NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS This is the time of the year for giving and counting our blessings. We should all keep in mind those that are less fortunate then we are and do something to assist those in need. With that in mind, the Board gets occasional calls from church groups, Boy Scout troops, etc. that are seeking to help those in need. We know there are some in our community who perhaps lack the resources or the physical strength to do small cleanup projects around the home. There are resources out there to help but unless we are aware of the need, nothing happens. If you know of someone in our community or perhaps you are a homeowner in need, please contact a Board member or our management company and perhaps we can match you up with a group willing to help out. Remember without communication, nothing happens. The subject of dead trees, shrubs and lawns is getting very old. Letters have gone out to homeowners to correct the deficiencies. Dead trees are EXTREMELY dangerous. The longer they remain, the more dangerous they become. If we get high winds or perhaps an ice storm, some of these will go down and possibly damage your home or a neighbor’s property. Insurance typically does not pay for this as the insurance company will take the position that the homeowner was aware of the hazard and was negligent in not removing it. PLEASE get the dead trees removed and have the stump taken down to yard level. Stumps in a yard are a violation of our deed restrictions. Do not put yourself in a position of doing nothing and end up with thousands of dollars in attorney fees! The Board is taking a very strong approach against homeowners who do not remove dead trees. If you are a homeowner with a neighbor that has a dead tree, I would suggest visiting with that homeowner as your property could be the one damaged. Please get the dead trees removed NOW! All homeowners should have by now received their invoices for the $200 annual homeowner’s maintenance assessment. This was due by the end of December but we do allow a grace period until 1/31/12. Please make sure you send this in on time as late fees begin to accrue after 1/31/12. There is no excuse to have to pay late fees, as this is a very small assessment that is probably less than most monthly cell phone bills. We still have about two dozen homeowners who still have not paid their 2011 assessment and those accounts will be turned over to our attorney for legal action after the first of the year. If you are one of those, it’s long past time to get this matter resolved. Every year I am truly amazed at that the few who cannot seem to budget for $200 per year. 2011 was a financially difficult year for many in this country and our area. Unemployment has not decreased much, interest rates remain low for retired individuals depending upon the income (of course, if you’re borrowing money, it’s a good thing) and there remains much uncertainty in our economy. NC seems to be faring well in that when we have foreclosures, they are normally quickly purchased and improvements are made. It’s difficult obtaining mortgage financing these days, so one has to assume a new purchaser is pretty qualified to own a home, at least financially. We continue to try to add new amenities to the park, make alleyway repairs when needed and communicate with homeowners. Now if we could just get some RAIN! A Merry Christmas and a healthy, safe and prosperous New Year to all! Don Mach NCCIA President and Legal Liaison

Celebrating Yard of the Season – Summer and Fall As I write this article for the newsletter, our region is still under quote “exceptional, extreme” drought conditions. It has been quite a job, not to mention costly, to keep our lawns at all during this summer into the fall season. The board is proud to see the majority of our neighbors have done very well. We were all very proud to see so many homes, even some whole blocks, displaying patriotism with the U.S. flag during this time also. If you notice any court or cul-de-sacs islands in our community needing clean up from dead shrubs or trees, please email us so we can contact the landscaper to take care of them. We will be replacing many areas as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it may not be until early spring due to the drought. With all of this said, we have awarded the homes listed below for either summer or fall yard of the season. They received a gift card to Lowe’s and a sign in their yard. 1215 Shillington 1626 Cadogan 20342 Prince Creek 519 Walworten 1626 Cadogan

602 South Fry 1311 Rustic Knolls 1170 Barkston 20706 Park Bend 20315 Hampshire Rocks

We will be awarding five homes in December for the yard of the season. Keep up the hard work and enjoy the holidays. We wish everyone a prosperous 2012!

How to address the Board directly The monthly meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the second Thursday, at 6:30 PM at the Mason Creek Community Center Houghton Room. The facility is located at the corner of Houghton and Kingsland. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. However, due to time constraints, we cannot allow audience members to speak at the meeting unless they contact us ahead of time and get put on the agenda. As much as I dislike telling that to someone who has taken the time out of his or her schedule to come to the meeting with a concern, I must respect the time of the volunteers on the Board as well. To get on the agenda, simply call SCS Management Services, Inc. at 281-4631777, ext., 7132. Of course, you may also feel free to put your concerns in writing to any other Board member or me, via e-mail (our addresses are on the website at nottinghamcountry.org). KISD PARTNERS IN EDUCATION Jan. 20th - Men Who Mentor. A manly breakfast for guys who currently mentor and those who are interested in mentoring. 7:30 – 9:00 AM, ESC Room 1200.

Families campaign Last year, our Katy ISD community supported 265 Katy ISD students and their families by raising over $13,000. Coordinating Food for Families is always a tremendous blessing for us here in Partners in Education. We hope to share that joy with you.

To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

STEPPING INTO THE FUTURE SCHOLARSHIPS Drs. James Jacobs and Nicolas Manriquez, of Your Total Foot Care Specialist, are pleased to announce, two $1,500 “Stepping Into The Future” scholarships for 2012 KISD graduating seniors. Applications must be submitted to the offices of Your Total Foot Care Specialist by March 29, 2012, 5:00 PM. A third party committee will select the two winning applicants. The “Stepping Into The Future” scholarship program is available to seniors graduating with GPA’s ranging from 2.5 to 3.7. The scholarships are geared towards those students showing academic promise through a combination of demonstrated academic achievement and leadership potential. The two “Stepping Into The Future” scholarship recipients will be announced at the Katy ISD Awards Ceremonies during May.

Pictured (L-R): Jim Burns, KEYS Mentor; Eduardo Reyes, former KEYS student now attending the University of Houston; Dr. Cazilda Steele, Principal, Mayde Creek High School; and Wayne Meyer, General Manager, Firethorne.

KEYS Mentoring

Firethorne has committed to Katy ISD’s Partners in Education (PIE) as the first KEYS Scholarship Platinum Sponsor for 2011. As a KEYS sponsor, Firethorne is helping to create scholarships for students who have participated in KEYS through their senior year. This is the first year that PIE has opened sponsorship levels for KEYS, with 100 percent of the sponsorship dollars going directly to KEYS Scholarships. Former KEYS student Eduardo Reyes and his KEYS mentor Jim Burns visited Firethorne representatives last week to thank them for their generous support.

One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child.

Estate l a e R r u o Y ife! L r o f e c r u Reso The KEYS (Keep Encouraging Youth toward Success) mentor program is offered to Katy ISD students who are on the brink of success. Often, these students have been challenged by life circumstances outside of their control. Mentors meet with their students on campus each week during the school year, in between the school day. When Reyes’ mentor first met him, it wasn’t with the intent of becoming his mentor, it was with the intent of helping him organize his backpack, locker and life. After several weeks of helping Reyes get organized, Burns naturally fell into the role of becoming his mentor. For the next six years, Burns helped Reyes recognize his gifts, talents, intelligence and encouraged him to pursue his dreams. Firethorne, a 1,400-acre residential community in Katy/ Fulshear, is actively involved with Katy ISD through programs such as Junior Achievement and the Partners in Education annual Promise to Read and Food for Families programs. Firethorne is located near the crossroads of I-10 west and FM 1463. KEYS’ annual event Ties & Tiaras, hosted at Agave Road on March 1, 2012, will celebrate mentors while supporting the KEYS Scholarship Fund. Featuring student performances throughout the come-and-go event, the 2012 Mentors of the Year will also be announced. KEYS is brought to you by Partners in Education, the department that brings the community into the classroom. Demographic Update Shows Continued Growth for Katy ISD

During the October 24th Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Pat Guseman, president of Population and Survey Analysts (PASA), presented the 2011 Demographic Update that shows steady growth for Katy ISD, at a rate of approximately three percent each year over the next five years. While slightly slower than the rapid growth experienced between 2001 and 2009, the report shows approximately 23,000 additional students moving to the district during the next 10 years. The district also announced that as part of the Long Range Facilities Plan process, Katy ISD has entered into the initial stages of the Attendance Boundary Modification (ABM) process. Last November, Katy ISD voters approved a bond referendum that included five new campuses – three elementary schools, one junior high and one high school. Four of the five campuses are set to open in fall 2012 and High School No. 7 is slated to open in fall 2013. Katy ISD is a TEA Recognized district serving more than 62,000 students. Covering 181 square miles west of downtown Houston, Katy ISD is comprised of 53 campuses and with more than 8,000 employees is one of the largest employers in the West Houston area.

Hundreds of gifted and talented elementary students enjoyed getting together at the Katy Parents of Gifted & Talented (KPGT) GT Create Date, to make puppets out of recyclable materials. Students and parents let their imaginations loose as they turned trash to treasure at this fun event co-sponsored by KPGT and KISD. Led by professional puppeteer Greg Ruhe from Puppet Pizzazz and professional artist Taylor Perry, the children enjoyed an inspiring and hilarious puppet show before launching into their own creations. The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented (KPGT) organization was formed in 1987. It is a non-profit organization. KPGT aims promote the welfare of gifted and talented students by empowering KISD families and educators with information, resources, tools and voice to ensure opportunities that encourage gifted students’ passion for learning.
