Aberdeen Trails Santa’s Sleigh Ride

All Aberdeen Trails residents are invited to Santa’s Sleigh Ride on Sunday, December 11th from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Please join us for hot chocolate, s’mores and a ride on the sleigh to view the neighborhood’s festive decorations. Remember to bring your cameras - Santa will be present from to 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Please bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation to charity.

2012 ASSESSMENTS DUE JANUARY 1, 2012

2012 Assessment notices have been mailed to all property owners and the assessment is due January 1, 2012. Late fees will be assessed on February 1, 2012. If you have not received your notice by December 1, 2011, please contact management immediately. Also included in the billing notice is the 2012 pool tag registration form. Please complete the form and send directly to management (NOT WITH YOUR PAYMENT) and pool tags will be mailed in late February 2012. You can fax or email your pool tag registration form to: lnorred@highsierramanagement. com or fax 281-391-7913.

The Board is happy to report that the dues amount for 2012 will remain the same as 2011 at $515 per lot. The Board worked diligently to assess each and every contract and service to ensure the best cost for the Association and to reduce any excess in the budget. We realize there are many residents experiencing financial hardship so we urge those of you that may need payment arrangements to contact management prior to the assessment due date to avoid penalties being added to your balance.

ABERDEEN TRAILS HAS RECYCLING

Many of you may have already noticed the recycling containers at the pool parking lot. Aberdeen Trails has partnered with I.M. Green Recycling to provide a way for our residents to recycle and potentially create a rebate back to the community to help provide other services and maintenance. A detailed list regarding the effort and providing instructions for you has been added to this newsletter and on the community website. An additional feature that I.M. Green provides is their relationship with many of the schools and churches in our area. Their partnerships allow individuals to receive personal labels from them to mark their recyclables in order to receive credit at your participating school or church. So be sure to check with I.M Green to see if your school or church is on the list and then you can recycle to earn rebates for them as well. But the labeling process is not required to simply put your items in the respective container at the pool. We hope that you will all participate and support our efforts to provide this worthy service.

HOLIDAY DECORATING CONTEST

The Association will be awarding Yard of the Month in December to the best decorated homes in the community. Decorating will be judged the week of December 19, 2011, so please make sure to have your lights on and blow ups plugged in after 7 PM each night to earn your chance to be considered!

EXTERIOR CHANGES OR IMPROVEMENTS TO YOUR HOME

Summer projects are in full swing so we want to take this opportunity to remind all of you that any change or addition to the exterior of your home must be applied for an approved by the Association prior to proceeding.

Regular maintenance such as replacing fence pickets, touching up paint, etc. do not require approval. But projects such as painting the entire house, replacing the roof, installing decorative items like flagpoles or birdbaths, etc. do require approval. Please contact management to inquire about your specific project if you have any questions just to be on the safe side. You can find the Home Improvement Guidelines and the application on the website for your convenience and review.

INTERIOR ELECTRICAL INSPECTIONS

One of the community’s recent preventative maintenance projects has been to have all exterior common area electrical breakers and wiring inspected for needed repairs and maintenance to prevent outages or electrical fires. With all the news reports on television of house fires recently, we want to take this opportunity to remind each of you how important the need for regular inspection and maintenance of your interior electrical wiring and breakers. There are many reputable electrical contractors that are willing to perform free interior breaker inspections so look on the internet or in the newspaper for information being publicized. Remember not to overload a circuit by plugging in too many electrical items in one outlet! Important information to consider when selecting your own provider is to request a copy of their current State licensing and insurance certificate.

DROUGHT CONDITIONS

Texas is in the grips of a historic drought. We have received less than half of our average rainfall. Our normal 13 inches of rain are only six. The most obvious impact of drought is the lack of water. Over half of the 15 major rivers flow below their normal rate. They snake anemically along, their banks now broad bare shoulders ornamented with lacy skeletal fish who look forever sideways in blame up at the withholding sky that took their homes and lives. Bacteria multiply in the decreased flow and choke our ailing streams. Salinity in the gulf is increasing, damaging our oyster beds.

Plants and animals dependent on the streams are dying or reproducing at lower rates. Nature is downsizing. So are the farmers and ranchers. Cattle once valued for their reproductive abilities are now culled for their meat. Despite the opening of forestry lands for some grazing, it costs less to sell them for slaughter than to continue to try to keep them hydrated and fed.

Reservoir lakes are drying up. Over 200 of our reservoirs are low, seven are functionally empty and one is expected to dry up entirely.

Several Texas districts are developing waste water recycling plants to make better use of “used” water. Once filtered, this water is often cleaner and more pollutant free than tap water.

Power plants rely on our reservoirs to keep them cool enough to generate electricity. This year ERCOT has striven to prevent power outages. A Level Two emergency was declared, calling for cutbacks in power usage during peak hours. More electricity was needed to combat the record heat. ERCOT announced that it would have to cut power for ten minutes every 1.5 hours to maintain a reserve sufficient enough to operate power plants. It seems to have worked. ERCOT signed temporary contracts with NRG to de-mothball four gasoline powered energy generators.

Homeowners have bigger concerns than just cooling the interiors of their homes. Houses built on expansive soils such as clay must guard against foundation cracking contractions as the clays on which many of them rest, desiccate and shrink. Their owners are encouraged to maintain their soil moisture levels at a time when they are also being told to conserve water. Water mains are suffering the same fate. In cruel irony, when they burst, they waste thousands of gallons of water.

Homebuilders and large multi-family dwellings are encouraged to use energy and water conserving measures. Double paned windows, xeriscaping techniques in their decorative landscapes, low flow showerheads, low flush toilets and increased inspections of breakers and dryer vents are all encouraged.

Texas is being scourged by drought, heat and energy shortages. The cascade of disaster and demand caused by a severely dry weather is the only thing raining down on our great state. But Texans are tough if they are anything. Rather than shy away from the challenge or throw our collective hands up in surrender, we are identifying our challenges and taking the steps to deal with them.

Reminders from your HOA

As a reminder to the Copperbrook residents, please be certain to: 1. Store your trashcans out of view from the street.

2. Place your trashcans on the curb no earlier than the evening before trash pickup and remove the trash cans from the curb no later than the evening of trash pickup.

3. Heed the Harris County Leash Law. Dogs must be restrained within some sort of enclosure and, when in public, they must be on a leash or physically held by their owner. This will protect anyone in the community that is walking or bicycling as well as the pet owner who could be legally held responsible or possibly sued for failure to restrain their pet.

COPPERFIELD WOMEN’S CLUB Women Serving the Community

Due to a very exciting and successful year, the Copperfield Women’s Club will change its name to the Cy-Fair Women’s Club! Membership to our club is open to all ladies in the Northwest Houston neighborhoods.

We look forward to sharing an adventurous new year with new members from the Copperfield area, as well as the entire Cy-Fair area.

Our name change will take place as of January 1, 2012.

If you are not familiar with our club, we are a service organization that gives back to the community. All funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community as well.

Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ at 7:00 PM for social time and refreshments, followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at Queenston and West Road.

2 cup crushed graham crackers 1/4 cup powdered sugar 1/2 cup butter 1 can sweetened condensed milk 8 oz. pkg. coconut (2 1/2 cups) 1 12 oz. package real chocolate chips

Mix graham crackers, powdered sugar and melted butter and pat into 9 x 13 pan. Bake 12 minutes at 350°F. Mix condensed milk and coconut together and spread over crust.

Bake 12 minutes at 350°F. Remove from oven. Sprinkle with real chocolate chips. Spread when melted. Cool and cut into squares.

1/2 cup butter 1 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1 Egg 1 1/2 cup flour 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup chopped pecans

Heat oven to 350°F. Cream butter, sugar and egg. Stir in flour, vanilla and pecans. Mix well by hand. Shape into balls about the size of walnuts, place on cookie sheets and flatten to about 1/8 inch. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely and harden.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.

• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.

• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.

• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again.

• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.

• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.

• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Cypress Hoops Invitational

The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation will host the Cypress Hoops Invitational on Thursday, December 8th - Saturday, December 10th. As a partner with the district, our goal is to create a successful high school basketball tournament that engages the entire community. Army Ranger Involved in “Black Hawk Down” Mission Keni Thomas, Bronze Star for Valor recipient, is an engaging speaker whose story captivates audiences from beginning to end. The highly successful movie “Black Hawk Down” is based on his Army Company’s mission in Mogadishu, Somalia. In addition to speaking, Thomas is a recording artist with two critically acclaimed projects.

CFISD VIPS FALL CONFERENCE

It was barely 8:00 AM in the morning on Friday, Oct. 14th. They were beginning to arrive. Upon checking in; name badges were handed out along with a bright red folder full of the day’s agenda and the conference material. There was even an eco-friendly tote bag full of coupons and goodies generously donated by local area businesses.

The room was huge and full of tables decorated with bright paper blocks spelling out the main part of this year’s theme, “Teamwork.”

This was the annual VIPS Fall Conference held by the CFISD VIPS Executive Board at the Berry Center in Cypress. The schedule was full. It consisted of everything from learning how to turn a popsicle stick into a fun treat for a teacher or volunteer to tips on helping our students handle stress. The attendees could choose from a variety of 50 minute sessions that covered topics such as: Internet Safety; Reaching Out to Diverse Volunteers; Guidelines and Best Practices for Fundraising; and even Taking Care of Your Personal Health While Maintaining a Busy Lifestyle.

Something was most impressive about this conference to one volunteer. This audience of 200 plus was comprised of men and women, volunteers and school staff - not limited to Cy-Fair ISD. There were 4 other area districts represented at this conference: Alief ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Houston ISD and Spring ISD. The current budget environment has left our school districts vying to be first in line for every resource of financial and physical support they can find. But for one day in October, the district boundary lines came down. There was no competition. There was no hidden agenda. Despite the traffic and everyday challenges, educators and volunteers from schools all over our county came together for a common purpose: improving their volunteer program thereby affecting the students in a positive way.

This was simply an opportunity to attend an event that focused on several different areas of how to build on their volunteer resources in order to enhance the children’s education. While that volunteer sat looking out over the diverse crowd; she couldn’t help but see a universal theme, “Yes, in this room, it’s truly all about the students.”

Largest Recognized District in Texas - Once Again

For the fourth consecutive year, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the largest Recognized school district in Texas. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) confirmed that an appeal was granted and CFISD’s accountability rating was changed to Recognized. The increase in rating came as a result of an appeal to recalculate the TAKS science passing percentage for Dean Middle School.

The decision changed the campus’ accountability rating to Academically Acceptable.

STAAR TEST TO REPLACE TAKS TEST

STAAR, State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, has replaced TAKS. As the Texas Education Agency distributes information to the district about this new assessment program, we will post on the website at www.cfisd.net. TEA may not finalize all information until the beginning of the spring semester, so we encourage you to revisit the website throughout the school year. Be assured, we will post information as soon as it is available to the district.

CRBS FLAG FOOTBALL PLAYS TOUGH Takes Second in Conference!

Clay Road Baptist School (CRBS) Middle School Flag Football team took second place in the West Houston Christian Athletics Conference (WHCAC) championship on Saturday, October 29th, held at Southwest Christian Academy. The CRBS Eagles held Calvary Episcopal School to two touchdowns in a heavily defensive game against a very tough, disciplined team until the very last play, with the final score being 20-0. Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood.

As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordan’s focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.

Houston Fire Fighters Making Houston the City with the Biggest Heart FOR MDA

It’s official, Houstonians through the Houston Fire Fighters raised a record breaking $509,961 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association making them the #1 Fill-the-Boot department in the country for the last 9 out of 10 years raising more than $6.3 million during that time.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-theBoot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will also be out March 10th, April 14th and May 12th to collect funds for the campaign.

The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas.

Christmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved family member who has recently died; it may trigger some other sadness; it may be a time that has always been difficult.

The constant refrain on the radio and television, in shopping malls and churches about the happiness of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation - all these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. We need the space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern; we need to know that we are not alone.

Our spirits sink, as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us.

For these reasons, Covenant Lutheran Church, 3785 Barker Cypress Rd, Houston offers a special “Blue Christmas” (also known as “Longest Night”) service on December 21st at 7:00 pm.

St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church DivorceCare and DivorceCare for Kids

DivorceCare (for adults) and DivorceCare (for Kids) will be starting at St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church. These programs provide Christcentered help for adults and children (grades 1-6) struggling with the hurt and pain of divorce and separation. They are Christian-based support groups designed to help process and bring healing and will begin at St. Cuthbert’s on Sunday, January 9th from 4:00-6:00 PM for twelve consecutive weeks. There is a $15 registration fee for each group that covers an activity book and snacks for the program and can be paid at the first session. Scholarships are available.

At this time, childcare will not be provided. Brochures highlighting the programs are available from the church office or from Peggy Addington. How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. WANTED! A FEW GOOD MUSICIANS! The Sounds of Cypress Band, formerly known as the Cy-Fair Community Band, is producing beautiful sounds, having fun as a group and seeking new members who just love to play music. The Cy-Fair Community Band was initiated about three years ago, with approximately five or six musicians coming together to explore their common interest in music and their enjoyment of playing together. They have grown to 33 members who just love to play music and share their talents for the enjoyment they get from playing. They have evolved into an accomplished group of band members and have recently changed their name to Sounds of Cypress. DeeDee Flores is director of group. By day she is a band director at Plummer Middle School. Her ability has led the group to develop polished performances, which they are anxious to share.

This accomplished group is ready to perform for group events. They have a great program of musical selections. Also, they can tailor their selections to the interests age of your group. Looking for players to formulate a Bunco Club. If you don’t know how to play Bunco, that would not be a problem – it is just a roll of the dice.

The best benefit is meeting lots of people just like yourselves, who want to enjoy an evening out, to enjoy the camaraderie of the other women, to get away from all the everyday stress.

We would usually play about 2 hours an evening and another hour for eating and mingling, etc. It would be once a month, I am hoping to get at least 12 women who can play Saturday night.
