CONTACT PCMI AT 281-870-0585 TO GET YOUR NEWSLETTER. Me, my, mine. Make this your new motto, your new campaign. We forget about ourselves and get so involved in everyone else’s lives. Ask yourself: who’s looking out for you? Your answer will be “no one.” Put you first and the world will appear much better. Friends and family will find this new selfish campaign (that’s what they will call it) outrageous because they are so used to taking from you. But you must put you first, because no one else will. Remember, your list in life needs to be: 1) me 2) family 3) work. If you are happy, then you’re able to keep family happy, which in turns makes your day productive and positive at work, offering healthy vibes and energy. Yes, it is that easy. Remember your new campaign “ME, MY, MINE.” What I want, when I want it and how I want it! Share your thoughts with me at: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com.

A Brief History of St Patrick’s Day The story of St. Patrick’s Day begins around 385 A.D. with a man named Maewyn, who at age 16, was sold into slavery, which brought him closer to God. He managed to escape slavery and headed to a monastery in Gaul to study, where he adopted the Christian name “Patrick.” For the next 30 years, he traveled throughout the country, setting up monasteries and converting the natives. After his death in 461 (on March 17th), he was declared a saint. So what happened from there? The first St. Patrick’s Day Parade was in America in New York City in 1762, not Ireland, and consisted of Irish soldiers in the English military marching through the city. This was a chance for the soldiers to reconnect with their heritage. Ireland, on the other hand, does not have such a long history of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. This changed around 1995, when the government made a push to use St. Patrick’s Day as a way to drive tourism and to showcase Ireland to the rest of the world. Parades and celebrations are now common in Ireland around this day (in fact, their celebrations last several days) and some one million people took part in last year’s festivities in Dublin.

FREDDY’S PAINTING
When people nowadays think of this day, they get an image of the shamrock in their head. Why? Its origins are rooted in Patrick himself. He used the shamrock as a way to show how the trinity works: three separate elements of the same entity. So wherever you are, whether you’re Irish or not, get out there and enjoy the day!

Pet Poops/You Scoop When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!
KEEP YOUR Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard) must be on a leash. For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in Grand Lakes, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Stop That Barking! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

Parks, Town Square and Common Areas in the Community
In the community of Grand Lakes, there are several common areas for the residents to enjoy. These common areas are restricted to residents for individual and family use and for community events. It is important that we do not abuse these areas with events other than the activities mentioned. The homeowners association maintains all of these areas so if there is any damage to these areas the community pays for it. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community beautiful.

Gifting: A Win-Win Proposition
Did you know that there’s a wealth-transfer technique you can use to reduce your taxable estate and keep more of your assets for your heirs? You can make annual gifts of up to $13,000 ($26,000 per married couple) to as many people as you wish without incurring federal gift taxes. An example: A married couple with three children could reduce their estate by $78,000 each year if $26,000 were given to each of their children. Gifting can be used in a number of unique ways. You can use annual gifts to help build a college fund for a child, grandchild, relative, or even a friend - by contributing to a 529 plan account, a Coverdell Education Savings Account, or a UGMA/UGTA account. In fact, 529 plans have special rules that allow you to make five years’ worth of contributions in one year without incurring any gift taxes - that’s $65,000 for individuals and $130,000 for married couples! Gifts can also be used to build wealth for future generations as well as help a child, relative, or friend fund a down payment on a home, buy a car or start a business. Your Certified Financial PlannerTM advisor can help you determine how annual gifts might fit into your overall financial plan.

TRY HYDROZONING FOR YOUR YARD When two people sit down for a meal, do both eat the same amount of food? Chances are that one eats more than the other. Why? Because each has different needs and requires different amounts of nutrition. A yard is no different. When it comes to water, the shrub areas need a different amount of water than the turf areas. Shrubs or turf exposed to afternoon sun need more water than those protected by the shade. Yet when it comes to watering your yard, most people water everything the same. We put the same amount of water in the turf as we do in the flower beds. We water turf exposed to full afternoon sun the same as we do turf in complete shade. As the cost of water continues to increase, it just makes sense to consider what can be done to avoid wasting it! Separating different plant materials with different exposures so they may be watered independent of one another is called hydrozoning. Since January of 2009, the rules of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality require all new irrigation systems to be hydrozoned. Applying only the amount of water required by the plant material versus watering everything the same can save up to 21,300 gallons of water annually on a typical residential lot. Have your irrigation system evaluated by a W.I.S.E. Guys Licensed Irrigator to determine if you can begin conserving water today by hydrozoning. There is currently a program sponsored by the North Fort Bend Water Authority in concert with the local utility districts (MUDs) to make Free irrigation evaluations available to residents at no charge. The time is now… schedule an appointment today. To find out if your water supplier is participating in this program, visit www. nfbwa.com/wiseguys. Your lawn and your wallet will be glad you did.

After months of early morning rehearsals with music teachers Jason Ritchie and Cynthia Brodt, Griffin Elementary’s 5th grade choir gave a series of fantastic concerts. Packed audiences at school, the senior living community Heritage Grand in Cinco Ranch and shoppers in the Houston Galleria mall were delighted by a glorious medley of songs. Before the school tour bus rolled home students, teachers and parents celebrated their hard work and success on the ice rink. Admittedly some were more graceful than others, but everyone enjoyed the fun.

BECKENDORFF JR. HIGH
GRIFFIN ELEMENTARY PTA BUYS NEW TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT FOR STUDENTS The Griffin PTA has donated $7,000 to help school buy at least 12 ELMOs. Not the cute, red guy from Sesame Street. These are state of the art document cameras, which will be operating in classes throughout Griffin. By being able to project live action images onto a screen, this equipment will help teachers explain concepts and encourage participation. Students will also be able to share their work with classmates. Other benefits are speed, lower administrative costs and it’s more environmentally efficient. No more delays waiting to produce numerous paper copies or overhead slides.

BECKENDORFF JUNIOR HIGH AND KATY JUNIOR HIGH SISTER SCHOOL PROGRAM The Beckendorff Junior High School Student Council sponsored a food drive to benefit the KJH Backpack Buddy Program. BDJH and KJH are sister schools. The sister school program is designed to have two schools in the district work together in ways that both schools benefit from the relationship. The administration and the PTA’s have outlined four events they plan to do together this year involving various groups within the school. Our first event was the PTA Board Breakfast in which the boards from both PTA boards met and shared ideas. Our second event was the food drive ben-

Happy St. Patrick’s Day
This year, in conjunction with the Katy ISD Sister School program, members of the Beckendorff Pep Squad, Cheerleading and Teen Leadership Program, teamed up with Katy Junior High students to stuff teddy bears and tigers, plus create t-shirts of inspiration for each stuffed animal. The stuffed bears and tigers were then donated to children at Memorial Hermann and Texas Children’s Hospitals West Campus here in Katy. Many thanks to these children with big hearts, and to the parents who donated their time to support this project. Beckendorff Junior High and Katy Junior High are the first junior high schools to participate in the Sister School program in Katy ISD and plan to work on future projects together.

KIDS Folk Life Festival
needs fabric
I am collecting fabric and old sheets to make rag dolls at the KIDS Folk Life Festival on March 31st. At the Folk Life Festival we show people how to make rag dolls like they did years ago from scrap fabric. Last year we had almost 4,000 people who wanted to make these dolls but we ran out of fabric. I had no idea it would be such a popular station, so I am starting now asking for fabric donations. If you have any fabric (cotton is the best) or old sheets, let me know and I can come get it from you or you can drop it off at a school near you and I can collect it there. If you would like to volunteer at the folk life festival, please contact me at slbedwards@att.net.
GOLF TOURNAMENTS Talan Holmes Charity Golf Classic Talan Holmes Charity Golf Classic is a Golf Tournament that has one main goal. We are all about providing funds to a group of people who are born with Tebial Hemimelia (TH from here on). TH is a rare malformation, 1:1,000,000 or lack of formation of the Tibia which is the weight bearing bone in the bottom of the leg. This tournament started out to pay the medical expenses of Talan Holmes, the tournament chairman’s son. Talan has undergone his first surgery and is now working with his first prosthesis trying to learn to walk. Many families, like the Holmes family, are unaware of TH and until delivery don’t know that their child has TH. Our goal, while still paying the medical expenses of Talan, is to help other families that may not have the ability to raise their own funds or simply can’t raise enough to get their child the prosthesis that he or she needs. The Golf Tournament is on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the River Ridge Gold Club, 3133 Brazos Oak Lane, Sealy, TX 77474. Registration begins - 6:30 AM, Breakfast - 7:00 AM and Event Start Time - 9:00 AM
Daylight Savings Time Begins...set your clocks ahead one hour on March 11th!

The purpose of the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is to increase exposure of jazz, to extend jazz education for developing musicians and to provide entertainment of the jazz music medium in the Katy and West Houston areas. The Festival’s activities are non-competitive and dedicated to the development and preservation of this truly American art form. The Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is also a uniquely different event for jazz music patrons. All attendees have the opportunity to hear big bands and combos comprised of student jazz musicians throughout the day, as well as featured guitar artists and aspiring music groups, via the component known as the Katy Guitar Fest. Each day then can be completed by attending the Featured Concerts on Friday and Saturday nights by world-renown jazz recording artists. Throughout the day an exhibit of outstanding visual artwork, by area and national artists, known as ARTkaty is on display and provides the opportunity for attendees to view, enjoy, and purchase fine artwork of the highest quality. More information about the featured jazz artists, featured guitar artists, and visual artists can be found on the website: www. WestHoustonJazz.com. When you have reached the website, you can sign up for updates on the artists and latest information pertaining to the Festival and the professional artists! You can also follow the latest “buzz” about the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival on Facebook, a link to which can also be found on the website! Performance participation in the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is open to all student jazz ensembles (big bands and/or combos) at the middle school, junior high, high school and/or college levels. Performance and participation in the Katy Guitar Fest is encouraged for all guitarists of all ages and all genres of music. Registration forms for each of these components are available on the website: www. WestHoustonJazz.com. Student participating ensembles will receive professional constructive comments by renowned professional jazz artists after their performances, as well as participate in individualized instruction on their own musical instruments through “master classes” with the professional jazz artists. Topics and technical studies ranging from jazz interpretation to improvisation to composition and professional pathways in jazz are all included in the master classes. Festival attendees may attend any of the daily performances and art exhibit with the purchase of a daily admission wristband. Shuttle buses will be available, at no cost to Festival attendees, for transportation from the local Katy hotels (which offer reduced rates to Festival participants and attendees) to the Festival and return them to their original point of departure. Daily admission wristbands will be available at the entrance to the Katy High School Performing Arts Center or in the lobby of the following Katy hotels located at the Katy Mills Mall area: Best Western Plus; Hilton Garden Inn; Springhill Suites, by Marriott and the Residence Inn, by Marriott. Admission to the evening Feature Concerts is by ticket only. Tickets can be purchased at the Ticket Window of the Katy High School Performing Arts Center or in the lobby areas of the Katy hotels noted above during the days of the Festival, or in advance from any Katy ISD high school band member, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music or online at www.WestHoustonJazz.com. Please visit the website to receive information pertaining to the dates for ticket sales at a later time. Proceeds from the Festival go to support the jazz education at Katy ISD high schools.

Dr. Amy Vogt
Caring For Pets and the People Who Care for Them
Invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to support this recycling pro-gram and donate their aluminum cans to Keep Kids Connected. Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission. For more information about Keep Kids Connected go to the website, www.keepkidsconnected.org or check out their Facebook page! If you would like to get on the contact list for upcoming events, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com.

KATY TKD ACADEMY’S C3 BOOSTER CLUB COLLECTS TOYS & SUPPLIES FOR TOTS & MARINES Each year the Katy TaeKwonDo Academy’s C3 Booster Club holds several community events that benefit the Katy community. This past holiday season booster club supporters shined in their acts of “Community,” one of the valued “Cs” in the C3 Booster Club name. In December, the C3 Booster Club once again partnered with the U.S. Marines in their Toys For Tots toy drive and this year added a second collection drive - gathering supplies for an active Marine platoon. The generosity of Katy TKD Academy students and C3 Booster Club members was evident as toys mounded in Toys For Tots collection boxes. On “delivery day” Marine representatives joined academy students and staff to celebrate with a photo and a cheer to send off the toys to needy boys and girls.

Civil Air Patrol Cadet Earns Pilot’s License Cadet 2d Lt. Javier Rocha from Katy, Texas, earned his private pilot’s license in December 2011. The seventeen year old cadet first flew in a CAP Cessna as a passenger during an orientation flight in February of 2009. “During that flight, I knew instantly that I had to become a pilot.” His first act after receiving his license, was to proudly take each family member for a ride. Along with this accomplishment, Cadet Rocha has earned the Doolittle Award, a high honor for cadets. He holds a leadership position in the cadet squadron, has attended encampments for training in emergency services and takes an active part in ground team management during squadron search and rescue exercises. His goal after graduating high school is to obtain a commercial pilot’s license, go to college, then to join the Air Force as an officer in flight training. Javier is currently a senior at Cy-Springs High School.

The Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra returns to Katy on Saturday, March 24th, joining with the St. Peter’s United Methodist Church Choir, to present Theodore Dubois’s The Seven Last Words of Christ. The chamber concert begins at 7:30 PM at the church, located at 20775 Kingsland Blvd. The Seven Last Words of Christ provides a musical setting for seven phrases spoken by Jesus Christ while he hung dying on the cross. The phrases, taken from all four Gospels, are often shared in churches during Holy Week to help Christians reflect on the meaning of Good Friday. FBSO will accompany the choir with a smaller chamber orchestra consisting of strings and woodwinds. FBSO is under the direction of Katy resident Dr. Hector Agüero. The St. Peter’s choir is under the direction of David Galasso. General admission tickets are $10 each in advance or at the door. To purchase tickets, visit www.fbso.org or call 281-276-9642.

TEMPLE SINAI
Special Event: Temple Sinai honored fifteen new member families at Friday night Shabbat services on January 20th by calling them up to the bimah for a special blessing by Rabbi Annie Belford. Fort Bend House of Hope - Bringing Healing and Restoration to Hurting Teens and Their Families
House of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christcentered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. We have certified F.AM.I.L.Y. Rules Counselors available to assist you. Our volunteers have been screened with background checks and approved by the Fort Bend Juvenile Probation Department. Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

Fort Bend County “Leash Law”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

Katy Boy Scout receives heroism award Sean Payne of Katy Boy Scout Troop 925 recently received the very prestigious Heroism Award given by the Boy Scouts of America to scouts who have performed heroic acts. On July 10, 2010 Sean dove into a local swimming pool in Katy to pull his one-and-half year old brother Ethan from the the pool after Ethan accidently went down the steps and into water too deep for him to get out without help. Both Sean and brother Ethan were unhurt and Troop 925 are very proud of Sean! .

TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

Planting the Right Tree in the Right Place CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way. Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected. If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line. CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit CenterPointEnergy.com/trees.
