FEBRUARY GARDENING TIPS
February brings us into our coldest times as we are still in mid-winter or at least what we call winter for our area. Continue to be prepared to cover any tropicals or temperature-sensitive plants as we potentially will see some evenings that will hover at or below freezing. March will usually bring warmer nights, so be diligent for one more month and protect your plants! February is when pruning should begin to take place for hardwood trees, roses and crape myrtles. Following the best approach to cutting and balance will provide the best results: • Identify any limbs that might be a hazard to someone underneath it or to a building or structure nearby. Broken branches, weak branches, narrow growth angles and other “odd” growth faults should be identified. Any dead or dying growth should be removed, as well as any limbs that cross over or rub against each other, as these cause disease/damage to the tree/bush, as well as prevent light to filter down into the lower limb areas. Removing such growth will also encourage fruit production in fruit trees and promote ripening during production seasons. • Follow the three-cut method on all large limbs. If a single cut is made the weight of the limb will pull the limb down and damage trunk or adjacent limb areas before the cut has been completed, which will injure the tree and cause unsightly wounds • Make sure any cuts are done above the flush level with the trunk or adjoining limb. Do not make any stub cuts. • Be sure to not remove lower branches on newly planted trees. Wait until the tree has matured for 2-4 years before lower limbs are removed. • Crape Myrtles should be pruned back or at the very least, remove dead seed pods, otherwise new blooms will struggle to become established. Keep in mind that crape myrtles produce blooms from “new wood” or new branch growth, so some pruning is required annually to achieve flowering. • You may choose to select a certain height and then cut all upward limbs to not exceed that height or you may prefer to allow the tree to maintain a natural height and shape, which is somewhat more challenging to do. either method is acceptable, but realize that allowing for a natural shape will likely allow for more blooms to occur. • Remove all “suckers,” or shoots of new growth from the base of the plant now, as well as during the warmer growth season. Suckers draw nutrients away from other plant areas and cause unsightly growth that will create an odd, unstable shape for the tree/bush.

Fundraisers BERYL RAMSEY AND WAYNE VOSS TO CHAIR GO RED FOR WOMEN LUNCHEON SET FOR FEBRUARY 13, 2012
CEO of Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, Beryl Ramsey, returns to Chair the Go Red For Women Luncheon in partnership with CEO of Methodist West Houston Hospital, Wayne Voss. Together, Ramsey and Voss will serve as Co-Chairs and lead efforts to raise awareness that heart disease remains the number one killer of women, but is often preventable with healthy lifestyle choices.
This year’s luncheon will be held on Monday, Feb. 13th at the Berry Center in Cy-Fair and is expected to draw more than 400 business and community leaders. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn tips on heart disease and stroke prevention from local experts, listen to a heart-warming story of survival from an area resident, participate in interactive breakout displays and shop the “purse-onalities” silent auction. The silent auction is a unique piece of the luncheon that features items representative of the diverse personalities of the community. Purses can be anything from actual handbags to golf bags to briefcases. This year’s auction will include something for everyone! Melissa Wilson of Fox 26 Morning News will emcee the event and Dr. Valentina Ugolini of Willowbrook Cardiovascular Associates will be the featured medical speaker. Ramsey and Voss and their team of volunteers have a goal of raising a record-breaking $200,000 to support educational programs that the American Heart Association provides and the life-saving research it funds to reduce the effects of heart disease in women. Today, only 1 in 5 women believe that heart disease is their greatest health threat. More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next three

LA-FUNDACION.NET
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that about 220 million tons of old computers and other technology hardware are trashed in the U.S. every year. At the same time, 43% of US households do not have a computer at home. This huge disparity is commonly referred to as the Digital Divide. La-fundacion.net in partnership with community organizations throughout Texas, is trying to bridge the gap by placing donated computers in the hands of those who do not have access to technology. La-fundacion.net collects donated computers that once refurbished, upgraded and loaded with legal copies of Windows are provided to organizations like The Women’s Home of Houston, churches, community centers or directly to Public School Children who do not have a home computer in partnership with Public Schools such as Houston’s Hamilton Middle School.
