Grand Lakes News CONTACT PCMI AT 281-870-0585 TO GET YOUR NEWSLETTER. The time has come for us to soon say farewell to 2010. And personally speaking, what a year it has been for friends, family and myself. So much was gained and for some of us - much more was lost. But we must reflect upon our life experiences these past 365 days and find something positive to take with us into 2011. One thing remains certain - the power of prayer truly performs miracles. When I reached my lowest this year, the one true thing that helped my situation was prayer. I’m not the religious type and over-preacher about God’s teachings, but the power of prayer is amazing. And when others lift their hands, bow their heads and press their hands together for the higher power above us, He does listen. We may not be given what we desire, but we’re guided. This holiday season, remember those who’ve helped guide you and count them in your prayers and blessings each day. There are those who abandoned

you and do pray for them as well that they learn the path of selflessness. I wish you a very Merry Christmas. May all the joys of this holiday season be yours! Share your thoughts with me at: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com.
KEEP YOUR Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community, even if you feel your pet is harmless. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in Grand Lakes, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Healthy Holiday Eating Who says you’ll gain weight during the holidays? Only YOU. You can avoid the extra pounds tempting you to overeat this holiday season with one simple tool: will power. Do check out these tips as you maintain - or even lose - weight these next few weeks: Eat before you go to a party. This is one of the best tricks to avoid overeating at gatherings. Add fiber rich foods (ex. 100% whole wheat) to whatever you eat so you’ll feel full. Plus, eating fruit will help curb that sweet tooth. Get up and move! Saying you’re too busy is not an explanation - it’s an excuse. You can exercise inside and outside the home - hit the gym, walking/running, tennis, bootcamp, yoga, jump rope, biking, anything. Most cable/dish networks even offer a fitness channel. Get moving. No excuses!

Pre-cut your foods. Pre-cut your foods to turn 1 piece into 2, 3 or more pieces. Your plate looks fuller meaning you have enough food and won’t crave seconds. One tortilla chip can be broken into 4 or more pieces to avoid eating too many and dipping too much. Keep a food journal. Write down everything, starting NOW, that you eat. Review your entries daily and see what needs to be added and taken out of your diet. Don’t bring it home. Tempted by chips? Cookies? Pumpkin pie? Don’t buy it when at the market. Even better - avoid those aisles when shopping for food.
Beat the Holiday Blues Check out these few tips on how to beat the holiday blues and be happy! • Be realistic. Some people experience not enough family, fun, and friendship so be kind to yourself. • Create your own traditions. As families change and grow, traditions change, too. As long as you do the traditions with a joyful heart, the celebrations you create will become your family’s cherished rituals. • Help others. It is the best antidote to self-pity and seasonal sadness. Find someone who is struggling more than you are, lend them a helping hand and remember the real meaning of the holidays. • Seek sacred space. Visit a place of worship. Simply sitting in a sacred space can remind you of the true meaning of the holidays. • Take care of your body. Eat well, drink plenty of water, exercise and get plenty of rest. The littlest bit of movement will lift your spirits and reducing the amount of junk food, sugar and alcohol you consume will reduce your blues.

• Be financially responsible. Overspending during the holidays will not only increase your stress now, but will also leave you feeling anxious as you struggle to pay the bills. Buck the holiday system of excessive gift-giving and practice simplicity, creativity and basic human kindness. • Grieve. If a friend or family member has recently died, honor their memory. Create an altar with pictures of those you love; light candles every night for someone you have lost; play sacred music and allow yourself to cry, remember, heal. • Forgive. Forgive all sorts of people this holiday season. Read the stories of who have used forgiveness to move mountains. If they can do it, so can we. • Love... everything. Love it all. From the corny Christmas music to the house guests who won’t leave. Love even the hard times; even the cranky and crooked people of the world; even yourself, with all of your imperfections.
• Out of sight is out of mouth. Hide away indulgent puddings, cream and other temptations in the salad drawer, so they don’t beckon every time you open the fridge door. • Brazil nuts are rich in selenium, which improves mood and reduces anxiety. Eat just 3 a day. • If you’re used to working out, have a vigorous session the day before a feast and you’ll burn extra calories more efficiently. • Cinnamon balances blood sugar and reduces ill effects of sweet foods. Stir a little into tea or coffee. • Watch portion sizes like a hawk. Forego the extra spoonful, the second mince pie, never pile food high. Enjoy everything, say no to nothing - but do it all in moderation. • At the supermarket, avoid huge ‘bargain’ packs of special nuts, biscuits etc. Buy smaller sizes and cut the temptation. • Serve two vegetables with each meal (try not to smother them in cream sauce) and put salad greens in every sandwich.
Eat THIS, not THAT for the Holidays! ‘Tis the season of over-indulgence in rich, delicious and unhealthy food. But panic not. You can still enjoy all the goodies of the season, thanks to sensible eating. Here are healthy eating tips for the Christmas season. • Feast for a couple of days, then return to normal. Buy less and don’t let the holiday season turn into an excuse for a month of bingeing. • Cut up a box of mini-sticks of celery and nibble on them when you need a snack. Celery keeps blood pressure low, and helps lower cholesterol too. • Keep reading the labels, but don’t be fooled. Are ‘lite’ potato chips or crisps really a great health option? Yes, you could save a worthwhile 20 calories on a packet - but they’re still a high-fat food, so go easy.

Pet Poops/You Scoop When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!
Stop That Barking! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.
Grand Lakes Dog Park! Grand Lakes welcomes you and your four-legged friend to the community dog park. The park is located in the southeast corner of Grand Lakes: from south Fry Road go south on Rainwood Park Drive, left at Central Park (Grand Brooks Lane), left on Emily Park, left on Grandwood Lane, then right on Calico Crossing. The park and parking lot is on your right toward the end of the street.

PET LOST AND FOUND SERVICE FOR GRAND LAKES GL resident Lisa Lambert has been providing this service since 2002 with great success. The more people who know about it the easier it is to reunite pets with their owners. If you have lost or found a pet call her at: 281-392-5792. If there is no answer, please leave a message. This service expedites the reunion of pets and their owners. If you’ve found a pet, you must be willing to hold on to it until an email alert is sent and the owner has time to come forward. There are many new residents unfamiliar with this service. Please spread the word to your new neighbors to get on the alert list. This is all about neighbors helping neighbors. Please write GrandLakes4Pets@ aol.com for more information and to get onto the mailing list. Many, many thanks to all the wonderful neighbor’s who’ve helped lost pets return to their homes. 5 steps to a happier healthier pet 1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet. Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are waiting to go to their forever home. “Unleash Our Hearts” The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is seeking partners across the country for donations in rebuilding their facility, which was destroyed by hurricane Katrina. The Katy community was overwhelmingly instrumental in supporting families that were displaced after Hurricane Katrina through the support of Katy ISD, local businesses, various community organizations and churches. We are, once again, given the opportunity to “unleash our hearts” and be a part of the rebuilding of Louisiana SPCA. The website www.la-spca.org provides information regarding the Come Stay Heal Capital Campaign. Donations can be made online or checks made payable to Louisiana SPCA Capital Campaign, 701 Thayer Street, New Orleans, LA 70114. Parks, Town Square and Common Areas in the Community In the community of Grand Lakes, there are several common areas for the residents to enjoy. These common areas are restricted to residents for individual and family use and for community events. It is important that we do not abuse these areas with events other than the activities mentioned. The homeowners association maintains all of these areas so if there is any damage to these areas the community pays for it. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community beautiful.

How Can We Teach Our Children the Value of a Dollar? Techniques for teaching children the value of a dollar include providing an allowance, encouraging children to save a portion of their allowance, chipping in a percentage of savings as “interest,” helping children to establish a bank account, and establishing a lending agreement, with interest, when children want to borrow money from you. Start teaching your children at a young age that money is earned by working and that you should spend less than you earn. To help them understand what it’s like to get paid on a schedule, you may want to begin paying an allowance. Then help your children set goals for how they spend and save their allowance. It’s important, however, to make sure that you stick to the payment schedule; otherwise your lessons about financial responsibility may be undermined. Experts differ on whether or not allowances should be tied to household chores. Although many people say children will learn more about personal responsibility if they are not paid for pitching in around the home, others feel it teaches them valuable lessons about working and earning. Instill the Saving Habit You should also encourage your children to save a portion of their allowance for a special goal, even if they’re just putting money in a piggy bank each week. As they save money, you might reward them with a small additional amount, just like a bank pays interest. At the end of each month, calculate how much your children have saved and then chip in a certain percentage as interest. To reinforce your discussions about saving, you might also consider plotting a visual chart of their savings so they can easily monitor their financial progress. Most community banks will allow children to open first accounts with low minimum deposits. Some even have accounts especially marketed to kids to make the learning process fun. Make sure that your children receive an online or printed statement so they can see the progress of their savings efforts, as well as the interest that accrues. Borrowing and Compounding When your children want something that they can’t quite afford, discuss the value of saving versus borrowing. If you do extend credit, use a written IOU, establish a repayment schedule, and charge interest. By doing this, you’ll be teaching them about financial responsibility. As your children get older and perhaps take on part-time jobs to earn more money, their savings will likely amass at a quicker rate. This is an ideal time to review the lesson of compounding, or the ability of earnings to build upon themselves over time. Explain how compounding can be more dramatic over time; the longer money is left alone, the greater the effect. This can lead into a discussion about investing and risk - how certain investments with a greater ability to compound over time may also entail greater short-term risks. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” So remember that answering your children’s questions honestly and in terms they’ll understand can help them begin life on sound financial footing.

Record Sales at Griffin Elementary Book Fair Students and their families spent a record $35,273 at the Scholastic Book Fair held in the Library. Griffin’s share of the sales was $8,800. This win-win fundraiser means students have great books to read and school has additional funding. Librarian Mitzie Cross plans to spend the extra cash on: organizing three authors to meet students at school; more books for the Library; accelerated reader tests and prizes; and new technology equipment. Whole families had the opportunity to shop together in Griffin’s library, as the school was celebrating Grandparents week.

SUPER BOWL COMES TO GRIFFIN ELEMENTARY
Over 200 5th graders played in Griffin’s 5th annual Super Bowl. The large crowd of families, teachers and fellow students enthusiastically supported the football teams. Since the beginning of term MGE’s P.E. coaches have taught students the rules, team positions, strategy and tactics. Excitement about the game has been building for weeks. Enthusiastic teams of boys and girls hustled on and off the field, called their own plays and enjoyed participating in a thrilling competition. The boys’ Green Giants and the girls’ Orange Crush teams were victorious. But the day was really about celebrating sport, teamwork and having a blast. The fabulous half time performance by 5th grade teachers and the Beckendorff Jr. High cheerleaders added to the fun. As did the Griffin Grizzly bear mascot acting as the assistant referee. Griffin is one of only two Katy elementary schools to host a Super Bowl. It’s a major undertaking and Griffin would like to thank Richmond Bone and Joint, Ozarka and PTA volunteers.

KEYS Mentoring
One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child. To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

The Christmas Revels: Musical Theater in Celebration of the Winter Solstice The darkest time of the year casts a powerful spell over nearly every culture in the northern hemisphere, and has given birth to countless ways of celebrating the winter solstice. A keepsake booklet containing information about the Bavarian celebrations and songs featured in the show is included with the ticket. Don’t miss this heartwarming event and join in with our nationwide family of returning Revels fans. PACK 542 HONORS THOMAS PARK WITH A TREE FOR ARBOR DAY Thomas Park in Old Katy will be a little more colorful this fall thanks to efforts of the Cub Scouts of Pack 542. The Scouts spent a sunny Sunday afternoon planting a tree in honor of Arbor Day. Not only will the tree planting help beautify Thomas Park, but it helped the Scouts develop a sense of community involvement and giving back through service to the community. The kids put some effort into life and they will see the benefits down the road, especially when they return to visit the Park after many years.

adults with disabilities. The bike rally or BW15 provided residents with a fun, inclusive bike ride. Some Brookwood residents rode tandem bikes with volunteers from the churches. Others rode independently on either regular or specially modified bikes. Church members from the Katy 3rd and 4th wards, two congregations from the south Katy area, provided food and drinks for the participants. The LDS volunteers also came to support the residents with cheering and encouragement. After the bike rally, the Katy churches provided a carnival with games and activities for the residents at the Brookwood community. This event was part of a broader Houston-wide “Day of Service” in which many Houston area Latter-day Saint congregations participated. The Brookwood community is located in Brookshire, Texas and provides an educational environment that creates meaningful jobs, builds a sense of belonging and demands dignity and respect for adults with disabilities. Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. The next training will be in January. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy. org. RUOK Program
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Acad-

PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Fort Bend County “Leash Law”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

U.S. FLAG ETIQUETTE
[Submitted by Bill Royer, ARC Member] Those of us who have a flagpole on our property from which to fly the U.S. Flag should keep in mind key points of U.S. Flag etiquette, which we may have forgotten amid today’s maddening pace of life. Distilled from the U.S. Flag Code, at www.ushistory.org: The U.S. Flag, a representative symbol of a living country, should be treated as a living thing and cared for as such; • The U.S. Flag should never touch anything beneath it, including the ground; • The U.S. Flag traditionally is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset; • The U.S. Flag must be properly illuminated if flown at night; • The U.S. Flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously; • The U.S. Flag should not be displayed on days when weather is inclement; (except if it is made of all-weather material); • If a State flag is also to be flown from the same mast, the U.S. Flag must be equal to or larger than the State flag; the U.S. Flag must always be at the top on the same halyard or raised first and lowered last if flags are on separate halyards. • The flag for any country is a source of pride and inspiration for the people. It deserves a certain amount of respect. The flag should be properly folded and cared for when not flown. • When proclamation by The President or Governor is given for the U.S. Flag to be flown at half-mast, the flag is first hoisted to the peak, then lowered to half-mast for the day. At the time for lowering, the flag is first raised to the peak and then lowered, (The exception is Memorial Day: The flag is flown at half-mast only until noon. At noon, the flag is again raised to the top and lowered at end of day).
