Grand Lakes News A new year, a new beginning a new you. The holidays will have come and gone and we all gained new experiences in 2011 that we will have reflected upon on December 31, 2011. As hard as it may sound, we must move forward and simply close our eyes and cherish the memories created in the last year. But why is it so hard to let go? It is hard to let go because we have invested our everything into something or someone and cannot imagine it or them going away. Time heals everything. Let go and let God. More than any piece of advice in the new year, surround yourself with positivity. Avoid those who are judgmental and exhibit no empathy, for these individuals will only bring you down further during your down days. We make resolutions each new year, only to break them a few weeks down the road. Let’s remind ourselves that resolutions are commitments and promises. By breaking your resolutions or not fulfilling your goals set in the new year, you’re breaking promises and falling short on your commitments. We also write down on paper to volunteer more, only to realize 6-9 months down the road we didn’t do a single charitable thing. Begin with becoming a mentor for at risk youth. I guarantee this: it will forever change how you view life. There’s so much more that we must learn to improve about our habits, our ways and our attitudes. But it starts with one simple step: look in the mirror and be the change you wish to see in the world. Share your thoughts with me at: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com.

281-617-2231 Popular New Year’s Resolutions for 2012! Check out some New Year’s resolutions that are popular year after year. • Drink Less Alcohol • Get a Better Education • Get a Better Job • Get Fit • Lose Weight • Manage Debt • Manage Stress • Quit Smoking • Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle • Save Money • Take a Trip • Volunteer to Help Others

Lose Weight the Healthy Way! While there is no “one size fits all” solution to permanent healthy weight loss, the following guidelines are a great place to start: • Think lifestyle change, not short-term diet. Think about weight loss as a permanent lifestyle change - a commitment to your health for life. Various popular diets can help to jumpstart your weight loss, but permanent changes in your lifestyle and food choices are what will work in the long run. • Find a cheering section. Social support means a lot. Seek out support - whether in the form of family, friends, or a support group - so that you can get the encouragement you need. • Slow and steady wins the race. Aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week to ensure healthy weight loss. Losing weight too fast can take a toll on your mind and body, making you feel sluggish, drained and sick.

2

When you drop a lot of weight quickly, you’re actually losing mostly water and muscle, rather than fat. • Set goals to keep you motivated. Short-term goals, like wanting to fit into a bikini for the summer, usually don’t work as well as goals like wanting to feel more confident or become healthier for your children’s sakes. When frustration and temptation strike, concentrate on the many benefits you will reap from being healthier and leaner. • Use tools that help you track your progress. Keep a food journal and weigh yourself regularly, keeping track of each pound you lose and inch of your waist lost. By keeping track of your weight loss efforts, you’ll see the results in black and white, which will help you stay motivated.

Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Legacy It’s difficult to sum up the contributions of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. in a single day, but it is, nevertheless, a positive thing that America has an official holiday to honor his accomplishments and vision. This special commemoration is generally celebrated on the third Monday of the month of January. In 2012, this commemoration will take place January 16th. The purpose of Martin Luther King Day is to mark the tremendous legacy of an American who fought for freedom, racial equality, justice and peace, never espousing his goals with hatred or violence. He endured many difficulties with amazing courage and worked with the hope of bringing people together in unity. Observations vary from state-to-state, in that some states close schools to honor the holiday, while others still hold classes, but mark the day with special programs, lessons, activities and the like. Special activities are held throughout the country to celebrate Dr. King’s life and contributions.

Pet Poops/You Scoop When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

KEEP YOUR Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard) must be on a leash. For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in Grand Lakes, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

Stop That Barking! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

Grand Lakes Dog Park! Grand Lakes welcomes you and your four-legged friend to the community dog park. The park is located in the southeast corner of Grand Lakes: from south Fry Road go south on Rainwood Park Drive, left at Central Park (Grand Brooks Lane), left on Emily Park, left on Grandwood Lane, then right on Calico Crossing. The park and parking lot is on your right toward the end of the street.

PET LOST AND FOUND SERVICE FOR GRAND LAKES GL resident Lisa Lambert has been providing this service since 2002 with great success. The more people who know about it the easier it is to reunite pets with their owners. If you have lost or found a pet call her at: 281-392-5792. If there is no answer, please leave a message. This service expedites the reunion of pets and their owners. If you’ve found a pet, you must be willing to hold on to it until an email alert is sent and the owner has time to come forward. There are many new residents unfamiliar with this service. Please spread the word to your new neighbors to get on the alert list. This is all about neighbors helping neighbors. Please write GrandLakes4Pets@ aol.com for more information and to get onto the mailing list. Many, many thanks to all the wonderful neighbor’s who’ve helped lost pets return to their homes. 5 steps to a happier healthier pet 1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet. Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are waiting to go to their forever home. Please check out their website at txlabrescue.org.

Ask Your Neighborhood Planner By Craig Narum CFP®, Grand Lakes resident “Full Nest” Finances: Considerations When Supporting Adult Children Say so-long to the days of “empty nesters,” when parents would make life changes once their children had moved out and moved on. It is more likely that parents today are dealing with a “full nest.” It is estimated that 85% of this year’s college graduates are planning to head back to live with mom and dad. And a study in 2010 by researchers at Columbia University using the U.S. Current Population Survey found that 52.8% of 18 - to 24-year-olds were living at home, up from 47.3% in 1970. The study also showed that one-inseven young adults is emerging from their teenage years with no pathway to financial and economic independence. For parents it can be trying. While it’s important to respect the independence of full-grown children, it’s not that easy when they are exercising that independence under your roof. What’s more, it can also be a drain financially. Food, heating, gas, electricity and many other daily expenses can be a lot higher when they include another mouth or two. If you find yourself with a full nest, here are a few tips to help make ends meet: Make a budget. Tracking what you spend and comparing it with a monthly plan will help you to identify where the money is going and where you can cut back. It can also show what costs are truly shared and what ones relate to specific family members. Share the common costs. Most live-at-home adult children are there for a reason, often due to lack of a job or inability to afford a place of their own. But that does not mean they should not shoulder a portion of household expenses. Work out a realistic rent or costsharing arrangement and stick with it. Separate the individual costs. Is your live-at-home son or daughter a finicky eater? Do they demand certain foods or sundries that you would not buy otherwise? Then let them pay for them. They’ll learn to appreciate what their tastes are actually costing and avoid resentments on your part.

Share the chores. Assigning chores and responsibilities may seem obvious, but often it’s overlooked, leaving mom and dad to do all the work. Garbage, lawn, housework - make it clear to all who is responsible for what task. Don’t make it too comfortable. If your goal is to eventually nudge your fledglings out of the nest, you need to provide incentive. That means not treating them as permanent guests, but as temporary live-at-home adult children, with obligations and responsibilities of their own. In the end, they will appreciate it as much as you.

RECIPES Slow Cooker Spicy Black-Eyed Peas

Texas Brisket INGREDIENTS: 3 1/2 fluid ounces liquid smoke flavoring 1/4 cup ketchup 1 (10 fluid ounce) bottle steak sauce, (e.g. Heinz 57) 1 (3 pound) beef brisket DIRECTIONS: Line a shallow roasting pan with aluminum foil. Place the brisket on the foil. Stir together the steak sauce, liquid smoke and ketchup. Pour half of the mixture over the brisket, then turn the meat over and pour sauce over the other side. Wrap tightly in a double layer of aluminum foil. Refrigerate for at least 24 hours. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Let the roast stand at room temperature while the oven preheats to take off some of the chill. Bake for 6 or 7 hours in the preheated oven. You can leave it in even longer if you turn the oven down to 200 degrees F (95 degrees C). Remove brisket from the oven and slice across the grain. Return to the roasting pan and serve with sauce. KEYS Mentoring

One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child. To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

Families campaign Last year, our Katy ISD community supported 265 Katy ISD students and their families by raising over $13,000. Coordinating Food for Families is always a tremendous blessing for us here in Partners in Education. We hope to share that joy with you.

Firethorne Leads the way as KEYS Platinum Sponsor Firethorne has committed to Katy ISD’s Partners in Education (PIE) as the first KEYS Scholarship Platinum Sponsor for 2011. As a KEYS sponsor, Firethorne is helping to create scholarships for students who have participated in KEYS through their senior year. This is the first year that PIE has opened sponsorship levels for KEYS, with 100 percent of the sponsorship dollars going directly to KEYS Scholarships. Former KEYS student Eduardo Reyes and his KEYS mentor Jim Burns visited Firethorne representatives last week to thank them for their generous support. The KEYS (Keep Encouraging Youth toward Success) mentor program is offered to Katy ISD students who are on the brink of success. Often, these students have been challenged by life circumstances outside of their control. Mentors meet with their students on campus each week during the school year, in between the school day. When Reyes’ mentor first met him, it wasn’t with the intent of becoming his mentor, it was with the intent of helping him organize his backpack, locker and life. After several weeks of helping Reyes get organized, Burns naturally fell into the role of becoming his mentor. For the next six years, Burns helped Reyes recognize his gifts, talents, intelligence and encouraged him to pursue his dreams. Firethorne, a 1,400-acre residential community in Katy/Fulshear, is actively involved with Katy ISD through programs such as Junior Achievement and the Partners in Education annual Promise to Read and Food for Families programs. Firethorne is located near the crossroads of I-10 west and FM 1463. KEYS’ annual event Ties & Tiaras, hosted at Agave Road on March 1, 2012, will celebrate mentors while supporting the KEYS Scholarship Fund. Featuring student performances throughout the come-and-go event, the 2012 Mentors of the Year will also be announced. KEYS is brought to you by Partners in Education, the department that brings the community into the classroom. For more information about KEYS and to find out how you can get involved, visit the KEYS web page at www.katyisd.org, or contact Martha Brown at 281-396-2468.

Demographic Update Shows Continued Growth for Katy ISD

During the October 24th Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Pat Guseman, president of Population and Survey Analysts (PASA), presented the 2011 Demographic Update that shows steady growth for Katy ISD, at a rate of approximately three percent each year over the next five years. While slightly slower than the rapid growth experienced between 2001 and 2009, the report shows approximately 23,000 additional students moving to the district during the next 10 years. The district also announced that as part of the Long Range Facilities Plan process, Katy ISD has entered into the initial stages of the Attendance Boundary Modification (ABM) process. Last November, Katy ISD voters approved a bond referendum that included five new campuses – three elementary schools, one junior high and one high school. Four of the five campuses are set to open in fall 2012 and High School No. 7 is slated to open in fall 2013. Katy ISD is a TEA Recognized district serving more than 62,000 students. Covering 181 square miles west of downtown Houston, Katy ISD is comprised of 53 campuses and with more than 8,000 employees is one of the largest employers in the West Houston area.

GIFTED STUDENTS GET CREATIVE WITH TRASH

treasure at this fun event co-sponsored by KPGT and KISD. Led by professional puppeteer Greg Ruhe from Puppet Pizzazz and professional artist Taylor Perry, the children enjoyed an inspiring and hilarious puppet show before launching into their own creations. The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented (KPGT) organization was formed in 1987. It is a non-profit organization. KPGT aims promote the welfare of gifted and talented students by empowering KISD families and educators with information, resources, tools and voice to ensure opportunities that encourage gifted students’ passion for learning. Further information is available on KPGT’s website at www.kpgt.org.

DO-IT-ALL DADS STEP UP TO VOLUNTEER AT GRIFFIN ELEMENTARY Over 160 fathers have committed to spend a day volunteering at Griffin Elementary as part of the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) initiative. Following a hugely sucessful Pizza With Dad night at school, men eagerly lined up to help. They will be working in carpool lines, science labs, P.E. classes, cafeteria, library, playground and numerous other places around school. Jacki Keithan, MGE Principal said: “Studies by the U.S. Department of Education indicate that positive adult male role models have a uniquely important impact on the development and educational achievements of children. So I’m delighted that so many Griffin fathers have stepped up to the volunteer plate and we’ll be welcoming them throught the coming year.”

Ben Simiskey, Griffin’s first Watch D.O.G. said: “I had a blast being Griffin’s first Watch D.O.G.S. volunteer. I’ve always worked hard to be involved in my two son’s lives. But after spending a full day in their classrooms and around campus, I have a new appreciation for teachers and school staff and I’m even more determined to have a hands-on approach to my children’s education. Research confirms what we all innately know. A father or father figure involved and committed to education helps boost grades and improve reading levels. But the most important benefit of all is the strengthening of family bonds and the expansion of love between dads and their children. I’ll never forget my first Watch D.O.G.S. experience and I already can’t wait for my next day on campus!”

LIBRARIES ANNOUNCE ADDITION OF FAMILY READING CLUB THIS WINTER The popularity of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Summer Reading Clubs for children, teens and adults has inspired the library system to add a similar program for families during the winter season. The Family Reading Club will begin on Saturday, January 21, 2012 and will continue for six weeks through March 3, 2012 at all branches in the Fort Bend County library system. This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who read 36 books or 6 hours – 6 books per week or 60 minutes per week – will be entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 5, 2012. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 20, 2012. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system. For more information, call the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677 or the library branch nearest you.

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. The next training will be in January. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. House of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christcentered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. We have certified F.AM.I.L.Y. Rules Counselors available to assist you. Our volunteers have been screened with background checks and approved by the Fort Bend Juvenile Probation Department. Did you know there is a support group for the Gifted and Talented Program in KISD? The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented is an advocacy organization dedicated to promoting quality educational services for the gifted students in the school district. The mission of the organization is to promote community awareness of the unique social, emotional and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students and to support the development of appropriate educational services to meet these needs. To function successfully as an advocacy organization, KPGT needs membership and volunteer support! Funded by membership dues, KPGT publishes a quarterly newsletter, “Connections” and is now on the web! KPGT advocates for the needs of our GT students by serving on district committees, panels at state GT conferences, the Parent Advisory Board and keeping abreast of legislative issues. KPGT works cooperatively with KISD to co-host events such as the very popular “Super Saturday” and the “Student Summer Scholarship Seminar.” Our non-profit organization offers summer scholarships and grants for innovative programs to the GT teachers in KISD. Won’t you show your support of our efforts and join KPGT today? Visit our website at www.kpgt.org for a printable membership form.

Join us from the beginning as we start to gather members and momentum to spread the word that it IS possible to reduce processed foods, remove flavored milk and increase fresh fruits and veggies. If you believe it is possible to feed school aged children something other than processed chicken nuggets, stuffed crust pizza and chocolate milk then please bring your energy, your ideas and your connections and join us! Our kids deserve the best, after all, that’s why we chose to put them in Katy ISD! For more information: merag94@gmail.com or find us on Facebook: Katy’s Own School Lunch Revolution.
