Spring clean-up and lawn maintenance Spring is just around the corner! Time for Spring clean-up and lawn maintenance. When planning your garden keep in mind that we are forecasted another very hot summer. Please consider these deed restrictions: 1. Trash cans are to be out of site or in the garage, per deed restrictions. 2. Cars are not to be parked in the street overnight. 3. Please DO NOT post signs and notices on the gates. 4. Pets should always be kept on a leash and cleaned up after when walking in the Communities. Are you interested in becoming more involved with your community? The Falcon Point East Board of Directors is looking for volunteers for the pool/park committee. Please let AMI Representative, Trinh Basarabescu or any board member know if you can volunteer some time.

My name is Jason Blackman and this will be the third year that I have assisted with the Garage Sale. At the recent Annual Meeting, the Board named me Chair of the Garage Sale Committee. would be willing to assist with preparations, sign placement or just helping getting the word out, I NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU! The Board and I wish to make this the best Garage Sale yet and to do that, we need volunteers. My email is jasonblackman@ comcast.net. Feel free to email me for more details. As before, the signs will go up during the week leading up to the Sale and I will post an ad on Craigslist for the Sale. Thank you for your attention and help! PETS Please remember your pets must be on a leash at all times and any waste must be picked up. Animals are not allowed at the community park/pool area.

trash REMINDER Trash receptacles and recycle bins must be stored in garage or behind house out of public view on non-trash days. This is unsightly and is not the image we want to present in our community. Trash pickup days are Tuesday and Friday. Friday is heavy trash day. Trash should not be placed at curb before 6:00 PM the night before trash is picked up. Please respect the deed restrictions.

SPEEDING If you observe speeding cars in your area, you can contact the Sheriff’s Department at 281-341-4665 to request patrols so that speeding is discouraged. The Sheriff’s Department has been given authority to enforce traffic laws on our private streets.

EMAIL ADDRESSES In an effort to get information out to our residents in a timely manner, we are asking homeowners to voluntarily submit their email addresses to be included on a mailing list for Falcon Point use only. Sending email will allow us to keep homeowners informed of upcoming events (garage sale, National Night Out, etc.), scheduled maintenance (gate repair, etc.) and other issues of concern to our neighborhood. Your email information will be kept confidential. We will not sell or give it away to anyone. If you would like to participate, send your name, physical address and email address to Meridith Wehrle at wehrleml@hotmail.com.

SOCCER FIELD RESERVATIONS

The soccer fields at the neighborhood center can be reserved by logging on to the Falcon Point East HOA website at www.falconpointeast.org. Register on the website if you have not already done so. KIDS Folk Life Festival

needs fabric

I am collecting fabric and old sheets to make rag dolls at the KIDS Folk Life Festival on March 31st. At the Folk Life Festival we show people how to make rag dolls like they did years ago from scrap fabric. Last year we had almost 4,000 people who wanted to make these dolls but we ran out of fabric. I had no idea it would be such a popular station, so I am starting now asking for fabric donations. If you have any fabric (cotton is the best) or old sheets, let me know and I can come get it from you or you can drop it off at a school near you and I can collect it there. If you would like to volunteer at the folk life festival, please contact me at slbedwards@att.net.

Talan Holmes Charity Golf Classic is a Golf Tournament that has one main goal. We are all about providing funds to a group of people who are born with Tebial Hemimelia (TH from here on). TH is a rare malformation, 1:1,000,000 or lack of formation of the Tibia which is the weight bearing bone in the bottom of the leg. This tournament started out to pay the medical expenses of Talan Holmes, the tournament chairman’s son. Talan has undergone his first surgery and is now working with his first prosthesis trying to learn to walk. Many families, like the Holmes family, are unaware of TH and until delivery don’t know that their child has TH. Our goal, while still paying the medical expenses of Talan, is to help other families that may not have the ability to raise their own funds or simply can’t raise enough to get their child the prosthesis that he or she needs. The Golf Tournament is on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the River Ridge Gold Club, 3133 Brazos Oak Lane, Sealy, TX 77474. Registration begins - 6:30 AM, Breakfast - 7:00 AM and Event Start Time - 9:00 AM For more information about the tournament, sign up to be a sponsor and to register, visit www.birdeasepro.com/talan2012. Keep Kids Connected Bingo Fundraiser on Saturday, March 3rd at 6 pm at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Old Katy. The event will start with an enchilada dinner from 5-6 pm for $6 for anyone who is interested. The Bingo Fundraiser is $25 per person for 12 games (on 9 cards for each game) with a free bingo dauber for each player. For more information, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com. Second Saturday Aluminum Can Collection - If you live in the Houston Area, please consider participating in our “Cans for a Cure” Recycling Program. The second Saturday of each month, Keep Kids Connected collects aluminum beverage cans at the Tradition Bank Pin Oak Branch location from 9 am-12 pm. The proceeds from recycling the cans helps fund the purchase of Netbook computers and pediatric cancer research. Invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to support this recycling pro-gram and donate their aluminum cans to Keep Kids Connected. Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission. For more information about Keep Kids Connected go to the website, www.keepkidsconnected.org or check out their Facebook page! If you would like to get on the contact list for upcoming events, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com.

KATY TKD ACADEMY’S C3 BOOSTER CLUB COLLECTS TOYS & SUPPLIES FOR TOTS & MARINES

10 Week Course Saturday Classes Only Spring Classes Begin 3/31/12 Tuition $2850 • Payment Plans Training Since 1995 Open House 3/2/12 • 4-7 pm

Each year the Katy TaeKwonDo Academy’s C3 Booster Club holds several community events that benefit the Katy community. This past holiday season booster club supporters shined in their acts of “Community,” one of the valued “Cs” in the C3 Booster Club name. In December, the C3 Booster Club once again partnered with the U.S. Marines in their Toys For Tots toy drive and this year added a second collection drive - gathering supplies for an active Marine platoon.

in just 10 weeks!

The generosity of Katy TKD Academy students and C3 Booster Club members was evident as toys mounded in Toys For Tots collection boxes. On “delivery day” Marine representatives joined academy students and staff to celebrate with a photo and a cheer to send off the toys to needy boys and girls.

Abundant generosity didn’t stop with toys. Corporal Patrick Reade, brother to academy staff instructor, Michael Reade, is stationed with the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan. Cpl. Reade’s platoon is the fortunate recipient of boxes upon boxes of food and supplies graciously donated by Katy TKD Academy students. The C3 Booster Club is a philanthropic organization that strives to make a difference in Katy and beyond by giving back to its students and the community. The not-for-profit organization operates throughcorporate donations, event fundraisers and membership dues. Primary fundraisers throughout the year are corporate sponsorships, Parents Night Out nights, memberships and the exciting annual Board Break-A-Thon. Civil Air Patrol Cadet Earns Pilot’s License Cadet 2d Lt. Javier Rocha from Katy, Texas, earned his private pilot’s license in December 2011. The seventeen year old cadet first flew in a CAP Cessna as a passenger during an orientation flight in February of 2009. “During that flight, I knew instantly that I had to become a pilot.” His first act after receiving his license, was to proudly take each family member for a ride. Along with this accomplishment, Cadet Rocha has earned the Doolittle Award, a high honor for cadets. He holds a leadership position in the cadet squadron, has attended encampments for training in emergency services and takes an active part in ground team management during squadron search and rescue exercises. His goal after graduating high school is to obtain a commercial pilot’s license, go to college, then to join the Air Force as an officer in flight training. Javier is currently a senior at Cy-Springs High School. The Civil Air Patrol is open to boys and girls from the age of 12 thru 21 years old and seniors 21 years old and over. They enjoy good fellowship with training in leadership, ground operations and flight line management. They are afforded the opportunity of flying in orientation flights. They aid their communities at time of local disasters and emergencies.

History teacher at Cinco Ranch Junior High, with the Outstanding Teacher of American History award at the meeting held January 10, 2012. Mrs. Kerlick has been teaching in Katy ISD for 21 years and while she has taught many subjects, her greatest joy is teaching American History. She loves this country and strives each day to passionately present the history of the United States in a way that not only touches the minds of teens but, more importantly, their hearts. Making the presentation is Star of Destiny Member Rebecca Miller, assisted by her daughter, Anna, who is one of Mrs. Kerlick’s 8th grade students.

Certificate of Appreciation The Star of Destiny, NSDAR, Chapter in Katy, Texas was proud to award Phillip Powell, class of 2012 at Seven Lakes High School, a Certificate of Appreciation for his American flag service. Phillip currently has subscribers in the Seven Meadows and Cinco Ranch Section II subdivisions where he places the American Flag in yards for six American patriotic holidays each year. Phillip developed this flag service after he volunteered for his uncle in Tyler, Texas. He returned to Katy and developed his own business! We commend his patriotic efforts in our community.

The St. Peter’s choir is under the direction of David Galasso. General admission tickets are $10 each in advance or at the door. To purchase tickets, visit www.fbso.org or call 281-276-9642.

Planting the Right Tree in the Right Place CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way.

Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected.

Falcon Point East

March 2012

If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line.

ARBORMASTER

2nd Generation Tree Expert

CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power linefriendly trees, visit CenterPointEnergy.com/trees

A Brief History of St Patrick’s Day The story of St. Patrick’s Day begins around 385 A.D. with a man named Maewyn, who at age 16, was sold into slavery, which brought him closer to God. He managed to escape slavery and headed to a monastery in Gaul to study, where he adopted the Christian name “Patrick.” For the next 30 years, he traveled throughout the country, setting up monasteries and converting the natives. After his death in 461 (on March 17th), he was declared a saint. So what happened from there? The first St. Patrick’s Day Parade was in America in New York City in 1762, not Ireland, and consisted of Irish soldiers in the English military marching through the city. This was a chance for the soldiers to reconnect with their heritage. Ireland, on the other hand, does not have such a long history of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. This changed around 1995, when the government made a push to use St. Patrick’s Day as a way to drive tourism and to showcase Ireland to the rest of the world. Parades and celebrations are now common in Ireland around this day (in fact, their celebrations last several days) and some one million people took part in last year’s festivities in Dublin.

When people nowadays think of this day, they get an image of the shamrock in their head. Why? Its origins are rooted in Patrick himself. He used the shamrock as a way to show how the trinity works: three separate elements of the same entity. So wherever you are, whether you’re Irish or not, get out there and enjoy the day!

Fix Your Body Boredom!

Tired of not seeing results from those hours at the gym? Salads not doing it for you anymore? Check out some of my personal tips. I promise, you WILL see changes and get “unbored” of your body! • Look in the mirror - like what you see? Make it better. Bored with the image? Fix it now. • Get off that treadmill - Jump onto the exercise bike and SPIN. YES - you can do this! • Good-bye sit-ups - Hanging leg pull-ups, planks, reverse crunches are your new friends. • So long to push-ups - Chin ups will get you those strong biceps quicker. • Close your mouth - Trimming that muffin top begins with watching what you eat. • Fast food 1x per month NOT 21x a week - Dietitians recommend fast food ONLY 1x per month. • Do something new NOW - Take a Zumba class, join a local martial arts school, Crossfit; do something new! • No more excuses - Saying you don’t have time means you have time to make excuses. Get up and get going!
