your village representative listed on the Copperfield website, in the Copperfield newsletter or visit one of our monthly committee meetings (dates listed on Crime Watch tab of Copperfield.org website). You may also visit the Copperfield Safety and Security Facebook page. In order to receive updates you may register at the Copperfield website at: http://www.copperfield.org/sl_register.php to stay informed and receive crime watch updates. Please continue to call in any and all suspicious activity you observe at any time, to the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number at 713-2216000 (Option 1 for dispatch). For life threatening emergencies call 911.

Please take a moment to read posted signs. Parents please remind your children that the playground is for small children and that they must also watch out for the children’s safety at the park. doGs / PeTs: We have had many complaints where homeowners walking their pets are allowing them to do their business on the sidewalk itself! This has to be stopped. When you walk you pet, please be considerate of others who use the sidewalks for walking or jogging. Pick up your pets business if it happens to be done on the sidewalk. No one likes to step on this!

Be sure to lock your cars when in the driveways and pay attention when leaving garage doors open for long periods. The officers have also suggested the need to back pickup trucks up to the garage so tailgates aren’t stolen which has been a recurring issue this year. As you are all aware of the current fire danger levels, please be extra vigilant in monitoring outdoor grilling with the nice fall weather hopefully coming soon. REMINDER: It is imperative that we try to get involved. Keep your ears and eyes open and report any suspicious activity by calling the non-emergency police telephone number, 713-221-6000. BE PREPARED - GET INVOLVED! CRIMES IN PROGRESS CALL 911 CRIMES REPORTED: Did you know that you are your worst enemy! 9 out of 10 times, you left your doors unlocked to your home or car. You did not arrange for your newspaper to be picked up or stopped when you left on vacation, which is a clear indication that you are not at home. All of the above are great invitations for thieves. You may go to the website and obtain a vacation form, if you are going on vacation and fax or drop it off at the Sheriff’s Department or community center. They will monitor your home while you are away.

Easton Commons Village (EC) EASTON COMMONS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING AND IMPENDING BOARD VACANCY The Easton Commons Homeowners Association will hold its Annual Meeting for all homeowners and residents on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at the Copperfield Community Center, 15409 Willow River. Sign-in for attendees will begin at 6:45 PM and the meeting will start at 7:00 PM. In addition to presenting the financial report and conducting other business, an election will be held to fill an impending vacancy on the Association Board of Directors. Any member of the Homeowners Association (homeowners and current residents) who is interested in serving on the board should call SCS Management Services at 281-463-1777.
(EC) DEED RESTRICTIONS
Every month, SCS Management rides through Easton Commons to check for Deed Restriction violations. The Deed Restrictions set the standards on how our property is taken care of. A well maintained community will impact the property value of your home, which is most likely the largest investment you have. If you have received a letter from SCS regarding a deed restriction violation, please take care of the violation as soon as possible. If you are having problems getting an issue resolved, please contact SCS Management to inform them and to schedule a timeline for the correction. If you ignore the letter, additional letters are sent out which can result in additional expenses, which will be added to your account. If you are not sure of the Deed Restrictions, you can access them on www. copperfield.org under Easton Commons.

There are still incidences of large commercial trucks parking along the street near the entrance to the subdivision and adjacent to the park. The entrance to a residential neighborhood is no place for such vehicles, which are a safety problem, as well as unsightly and may interfere with traffic. Signs are posted that indicate that the parking of these vehicles is prohibited. When a truck parks in the restricted area, residents are encouraged to call the Harris County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number (713-221-6000) to make a report.
(EC) PROBLEMS WITH OBSTRUCTED LINE OF SIGHT
Residents are reminded that Easton Commons Deed Restrictions do place limits on the size and placement of fences, planters, hedges and other items, which may restrict vision, particularly on corner lots. Basically, the deed restrictions prohibit placing any object on a corner which is over two feet high and which may interfere with line of sight. There are still many cars that cut through our subdivision to avoid traffic and lights on Highway 6 and West Road. Many of these do not comply with the 20 mile-an-hour speed limit which further aggravates an already dangerous situation arising from restricted line of sight. Residents who persist in violating this item of the deed restrictions are subject to warning/reminder letters and may be subject to further action if the situation is not corrected.

(SD) HELPFUL CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
As we enter the Holiday season, be conscious of any suspicious behavior in the neighborhood. Also remember that the safest neighborhoods are those that actively work with the police on crime prevention. Please review the tips below and do what you can to keep Southdown safe: • Burglars are less likely to try to enter a residence when someone appears to be home. Leave the lights on or use timers. • If you have a storm door, please lock it. Remember, the more noise a burglar has to create, the more of a deterrent it is. • Lock your windows. • Trim back bushes from in front or back of your home so that there are fewer areas where someone can hide from sight. • If you are home during the day, watch out for suspicious people around your neighbor’s homes. A suspicious person is someone you do not recognize as living in the area. • Get to know your neighbors. Provide one with your immediate contact information. • If you are going out of town, be sure to tell a neighbor so they can watch for any suspicious activity while you are gone. • If you hear glass breaking, a vehicle alarm going off or any other suspicious noises, activity, vehicles or individuals, immediately report it to the police department. Most arrests are due to alert residents who call in and relay this type of information to the police. The Sheriff’s non-emergency number is 713-221-6000; use option 1 for dispatch. • If you have an alarm system, use it! • Make sure your personal property inventory is up to date, record serial numbers, make and model of items and keep this record in a secure place. • Install motion lights. • Keep garage doors closed and locked. • Lock your car and leave it in your driveway, not on the street. Remove all valuables from sight.
12
• If you believe you have witnessed a crime, call 911. • If you would like to be informed of issues related to crime in Southdown Village, please send an email to the Southdown Crime Committee Chairperson, DeBra Edwards (ddedwards57@att.net). Residents are also encouraged to register their email at www.copperfield.org for crime watch updates.
(SD) STREETLIGHTS
Please be aware that Copperfield pays a flat fee to Centerpoint Energy for our streetlights, no matter the condition of the lights. It is important to report any non-working streetlights, as Centerpoint will not charge us to fix them. These reports will help our neighborhood remain an attractive place to live. Please report non-working lights to Centerpoint at 713-207-2222. Include the pole ID number when you call.
(SD) VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Various committees overseeing different aspects of our community meet periodically. Please think of volunteering your time to make your community a better place. Volunteer opportunities are available with most committees, including the Pool and Parks, Architectural Review, Deed Restrictions and Crime Watch committees.
(SD) FYI

CFISD VIPS FALL CONFERENCE
It was barely 8:00 AM in the morning on Friday, Oct. 14th. They were beginning to arrive. Upon checking in; name badges were handed out along with a bright red folder full of the day’s agenda and the conference material. There was even an eco-friendly tote bag full of coupons and goodies generously donated by local area businesses. The room was huge and full of tables decorated with bright paper blocks spelling out the main part of this year’s theme, “Teamwork.” This was the annual VIPS Fall Conference held by the CFISD VIPS Executive Board at the Berry Center in Cypress. The schedule was full. It consisted of everything from learning how to turn a popsicle stick into a fun treat for a teacher or volunteer to tips on helping our students handle stress. The attendees could choose from a variety of 50 minute sessions that covered topics such as: Internet Safety; Reaching Out to Diverse Volunteers; Guidelines and Best Practices for Fundraising; and even Taking Care of Your Personal Health While Maintaining a Busy Lifestyle. Something was most impressive about this conference to one volunteer. This audience of 200 plus was comprised of men and women, volunteers and school staff - not limited to Cy-Fair ISD. There were 4 other area districts represented at this conference: Alief ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Houston ISD and Spring ISD. The current budget environment has left our school districts vying to be first in line for every resource of financial and physical support they can find. But for one day in October, the district boundary lines came

down. There was no competition. There was no hidden agenda. Despite the traffic and everyday challenges, educators and volunteers from schools all over our county came together for a common purpose: improving their volunteer program thereby affecting the students in a positive way. This was simply an opportunity to attend an event that focused on several different areas of how to build on their volunteer resources in order to enhance the children’s education. While that volunteer sat looking out over the diverse crowd; she couldn’t help but see a universal theme, “Yes, in this room, it’s truly all about the students.”
LARGEST RECOGNIZED DISTRICT IN TEXAS - ONCE AGAIN
For the fourth consecutive year, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the largest Recognized school district in Texas. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) confirmed that an appeal was granted and CFISD’s accountability rating was changed to Recognized. The increase in rating came as a result of an appeal to recalculate the TAKS science passing percentage for Dean Middle School. The decision changed the campus’ accountability rating to Academically Acceptable.
STAAR TEST TO REPLACE TAKS TEST
STAAR, State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, has replaced TAKS. As the Texas Education Agency distributes information to the district about this new assessment program, we will post on the website at www. cfisd.net. TEA may not finalize all information until the beginning of the spring semester, so we encourage you to revisit the website throughout the school year. Be assured, we will post information as soon as it is available to the district. You can access information in several ways: 1. STAAR information will be posted on each campus’ web page. 2. STAAR is accessible from Quick Links on the homepage of the district website.

LANGHAM CREEK CHEERLEADERS
The annual Langham Creek Cheerleader Cheer Clinic held on October 15th was a huge success! Approximately 100 participants came to enjoy learning about the cheerleading talents our girls display everyday and to meet and get a picture with, our outstanding Lobo mascot. The parents enjoyed the “show off” at the end of the clinic, as well as, seeing the kids perform on the sidelines with the Lobo cheerleaders at the JV game on October 19th! Thank you to everyone who came to the clinic - it really is a fun event for all. The Lobo cheerleaders had some great “nature” time on Friday, November 4th, with family and friends at their annual hayride. On a beautiful, crisp night, they roasted hot dogs and made smores over campfires, played guitar and sang and just enjoyed each others company away from the lights and complications of the city. A well deserved respite for our hard working girls! On November 7th, the cheerleaders kicked off basketball season by decorating the locker room with signs, streamers and balloons! Way to pump up our players for an exciting Lobo basketball season! Go Lobos!

COVENANT LUTHERAN CHURCH “BLUE CHRISTMAS”WORSHIP SERVICE
Christmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved family member who has recently died; it may trigger some other sadness; it may be a time that has always been difficult. The constant refrain on the radio and television, in shopping malls and churches about the happiness of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation - all these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. We need the space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern; we need to know that we are not alone. Our spirits sink, as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us. For these reasons, Covenant Lutheran Church, 3785 Barker Cypress Rd, Houston offers a special “Blue Christmas” (also known as “Longest Night”) service on December 21st at 7:00 PM. Come out and join in sharing and hearing prayers, scripture and music that acknowledge that God’s presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle - and that God’s Word comes to shine light into our darkness. Everyone, regardless of church background (or lack of it) is welcome. The short service will be followed by a brief time for light refreshments and fellowship for those who care to linger.

Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

Parenting Groups LA LECHE LEAGUE BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP
La Leche League is an international nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is a simple and natural process, but you may need support and information on the correct positioning of the baby at the breast, working and breastfeeding, avoiding problems and overcoming any difficulties that may occur. Knowing other women who have breastfed their babies can be helpful and reassuring. Having accurate, upto-date information is also important. Attending La Leche League meetings can help you learn about breastfeeding from other nursing mothers. At these monthly meetings, mothers share not only their questions and concerns but also the benefits and joys of breastfeeding. Being in touch with La Leche League can give you the network of support you need. There are numerous meeting locations all over the Houston area. The CyFair group meets on the second Tuesday of the month, at 10:00 AM, in the Berkshire Community Meeting Room, 15607 Berkshire Manor Ln. Babies are welcome! The Group offers an extensive lending library of books, free information and materials for sale.
