This year our holiday party promises to bring adventure to our lives! We are celebrating at Tapas Capriccio, where the expected, is the unexpected. We are looking forward to sharing this exciting adventure together! Remember, CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community, so all funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community, as well. Membership in the CWC is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ at 7:00 PM for social time and refreshments, followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at Queenston and West Road. If there are any adventurous ladies out there, that love to have fun and would like to participate in giving back to the community, we encourage you to come join us! Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships. We look forward to meeting you! If you have any questions about our club or need directions to the church, please contact Susan McLeroy, Membership Chair at sudomac@comcast.net.
CRIME WATCH
iWatch iWatchHarrisCounty is a smartphone app that works with Android, Blackberry and iPhones. It empowers citizens across the county to report suspicious behaviors or activities by turning in tips as text messages and emails with image and video attachments and phone calls directly to the HCSO from almost any mobile phone or PC. Citizens can remain anonymous or may choose to disclose their identity. Additional information is available at: http:// iwatchharriscounty.com/. Traffic initiative with zero tolerance has been initiated for Copperfield As you are probably aware, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office patrols the neighborhood of Copperfield. With concerns for the safety of numerous children playing in the area, people jogging, the driver of motor vehicles in the area, as well as the fact it is a violation of the State of Texas Traffic/ Transportation Code, the following issues are of concern to residents of Copperfield, as well as that of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
3
The Sheriff’s Department has initiated a traffic initiative for Copperfield with a zero tolerance policy 1. Running of Stop Signs - Remember your vehicle must come to a COMPLETE STOP prior to proceeding from a stop sign. - If you are caught not coming to a complete stop, you will receive a traffic citation (ticket). 2. Speeding - There are speed limit signs posted on all major roadways (Longenbaugh, Queenston Boulevard and West Rd.). The speed limit within the villages of Copperfield is 30 mph unless otherwise posted. - If you are caught traveling in excess of the posted speed limit, you will be subject to receiving a traffic citation (ticket). Please adhere to the posted speed limits. 3. Roadside Parking - Please remember that in parking along the side of the roadway (in areas where it is not posted “No Parking”), vehicles should be parked in the direction of the flow of traffic for the side of the roadway of which they are parking and vehicles should not be more than 18 inches from the curbside. In addition, vehicles should not be within: 15 feet of a fire hydrant, 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection or 30 feet from a stop sign. Let’s look out for one another. Stop at the stop signs. Adhere to the posted speed limits and park with the flow of traffic. Please drive safely. Thank you! Illegal dumping presentation Immediately following the monthly crime watch meeting (Nov. 9, 2011 at 6:30 PM at the Copperfield Community Center) there will be a presentation by Slvia Brumlow the Community Liaison for Environmental Investigation unit of HPD and Harris County. The discussion will include slides of illegal residential and commercial dumping, consequences and how to report dumping. Join us on Facebook Copperfield Crime Watch has launched the “Copperfield Safety and Security Facebook” page. You may reach the page by clicking on the Facebook graphic on the Copperfield website at: www.copperfield.org/watch.php. We encourage residents to “Like” the page to get regular updates and information to protect their possessions, property and family. In addition, we will be posting community safety and security events as they are scheduled. Since the Facebook page was launched we have over 375 people following the updates, tell your Copperfield friends to join us.

Although many residents don’t know all their neighbors, they usually know a few. They also become familiar with patterns of living, like when people leave for work, the cars normally seen in a driveway, etc. It is these patterns that become what we consider “normal.” Whenever we see something that is not normal, it should warrant our attention. It may be a vehicle parked in a driveway or street, it may be someone walking on the street from house to house or it may even look like someone who is working on a project. If anything looks suspicious, call the Sheriff. If someone knocks on your door, make certain you know who it is before you open the door, it if sounds out of the ordinary, call the Sheriff. Copperfield Place Village (CPV) A WORD FROM THE BOARD
We remind you to review your deed restrictions and if at any time you would like clarification, you may contact SCS management or attend the next Board meeting. Check the Copperfield website for time and date for our next November meeting.
(CPV) POOL & PARKS COMMITTEE
Please take a moment to read posted signs. Parents please remind your children that the playground is for small children and that they must also watch out for the children’s safety at the park. DOGS / PETS: We have had many complaints where homeowners walking their pets are allowing them to do their business on the sidewalk itself! This has to be stopped. When you walk you pet, please be considerate of others who use the sidewalks for walking or jogging. Pick up your pets business if it happens to be done on the sidewalk. No one likes to step on this!
(CPV) NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME WATCH
CRIME WATCH COMMITTEE Linsey Pilkinton, Crime Watch Committee Chairman is still urging for the assistance and volunteers of Block Captains. If you are interested in becoming a Block Captain, you may contact SCS Management for further details at 281-463-1777. Report from Crime Watch Committee Chairman, Lindsey Pilkinton: When you observe someone that doesn’t seem to be in the right place, call the Sheriff’s Office at 713-221-2000. The officers will be able to check out

the situation and make sure the person has a legitimate purpose for being there. This will help cut down on burglaries and other incidents in the area. Be sure to lock your cars when in the driveways and pay attention when leaving garage doors open for long periods. The officers have also suggested the need to back pickup trucks up to the garage so tailgates aren’t stolen which has been a recurring issue this year. As you are all aware of the current fire danger levels, please be extra vigilant in monitoring outdoor grilling with the nice fall weather hopefully coming soon. REMINDER: It is imperative that we try to get involved. Keep your ears and eyes open and report any suspicious activity by calling the non-emergency police telephone number, 713-221-6000. BE PREPARED - GET INVOLVED! CRIMES IN PROGRESS CALL 911 CRIMES REPORTED: Did you know that you are your worst enemy! 9 out of 10 times, you left your doors unlocked to your home or car. You don’t have enough lighting or no lights on your front or back porch. Your garage doors were left open in full view of all your goods stored in the garage. You did not arrange for your newspaper to be picked up or stopped when you left on vacation, which is a clear indication that you are not at home. All of the above are great invitations for thieves. You may go to the website and obtain a vacation form, if you are going on vacation and fax or drop it off at the Sheriff’s Department or community center. They will monitor your home while you are away.

Easton Commons residents participate in “National Night Out.”
(EC) National Night Out
Easton Commons held a community Night Out at the pavilion by the pool on October 4, 2011. This was the designated National Night Out and was well attended by residents of Easton Commons. The event was organized by Ken Johnson, Chairman of the Easton Commons Crime Watch Committee. Residents had the chance to meet each other and talk about security concerns. Ken introduced the Homeowners Association Board Members and Sergeant Breaux and three deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Department. The deputies spoke on local crime events and preventive measures residents can take.

Annual Meeting and Impending Board Vacancy The Easton Commons Homeowners Association will hold its Annual Meeting for all homeowners and residents on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at the Copperfield Community Center, 15409 Willow River. Sign-in for attendees will begin at 6:45 PM and the meeting will start at 7:00 PM. In addition to presenting the financial report and conducting other business, an election will be held to fill an impending vacancy on the Association Board of Directors. Any member of the Homeowners Association (homeowners and current residents) who is interested in serving on the board should call SCS Management Services at 281-463-1777.
(EC) DEED RESTRICTIONS
Every month, SCS Management rides through Easton Commons to check for Deed Restriction violations. The Deed Restrictions set the standards on how our property is taken care of. A well maintained community will impact the property value of your home, which is most likely the largest investment you have. If you have received a letter from SCS regarding a deed restriction violation, please take care of the violation as soon as possible. If you are having problems getting an issue resolved, please contact SCS Management to inform them and to schedule a timeline for the correction. If you ignore the letter, additional letters are sent out which can result in additional expenses, which will be added to your account. If you are not sure of the Deed Restrictions, you can access them on www. copperfield.org under Easton Commons.

When a truck parks in the restricted area, residents are encouraged to call the Harris County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number (713-221-6000) to make a report.
(EC) Problems with Obstructed Line of Sight
Residents are reminded that Easton Commons Deed Restrictions do place limits on the size and placement of fences, planters, hedges and other items, which may restrict vision, particularly on corner lots. Basically, the deed restrictions prohibit placing any object on a corner which is over two feet high and which may interfere with line of sight. There are still many cars that cut through our subdivision to avoid traffic and lights on Highway 6 and West Road. Many of these do not comply with the 20 mile-an-hour speed limit which further aggravates an already dangerous situation arising from restricted line of sight. Residents who persist in violating this item of the deed restrictions are subject to warning/reminder letters and may be subject to further action if the situation is not corrected.

Middlegate Village (MG) Breakfast with Santa
Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa Clause is coming to Middlegate Village, on Saturday, December 17th, from 9 am - 11 am. We will have face painters, food, and fun, and of course, a photo opportunity for your children with Mr. and Mrs. Clause. Come join us at the park on the corner of Pinyon Creek and Plum Lake Drive. If you are interested in volunteering or need more information please email hoa@middlegatevillage.org.
(MG) Crime Awareness
A member of the Sheriff’s Department as asked us to reiterate the fact that most of the crime in our neighborhood is “crime of opportunity,” specifically stealing from unlocked cars in driveways or on the street. If you park your car in your driveway or in the street in front of your house, please make sure it is locked and keep anything of valuable out of sight. And please, if you do have anything stolen report it as soon as possible. If your item is located, it could be just the thing that helps connect the perpetrator of that crime to other crimes. If you see any suspicious activity in your area, the Sheriff’s Dept. really wants to hear about it. If you see something that just doesn’t seem right, call it in. Whether its an unfamiliar vehicle parked in the street, someone you don’t recognize loitering or a person going door to door for no apparent reason, it should warrant a call to the Sheriff. Your information of license plate numbers, vehicle descriptions etc. could help solve crime in the neighborhood. The Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number is 713-221-6000. To report lifethreatening emergencies, call 911.
(MG) Deed Restriction Violation LETTERS
If you receive a deed restriction violation letter, please contact SCS Management to resolve the issue. Please do this in order to reduce attorney fees for the Association. If you are having problems getting an issue resolved, please inform the board by email: hoa@middlegatevillage.org.

(SC) Rock the Park –11/11/11
Mark your calendars and come join your neighbors for an evening of free music, fun and fellowship in our first ever Rock The Park concert series. The band, The Rock Agents will be playing on November 11, 2011 at the Park Falls Park from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. This is a great way to have fun and meet your Southcreek neighbors. Watch the website for more details. Contact Dennis Zehler if you would like to help at 832-282-9829.
(NM) Lost and Found Pets
Losing a pet is a devastating experience. This is a reminder that if you lose or find a pet, Copperfield.org has a pet reunification service. It’s very effective and reaches more people than posting signs about lost or found pets. Pets can wander very far from their home; farther than your sign can cover. Often, people check pet reunification sites from other neighborhoods.

Our deed restrictions require us to maintain our yards. We are required to do the following: • Keep flowerbeds weeded • Trim trees and shrubs • Mow lawn weekly in the growing season • Edge all sidewalks and driveway areas • Keep all bushes trimmed • Remove dead plantings, bushes and trees from the yard immediately.
In Southcreek, our trash is picked up on Tuesdays and Fridays. Our deed restrictions state that all trash, including grass clippings cannot be on the curb until 6 pm the night before pickup and your trash cans must be picked up from the curb by 6 pm the day of pickup. So… you cannot have trash on the curb until Monday and Thursday nights until 6 pm and everything must be removed from the curb by 6 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. Southcreek has backdoor pickup. Please utilize this service.

(SD) Please keep the following neighborhood points in mind
• Backdoor trash pick-up for household items on Monday and Thursday (heavy items) mornings. Grass clippings and yard waste must be placed at the curb. Please do not place your grass clipping at the curb before the night preceding pickup. It changes the perception of our neighborhood and is a common complaint of your neighbors. • Recycling pick up is on Thursday mornings. The recycling program was significantly expanded in 2010. We encourage you to reference the new guidelines at www.copperfield.org/southdown_village.php. Look for the Recycling Information section on the page. • Southdown Board meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the Copperfield Community Center. Contact our management company to be placed on the agenda. • Various committees overseeing different aspects of our community meet periodically. Please think of volunteering your time to make your community a better place. Volunteer opportunities are available with most committees, including the Pool and Parks, Architectural Review, Deed Restrictions and Crime Watch committees. If you see areas of the community and/or pool that need attention, please tell us. We all want Southdown to look its best. Graham Management can be contacted at 281-497-4320 or at www.grahammanagementhouston.com. Forms and guidelines can be found on the Copperfield.org website. Once again, we want to thank the many residents of Copperfield Southdown who take pride and care in their yard and actively work towards building a better in the overall upkeep of our neighborhood.

(WC) Yard of the Month
The Yard of the Month program has concluded for 2011 and will resume again in April of next year. Take advantage of the cooler months ahead to do some of the labor-intense tasks during cooler temperatures and hit the ground running when the program resumes!
(WC) NOVEMBER GARDENING TIPS LAWN/GARDEN CARE
Finally we have cooler weather upon us to enjoy the cool evenings and mornings we have missed all summer long, and we are a little less dry than we were 2-3 months ago. However, the effects of this year’s drought are still upon us. Insect and fungus damage should still be part of your main considerations as we are moving out of the intense heat and into cooler times. • Insect Control - chinch bugs can still be working to destroy our lawns if we haven’t fully eliminated their presence. Continue to monitor and treat any areas you may suspect chinch bugs may be present. Ortho “Max” or Spectricide “Triazicide” are both good liquid products to utilize. • Fungus Control - November is when Brownpatch fungus will really start to take its toll if we fail to treat our lawns properly and scale back on the amount of water applied. Remember, when evening temperatures fall below 60 degrees, this problematic fungus will likely re-appear where you have had it before. The best strategy for limiting and controlling Brownpatch; • Change your watering schedule by eliminating any evening watering sessions. Leaving the lawn wet in the evening is an open invitation for Brownpatch to appear. • Alter your fertilizer in use to limit the amount of nitrogen to only a “slowrelease” combination. • For treatment, Fertilome liquid systemic, Daconil or a double dose or Terrachlor should help stop any apparent signs from growing or increasing. • Don’t wait until the famous “rings of death” appear - treat before you see the telltale signs and avoid the breakout altogether. It is much easier to prevent Brownpatch than it is to control/eliminate it. • Trees - Do not forget to continue to deep water trees at least as long as overnight temperatures stay above 70 degrees. Magnolias (if you still have one) were especially battered this summer and need to be nursed during the fall season also - just because it is cooler doesn’t mean they do not require attention.
14
• Fall is for Planting - with the cooler months and the chance for new trees and shrubs to become better established before warmer weather is back, now is the time to consider planting new trees or ornamentals. Many of us may have the need to replace anything that may have been lost during the summer drought or just may wish to add to the beauty of our yards. • Be sure you enrich the soil with appropriate tree/shrub soil. Be sure you do not use in-ground developed soils for containerized ornamentals. Introducing excessive amounts of fresh hardwood mulch or manure-based material can burn root systems and kill the plant before it can get established. • If you moved any seasonal Poinsettias outdoors last winter with the hopes of being able to enjoy them again this holiday season now is the time to move the plants into a container and move indoors, providing at least 14 hours of ABSOLUTE DARKNESS daily for at least 6-8 weeks. You will still need to provide 4-6 hours of sunlight daily, but without the darkness treatment the plant will not develop blooms. Please - enjoy your Thanksgiving Holiday - travel safe, be thankful, watch plenty of football and get ready for December holiday festivities!

Super Heroes at Cypress Christian School
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman! Actually, it’s super men and women serving our community and nation who recently visited with Cypress Christian School elementary students. Staff Sergeant Jonathan Bolding, U.S. Army Special Forces, visited the second graders and answered their questions about his job as a communications specialist, about parachuting out of an airplane and about his deployment experience. A few days later, kindergarten students enjoyed a “show and tell” visit from Houston police officers who brought a police dog, motorcycle, patrol car, horses and as a very special treat, provided a police helicopter “fly by.” It was an exciting week on the CCS campus as students learned more about those who serve us so faithfully and met some of the “super heroes” that they pray for throughout the year.
Houston Christian Students Trek the Silk Road across China
A group of seventeen Houston Christian High School (HC) students traveled 2,000 miles to China to follow the Silk Road west, visiting breathtaking landmarks. Students saw the urban giant Beijing and then trekked both eastern and western ends of the Great Wall of China. Navigating the length of the country, students learned about China’s history and culture and how it varies along the Silk Road. On the western end of China, students took a camel caravan across portions of the Gobi Desert - the fifth largest desert in the world, with sand dunes over 1,000 feet high! The trip was led by the Head of School, Dr. Steve Livingston, and is part of HC’s unique Globe Trek program designed to give students an opportunity to directly learn about other countries and cultures.

CFISD Receives State Comptroller 2011 Texas Honors Circle Award
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is one of only 46 recipients, among 1,237 public school districts and charter schools statewide, to receive a five-star rating for academic and financial performance from Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller. The Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST) assigned every school district in the state a rating from one to five stars, indicating success in combining costeffective spending with achievement of measurable student academic progress. A five-star rating reflects the strongest relative academic progress combined with the lowest relative spending. CFISD was one of 23 five-star districts to retain its designation for the second consecutive year. The Comptroller’s office ranked CFISD in the 91st percentile of composite progress, which, combined with a spending index of “Very Low,” amounted to the five-star rating. Recently, the Texas Education Agency released data that ranked CFISD’s administrative cost ratio as the lowest among Houston-area school districts. Administrative costs in the area range from the highest cost ratio (9.12 percent) in North Forest ISD to the lowest (3.67 percent) in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. Ratios are calculated comparing administrative to instructional-related costs. More comparative information is located on the district website. In addition to the district’s recognition for operational efficiency and effectiveness, 33 CFISD schools also received the Texas Comptroller’s 2011 Texas Honors Circle Award for strong academic performance while spending relatively little compared to their peers statewide. Only 313 school campuses statewide received this distinction for high rankings received in the 2011 Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST), meaning CFISD accounted for 10.5 percent of all Honors Circle campuses in the state. Elementary campuses receiving the award achieved a five-star FAST rating, while middle and high school campuses tapped for the honor achieved at least a 4.5-star FAST rating. The following CFISD schools were recognized in the Texas Honors Circle:

Holmsley Elementary needs help to collect Box Tops this year
It is the beginning of a new school year and that means it is time to start saving those Box Tops! Collecting Box Tops for Education is a fun and easy way to help Holmsley Elementary. Box Tops coupons can be found on hundreds of family products and brands like Cheerios, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Ziploc, Kleenex, Juicy Juice and more. Each coupon is worth ten cents to Holmsley Elementary and its students.
Holmsley Elementary School
One dime may not seem like much, but it adds up to real change. For example, if each student at Holmsley brings in just 10 Box Tops this year, Holmsley Elementary will earn $986! That could help purchase PE/Sports equipment, art supplies, music supplies and library books.
HOLMSLEY SAYS A SAD FAREWELL TO PRINCIPAL COLE
Last year, the students and community helped Holmsley Elementary collect $2100 for the 2010-2011 school year. Our goal this school year is $2,500.
The members of the Holmsley PTO would like to extend their gratitude to Christina Cole, principal of Holmsley Elementary. Mrs. Cole has served as the principal for six years and has been an encourager and advocate for the children as well as a respected leader for the teachers and staff. She has gone above and beyond the duties of her job to meet the needs of the children and families of Holmsley Elementary. Mrs. Cole will be leaving Holmsley to serve as Director of Human Resources for Professional Staffing and Employee Relations for the Cy-Fair School District. In a letter sent home with the students, Mrs. Cole stated that she is honored to have been selected for this position and that she has been blessed to work with amazing educators who care deeply for their students, with parents who support their children’s education, and with students who have great talent and potential.
You can help us reach this goal by keeping your eye out for Box Tops on your products. When you clip the coupon from the package, you can give it to your student or the student down the street. You can even bring them into the Holmsley Elementary school office if you do not have a student in your vicinity. We need your support. It is such an easy way to help your local school, one dime at a time!
Thank you, Christina Cole, for your years of dedication and your heartfelt love for the children of Holmsley Elementary.

CYPRESS FALLS HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR NEWS
October winds blew a flurry of activity for our young men and women. Beginning with our women’s PJ Party on the 7th. They decorated (and ate) sugar cookies, created perfect nails, made friendship bracelets and ate pizza!!! Makeover’s provided by Natasha Manly were stunning! The women got to know each other better and their beauty radiated inside and out. The annual Fall Concert was fabulous and well attended on the 11th. The student’s voices filled the air with a joyous noise and helped to officially ring in our autumn notes. Our Italian themed dinner theatre was a delight! Grazie Mandola’s for the fabulous Italian fare! While feasting, the silent auction was fun as well as helpful for raising funds for our many upcoming events. Our Men and Women wowed the audience with song as well as Labay and Truitt Middle Schools. We thank our many contributors for our auction items: students,

PACK 445 OUT OF FIEST ELEMENTARY
Hello Everyone! Welcome to this month’s exciting episode of “The Chronicles of Pack 445!” Well, of course our Pack has been busy yet again! At October’s Pack meeting, we had our Bobcat Ceremony to recognize the first rank earned by all of our new Scouts. The ceremony was a great adventure as the Cub Master and Assistant Cubmaster did face painting and beat on drums in celebration. Afterwards, the kids were able to play games and collect candy and prizes at our Fall Festival! Towards the end of the month the Webelos attended a two night camp out called World of Webelos. They were able to earn several of their pins toward rank and had a lot more responsibility than usual. They had to pitch their own tents, cook their own meals and clean up after themselves. It was a nice treat for the parents! November looks to be just as fun filled! We have the end of Popcorn celebration Pizza Party, Pushmobile and of course, Thanksgiving! Remember, it’s not too late to join the Pack! If you have a 1st-5th grade boy at Fiest Elementary or in the surrounding area that would like to be a Cub Scout, please visit our website at www.pack445.org. We hope everyone has a great month and we’ll see ya’ next time!

Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child is a ministry project devoted to reaching underprivileged children all over the world with the true meaning of Christmas. The project accomplishes this goal by collecting simple gifts complied into shoeboxes from people all over the U.S.A. These gifts consist of hygiene items, small toys, candy, school supplies, etc. The items are packed into shoeboxes along with the story of the Nativity, printed in their native language. The gift is so simple but the impact is huge. Last year, Epiphany Lutheran Church participated in the project and the response was amazing. The church collected over 80 full boxes to ship overseas from the congregation alone. “We felt such a strong connection to this cause. It was truly moving,” remarks one Epiphany member. This year, Epiphany has decided to take advantage of its new, more visible location on West Rd. and Jackrabbit, to become a collection center for OCC. This means that during collection week, anyone who wishes to participate in OCC can drop of his or her donations to Epiphany Lutheran Church. The church will transport the collected items to the nearest distribution center. Collection week is November 14th - 21st. For more information on Operation Christmas Child and directions to the nearest drop off location, go to www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/OCC/ index.

At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordan’s focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.

GIVE AN HOUR™ NETWORK Provides Free Counseling to Troops and Families
Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/ uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service.

HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”
60
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

61
Our primary mission is to rescue (from pounds and shelters) purebred (and a few mixed) dachshunds that end up alone, abandoned and/or abused and for many of them, it can be an 11th hour rescue. All of our rescued dachsies receive a complete health evaluation by our accredited veterinary clinics and are either spayed or neutered (if not already), given immunizations, dental care and are started on any necessary medical treatment(s). Our focus following rescue, is rehabilitation and relocation into a safe and loving foster home. These dachshunds are all in need of a second chance at life and simple basics like human affection, which they may have been without their entire little lives. And for that reason… We’re in desperate need of Foster Parents! As a foster parent, you’ll have the opportunity to help so many dogs. You’ll provide them a place to stay and be loved until they are healthy and strong enough to be adopted. Fostering is very rewarding, and the puppy kisses you’ll receive are priceless! If you think you might be interested in fostering or maybe even adopting, please join us at Dachshund Rescue of Houston on Facebook or visit us and our “dachsies in waiting” on our website at www.dachshundrescueofhouston. org. Pet Hotline News
Too many pets are getting out without any form of ID and collars. The shelters are filled up and will euthanize within 24 hrs. This happened to someone’s pet in Deerfield. Please put a collar and phone # on your pet. I will be happy to call the owner if you find a pet and let them know that it should have been kept in a safe environment. I do know that there are circumstances whereby a gate is ajar or a utility person leaves it open after checking the meter and that pet gets out. You can reach the county website at www.countypets.com and their phone number is 713-999-3191.
