RECIPES Texas Brisket INGREDIENTS: 3 1/2 fluid ounces liquid smoke flavoring 1/4 cup ketchup 1 (10 fluid ounce) bottle steak sauce, (e.g. Heinz 57) 1 (3 pound) beef brisket DIRECTIONS: Line a shallow roasting pan with aluminum foil. Place the brisket on the foil. Stir together the steak sauce, liquid smoke and ketchup. Pour half of the mixture over the brisket, then turn the meat over and pour sauce over the other side. Wrap tightly in a double layer of aluminum foil. Refrigerate for at least 24 hours. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Let the roast stand at room temperature while the oven preheats to take off some of the chill. Bake for 6 or 7 hours in the preheated oven. You can leave it in even longer if you turn the oven down to 200 degrees F (95 degrees C). Remove brisket from the oven and slice across the grain. Return to the roasting pan and serve with sauce.

One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child.

Firethorne Leads the way as KEYS Platinum Sponsor Firethorne has committed to Katy ISD’s Partners in Education (PIE) as the first KEYS Scholarship Platinum Sponsor for 2011. As a KEYS sponsor, Firethorne is helping to create scholarships for students who have participated in KEYS through their senior year. This is the first year that PIE has opened sponsorship levels for KEYS, with 100 percent of the sponsorship dollars going directly to KEYS Scholarships. Former KEYS student Eduardo Reyes and his KEYS mentor Jim Burns visited Firethorne representatives last week to thank them for their generous support. The KEYS (Keep Encouraging Youth toward Success) mentor program is offered to Katy ISD students who are on the brink of success. Often, these students have been challenged by life circumstances outside of their control. Mentors meet with their students on campus each week during the school year, in between the school day.

When Reyes’ mentor first met him, it wasn’t with the intent of becoming his mentor, it was with the intent of helping him organize his backpack, locker and life. After several weeks of helping Reyes get organized, Burns naturally fell into the role of becoming his mentor. For the next six years, Burns helped Reyes recognize his gifts, talents, intelligence and encouraged him to pursue his dreams. Firethorne, a 1,400-acre residential community in Katy/Fulshear, is actively involved with Katy ISD through programs such as Junior Achievement and the Partners in Education annual Promise to Read and Food for Families programs. Firethorne is located near the crossroads of I-10 west and FM 1463. KEYS’ annual event Ties & Tiaras, hosted at Agave Road on March 1, 2012, will celebrate mentors while supporting the KEYS Scholarship Fund. Featuring student performances throughout the come-andgo event, the 2012 Mentors of the Year will also be announced. KEYS is brought to you by Partners in Education, the department that brings the community into the classroom. For more information about KEYS and to find out how you can get involved, visit the KEYS web page at www.katyisd.org, or contact Martha Brown at 281-396-2468.
Community Education
Community Education offers evening and on-line classes to adults for fun, enrichment and learning. Some of the classes offered are Foreign Languages, Arts and Crafts, Finance, Computer, Sewing, Dance and Music. For information on these and many other classes and to view the fall schedule, go to www.katyisd.org/com_edu or call 281-396-6365.
Demographic Update Shows Continued Growth for Katy ISD
During the October 24th Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Pat Guseman, president of Population and Survey Analysts (PASA), presented the 2011 Demographic Update that shows steady growth for Katy ISD, at a rate of approximately three percent each year over the next five years. While slightly slower than the rapid growth experienced between 2001 and 2009, the report shows approximately 23,000 additional students moving to the district during the next 10 years. The district also announced that as part of the Long Range Facilities Plan process, Katy ISD has entered into the initial stages of the Attendance Boundary Modification (ABM) process. Last November, Katy ISD voters approved a bond referendum that included five new campuses – three elementary schools, one junior high and one high school. Four of the five campuses are set to open in fall 2012 and High School No. 7 is slated to open in fall 2013. Katy ISD is a TEA Recognized district serving more than 62,000 students. Covering 181 square miles west of downtown Houston, Katy ISD is comprised of 53 campuses and with more than 8,000 employees is one of the largest employers in the West Houston area.

281-391-SOLD (7653) www.lizcarter.com Our Family Serving Your Family Since 1976 Cinco Ranch Students “Scare Away Hunger” Members of the Future Business Leaders of America at Cinco Ranch High School decided they would take a stand in the fight against hunger instead of trick or treating this year. The group spent their Halloween collecting nonperishable foods for needy families in the Katy Independent School District for the annual “Scare Away Hunger” campaign. The students, led by sponsor John Bryan, split into six groups and hit the pavement asking their neighbors to donate canned foods to their project. Under the direction of club co-presidents Ashley Ramsey and Selena Ibeig, the group collected 1,369 cans for their local chapter.
The response was phenomenal and group members say they exceeded their expectations. The students gathered at the Red Oak Grill on Mason Road in Katy on the evening of Halloween to drop off and package the goods. They also enjoyed a nice meal and held a costume contest, judged by the restaurant‘s employees. Later, they counted and transferred the cans into boxes and loaded them into two big trucks to be delivered to Katy Christian Ministries. Group members say they are happy to do their part to assist the local food banks that are already stretching their resources to meet growing demands in a weak economy.

Each bag contains a book, a bib, a special certificate, a list of suggested

reading for children and information on parenting and on library services. These bags represent the library system’s commitment to providing library services for county residents throughout their lives, beginning at birth. Families of Fort Bend babies born at other locations during Children’s Book Week should call the Youth Services department, at 281-3412634, to receive their book bag.
LIBRARIES ANNOUNCE ADDITION OF FAMILY READING CLUB THIS WINTER
The popularity of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Summer Reading Clubs for children, teens and adults has inspired the library system to add a similar program for families during the winter season. The Family Reading Club will begin on Saturday, January 21, 2012 and will continue for six weeks through March 3, 2012 at all branches in the Fort Bend County library system. This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who read 36 books or 6 hours – 6 books per week or 60 minutes per week – will be entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 5, 2012. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 20, 2012. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time.

Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines
www.budgetblinds.com
Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. The next training will be in January. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy. org. RUOK Program
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Fort Bend County “Leash Law”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law.
• ROACHES • ANTS • FLEAS
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’
281-469-8240
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
