STREET LIGHT OUTAGE
Please report any street light outage to Centerpoint. Repairs can take up to 3 weeks to be repaired, but the most recent request we made took only 2 days! It is imperative that residents participate in reporting outages, as there is no formal nighttime inspection done by management or Centerpoint. It’s simple, just go to www.centerpointenergy.com/outage and fill in the required information. You’ll need the 6 digit number located at the base of the light pole and an approximate address/location of the outage. You may also report it by dialing 713-207-2222.

Nautilus, 1st nuclear-powered ship in the world, was launched on January 21, 1954? • Gold was discovered in California on January 24, 1848? • Transcontinental telephone service was established in United States on January 25, 1915? • Thomas Edison was granted the first patent for his incandescent light on January 27, 1880? • U.S. space shuttle Challenger exploded, killing all seven crewmembers aboard on January 28, 1986? • Some important people in history born in January: Paul Revere, Betsy Ross, J. Edgar Hoover, Millard Fillmore, Richard M. Nixon, Alexander Hamilton, Benedict Arnold, Albert Schweitzer, Martin Luther King, Jr., Benjamin Franklin, Robert E. Lee, Edgar Allan Poe, Stonewall Jackson, John Hancock, Douglas MacArthur, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, William McKinley and Franklin D. Roosevelt. • The following were admitted as part of the United States: Alaska, Utah, New Mexico, Michigan and Kansas.
GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in.

• Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

It’s a stark irony of the Western calendar that the odometer turns over smack dab in the middle of winter, the one time of the year when most people can’t rouse themselves to clean their bathrooms, much less make an ambitious, life-changing, behavioral U-turn. If you’re the type who likes to ring in the New Year with an engraved list of resolutions, read on for hints about how best to keep them. Aim low. It goes without saying that most New Year’s resolutions are easier announced (or written) than done, but if you set the bar too high, you’re doomed from the start. Instead of a sweeping declaration like “I will lose 30 pounds by April and finally fit into that dress,” target a goal that’s more attainable, like losing 10 or 15 pounds. Don’t overload yourself. It’s difficult enough for the average person to follow through on one ambitious New Year’s resolution; why on earth would you saddle yourself with three or four? Choose the most pressing issue at hand losing weight, finding a girlfriend, improving your relationship with your parents and concentrate on that. Trying to do everything simultaneously practically guarantees failure across the board. Tell everyone you know. One school of thought says that New Year’s resolutions are best kept to oneself, but look at it this way: the more people to whom you announce your resolution (say, to get out of your dead-end job by spring), the more people there’ll be to prod you along if you fall behind. There’s no shame in seeking help if you can’t accomplish your resolution on your own. Reward yourself. Following through on a New Year’s resolution is rarely easy, so a little Pavlovian conditioning goes a long way. If you’ve resolved to shop less, stroke yourself for not buying those shoes by springing for a steaming hot cappuccino at the mall. If you’ve resolved to be nicer to people, buy yourself a nice jacket after enduring that tedious cocktail party without delivering any insults.
January 2012
Cypress Ridge
Wait until spring. Sometimes the best way to accomplish a New Year’s resolution is to make it at a time of year of your choosing, rather than the one dictated by the calendar. May 1st is a good alternate date, since the change of season will neatly coincide with the change you’re hoping to accomplish in yourself. By Bob Strauss, www.ehow.com.
INDOOR EXERCISE FOR KIDS
Motivating kids to stay fit is a challenge. There’s so much competition: television, computer games, talking to friends on the phone. It’s even harder when the weather is bad or if there’s not a safe place outdoors to exercise. But encouraging children to stay fit is more important than ever. Studies show that a growing number of American children are overweight or obese. This puts them at risk for health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. Overweight children tend to have lower self-esteem, too, and may be treated unfairly by other kids in school. Even small amounts of exercise can help children stay at a healthful weight. With some planning, children can find ways to exercise without leaving home. Tame the TV One great way to get kids exercising is to cut back on the amount of time they spend sitting around not moving—especially time spent watching television. An article in the journal Physician and Sportsmedicine shows that reducing TV time diverts children to more active pursuits. Additional studies show a link between TV time and obesity—the more people watch, the more likely they are to be overweight. Your Home Gym—no equipment required Children can stay in good shape by doing simple exercises in the home, says Ken Baldwin, MEd., a personal trainer certified by the American Council on Exercise. Baldwin, a children’s fitness expert, says children and adolescents “should work on strength-training and agility skills and cardiovascular training.”
Cypress Ridge
Baldwin recommends this routine: 1. Warm up by running stairs or jumping rope. 2. Stretch the trunk, arms and legs to limber up. 3. Do a set of 10 to 15 pushups, keeping the back straight and stomach muscles tight when going up and down. 4. Do a set of 15 to 25 crunches to work the stomach (abdominal) muscles. Do this lying on your back with your arms behind your head. Keep the small of your back on the ground while lifting your head and shoulders up off the ground. 5. Do a set of 15 to 25 squats to work the lower body. Hold onto the back of a chair or doorknob for support and bend down at the knees and stand up again. When squatting down, keep your back straight, sit straight down and rise straight up again. Keep your knees from moving forward to reduce strain on your ankles. Children and teens should try to repeat this routine until they’ve been active for 30 minutes or more, Baldwin says. As kids gain strength, they can build up their sets from 15 or 20 repetitions to 35 repetitions and upward. Sticking to the routine by doing it every day or every other day will help kids get stronger and keep them in shape, Baldwin says. “These are all things that can be done indoors without any special equipment,” he says. Other options: Baldwin says organizations such as the YMCA are great for keeping in shape. Other options include school gyms and swimming pools if they are open in the evening, or malls or shopping centers where children can walk laps. Children can also stay active by doing housework and using stairs instead of the elevator. The key thing is to build activity into a child’s daily routine. Remember that setting a good example helps. Join your child in the exercise routine or plan regular family walks or bicycle trips to keep moving. www.christusstcatherine.org

Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood. As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with

his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordan’s focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.
BERYL RAMSEY AND WAYNE VOSS TO CHAIR GO RED FOR WOMEN LUNCHEON SET FOR FEBRUARY 13, 2012
CEO of Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, Beryl Ramsey, returns to Chair the Go Red For Women Luncheon in partnership with CEO of Methodist West Houston Hospital, Wayne Voss. Together, Ramsey and Voss will serve as Co-Chairs and lead efforts to raise awareness that heart disease remains the number one killer of women, but is often preventable with healthy lifestyle choices.
This year’s luncheon will be held on Monday, Feb. 13th at the Berry Center in Cy-Fair and is expected to draw more than 400 business and community leaders. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn tips on heart disease and stroke prevention from local experts, listen to a heart-warming story of survival from an area resident, participate in interactive breakout displays and shop the “purse-onalities” silent auction. The silent auction is a unique piece of the luncheon that features items representative of the diverse personalities of the community. Purses can be anything from actual handbags to golf bags to briefcases. This year’s auction will include something for everyone! Melissa Wilson of Fox 26 Morning News will emcee the event and Dr. Valentina Ugolini of Willowbrook Cardiovascular Associates will be the featured medical speaker. Ramsey and Voss and their team of volunteers have a goal of raising a record-breaking $200,000 to support educational programs that the American Heart Association provides and the life-saving research it funds to reduce the effects of heart disease in women. Today, only 1 in 5 women believe that heart disease is their greatest health threat. More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next three causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. Go Red for Women celebrates the energy, passion and power that women can use to band together to wipe out heart disease and stroke. To secure a sponsorship, purchase tables and/or tickets, or for further information, contact Priscilla Luna at 713-610-5071 or email priscilla. luna@heart.org. For more information about Go Red For Women, visit GoRedForWomen.org or call 1-888-MY-HEART. Go Red For Women is sponsored nationally by Macy’s and Merck & Co., Inc. About the American Heart Association The American Heart Association is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Our mission is to build healthier lives by preventing, treating and defeating these diseases - America’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers. We fund cutting-edge research, conduct lifesaving public and professional educational programs, and advocate to protect public health. Volunteer Opportunities Cypress Assistance Ministries Volunteers Needed
When you volunteer you are giving to your community, but did you realize volunteering also benefits you as an individual? CAM volunteers often let us know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the fulfillment they receive from helping others. The services provided at CAM, are made possible by many dedicated volunteers. If you enjoy working with the public, decorating or merchandising, then serving in CAM’s resale shop, Angels’ Attic, is the place for you. Our busy community donation area, the Cellar, is looking for people willing to serve by processing donations and restocking Angels’ Attic. Please plan to attend a volunteer tour and orientation by calling Tara Rauch 281-955-7683 or email at tarar@cypressassistance.org. For a description of the services provided at Cypress Assistance Ministries, Food Pantry requests, and a detailed description of volunteer opportunities, please see our web site, www.cypressassistance.org.
