The Website for Green Trails Phase II (www.greentrailstwo.com) has a “blast email” function. This feature allows the Association to send news to residents on a mass basis. The Board of Directors intends to start utilizing this function more frequently to disseminate important information, particularly in emergencies like Hurricane Ike.

GREEN TRAILS TENNIS NEWSLETTER

PARENTS: Tweens and teens have been observed damaging our tennis courts and the equipment held within. Your maintenance fees pay for this vandalism directly. We try to keep these costs down while maintaining the nice amenities our neighborhood enjoys for all residents. Please let your children know if they are observed abusing our courts and/or their equipment, the Constable will be called to escort them home.

Should you notice anyone abusing our courts, please contact the constable at 281-463-6666 and report it.

Please note: tennis courts are for tennis only. Please let your children know that the courts are not for soccer, bike riding, skating or any other use. We want to keep our courts and amenities in good condition for the use they are intended for.

Ladies Fall leagues are in play and those times are reserved on the sign up sheet on Monday and Wednesday mornings, 9 am-12:30 PM. If you are interested in playing ladies tennis, we can offer you a spot on league teams at the B level (Monday) or A and B levels (Wednesday). The Tennis Committee has approved court reservations for these times. Each league level is currently looking to add new resident players. If you are interested in joining a ladies league, please contact Elaine Kearney - number is below.

Anyone, including tennis pros, wanting to reserve REGULAR court time in advance, must contact the committee through Elaine Kearney, 281-492-6848.

Sign-up boards are located inside the tennis courts. Residents may sign up 48 hours in advance for a 1 1/2 hour time period (this means 3 blocks on the sign-up sheet). Should you sign up too early or for longer than 1 1/2 hours, your name will be subject to removal by a committee member. Also, remember to keep the gates locked at all times. Please do not prop open our gates, this damages the locking mechanisms.

If you are a new resident and need access cards, please contact Karen Janczak at Crest Management, 281-579-0761. ONLY Green Trails residents should have access cards for the courts; please do not give extra cards to friends. Crest Management will be notified if non-residents have cards. You must have a card to access the tennis courts. If someone requests that you allow them entry to our courts, please do not allow anyone access that does not have a card.

If you see that the brooms or water-remover rollers are lying on the court, we ask that you please make an effort to hang those in order to preserve them.

Please be considerate and pick up any trash you have left on the court.

A Green Trails resident who is a USPTA certified tennis pro is available for private or semi-private lessons at the Green Trails courts for residents only.

The tennis committee requests you book your lessons by signing up for the court 48 hrs. in advance during non-prime hours. (No evening lessons or weekend mornings). If interested, contact Laurence Sombito directly at 281769-2701 for more information.

The lights at the Gerri Ayers Recreation Center are numbered. Should you notice a light out on the court, please note the number before calling to have it repaired. Tennis court lights are on a timer. To turn on the lights, flip the switch to the “ON” position; lights will come on within 15 minutes. If the lights have been on and then turned off, it will take the lights 15-20 additional minutes to come back on. This one switch controls lights on all courts.

Expedited ARC Approvals

Remember to apply and get ARC approval before doing work that affects the exterior appearance of your house or yard. This includes replacing fences, repainting (even the same color) and re-roofing. Approval can take up to one month, so plan ahead. In many cases, you can now expedite the process by paying a $50 fee. Suspicious Activity?

Call the Constable and report any suspicious activity. The fastest dispatch for law enforcement in our neighborhood is to call the constable direct at 281-463-6666. An alert Green Trails resident recently foiled a car theft by calling the constable when something didn’t seem right. The suspects were arrested. Remember, “No call is too small.”

How Do We Look?

Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house.

Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up.

Cars parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better, and is safer for your neighbors and your car.

Green Trails Ladies Club Welcomes You

The Green Trails Ladies Club welcomes you as a friend and invites your membership. Membership is open to women residing in west Houston, Katy and surrounding areas. Varied opportunities are provided for women to explore common interests and to develop friendships in the neighborhood settings. Three Cheese Chicken Bake

1/4 cup chopped onion 1/4 cup chopped green pepper 1 tbs and 1-1/2 tsp butter or margarine 1/2 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup, undiluted 1/2 (8 ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained 1/2 (2 ounce) jar chopped pimientos, drained 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 (8 ounce) package noodles, cooked 1-1/2 cups diced cooked chicken 1 cup ricotta or cottage cheese 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons buttered bread crumbs In a skillet, sauté onion and green pepper in butter until tender. Remove from the heat. Stir in the soup, mushrooms, pimientos and basil; set aside.

In a large bowl, combine noodles, chicken and cheeses; add mushroom sauce and mix well. Transfer to a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish.

Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees F for 40 to 45 minutes or until bubbly.

Sprinkle with crumbs. Bake 15 minutes longer.

4 large baking potatoes, baked 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon paprika 1/8 teaspoon pepper 8 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled 1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese 1/2 cup sour cream 4 green onions, sliced

Cut potatoes in half lengthwise; scoop out pulp, leaving a 1/4-in. shell (save pulp for another use). Place potatoes skins on a greased baking sheet.

Combine oil, Parmesan cheese, salt, garlic powder, paprika and pepper; brush over both sides of skins. Bake at 475 degrees F for 7 minutes; turn.

Bake until crisp, about 7 minutes more. Sprinkle bacon and cheddar cheese inside skins. Bake 2 minutes longer or until the cheese is melted. Top with sour cream and onions. Serve immediately.

GARDENING TIPS FOR FEBRUARY

FLOWERS • Plants to set: Alyssum, Calendula, Canterbury Bells, Carnations, Columbine, Cornflower. Daisies, Delphinium, Hollyhock, Larkspur, Lobelia, Nicotiana, Pansy, Petunia, Phlox (Louisiana), Shrimp Plant, Snapdragon, Stock and Verbena.

VEGETABLES • Plant beets, broccoli (plants), brussel sprouts (plants), cabbage (plants), carrots, cauliflower (plants), celery, Chinese cabbage (plants), chives collards (plants), endive, kale, lettuce (leaf and head), mustard, onions (plants), parsley, garden peas, radishes, rutabagas, spinach, tomato (seeds) and turnips.

TREES AND SHRUBS • Finish all transplanting, get everything in the ground for a good spring spurt of growth. Transplant balled and burlap, container-grown, bare-root deciduous evergreen trees, shrubs, roses and vines while still dormant.

• Finish pruning roses. Weed and cultivate lightly all beds. Replenish mulch as needed.

• Control early spring insects like thrips on glads and aphids on young tender growth. Spray with Malathion, Diazinon or Orthene.

• At the end of February: peach, apple and pear fruit must be thinned to insure quality production at harvest.

• Give groundcovers a haircut. They will spread faster.

• Divide daylilies, daisies and other perennials now.

Katy ISD Police Santa Cops Program

The Pattison Elementary Student Council collected money to buy gift items for the Katy ISD Police Santa Cops Program. The money collected sponsored 10 kids. On Dec. 3, 2011 they met at Target and purchased 1 outfit for each child (pants, shirt, shoes and jacket) and spent the rest on fun items for the kids. All toys were then wrapped and delivered to The KATY ISD police station for pick up by parents.

On February 2, 2012, Fashion Extravaganza will be held at Taylor high School as a fundraising for Taylor’s Project Grad 2012. This will be the 6th Annual Fashion show, as well as a market with many vendors promoting substantial savings on their products and services. The James E. Taylor Swimming and Diving Team participated in the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association Gulf Zone Championships on November 18 and 19, 2011 at the Conroe ISD Natatorium. The men’s team took fifth place and the women’s team took ninth place out of 37 teams. Drs. James Jacobs and Nicolas Manriquez, of Your Total Foot Care Specialist, are pleased to announce, two $1,500 “Stepping Into The Future” scholarships for 2012 KISD graduating seniors. Applications must be submitted to the offices of Your Total Foot Care Specialist by March 29, 2012, 5:00 PM. A third party committee will select the two winning applicants.

The “Stepping Into The Future” scholarship program is available to seniors graduating with GPA’s ranging from 2.5 to 3.7. The scholarships are geared towards those students showing academic promise through a combination of demonstrated academic achievement and leadership potential. The two “Stepping Into The Future” scholarship recipients will be announced at the Katy ISD Awards Ceremonies during May.

KEYS Mentoring

One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child.

OTHER DATED EVENTS Houston Fire Fighters Making Houston the City with the Biggest Heart FOR MDA

It’s official, Houstonians through the Houston Fire Fighters raised a record breaking $509,961 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association making them the #1 Fill-the-Boot department in the country for the last 9 out of 10 years raising more than $6.3 million during that time.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-the-Boot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will also be out March 10th, April 14th and May 12th to collect funds for the campaign.

The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas.

Keep Kids Connected

Valentine Card Making event on February 4th in the afternoon at Bonnie Holland Elementary. Last year the event was put together by a few moms in a playgroup and over 50 people showed up and they raised almost $2800. This year they are moving to a bigger venue and hope to have more children making cards for the kids at MD Anderson.

LDS and Catholic Churches Presented Annual Christmas Concert

The combined choirs of Epiphany Catholic Church and the Katy Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints presented their annual Christmas concert on Sunday, December 11th, at Epiphany Catholic Church. This marked the 18th annual Christmas combined concert.

Over one hundred singers performed and were led in traditional Christmas pieces by Debbie Siebert and Jennie Larsen, both from the LDS Katy Stake. JM Mercado, the music minister from Epiphany Catholic Church, conducted a contemporary choir and also directed the production. A children’s choir was also led by Amy Millet. Organist Merle Vahlkamp accompanied the choir along with a bell choir, a string quartet and various percussionists.

Monsignor Jack Dinkins gave opening remarks and Katy Stake President John Allen gave remarks near the end of the program.

LIBRARIES ANNOUNCE ADDITION OF FAMILY READING CLUB THIS WINTER

The popularity of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Summer Reading Clubs for children, teens and adults has inspired the library system to add a similar program for families during the winter season. The Family Reading Club began on Saturday, January 21, 2012 and will continue for six weeks through March 3, 2012 at all branches in the Fort Bend County library system.

This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate.

Families who read 36 books or 6 hours – 6 books per week or 60 minutes per week – will be entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 5, 2012.

A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 20, 2012. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time.

From September through May, there are monthly luncheons (normally third Wed of each month, except November) and numerous monthly activities for all ages and abilities (e,g., bridge, mah jong, bunco, bowling, beading, book club, play reading, sewing and crafts, movie and lunch bunch, creative cooking, wine tastings - just to name a few).
