APRIL IS NATIONAL LAWN AND GARDEN MONTH

By Trey Collier April is National Lawn and Garden month! This gives you a wonderful reason to get outside and get your backyard and garden ready. Whether you are starting from scratch or are an experienced pro, here are several tips that you can use to celebrate Lawn and Garden month in style! Consider Backyard Composting - Composting is nature’s process of recycling decomposed organic materials into a rich soil known as compost. Backyard composting is an acceleration of the process that occurs in nature. It is recycling at its finest! Use kitchen waste (such as food or paper towels), lawn clippings and wood chips to provide rich and powerful soil for your garden and lawn. Anything that was once living will decompose, giving you endless options for composting. Composting is good for your plants and for you! Adding organic materials to the soil improves moisture retention. It provides a balanced, slow-release source of nutrients that helps the soil hold nutrients long enough for plants to use them. Healthier plants means a healthier you! It will also save you money because you will no longer have to buy fertilizer. Add a compost bin to your garden and start today! Add a fountain - Outdoor fountains offer an easy and affordable way to add style to your lawn or garden. The soothing sound of running water will help to create a tranquil and relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Transform your garden into your own personal paradise! Consider adding variety - If you are fond of flower gardening, venture into edible vegetables! You will be thrilled with the sense of accomplishment you feel when you feed your family fresh, healthy produce that you grew on your own. Beans, squash, cucumbers, lettuce/greens, tomatoes, peppers, beets and garlic are all great vegetables to start with. They are relatively easy to maintain and will offer beautiful variety. If you are already growing your own vegetables, consider planting an eye catching flower garden (try marigold, lupine, daisy or wildflower mix

Go high-tech - Modern technology impacts our daily life. Why not let it impact your backyard? There are several innovations in outdoor living that you will wonder how you ever lived without. The Robomower will make mowing your lawn virtually effortless. No more back-breaking work and labor intensive afternoons spent cutting grass. You simply install special sensors around the perimeter of your yard and push a button. It doesn’t get much easier than that! Another product worth trying is the Mosquito Eliminator. Gone are the days of tacky bug zappers and pesky insects at parties. It is so beautiful that your guests will never guess that it is fighting mosquitoes and other pests. The Eliminator uses high-tech black light technology to cover up to 1,000 feet and capture up to 6,000 mosquitoes with one cartridge. Other garden technology to be on the look for: gardening apps for smartphones (such as iVeggieGarden, which allows you to view over 500 varieties of vegetables and offers tips and ideas), time lapsed garden cameras (which take pictures at various intervals and produce videos or slideshows showing growth progress) and electronic soil testers.

PLANTING THE RIGHT TREE IN THE RIGHT PLACE

CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way. Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected. If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of

windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line. CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control. Most important is proper watering: • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.

If you hear noises in your walls, tap gently where you’re hearing the noise. If the animal is able to, this should scare them out. If you continue to hear the noise, this may mean a baby is stuck. Seek professional help for removal but make sure you hire a company that will work to try to reunite the mother and baby. Trapping only mothers or removing babies without the mother is cruel and inhumane. Not all animal control companies are alike, so do your research. Ask questions. Get specifics on how the animals will be handled. Will the animal be killed and if so, why? Are there offspring that will be orphaned or abandoned? Insist on humane techniques. If you need assistance finding a humane animal control company, give TWRC Wildlife Center a call.

IT’S THAT TIME

By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center This is the time of year when you may hear the pitter patter of tiny feet in your attic or chitter chatter in your walls or chimneys. It’s baby season in the world of wildlife. The most likely animals that may be using your home or out-buildings as a nesting site are raccoons and squirrels. If you’re hearing activity during the day, it’s probably a squirrel. Raccoons are nocturnal and are active at night. If you have a raccoon “renting” from you, it’s best if you can leave her alone for a few weeks. When the babies are old enough, she will move out on her own taking her babies with her. If you’d like to strongly encourage her to leave, in the evening you can place a loud radio, bright lights and unpleasant smells (vinegar is good) in the attic or at the base of your chimney. This will create an unpleasant environment for her.

The best way to prevent attic guests is to inspect your home for entry points and block them. Make sure, however, that there are no animals in your attic or walls before you do this. Look over, under and around your roof area. If you find openings, repair them. Remember, although animals may be unwelcomed guests, they are only looking for a dry, quiet, safe place to give birth and care for their little ones until they’re old enough to be on their own - just like us. For more information or for help with wildlife issues, call TWRC Wildlife Center at 713-468-TWRC or check our website at www.twrcwildlifecenter.org.

Cadette Troop 16435 reports that they attended the “Be an Upstander” event at the Holocaust Museum. They earned the ‘Science of Happiness” badge and the Interact award towards the “Amaze Journey.”

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY

April will be a busy time for our Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts, with activities such as Cadette Weekend, Scouts at SAM and Girl Scout Law Day. Some of these older Girl Scouts will also be participating with adults as delegates to the annual Council Meeting. Daisy Troop 113049 reports that they made “blessing bags” to be handed out to those in need.

Our Girl Scout Cookie sale for 2016 concluded on March 20th. Hope you stocked up, as there will be a long wait before cookie time rolls around again! Many thanks to all our cookie volunteers and to all the troops who participated. We appreciate the support of our friends and neighbors. ! Money earned from the annual Cookie sale funds individual troop activities and supports Council programs and camps. Some of our troops really made their cookie booths special. Members of troop 113035 had a cookie booth on Valentine’s Day and report that they sold 200 boxes in 2 hours. These Girl Scouts really enjoy dressing up. They represented Vietnam at our World Thinking Day event and took part in our cafeteria-size Friendship Circle. The World Thinking Day event drew almost 200 girls (and their leaders). Each troop represented a different country and presented national costumes, music, food and crafts at their booths. They also had some great swaps! Stick on mustaches, crepes and chocolate lollipops that were shaped like the Eiffel tower were featured at the “France” booth. Maracas made from plastic spoons and Easter eggs accompanied Fiesta costumes at the Mexico booth the special collars and headdresses seen at the Egypt booth looked as if they had come from the King Tut exhibit. Beautiful costumes, bright colors and lots of smiling faces made traveling “around the world” as easy as moving around the cafeteria! Our event started off with a flag ceremony and recitation of the Girl Scout Promise and finished up with a Friendship Circle and singing “Make New Friends.” We also collected donations for the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund. Our STRIDERS event brought an afternoon of track and field events, with families coming out to cheer on their daughters. Girls jumped rope, ran in individual and relay races, threw softballs and jumped in standing and running events. We also had a few snacks to keep up our strength for all those activities. Our spring Leader/Daughter event in Wimberley featured “Art in Bloom” crafts and activities, as well as the Talent Show, Dutch oven Cook-off and all our usual fun activities. Horseback riding and rock climbing, kayaking, shopping and eating the results of the Dutch Oven Cook-Off are all part of this exciting weekend.

April 2016

We are getting close to the end of the school Scouting year, with a Bridging Ceremony planned for May, as troops move on to the next Girl Scout level. Summer brings resident, day and twilight camps and the chance to learn new skills, have fun and make new friends. Some of our troops are also looking forward to the Girl Scout Night Sleepover at the Sugarland Skeeters stadium; they will be taking part in a parade around the stadium, enjoying the game and pitching their tents on the field afterwards! Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the elementary schools listed below, as well as the corresponding middle and high schools. Home schoolers and private school students are always welcome. Our elementary schools are: Birkes, Fiest, Hairgrove, Horne, Kirk, Lee, Lieder, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Tipps, Wilson, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Texas Christian School and Christian Life Center. SALUTE TO OUR HEROES GALA

On February 13, 2016, the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) held its 8th Annual Salute to Our Heroes Gala at the Omni Hotel Houston Westside raising over $100,000 to benefit graduating seniors from the Cypress Fairbanks ISD.

Kevin “Dauber” Lacz, former Navy SEAL sniper and combat medic was our guest speaker for the evening. Lacz spoke from the heart about his experiences as a Navy SEAL and the impact his service in the military had on his life. As a Certified Physician Assistant, Lacz uses his past experiences to facilitate his work in medicine and charity and actively seeks to support service members and veterans in his community. Lacz inspired us all with his motivational story, winning attitude and continued commitment to service. Joe Myers Ford Lincoln generously underwrote this year’s Salute to Our Heroes Gala and we are grateful that they have agreed to underwrite this event in 2017. Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital and North Cypress Medical Center were Major General Sponsors this year. Salute to Our Heroes has raised more than half a million dollars over the past eight years, funding several endowed scholarships for students graduating from the Cypress Fairbanks ISD. CFEF was established in 1970 as a non-profit to raise money to fund a scholarship for high school graduates in the area. Over the past 46 years, the Foundation has grown tremendously through the efforts of the Board of Trustees and the generosity of the Cy-Fair Community. The Foundation has awarded more than $6 million in scholarships to 1,300 graduating seniors. CFEF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, all contributions are tax deductible, as allowed by the law. For more information, please contact marie@thecfef.org or visit our website at www.thecfef. org .
