Now you can nominate your neighbor’s yard for YOM online at www. loneoakcommunity.com or by calling/emailing one of the committee members! (Contact only one of the committee members with the address of the property you would like to nominate).

Nominations must be received before the 20th of each month. Each month, members of the Lone Oak Yard of the Month Committee will select a residence to receive the Yard of the Month Award following the following criteria and eligibility: CRITERIA: • The property has no visible code violations.

• The property is one of the most aesthetically pleasing in the neighborhood.

Eligibility: • Homeowners must be current on their HOA dues.

• Properties may be personally or professionally maintained.

• Properties are eligible to receive the YOM once in a twelve month period.

Rules: • The decisions by the Lone Oak YOM Committee are final.

• Judging will occur during the last week of the month.

• Residents nominate a property by calling one of the committee members with the address of the house they wish to nominate.

What the YOM recipients receive: • A sign to recognize their efforts in beautifying the neighborhood. This sign is placed in their yard for up to a thirty (30) day period.

• A Gift Certificate to Lowe’s or Home Depot.

Parking

Over the last several months the Board has received several complaints about vehicles parking on the streets within Lone Oak. For the overall safety of our residents, as well as ensuring emergency vehicles are able to quickly maneuver through our streets, the Board has asked the deputies patrolling Lone Oak to address any/all vehicle violations; including speeding and parking. Section 7 of the Texas Drivers Handbook covers parking and states: Do Not Park Vehicles: • In front of a public or private driveway.

• Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.

• Within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection.

• Within 30 feet upon the approach to any flashing signal, stop sign, yield sign or other traffic control signal located at the side of a roadway.

• Do not park more than 18 inches from the curb or in a way that obstructs the flow of traffic.

Wednesdays and Saturdays are the Lone Oak scheduled trash pick-up days. Please do not set your garbage out early. We continue to see many residents put trash out 2-3 days before trash day. Please keep your garbage out of sight until the night before or the day of the scheduled pick up. Also, please be courteous and do not block the sidewalks with your bags and or trash bins and remove them in a timely manner after pick up.

Speeding in Lone Oak has been a hot topic of discussion lately. There have been numerous reports of speeding and of running stop signs. We have notified the Sheriff of these reports and have asked that tickets be issued to offenders. Several surrounding schools and residents have purchased kid alert safety signs to be placed in front of their homes and or buildings to remind people to slow down. More Block Captains are needed! Each Block Captain is responsible for contacting the residents who are assigned to them when there is information to pass along regarding incidents in Lone Oak or surrounding areas. Most Block Captains set up their distribution list via email, so it is important for residents to know who their Block Captain is. The time required is minimal - attend a few periodic meetings, distribute information, be aware of happenings in your neighborhood and host a National Night Out Party once a year! Cornerstone United Methodist Church Preschool has been serving the Copperfield area since 1985. Cornerstone is a State Licensed facility operating five half days a week. CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES

The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college.

The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor.

This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problemresolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling.

Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country. The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students.

Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission.

The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed Dec. 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq.

A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials.

Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded

by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior.

Two CFISD football players were among 25 finalists for the Touchdown Club of Houston High School Football Scholar-Athlete Award. The award was presented during the 14th Annual High School Football Scholar-Athlete Luncheon.

CFISD culinary students had an impressive display at the Greater Houston Area Cupcake Battle, sponsored by the Hospitality Educators Association of Texas and held last November at Pasadena Rayburn High School.

The students swept first through third places and took home two other superlatives at the event, which featured approximately 140 entries from high school students in greater Houston.

Cy-Fair High School senior Kaylen Gonzalez won first place for her “Reese’s Cupcake,” followed by Cy-Fair senior Phillip Morado in second place for his “Triple Chocolate Pistachio Cupcake.” Cypress Ridge High School senior Nancy Lopez placed third for her “Mocha Cupcake.”

Smith Middle School SMITH MIDDLE SCHOOL SEEKING COMMUNITY MENTORS

Smith Middle School is seeking community mentors to serve as positive role models for our students. Being a community mentor is extremely rewarding and only takes a commitment of 30 minutes to an hour a week to mentor/ meet with one of our 6th, 7th or 8th grade students.

Mentors must attend a one-time, district orientation before they begin mentoring at the school. Then, it just takes 30 minutes a week to truly make a difference in the life of a child. Once you have completed the training and background check, an administrator at Smith will work with you to match you with a student who would be the best fit for you.

If you enjoy working with children and making a true difference in people’s lives, the mentor program at Smith Middle School is just for you!! We are especially looking for quality male mentors to serve as role models to our male students.

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT

Copper Corners Service Unit held an investiture ceremony for our new leaders at the October service unit meeting and celebrated the birthday of our founder, Juliette Gordon Low (October 31st) with a special cake. We know that our new troops are holding investiture ceremonies for their girls and celebrating with families and friends.

Girl Scouting in the United States has been developing girls of courage, confidence and character since 1912. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18, who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any age and no previous Scouting experience is required. If you missed our Rally Nights in September, give us a call. It is never too late to join!

Our fall service project this year was in support of Covenant House’s 22nd Annual Candlelight Vigil and Rally for Homeless Youth. Troops brought their donations of new and gently used clothing, especially coats, jackets and other cold weather gear, to our service unit meeting on November 13th.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints new leadership

On October 28th, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the appointment of a new ecclesiastical leader, David R. Lauck, who will serve as the president of the Cypress Texas Stake in Northwest Houston.

He succeeds Stirling D. Pack Jr., who successfully completed nine years of service.

The Church is organized geographically into stakes, which are similar to a Catholic diocese. In his new assignment, President Lauck will preside over 12 congregations in Cypress, Waller, Fairfield, Bridgeland, Tomball and Northwest Houston.

Epiphany Bingo has been conducting bingo games on the west side since February 14, 1986. Epiphany conducts their bingo games every Friday night except holidays. • Sunday, December 23rd, the Cornerstone Chancel Choir accompanied by an orchestra will be presenting a special Christmas music program entitled “Night of the Father’s Love” at both the 8:30 and the 10:45 AM services. At the 9:30 AM service led by Journey Praise, the message will be a special “Advent-themed Readers Theater.”

• Monday, December 24th, Christmas Eve, Cornerstone will offer three worship opportunities: 4:00 PM, 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM. At 4:00 PM, there will be the Family Christmas Service. In addition to the singing of carols and Communion, children will be invited to the front of the church to hear the Christ Story and receive a special “Christmas” gift from the church. At 6:00 and 11:00 PM, there will be a traditional “Candlelight and Communion” service.

It will include the retelling of the “Birth of Christ” through Scripture readings and hymns. All three services will include a “Candle Lighting Ceremony” with everyone lighting candles during the singing of “Silent Night.”

• Sunday, December 30th, we will continue our Christmas celebrations and include a “Favorite Christmas Hymn” time at our 8:30 and 10:45 AM services.

During this time, worshippers will be given the opportunity to pick and choose their favorite Christmas hymns from The United Methodist Hymnal to be sung. At the 9:30 AM worship service, the Journey Praise Band will be leading worship with celebrative music. In addition, the Rev. Greg Smith will be bringing an inspiring post-Christmas message.

Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007).

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
