Dear Governors Place Residents, we have seen an increase in activity that required sheriff attention. Together as a community we must always be alert for both ourselves and our neighbors. Please phone (713-221-6000) the sheriff for anything suspicious; robbery, suspicious looking people, speeding, etc. We have to crackdown on crime in our neighborhood.

Maintaining Property Values

One of the important purposes of a homeowner’s association is to enforce the terms of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions that are “attached to” our properties when we buy them. These documents provide for an Architectural Control Committee to approve changes or additions to the exteriors of our homes or lots. If you are planning to paint your house or replace your roof, contact Arrow Community Management at 281-395-7005 and ask for an ACC form. Please fill out the form and return it for approval by the ACC Committee. While it may be an inconvenience, it is a means of cooperating with your neighbors, so that we all maintain the “curb appeal” that attracts buyers. This means more dollars when you want to sell your home. Another important part of the DCCR concerns the enforcement of deed restrictions. Governors Place does this by having Arrow do two monthly inspections. If you receive a notice for a deed restriction violation, don’t feel insulted but please don’t ignore it. If you don’t understand it or think there is a mistake, call Arrow Community Management at 281-395-7005 or send a written response. Most of the time, violations are corrected after one notice and no further action is required. Let’s all work together to help keep our community a nice place to live.

Waste removal

Please remember not to place your garbage out any sooner than the night before the scheduled pick-up day. After pick-up, all garbage cans should be kept out of public view. They should not be kept in front of garages, in the front yards of any home or on the side of any home. Please make every effort to conceal the trashcans from public view on non-trash days.

RECREATIONAL VEHICLES

Parking recreational vehicles in the community is a violation of the governing rules and regulations. We understand this is the time of year vacations and family visits are planned, so if you will take a moment to call Arrow Community Management at 281-395-7005 to notify us as to when you will have your recreational vehicle(s) in the driveway, we will give you 1 to 2 days grace period. We understand people have to live, that is why we want to open the lines of communication. If we do not hear from you and your vehicle(s) are noticed on our regular inspection, don’t get upset when you receive a citation. Again, we will only allow parking of recreational vehicles for a short period of 1 to 2 days.

• Cars may not be parked on the front lawn of your property. • trailers, boats, RVs, recreational vehicles must be stored out of view of the street. • remember that our streets are very narrow and utilize your driveway to park cars. • store trash cans out of street view. • Now is the time to start cleaning out gutters and roof tops to get rid of pine needles and leaves. • We urge parents to advise your children to ride scooters and electric toys on the sidewalks, NOT in the streets. There have been too many near misses reported and we don’t want a child to “learn their lesson” the hard way by being hit by a car.

Although the streets in Governors Place are public, we are receiving numerous complaints regarding parking of personal vehicles and commercial vehicles in the streets. The parking of COMMERCIAL VEHICLES within the community is RESTRICTED in the governing documents and fines will be assessed. Please try to utilize your driveways as much as possible when parking your personal vehicles.

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA

• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817.

• Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an

inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on indemand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier: Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping. This will make your day more organized, and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make. • Sign up for store e-mail updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale. • Print out any online coupons you may have. • Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Borders and Barnes & Noble offer such programs. • Consider outlet shopping. The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. This will not help your shopping, per se, but will make you feel happy and satisfied. • Get a good’s night sleep the night before. Thanks to all that food in your belly it shouldn’t be too hard to fall asleep. The Day Of Thanksgiving Day Sales: • Know exactly the time that the stores you want to hit are open, and go to the store that has the best deals, and/or the gift you want to get the most first. Be there at least a half-hour before it opens if the gift is popular. • Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior. • Be caffeinated and full – don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach. • Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathon-shopping day to grab some grub from the food court. • Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds.

Thanksgiving on a Budget

With the economy still slumping, a lavish Thanksgiving might not be on the table this year. But we can still—and should—feast. We just have to squeeze our fistful of dollars a little harder. Go for What’s in Season When planning your meal, first consult the calendar. This is no time for asparagus and artichokes. Buy produce in season and you will get much more for your money, not to mention livelier flavors. Brussels sprouts are at their peak in late November; farmers’ markets should have them in huge quantities, still on their stalks. (Serving them sliced rather than whole not only makes them more tantalizing but also helps them go further.) Fresh herbs have become available all year round, so it can be a better deal to buy a bunch rather than an expensive jar of the dried kind—fresh sage might be $1.99 compared with $6.50 for half an ounce dried, which could go stale by the next time you need it. Buy a Supermarket Bird In an ideal world we would all be eating heritage turkeys. They have outstanding texture and flavor, and when we buy them, we help preserve unique breeds. But they are anything but a bargain: A 12to 14-pound bird, which feeds eight, from Heritage Foods USA goes for $159 including shipping, or more than $10 a pound. Supermarket turkeys can be fine alternatives for less than $2 a pound. Just be

sure to buy a free-range or organic turkey rather than an industrial one injected with flavored oil. Plus, brining will add flavor and improve texture in even the least expensive birds, all for about $2.29 for a big box of kosher salt, an ingredient that can be used to season the rest of the meal. Start From Scratch Some convenience foods are often ridiculously cheap, loaded as they are with high-fructose corn syrup and chemicals, yet they rarely taste better than homemade. To cut costs and ensure the tastiest of feasts, make your own piecrust, cranberry sauce and gravy rather than opening up a box or can. Instead of paying $8 for a single loaf from an artisanal bakery, bake up some dinner rolls with yeast, butter and flour for a little over $7. A bakery-bought pecan pumpkin pie can go for upwards of $50, but a homemade version will run you $15 — and $5 less if you omit the pecans. Know When to Buy Canned or Frozen Some canned and frozen foods are fine alternatives to fresh. Canned pumpkin is one of the great American ingredients and the generic brands are as good as premium labels. You could make a pie using a fresh cheese pumpkin for $5, but you would wind up with a more watery filling than one made from a $2.49 can. And frozen vegetables can be both superior to and cheaper than out-of-season fresh ones; a bag of Cascadian Farms flash-frozen baby peas is $2.69, compared with $3.99 a pound or more for fresh snow peas, the only kind you are likely to find in November. Don’t Be a Slave to a Recipe If you don’t want to spring for three kinds of herbs in your soup or stuffing, choose one. Or none. Nothing but salt and pepper is ever really indispensable. Substitute water for canned stock in a soup; use a slurry of flour and water to thicken your pan gravy rather than making turkey stock. Instead of investing in a can of shortening for a piecrust, substitute butter for the two tablespoons needed in the recipe. The great thing about Thanksgiving is that the whole really is much more than the parts. Cut corners where you have to and all

Sugar Coated Pecans

Ingredients: 1 egg white 1 tablespoon water 1 pound pecan halves 1 cup white sugar 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon   DIRECTIONS:  Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Grease one baking sheet. In a mixing bowl, whip together the egg white and water until frothy. In a separate bowl, mix together sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add pecans to egg whites, stir to coat the nuts evenly. Remove the nuts, and toss them in the sugar mixture until coated. Spread the nuts out on the prepared baking sheet. Bake at 250 degrees F (120 degrees C) for 1 hour. Stir every 15 minutes.

Katy ISD’s tradition of increasing student participation and strong performance on Advanced Placement (AP) exams continues as the district recently learned that each one of its six high school campuses showed an increase in the number of students participating in the exams. In addition, every high school campus exceeded the state and national percentage of AP students making a qualifying score of 3 or better on the exams. Katy ISD is among the 388 U.S. public school districts (one of only 23 in Texas) to be listed on the 2011 College Board AP Achievement List. This list identifies districts that simultaneously achieved increases in access to AP courses while maintaining or improving the rate of students earning a score of 3 or better on the exams – the score that generally qualifies a student for college credit. In May 2011, more than 3,000 Katy ISD students took more than 7,200 AP exams, with 79 percent of the exams earning a score of 3 or better. This reflects a 24 percent increase from 2010 in the number of exams earning these high scores. Advanced Placement and PreAP courses are designed to challenge students beyond grade level academic courses and prepare them for success in future advanced coursework. Katy ISD recognizes that support and encouragement from the campus, the teacher, and parents are critical to student success. Therefore, the district follows an inclusive enrollment model for AP and PreAP courses that provides support systems for student success. Katy ISD offers AP courses in English, mathematics, science, social studies, fine arts, computer science and languages other than English. sports Bear Creek Baptist - Upward Basketball and Cheerleading

Bear Creek Baptist Church is offering Upward Basketball and Cheerleading for K-8th Grade. Cost is $75. They will have one hour of practices a week and on Saturdays they will have a game for an hour. Every practice and game takes place on our Campus. It is a great place where they will learn new skills for the game and cheer. Registration started in October. Our first evaluation will be Saturday, November 5th, from 10:30 AM -1:30 PM in our Gym on the Sonic side of our Church. The following week, we will have more evaluations, Mon., Tues and Thurs., Nov. 7th, 8th and 10th between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Each child is needed to attend during one of these times. CY-FAIR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 2011 Mobility Forum

Chamber members and non-members are invited to participate in the discussion on how the region addresses mobility challenges in the face of continued growth. There will be two sessions with a luncheon in between. The featured speaker is Commissioner Ned J. Holmes. Holmes is a commissioner of the Texas Transportation Commission, which oversees statewide activities of the Texas Department of Transportation. Additional forum speakers will be: Steve Clark, PE, ARUP; Mark Ellis, Gulf Coast Rail District and Texas State Representative Allen Fletcher. Currently, the chamber is working with the Texas Department of Transportation on the re-designation application process of U.S. 290 to an interstate status. The status change could possibly allow additional federal funds toward the proposed improvements of U.S. 290 along with allowing greater visibility for domestic and international firms seeking to relocate in the Cy-Fair Houston market sector. In addition, the construction of the SH 99; Segment E (I-10 West to U.S. 290) has begun with an anticipated completion over the next 18-24 months. Once completed, Segment E will allow an alternative route for commuters and businesses along U.S. 290 traveling to the West Houston Energy Corridor. The Mobility Forum will be Thursday, November 3rd from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress. Individual tickets are $60 and sponsorship tables of 10 range from $600 to $2,500. Living Word Lutheran Church in Katy is pleased to announce that Lisa Jastram of Sugar Land, TX, has joined the staff as the 9:30 AM contemporary worship leader. Jastram is no stranger to the Katy area having performed in many of the area churches, libraries and schools with Oasis for Children, her educational entertainment venture. She comes to Living Word at an exciting time in the life of the church as they complete their Envision Project begun less than a year ago. The church has been installing new lighting, screens, projectors and systems upgrades to maximize possibilities for meaningful and exciting worship. Sept. 25th was the first Sunday for the congregation to experience the new amenities. One of Jastram’s goals were to make the service more intergenerational and family friendly. She also hopes to see more of the arts incorporated into worship including dance and visual arts. Previously, Jastram has led the musical portion of worship at St. Martin’s Lutheran in Sugar Land, New Hope Lutheran in Missouri City and Grace UCC in Alief. Her background as a missionary child raised in Japan matches well with Living Word’s emphasis on global mission.

The Junior High group from Living Word Lutheran Church in Katy held a packing session to prepare school kits to be used in areas of the world where kids are recovering from wars, tsunamis and other strife. Many will be used in refugee camps as kids try to return to school. The kits are distributed by Lutheran World Relief to the needy in 43 countries. Another packing session will be held in January.
