L-R: Local Wold War II veterans Johnnie Reuther, Navy Aviation; Norris Miertschin, Army; and Paul Zanfardino, Navy, are recognized for their service at the Pearl Harbor Commemoration Ceremony.

PEARL HARBOR REMEMBERED AT VFW Fifteen hundred (1,500) civilians perished on this day, December 7, 1941, known as Pearl Harbor Day, in the premeditated invasion against the United States by the Japanese. There was wide spread fear in the United States, as the US was caught virtually unprepared and paid a horrific price. President Roosevelt addressed the Congress the next day and rallied the American people. Four years later the United States received an unconditional surrender and World War II ended in 1945. World War II stretched from 1940 to 1945. There are 405,399 recorded deaths and 670,846 wounded. Totaling 1,076,845 dead and wounded. Photos taken by Rodney Smith, VFW Photographer

The Pearl Harbor Remembrance ceremony was led by Colonel (Ret) Mike Mastrangelo, Commander, VFW Post 9182. Commander Mastrangelo stands next to the World War II section of the newly renovated military museum, which is open to the public, located on George Bush Drive, in Katy, Texas. Colonel (Ret) Mike Mastranglo, Commander, VFW Post 9182, addresses the local boy scouts, veterans and the public. Members share their memories from World War II. Many can be heard from the audience reciting the words from President Roosevelt’s address on December 8, 1941, from memory, as the recording is being played for all in attendance. Others share their memories of military service during World War II and their thoughts about visiting the USS Arizona Pearl Harbor Memorial in Hawaii after the war.

Second Saturday Aluminum Can Collection - If you live in the Houston Area, please consider participating in our “Cans for a Cure” Recycling Program. The second Saturday of each month, Keep Kids Connected collects aluminum beverage cans at the Tradition Bank Pin Oak Branch location from 9 am-12 pm. The proceeds from recycling the cans helps fund the purchase of Netbook computers and pediatric cancer research. Invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to support this recycling pro-gram and donate their aluminum cans to Keep Kids Connected. Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish

is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission. For more information about Keep Kids Connected go to the website, www.keepkidsconnected.org or check out their Facebook page! For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-theBoot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will also be out March 10th, April 14th and May 12th to collect funds for the campaign. The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas. In addition to the performance of their robot in head-to-head timed competition, other elements the teams are judged on are their research project and presentation, robot design and programming, and FIRST Core Values. As First and Second Place Champions, both the “RoboRangers” and “CRypton” will be moving on to the next phase of FLL competition. Throughout the competition process, FLL robotics teams deal with real-world application of science and math concepts, hands-on problem solving as well as honing research and presentation skills. This Katy qualifying tournament, one of 570 held around the world, was the first step in the regional robotics competition process, which culminates in the Southwest (Texas/New Mexico) FLL Championship Tournament. The winning team from the Southwest Championship participates in the 2011 FLL World Festival.

TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL Taylor hs FASHION EXTRAVAGANZA On February 2, 2012, Fashion Extravaganza will be held at Taylor high School as a fundraising for Taylor’s Project Grad 2012. KEYS Mentoring

One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child. To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

Music industry packages containing valuable information regarding publishing, copyright, promotions and marketing were given to each contestant. Two of the contestants performed original numbers and the others treated the audience to covers by Carrie Underwood, Selena Gomez, Etta James and Jamie Fox. Ms. Douglas performed a song she wrote entitled, Till The End (dedicated to Cancer victims), with her guitar; 2nd place winner was Ms. Skyler Sadler (Katy, TX) who performed At Last by Etta James; and the 3rd place winner was Ms. Kaitlyn Wright (Katy, TX) who performed Change by Carrie Underwood. Scott has been active with Compassion Katy for more than 5 years, leading many projects and is an incredible asset to Katy ServeFest. This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who read 36 books or 6 hours – 6 books per week or 60 minutes per week – will be entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 5, 2012. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 20, 2012. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system.
