NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS Sometimes it seems like we just cannot win! We really needed some rain and on Monday, January 9th, we got some of the much needed precipitation. The problem is that we received about 5.5 inches in less than two hours, which again resulted in street flooding and some homes taking in water. Once again, this is an abnormal amount of rain coming down in that short of time period and very few storm drains in the Houston area can accommodate that much water. NCCIA spent a great deal of money a few years ago trying to determine why we are experiencing street and home flooding on numerous recent occasions. Harris County Flood Control also looked into the matter and could only tell us what we already knew, “we received an abnormal amount of rain in a short time frame.” Still it is no comfort to those homeowners who continue to experience flooding issues. We do know that the storm sewer drainage pipes, which were put in place back in the 1970’s, are much smaller than what is now required by the county. Of course, back in the 70’s, NC was about the only thing out here so drainage and water runoff were not an issue. There is very little that can be done about our storm drains and drainage pipes. Harris County did dredge a portion of Mason Creek last summer but whether that will have a long-term positive affect on the flooding situation remains to be seen. Obviously, it did not help on January 9th. We also are aware that the recent street flooding situation was exacerbated by homeowners again not raking up leaves and allowing them to wash into the street and thus, slow down the water flow by blocking the storm sewers. There were also trash bags of garbage floating in the streets, which blocked water flow. We know this was not the complete cause of the problem but when water flow is blocked it certainly does not help. PLEASE rake your leaves and dispose of them and do not allow them to wash into the streets! Do not allow your yard folks, to blow the leaves in the streets. Let’s give ourselves a fighting chance to avoid flooding by at least doing the proper things we CAN do to help the situation. If your home flooded from the rear of the home, then it’s time that you seek engineering help to install some kind of backyard drain to move the water into the street. I have been informed that the Harris County Flood Control District is seeking input from homeowners that may have been flooded. If you fall into that category, please call them at 713-684-4000 and advise them of such. It cannot hurt and perhaps enough calls will spur some future action. We continue to field complaints and see instances of homeowners who are operating businesses out of their homes or are driving large commercial vehicle from their jobs and parking them in the street or their driveways. Both of these are violations of our deed restrictions and you will receive a letter stating such. If the violations are not correct, NCCIA will pursue legal action, so please stop this kind of activity. Another very disturbing compliant we receive is in regard to more than one family living in a home. We do not regard an elderly parent that might be living in a home with the family as a “second family.” It’s my understanding that INS recently raided a NC home and found a number of illegal aliens residing there. If any homeowner is aware of this kind of situation, please advise the board and we will act and your identity will be protected. This kind of thing is not acceptable in NC. Finally, when you read this article, it will be nearing the end of February and long past due for taking down Christmas decorations. No one cares if you leave them up all year inside your home but not so much on the exterior. If you fall into this category, please take them down.
