Did you know that in 2011, we painted all of our buildings, painted most of our fences inside the community (an issue that we struggled with for years) and we installed new floor coverings in the recreation center as well as the community center? Two years ago, we conducted a “reserve study” which told us how much money we need to keep in reserves to cover the periodic upkeep and replacement of the property we all have an opportunity to enjoy. This was based on our community property and the expected life of the property. The Board of Directors has done an excellent job in moving money into this new Reserve Fund account. The Reserve Fund keeps the community Board of Directors from having to pursue a special assessment on the homeowners for upkeep or repairs that are needed on the community property.

Other items you may not see that are covered by your HOA fees are: • Insurance coverage’s, liability, directors and officers, crime and umbrella policies • Property taxes on our community property • Administrative expenses involved with performing accounts payable, accounts receivable, past-due collections, maintaining deed violation files for each address in the community and with outside agencies in these areas. • Processing architectural modifications and applications and record keeping. (Most communities charge this cost back to the applicant homeowner.) • Sending out welcome letters to new homeowners • Monitoring changes in HOA law • Process document and inspection requests from title companies • Recording necessary documents with the county • Formal accounting services such as corporate tax return, franchise tax, possible tax deposits and required audits • Provide customer service center and after hours emergency contact • Pay utility bills • Maintain website • Deed restriction enforcement • Reserve funds for future repairs and improvements • Provide maintenance on common areas and repair amenities • Hold required meetings • Assist Board of Directors with carrying out fiscal responsibilities

One of the responsibilities of the Board of Directors is to maintain the community in a fashion as to not create a decline in the value of your personally owned properties within the community. This can be done not only in the maintenance we provide but in enhancements to the community, which makes this community marketable and a desirable place to purchase a home. One of the newest in this category will be the fence the HOA will build and own along the Skinner Road Improvement Project. This fence will be similar in design to the new fence along Cypress-Rosehill. Our Community Manager keeps a running “task list” month to month. Some items we remove, some we continue to pursue and some items just stay on the “back burner” to be reviewed periodically. Many issues are still on that list and the Board of Directors wants input from the community on some of these issues. As an example the Board has looked at: Adding shade areas either at the parks, the walking paths, or in the pool area. We also have on our discussion table larger topics for the community, such as a splash pad, adding a kitchen area to the clubhouse, building a storage facility in the pool areas for furniture storage in the off season to enhance its lifespan. We are also considering the installation of a Monument style Marquee for the neighborhood.

The Board of Directors meets monthly, except in November and December, unless a meeting is necessary. Our meeting time is 7:00 pm on the fourth Wednesday of each month. We allow three minutes time to any homeowner who wants to discuss any issue with the board and attendees at the meetings. We also have “Executive Sessions” where private matters can be discussed with homeowners one-on-one. This is generally a time for homeowners who need financial help with their assessments. Trash Collection

Please be aware that trash is not picked up on holidays; July 4th, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Christmas Day, etc … these workers deserve a holiday too. Trash will be picked up on the next scheduled collection day. If you are in doubt, please contact Waste Corporation of America, 281-368-8397, to confirm your next pick up day. As always, please be courteous to your neighbors and do not put out your trash before 6 pm on the previous evening and please bring in your trash bin as soon as possible after pickup. Let’s keep our neighborhood looking beautiful.

Just a friendly reminder …

Please be considerate and pick up after your dog when you are out walking. This includes any common area including the retention ponds. It is illegal to sweep grass clippings and trash in the drains. It is also disrespectful to your neighbors to throw trash over your fence into common areas or the retention ponds. Remember, we do have trash pickup twice a week. Please report any inappropriate actions to PMG Management at 281-2133184.

Street Light Out?

Have you noticed a street light out? You can report it to CenterPoint Energy 24 hours a day at 713-207-2222. Choose a language preference and then select option “4” for street light outages. Please provide the street light’s six digit number located approximately 5 feet up the pole. Also, it is helpful to give the street name and address.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch, aerate and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep

After March 5th we cannot guarantee a place on a team. They will practice for one hour a week on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. Northwest Flyers Track Club

Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls ages 4 to 18 for the spring season. Games start on April 7, 2012. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal playing time, opportunities to play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive coaching and more. No tryouts are required. Registration fee includes a full uniform (shirt, shorts and socks), trophy, trained positive coaches, nice fields and background checks on all volunteers. All major credit cards are accepted. Registration schedule and fees: January 3rd – February 6th: $85 Online February 7th – March 5th: $90 Online March 6th – 19th: $95 Online March 20th and After: $100 Online Coaches will call players to schedule practice by April 3rd. Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood. As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with

his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordan’s focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.

This year’s Northwest Private School Preview is set for Sunday, January 29, 2012 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the Cypress Creek YMCA located on 19915 SH 249 @ Cypresswood Drive. For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-the-Boot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will also be out March 10th, April 14th and May 12th to collect funds for the campaign. The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute.
