GIVE AN HOUR™ NETWORK PROVIDES FREE COUNSELING TO TROOPS AND FAMILIES

Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/ uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-8551982 or log on to www.banyancounseling.com, (click Military Families link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area.

LA-FUNDACION.NET

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that about 220 million tons of old computers and other technology hardware are trashed in the U.S. every year. At the same time, 43% of US households do not have a computer at home. This huge disparity is commonly referred to as the Digital Divide. La-fundacion.net in partnership with community organizations throughout Texas, is trying to bridge the gap by placing donated computers in the hands of those who do not have access to technology. La-fundacion.net collects donated computers that once refurbished, upgraded and loaded with legal copies of Windows are provided to organizations like The Women’s Home of Houston, churches, community centers or directly to Public School Children who do not have a home computer in partnership with Public Schools such as Houston’s Hamilton Middle School. Recycling your old computer or other electronic equipment is a great way to help those who cannot afford access to technology, but it can also help keep the environment free from dangerous pollutants and can even mean a few extra dollars in your pocket at tax time. Next time you upgrade your computer, your cell phone, etc, consider donating your old equipment to lafundacion.net. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas... THE HISTORY OF CANDY CANES By Brenna Hall

So, you buy candy canes for the kids or for the decorations every year but do you really know where they come from? The candy cane is a Christmas tradition that many hold dear but nobody really knows why. Let’s face it -- the only things we really know about candy canes is that they taste good and that they are red and white. Whether the story of the candy cane is a legend or if it is true is not certain, but this is how the story goes: About two hundred-thirty years ago at the Cologne Cathedral, the children that went to church there were really loud and noisy. They often moved around and would not pay attention to the choirmaster. This was especially difficult for the choirmaster when they were supposed to be sitting still for the long living Nativity ceremony. So to keep the children quiet, he gave them a long, white, sugar candy stick. He couldn’t give them chocolate or anything like that because the people at that church would think it was sacrilegious. So he gave them the stick and he bent it on the end to look like a cane. It was meant to look like a shepherd’s cane, and so it reminded the children of the shepherds at Jesus’ birth. In 1847, a German-Swedish immigrant in Wooster, Ohio put candy canes on his Christmas tree and soon others were doing the same. Sometime around 1900 candy canes came to look more like what we know them as today with the red stripes and peppermint flavoring. Some people say the white color represents the purity of Jesus Christ and the red stripes are for the wounds he suffered. They also sometimes say

Hearthstone

that the peppermint flavoring represents the hyssop herb used for purifying and spoken of in the Bible. The shape also looks like the letter “J” for Jesus, not just a shepherd’s cane. It is possible that these things were added for religious symbols, but there is no evidence that is true. Around 1920, a man in Georgia named Bob McCormack wanted to make candy canes for his family and friends. He later started mass-producing candy canes for his own business which he named Bob’s Candies. This is where many of our candy canes come from today.

CHRISTMAS-THE DIET DESTROYER

In terms of holidays, Thanksgiving, the day spent by many gobbling down a week’s worth of calories in one sitting, is widely considered to be the mother of all diet wreckers. The good news however, is that once the dinner does come to a close, so does the bulk of the over eating. Sure, you may indulge in a leftover helping of stuffing or two (it always tastes better the day after, doesn’t it?), but you probably won’t stuff yourself to the point of pantunbuttoning again. Christmas, on the other hand, is a stealthier diet destroyer. Though there is also a main meal, it is the lead up – all those holiday parties - that causes the most damage. The punch bowls of eggnog, the plates of Christmas cookies, it’s tough not to be tempted. Keep your family’s holiday spirit high, but your waistlines low, with these easy ways to keep your diets on track: Know Your Trigger Foods There are certain kinds of food that get even the most dedicated dieters every time. Once they start, they just can’t seem to stop, no matter how strong their willpower appears to be. Some constantly crave sugar. For

A man about to commit suicide during the holidays because he’s financially ruined is stopped by an angel who shows him what life would be like if he’d never existed. It’s a charming movie — part romance, part pathos and a celebration of life. miraCle oN 34th street In this sweet 1947 movie, a Macy’s executive tries to find a new store Santa. She hires an old man named Kris Kringle who claims to be the one-and-only Santa Claus. Of course, such claims can get you into trouble and Kris ends up being hospitalized for some kind of delusional disorder. Hope comes in the form of a young man who wants to help Kris prove that he is really and truly Santa.
