Grand Lakes News CONTACT PCMI AT 281-870-0585 TO GET YOUR NEWSLETTER. Love indeed conquers all. If you’re angry, be so lovingly. If you’re irritated, express so lovingly. If you’re lonely, accept love from someone who so sincerely wishes to love you. It is so easy to get caught up in buying gifts for Valentine’s Day. But why not share and express your love each day and not just on Valentine’s Day? I’ve realized many things about our emotions and it is thanks to a Bollywood movie titled “Dhadkan.” This movie is about a man whose family is filled with back-biters and a wife who is forced to marry him unwillingly. He is a big businessman and does all things with sincerity and love. He is fully aware of what is happening behind his back, yet he still handles everything with love, never breaking into a sweat. His unhappy wife confronts him and tells him of all the deception and all the backstabbing and his response? “I know all of this. It’s nothing new, but I feel everything can be handled beautifully with love.” Does she start loving him? Well, rent the movie and find out for yourself. (subtitles are available) And with this movie summary, all issues and dilemmas can be handled in life when handled with love and care. Food for thought this Valentine’s Day. Share your thoughts with me at: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com.

Rose Color Meanings You may gift your Valentine with roses. Did you know that each rose color has a different meaning? Check it out: • Red Red roses are the traditional symbol for love and romance and a time-honored way to say “I love you.” The red rose has long symbolized beauty and perfection. A bouquet of red roses is the perfect way to express your deep feelings for someone special. • Pink As a symbol of grace and elegance, the pink rose is often given as an expression of admiration. Pink roses can also convey appreciation as well as joyfulness. Pink rose bouquets often impart a gentler meaning than their red counterparts. • Yellow The bright, sunny color of yellow roses evokes a feeling of warmth and happiness. The warm feelings associated with the yellow rose are often akin to those shared with a true friend. As such, the yellow rose is an ideal symbol for joy and friendship. • White White roses represent innocence and purity and are traditionally associated with marriages and new beginnings. The white rose is also a symbol of honor and reverence, and white rose arrangements are often used as an expression of remembrance. • Orange With their blazing energy, orange roses are the embodiment of desire and enthusiasm. Orange roses often symbolize passion and excitement and are an expression of fervent romance. A bouquet of orange roses will send a meaningful message. • Lavender The unique beauty of the lavender rose has captured many hearts and imaginations. With their fantastical appearance, lavender roses are a perfect symbol of enchantment. The lavender rose is also traditionally used to express feelings of love at first sight.

RECYCLING NEWS FOR GRAND LAKES HOME OWNERS Did you know that you can recycle your GLASS jars and bottles, along with any STYROFOAM? Our community recycling company, Best Trash, accepts glass and styrofoam! It takes approximately 1 MILLION YEARS for glass bottles to decompose and Styrofoam containers - over 1 MILLION YEARS! Let’s ALL try to recycle - with curbside pick-up so there are no more excuses!
Recycling Centers near you! The Ft. Bend County Recycling Center in Rosenberg (just 10 miles away), accepts glass/bottles, Styrofoam and other items. Visit the Ft. Bend Co. government website for information: www.co.fort-bend.tx.us. Also, check out Green Arrow Recycling located in Katy, west of Katy High School. Green Arrow accepts paper, plastics, aluminum, electronics, cardboard and other recyclable materials and welcome residential drop offs. Visit www.greenarrowrecycling.com for more information. For students seeking a volunteer opportunity, setting up a recycling program with your school is a great idea!
Pet Poops/You Scoop When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

KEEP YOUR Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard) must be on a leash. For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in Grand Lakes, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Stop That Barking! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, antibarking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

PET LOST AND FOUND SERVICE FOR GRAND LAKES GL resident Lisa Lambert has been providing this service since 2002 with great success. The more people who know about it the easier it is to reunite pets with their owners. If you have lost or found a pet call her at: 281-392-5792. If there is no answer, please leave a message. This service expedites the reunion of pets and their owners. If you’ve found a pet, you must be willing to hold on to it until an email alert is sent and the owner has time to come forward. There are many new residents unfamiliar with this service. Please spread the word to your new neighbors to get on the alert list. This is all about neighbors helping neighbors. Please write GrandLakes4Pets@aol.com for more information and to get onto the mailing list. Many, many thanks to all the wonderful neighbor’s who’ve helped lost pets return to their homes. 5 steps to a happier healthier pet 1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet. Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are waiting to go to their forever home. Please check out their website at txlabrescue.org.

“Unleash Our Hearts” The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is seeking partners across the country for donations in rebuilding their facility, which was destroyed by hurricane Katrina. The Katy community was overwhelmingly instrumental in supporting families that were displaced after Hurricane Katrina through the support of Katy ISD, local businesses, various community organizations and churches. We are, once again, given the opportunity to “unleash our hearts” and be a part of the rebuilding of Louisiana SPCA. The website www.la-spca.org provides information regarding the Come Stay Heal Capital Campaign. Donations can be made online or checks made payable to Louisiana SPCA Capital Campaign, 701 Thayer Street, New Orleans, LA 70114. For questions and comments, please contact: Laura Maloney, Chief Executive Officer Louisiana SPCA, 701 Thayer St., New Orleans, LA 70114, PH: 504-368-5191, ext. 200. Email: laura@la-spca.org. Parks, Town Square and Common Areas in the Community In the community of Grand Lakes, there are several common areas for the residents to enjoy. These common areas are restricted to residents for individual and family use and for community events. It is important that we do not abuse these areas with events other than the activities mentioned. The homeowners association maintains all of these areas so if there is any damage to these areas the community pays for it. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community beautiful.

Home: Where the Business Is A 2007 Census Bureau survey showed that more than half of all business owners run their company out of a home. And today, that may be on the low side, given recent advances in mobile and wireless technology, as well as the cost-cutting realities of a low-growth economy. If you’re considering running your business out of your home, there are a number of considerations you’ll want to take into account. Is It Legal? The first issue you’ll need to address is making sure your home business meets zoning regulations and that any required licenses or permits are obtained. Many municipalities and condominiums restrict home business activities. If customers will come to your home, you need to consider parking, disability access and display of advertising. You may need to amend your homeowner’s insurance policy to cover commercial activities. Technology The significant advances in Internet technology and home office equipment have made working from home realistic, but there are technology issues you should consider. Find a local support person you can rely on to resolve systems issues quickly and effectively should the need arise. Save your work often, back up your files regularly and make sure you have an alternative should your computer suddenly crash. Since high-speed access to the Web is a necessity for most home businesses, check with your local phone and cable company to see what’s available. Taxes If you operate a business out of your home, the IRS may allow you to deduct certain expenses -- such as phone, Internet hookup, a portion of your rent or mortgage - based on the percentage of space in your home that the office occupies. To qualify, the home office must be used exclusively for business; a guest room or other shared space will not qualify. The key to claiming any of these deductions is to prove that they are necessary for and confined to business use. Living Considerations You should also consider how the work-at-home arrangement will fare from your family’s perspective. Will there be tension if you’re home all day? Will your presence cramp your family’s daily activities? How will your family interact with clients or employees? Many former work-at-homers cite family conflicts as the reason working

Many people need the social outlet that an office environment provides and may be uncomfortable spending long hours alone.

RAE Gives Back - Kids Helping Kids Students at Roosevelt Alexander Elementary (RAE) had the opportunity in December to help other students with just one simple act of kindness. RAE adopted Dodson Elementary in Houston’s Third Ward. Over 500 students who attend Dodson every day live below the poverty level with household incomes of less than $5,300/annually. RAE Principal Kristin Harper said, “The children in our community are so fortunate. We wanted to bless children who are less this holiday season.” The response from RAE students and their families was overwhelming. Hundreds of shoes, coats, clothing items and backpacks were collected for the Dodson students. Additionally, boxes and boxes of school supplies and books were also donated to the school. RAE volunteers quickly realized they needed a U-Haul truck to deliver all of the items! “Our goal was to teach our students the importance of giving back. Our kids amazed us with their willingness to give and then give some more! It was an awesome experience,” says PTA President Debbie Kallina. The students of Dodson were astounded when the volunteers along with Principal Harper opened the back of the U-Haul revealing the many donations. “They couldn’t believe it all that was for just them,” explains Mrs. Kallina.

KEYS Mentoring
One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child. To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

Global Arm, Inc. and Teens Exercising Extraordinary Success (T.E.E.S.) hosted the inaugural Katy Tween Teen Talent Showcase Competition on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at Zo-ca-lo Lounge (510 Mason Road). Contestants from Katy ISD and Ft. Bend County ISD entered the competition. Along with their parents, they networked with many recording industry professionals and received valuable advice on career paths, personality, stage presence and business matters. Lunch was provided courtesy of Chick-fil-A (369 South Mason Road). Music industry packages containing valuable information regarding publishing, copyright, promotions and marketing were given to each contestant. Two of the contestants performed original numbers and the others treated the audience to covers by Carrie Underwood, Selena Gomez, Etta James and Jamie Fox. Vocal ability wasn’t the only surprise of the day - two of the contestants performed their numbers by playing the guitar. The 1st place winner of the showcase was Ms. Reagan Douglas, of Katy, TX. Ms. Douglas performed a song she wrote entitled, Till The End (dedicated to Cancer victims), with her guitar; 2nd place winner was Ms. Skyler Sadler (Katy, TX) who performed At Last by Etta James; and the 3rd place winner was Ms. Kaitlyn Wright (Katy, TX) who performed Change by Carrie Underwood. Each winner received a trophy, courtesy of Katy Trophies. 2nd and 3rd place winners received a Chili’s Gift Card, courtesy of Don McGill Toyota. The 1st place winner won a package valued at over $16,000 which consisted of a complimentary studio session at Music World Studios (courtesy of Matthew Knowles), a complimentary photo shoot (courtesy of Jamie LeBlanc Photography), a featured song on Coast 2 Coast Mix tape hosted by Wildman Teddy T (courtesy of Star Quality Entourage) and a featured song on the upcoming film soundtrack starring Snoop Dog (courtesy of Vision World Entertainment). Door prizes were given away between performances where audience members won gift cards from Chuy’s Restaurant, Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Red Oak Grill, and Perry’s Restaurant. Additional gift cards were given away from Salt Grass Steakhouse and Carino’s (courtesy of Don McGill Toyota). T.E.E.S. will continue to host future events to raise funds for a Teen Community Center in Katy Texas, as well as expand their Teen Table Talk program to other neighborhoods around Houston. Individuals or companies interested in donating may do so by visiting the website at www.teeskaty.com. Local businesses, companies and corporations may elect to offer their support by sponsoring any of our fundraising events. Teens Exercising Extraordinary Success (T.E.E.S.) is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c) (3) organization and donations to the organization are tax deductible to that extent allowed by law.

The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish

Colonel (Ret) Mike Mastranglo, Commander, VFW Post 9182, addresses the local boy scouts, veterans and the public. Members share their memories from World War II. Many can be heard from the audience reciting the words from President Roosevelt’s address on December 8, 1941, from memory, as the recording is being played for all in attendance. Others share their memories of military service during World War II and their thoughts about visiting the USS Arizona Pearl Harbor Memorial in Hawaii after the war.
PEARL HARBOR REMEMBERED AT VFW Fifteen hundred (1,500) civilians perished on this day, December 7, 1941, known as Pearl Harbor Day, in the premeditated invasion against the United States by the Japanese. There was wide spread fear in the United States, as the US was caught virtually unprepared and paid a horrific price. President Roosevelt addressed the Congress the next day and rallied the American people. Four years later the United States received an unconditional surrender and World War II ended in 1945. World War II stretched from 1940 to 1945. There are 405,399 recorded deaths and 670,846 wounded. Totaling 1,076,845 dead and wounded. Photos taken by Rodney Smith, VFW Photographer

LIBRARIES ANNOUNCE ADDITION OF FAMILY READING CLUB THIS WINTER
The popularity of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Summer Reading Clubs for children, teens and adults has inspired the library system to add a similar program for families during the winter season. The Family Reading Club began on Saturday, January 21, 2012 and will continue for six weeks through March 3, 2012 at all branches in the Fort Bend County library system. This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who read 36 books or 6 hours – 6 books per week or 60 minutes per week – will be entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 5, 2012. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 20, 2012. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time.

Adult Conversation Group
Real conversation is not a contest but makes room for many voices whose tone is not violent or abusive but instead as Michael Oakeshott said “humble and conversable.” It offers “the gift of the interval:” when we “look around upon the world without the sense of an enemy at one’s back or the insistent pressure to make up one’s mind.” If you enjoy real conversation about current issues and events with a group having diverse backgrounds and perspectives, join us for a cup of coffee on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in room 303 of the Parish Activity Center from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. All participants are encouraged to offer topics for the group and approximately a week before the meeting, a tentative agenda of topics will be disseminated. For further information or to get on the agenda email list, please call Gary at 281-578-1036 or email conversation11@comcast.net.
