GRAYSON LAKES HOLIDAY CELEBRATION Santa Claus is coming to Grayson Lakes Saturday, December 3rd from 3:00 PM 5:30 PM!!! The Grayson Lakes Holiday Celebration will include: Photos with Santa, Bouncy Slide, cookie decorating, holiday crafts and snacks. Mark your calendars and come join the fun!

2011 HOLIDAY BOAT PARADE This year’s Holiday Boat Parade will be held separately from the neighborhood’s December 3rd Holiday Celebration and will take place over four separate days. Deviating from previous years’ holiday events, this year the Holiday Boat Parade will be held from 6:30 PM until about 7:30 PM on the first two Thursdays and the first two Sundays of December. The parade will not include a contest but will enable spectators increased opportunities to see the lighted and decorated boats. There are about 16 pontoon boats docked in the main lake area and one pontoon boat in the smaller lake on the other side of Lake Grayson Drive by the tennis courts. The boats will parade on Thursday, December 1st; Sunday, December 4th; Thursday, December 8th and Sunday, December 11th. Boats will gather about 6:15 PM on each of the parade days in the Lake Grayson Drive cove and begin parading about 6:30 PM. The boats will then motor completely around the main lake, attempting to go into every cove. Residents will be able to view the parade from a variety of spots – backyards facing the lake, the tennis court area, the Lake Grayson Drive dock and the Recreation Center area. Additionally, if there are weather issues on any of the parade days and the boats are unable to get out then, there will be another parade date. If you have any questions or you are a boat owner who has not already received information about the boat parade, please contact Pam Alloway-Mueller at 281574-3773 or tompam1@aol.com.

ANNUAL MEETING SET FOR December 8 th Please plan to attend the annual meeting of the Grayson Lakes Homeowner’s association on December 8th in the café at Wood Creek Jr. High. This year we will start with a community forum at 6:30 PM where we will invite county and state elected official to speak. At 7:00 PM, we will establish a quorum and begin the actual business of the meeting, which is to elect 3 members for the Association’s Board. It is critical that we have a quorum. If you are not able to attend, be sure to submit your proxy by noon on December 8th. During the course of the meeting, the Budget Committee will describe the 2012 budget, we will hear from the committees that volunteer their time to Grayson Lakes and your Board will respond to questions from residents. Meeting notices will be mailed on November 11th. The notice will include information about announced candidates and a proxy form that you should return to Community Sound if you will not be attending in person. Watch your mailbox for this important announcement. THREE BOARD MEMBERS TO BE ELECTED Long time Board member Becca Patterson has submitted her resignation from the Board effective December 8th. Therefore, we will be electing three Board members this year. Becca has found it increasingly difficult to attend regular Board meetings; however, she does intend to remain active on the Events Committee. Thank you, Becca, for your service to Grayson Lakes. COMPLETING YOUR PROXY If you are not able to attend the annual meeting of the HOA on December 8, 2011, please be sure to send in your proxy. Without

a quorum, we will not be able to conduct business and elect board members. You will receive a proxy with the material you are sent regarding the meeting.

There are four steps to completing your proxy: 1. Name your proxy holder: This can be a friend you know will attend the meeting or you can designate the Secretary of the HOA. The acting secretary will be a board member who is not running for election. 2. Grant authority to your proxy holder: This ranges from just counting your proxy for quorum purposes to granting full authority to vote on all issues. Or, you can instruct the proxy holder to vote for specific Board candidates. 3. Sign the form: It is required that at least one signature be on the form to be valid. All owners of the property should sign when possible. 4. Mail, FAX or hand deliver your completed form to the management company. Grayson Lakes Community Association, Inc. c/o Community Sound, Inc. 22503 Katy Freeway, Ste. 7 Katy, TX 77450 Or FAX your Proxy to: 281-347-8303 NOTE: Your proxy must be received by noon the day of the meeting, December 8th. Time is needed to verify the validity of each proxy.

FIREWORKS REMINDER Several residents have commented how pleasant it was not to worry about fireworks in the community last Fourth of July. We ask that all residents respect their neighbors and honor the deed restriction that prohibits fireworks in Grayson Lakes.

U.S. FLAG ETIQUETTE

[Submitted by Bill Royer, ARC Member] Those of us who have a flagpole on our property from which to fly the U.S. Flag should keep in mind key points of U.S. Flag etiquette, which we may have forgotten amid today’s maddening pace of life. Distilled from the U.S. Flag Code, at www. ushistory.org: The U.S. Flag, a representative symbol of a living country, should be treated as a living thing and cared for as such; • The U.S. Flag should never touch anything beneath it, including the ground; • The U.S. Flag traditionally is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset; • The U.S. Flag must be properly illuminated if flown at night; • The U.S. Flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously; • The U.S. Flag should not be displayed on days when weather is inclement; (except if it is made of all-weather material); • If a State flag is also to be flown from the same mast, the U.S. Flag must be equal to or larger than the State flag; the U.S. Flag must always be at the top on the same halyard or raised first and lowered last if flags are on separate halyards. • The flag for any country is a source of pride and inspiration for the people. It deserves a certain amount of respect. The flag should be properly folded and cared for when not flown.

Grayson Lakes

December 2011

• When proclamation by The President or Governor is given for the U.S. Flag to be flown at half-mast, the flag is first hoisted to the peak, then lowered to half-mast for the day. At the time for lowering, the flag is first raised to the peak and then lowered, (The exception is Memorial Day: The flag is flown at half-mast only until noon. At noon, the flag is again raised to the top and lowered at end of day).

Community Garage Sale Was a Success Once again, the Annual Grayson Lakes Community Garage Sale was a great success. Forty-one (41) registered and participated. It seems as though some of our residents may have decided to participate at the last minute and did not have time to register. If your household falls into this category, that’s OK! We are glad you were able to take part in the event, just don’t forget to mail in your $10. Payments can be mailed to Grayson Lakes, c/o Community Sound, 22503 Katy Freeway, Ste. 7, Katy, TX 77450. Proceeds from the Garage Sale Event help purchase ads, banners and signs as well as support other events throughout the year.

Try On One Of Our Hats Grayson Lakes is a fantastic place to call home. Largely because the Board of Directors and a dedicated group of volunteers work very hard performing a number of behind the scenes tasks that keep this neighborhood running and provide all of the of little extras that make it such a wonderful place to live. Outside of managing vendors and collecting dues, members of the community, who generously give of their time, coordinate everything that happens here in Grayson Lakes. Currently we have a very small number of individuals who wear many hats making it difficult to fully concentrate on any one activity and give it 100% of their attention. Our neighborhood will only improve if we have more people working together. So we are calling for volunteers to fill the following positions in our community. Please read the “classified ads” below and see if there is an area where your talents and abilities can be applied. If so then we urge you to contact trey@communitysound.com and become a Grayson Lakes volunteer. Community Garage Sale Coordinator: This opportunity involves working with the Board to decide on a date for the annual garage sale. Placing ads in local newspapers, putting together an article for the community newsletter/website and procuring and putting out garage sale signs for the actual event. Holiday Decorations Coordinator: This opening involves working within the community’s budget for decorations to purchase holiday wreaths and decorations. Making sure that the decorations from the previous years are in good condition prior to hanging them and then coordinating with the management company and/or recruiting community volunteers to put up and take down the decorations.

Newsletter Administrator: The job of coordination our community newsletter is a monthly responsibility. You will work closely with our Communications Committee and need to maintain a working calendar to keep track of when submissions are due. Prior to that date you should contact the Board and committee chairs asking them to submit articles for the upcoming newsletter, edit them, submit them to the Board for approval and then submit them to the publisher each month. Landscape Committee Chair Person: This person leads the Landscape committee which advises the Board regarding landscape needs and interacts with our landscape vendor to help insure our landscape dollars are spent wisely. Meetings are held every two months so the Committee can discuss needs. The latest Committee project was to develop a plan for replacing plants lost due to recent extreme weather conditions.

Safety and Security Committee Chair Person: The Safety & Security Committee Chair will be the single point of contact for all safety and security items for the community. They will be responsible for hosting meetings, building community awareness and leading the Neighborhood Watch. The Chair will report monthly status to the HOA Board. Examples of responsibilities are communicating suspicious activities to residents, identifying safety and security needs in the community and encouraging residents to join and be active in the Neighborhood Watch.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER • If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

The Christmas Revels: Musical Theater in Celebration of the Winter Solstice The darkest time of the year casts a powerful spell over nearly every culture in the northern hemisphere, and has given birth to countless ways of celebrating the winter solstice. Many of the present-day holiday rituals in our country originate in the Nordic/German traditions and come flavored with the spices of Europe. We invite you to take a little journey to early nineteenthcentury Bavaria and the surrounding regions to explore the roots of modern Christmas.

PACK 542 HONORS THOMAS PARK WITH A TREE FOR ARBOR DAY Thomas Park in Old Katy will be a little more colorful this fall thanks to efforts of the Cub Scouts of Pack 542. The Scouts spent a sunny Sunday afternoon planting a tree in honor of Arbor Day. Not only will the tree planting help beautify Thomas Park, but it helped the Scouts develop a sense of community involvement and giving back through service to the community. The kids put some effort into life and they will see the benefits down the road, especially when they return to visit the Park after many years.

Volunteers and Brookwood Residents enjoy a Bike Rally at the Brookwood Community.

Katy LDS Churches Join with Brookwood Community for Bike Rally On October 16th, Katy congregations from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) joined with the Brookwood Community for a special bike rally and carnival. The Brookwood Community is a residential facility and vocational program for adults with disabilities. The bike rally or BW15 provided residents with a fun, inclusive bike ride. Some Brookwood residents rode tandem bikes with volunteers from the churches. Others rode independently on either regular or specially modified bikes.

This event was part of a broader Houston-wide “Day of Service” in which many Houston area Latter-day Saint congregations participated. The Brookwood community is located in Brookshire, Texas and provides an educational environment that creates meaningful jobs, builds a sense of belonging and demands dignity and respect for adults with disabilities. HOLIDAY Healthy Holiday Eating Who says you’ll gain weight during the holidays? Only YOU. You can avoid the extra pounds tempting you to overeat this holiday season with one simple tool: will power. Do check out these tips as you maintain - or even lose - weight these next few weeks:

CUSTOM HOLIDAY DECORATION DESIGN & INSTALLATION Contract Prices to Put-up and Take-down Each Year

Eat before you go to a party. This is one of the best tricks to avoid overeating at gatherings. Add fiber rich foods (ex. 100% whole wheat) to whatever you eat so you’ll feel full. Plus, eating fruit will help curb that sweet tooth. Get up and move! Saying you’re too busy is not an explanation - it’s an excuse. You can exercise inside and outside the home - hit the gym, walking/running, tennis, bootcamp, yoga, jump rope, biking, anything. Most cable/dish networks even offer a fitness channel. Get moving. No excuses! Pre-cut your foods. Pre-cut your foods to turn 1 piece into 2, 3 or more pieces. Your plate looks fuller meaning you have enough food and won’t crave seconds. One tortilla chip can be broken into 4 or more pieces to avoid eating too many and dipping too much. Keep a food journal. Write down everything, starting NOW, that you eat. Review your entries daily and see what needs to be added and taken out of your diet. Don’t bring it home. Tempted by chips? Cookies? Pumpkin pie? Don’t buy it when at the market. Even better - avoid those aisles when shopping for food.

Eat THIS, not THAT for the Holidays! ‘Tis the season of over-indulgence in rich, delicious and unhealthy food. But panic not. You can still enjoy all the goodies of the season, thanks to sensible eating. Here are healthy eating tips for the Christmas season. • Feast for a couple of days, then return to normal. Buy less and don’t let the holiday season turn into an excuse for a month of bingeing. • Cut up a box of mini-sticks of celery and nibble on them when you need a snack. Celery keeps blood pressure low, and helps lower cholesterol too. • Keep reading the labels, but don’t be fooled. Are ‘lite’ potato chips or crisps really a great health option? Yes, you could save a worthwhile 20 calories on a packet - but they’re still a high-fat food, so go easy. • Out of sight is out of mouth. Hide away indulgent puddings, cream and other temptations in the salad drawer, so they don’t beckon every time you open the fridge door. • Brazil nuts are rich in selenium, which improves mood and reduces anxiety. Eat just 3 a day. • If you’re used to working out, have a vigorous session the day before a feast and you’ll burn extra calories more efficiently. • Cinnamon balances blood sugar and reduces ill effects of sweet foods. Stir a little into tea or coffee. • Watch portion sizes like a hawk. Forego the extra spoonful, the second mince pie, never pile food high. Enjoy everything, say no to nothing - but do it all in moderation. • At the supermarket, avoid huge ‘bargain’ packs of special nuts, biscuits etc. Buy smaller sizes and cut the temptation. • Serve two vegetables with each meal (try not to smother them in cream sauce) and put salad greens in every sandwich.

"Doing business from the same location since 1978"

It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child. To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

KISD Receives Top Rating in Schools FIRST Financial Accountability Rating System Katy ISD has earned a rating of Superior Achievement under the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Katy ISD has received this top rating for each of the nine years that Texas districts have been rated through Schools FIRST. Schools FIRST is a statewide rating system created to ensure that school districts are held accountable for the quality of their financial management practices, while achieving improved performance in the management of their financial resources. The Schools FIRST accountability rating system assigns one of four ratings, with the highest being Superior Achievement, followed by Above Standard Achievement, Standard Achievement and Substandard Achievement. Approximately 784 out of the 1,029 school districts in Texas received the Superior Achievement rating this year. Katy ISD also recently announced that it has been named a Five-Start District in the Texas Comptroller’s Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST) – one of only 23 districts in Texas to receive this rank for two consecutive years.
