Offical Newsletter for Nottingham Country, Sections 1-9

November 2011 NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS Many homeowners will begin receiving letters from our management company to re-sod their yards, remove dead trees and shrubs. As previously stated in past newsletter columns, we have asked homeowners to do minimal watering in order to preserve their landscaping. About 80% or more did this and their landscaping survived for the most part. For those who chose not to for whatever reason, the time has come that you must replace what you lost. Our deed restrictions and guidelines call for all homes to have maintained lawns and appropriate shrubbery. Right now there are way too many homes with no lawns whatsoever due to the lack of watering. We will not permit dead lawns and shrubbery to bring down home values in NC. Yes, it’s somewhat expensive to do this but it must be done. Bottom line is that if 80% to 90% of homeowners can maintain lawns this past summer, why are there a few who cannot do so? Probably best to get it done now while the weather is a bit cooler. We continue to hear complaints from some homeowners about their neighbors setting out their trash cans and other materials on the weekend and leaving it there days before our vendor comes by to pick it up. Please refrain from doing this. If you are perhaps trimming trees and need to pile it up at the curb ahead of time, it’s understandable and we can live with that as it is not something one does on a weekly basis. Trash cans should not be left at the curb except the morning of the pickup. We have backdoor trash pick-up so really the only things that need to go to the curb are grass trimmings and larger items. Please observe this requirement and keep the neighborhood looking neat and clean. You may have noticed that Harris County is doing some repairs on the neighborhood streets. We were told by the County that they have not done repairs out here for years as there used to be a homeowner who reported bad streets years ago and since they did not receive any calls lately, they have not come out. They have now been made aware of street issues, so hopefully, we will see some repairs done. The NCCIA annual meeting will be held at the community center on Tuesday, November 15th. Might be a good thing to come by and meet the board members and learn more about the happenings in your community. A community is only as strong as the residents who reside there. Don Mach NCCIA President and Legal Liaison

CONSTABLES PLEASE CONTACT THE CONSTABLE AT 281-463-6666 WHEN ANY SUSPICIOUS OR DISORDERLY CONTACT IS OBSERVED.

How to address the Board directly The monthly meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the second Thursday, at 6:30 PM at the Mason Creek Community Center Houghton Room. The facility is located at the corner of Houghton and Kingsland. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. However, due to time constraints, we cannot allow audience members to speak at the meeting unless they contact us ahead of time and get put on the agenda. As much as I dislike telling that to someone who has taken the time out of his or her schedule to come to the meeting with a concern, I must respect the time of the volunteers on the Board as well. To get on the agenda, simply call SCS Management Services, Inc. at 281-463-1777, ext., 7132.

Be Thankful, Happy Thanksgiving! 1

If you haven’t visited our website, please go to www.nottinghamcounty.org and sign-up to get emails (E-Blasts) about Community Events, Lost Pets and Security Issues. As always... if you would like to offer your comments or suggestions, please email the webmaster directly by sending an email to: WebMaster@NottinghamCountry.org. The latest happenings in Nottingham Country are posted on the Website first. Items like Heavy Trash Pickup dates, Election Results, Lost Pets and Safety/Security Incidents in our neighborhood are posted on the site. We also have applications and forms posted on the website. If you lose (or find) a pet, send an email to: WebMaster@NottinghamCountry.org, along with a photo of the pet, if possible, and we will post your lost (or found) pet on our website. We will also notify our email subscribers or your loss.

Foreclosures in Nottingham Country The following is the current inventory of foreclosed homes in NC as of 9/22/11: ADDRESS OWNER 210 Laxton Fannie Mae 20223 Tilstock Traditions Bank 20111 Yorkway Citimortgage 1134 Dominion Bank of America 1147 Shillington Deutsche Bank 306 Bauxhall Bank of America 739 Dominion Bank of America 20206 Monkswood ISB Capital 1051 Flagmore Fannie Mae 20323 Warrington Foremost Mortgage 20538 Laverton Deutsche Bank The foreclosures are selling but we seem to be adding about one new one per month. The trend is slowing down which is a positive sign. Again many of these properties have been neglected and need work but there are good buying opportunities here. Please be mindful of these vacant homes and try to assist in keeping them looking decent from the street if at all possible. If any homeowner is aware of an abandoned home that is not on this list, please contact the Board and we will check into it. Occasionally homeowners will leave a home in anticipation of foreclosure. MCMEANS JH FIND Creative ways to learn about cell structures in Science McMeans Jr. High 7th grade students recently made animal cell replicas in very different ways. Each student created a model of a cell and labeled the organelles. They had to know the function of each organelle. Shane’s cell was constructed on a base of wood with a working electronic panel. Corresponding buttons show the parts and light up when pushed. Journi’s cell was very colorful and constructed in a bucket. The cells were on display in the library for all the students to see.

Students Continue the Tradition of Strong Performance on AP Exams Katy ISD’s tradition of increasing student participation and strong performance on Advanced Placement (AP) exams continues as the district recently learned that each one of its six high school campuses showed an increase in the number of students participating in the exams. In addition, every high school campus exceeded the state and national percentage of AP students making a qualifying score of 3 or better on the exams. Katy ISD is among the 388 U.S. public school districts (one of only 23 in Texas) to be listed on the 2011 College Board AP Achievement List. This list identifies districts that simultaneously achieved increases in access to AP courses while maintaining or improving the rate of students earning a score of 3 or better on the exams – the score that generally qualifies a student for college credit. In May 2011, more than 3,000 Katy ISD students took more than 7,200 AP exams, with 79 percent of the exams earning a score of 3 or better. This reflects a 24 percent increase from 2010 in the number of exams earning these high scores. Advanced Placement and PreAP courses are designed to challenge students beyond grade level academic courses and prepare them for success in future advanced coursework. Katy ISD recognizes that support and encouragement from the campus, the teacher, and parents are critical to student success. Therefore, the district follows an inclusive enrollment model for AP and PreAP courses that provides support systems for student success.

November is Epilepsy Awareness Month Many people are surprised to find out that Epilepsy is as common as breast cancer and takes as many lives each year. It is a terrifying and potentially fatal disease that carries tremendous stigma. Epilepsy affects approximately 150,000 people throughout the greater Houston, Dallas and Ft. Worth areas. • Epilepsy and Seizures affect almost 3 MILLION Americans of all ages - more than Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy and Parkinson’s disease combined! • 200,000 new cases of Epilepsy are diagnosed every year. • 10% of Americans will experience a seizure at least once in their lives. • Each year in the U.S. 45,000 children under the age of 15 develop Epilepsy. • A patient’s first seizure will occur without warning. • EPILEPSY IS NOT CONTAGIOUS. • Medications do not cure epilepsy, but they may help control or prevent seizures. Medications help between 50-70% of patients. • In Texas, if you are diagnosed with Epilepsy, your doctor must certify that you are seizure free for a period of 6 months before you can drive again. • The color for Epilepsy Awareness is Purple. • THERE IS NO CURE FOR EPILEPSY… YET! You can learn more and help find a cure at www.epilepsyfoundation.org.

HAVE A PERFECT THANKSGIVING! Want to be the perfect holiday host or guest? Check out these tips on holiday entertaining: If you are the host: • Whenever anyone offers to help or bring a dish, say, “Yes, thank you!” • Use hollowed bread loaves as serving containers for cheeses, dips, olives, chips and small sandwiches. • Once the table settings and centerpiece are in place, sit in each chair to assure comfort • Include favorite kids’ foods, especially those they can eat neatly with their fingers. • Provide at least one low-calorie dish and a vegetarian option. Then serve a sinful dessert. • Completely clear the table of all dishes from previous courses before serving dessert. • Keep club soda nearby to clean spots or stains on the tablecloth or clothing. If you are a guest: • Arrive no earlier than the time the host has announced and no later than half an hour after the time. • Plan to stay about an hour after dinner unless travel plans or sleepy children necessitate leaving earlier. • Bring a gift and write a note of thanks afterward. • Offer to help set up for dinner and to clean afterward. • Notify the host of any special dietary needs - if you are a vegetarian, diabetic or allergic to common foods. • The best potluck dishes are those that need minimal preparation in the host’s kitchen, can be served at room temperature and require only a fork to eat.

CY-FAIR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 2011 Mobility Forum

Chamber members and non-members are invited to participate in the discussion on how the region addresses mobility challenges in the face of continued growth. There will be two sessions with a luncheon in between. The featured speaker is Commissioner Ned J. Holmes. Holmes is a commissioner of the Texas Transportation Commission, which oversees statewide activities of the Texas Department of Transportation. Additional forum speakers will be: Steve Clark, PE, ARUP; Mark Ellis, Gulf Coast Rail District and Texas State Representative Allen Fletcher. Currently, the chamber is working with the Texas Department of Transportation on the re-designation application process of U.S. 290 to an interstate status. The status change could possibly allow additional federal funds toward the proposed improvements of U.S. 290 along with allowing greater visibility for domestic and international firms seeking to relocate in the Cy-Fair Houston market sector. In addition, the construction of the SH 99; Segment E (I-10 West to U.S. 290) has begun with an anticipated completion over the next 18-24 months. Once completed, Segment E will allow an alternative route for commuters and businesses along U.S. 290 traveling to the West Houston Energy Corridor. The Mobility Forum will be Thursday, November 3rd from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress. Individual tickets are $60 and sponsorship tables of 10 range from $600 to $2,500. Lunch will be served. For more information, contact Casey Cargle at 281-3731390 or casey@cyfairchamber.com or visit www.cyfairchamber.com.

Living Word Lutheran Church in Katy NEW CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP LEADER WELCOMED Living Word Lutheran Church in Katy is pleased to announce that Lisa Jastram of Sugar Land, TX, has joined the staff as the 9:30 AM contemporary worship leader. Jastram is no stranger to the Katy area having performed in many of the area churches, libraries and schools with Oasis for Children, her educational entertainment venture. She comes to Living Word at an exciting time in the life of the church as they complete their Envision Project begun less than a year ago. The church has been installing new lighting, screens, projectors and systems upgrades to maximize possibilities for meaningful and exciting worship. Sept. 25th was the first Sunday for the congregation to experience the new amenities. One of Jastram’s goals were to make the service more intergenerational and family friendly. She also hopes to see more of the arts incorporated into worship including dance and visual arts. Previously, Jastram has led the musical portion of worship at St. Martin’s Lutheran in Sugar Land, New Hope Lutheran in Missouri City and Grace UCC in Alief. Her background as a missionary child raised in Japan matches well with Living Word’s emphasis on global mission.

Slow Cookers are a Cook’s Best Friend By The Paula Deen Test Kitchen

More leisure time and a homemade meal? Save money on groceries, use less electricity, and enjoy better flavor? You bet! And with a slow cooker, you don’t even have to be there while your dinner cooks. With the invention of the original Crock-Pot® in the 1970s, we’ve been able to layer ingredients in our slow cookers, leave the house for work or play, and come home, hours later, to an inviting aroma-filled house and evening meal. Rival still manufactures the Crock-Pot®, but many other manufacturers are in the game with competitive models. The “crockpot” moniker has become an icon for any slow cooker. These days, choices are not limited to 2-temperature manual units; they also come programmable, with multiple time and temperature settings, countdown timers, built-in thermometers, and automatic temperature shifts to warm in case you are late getting home. There are slow cooker sizes and settings to fit your family’s individual needs. Though shape is not necessarily a deal breaker when purchasing, it is a consideration. A money-saving attribute of slow cooking is that tougher, less expensive meats are rendered meltingly tender and juicy. Larger roasts and whole chickens fit better into an ovalshaped model and will cook more evenly, although you can trim them to fit into a round one. It’s easy to adapt your favorite oven or stovetop recipes to slow cooker cooking. Regardless of yield, if your dish normally cooks in 15 to 30 minutes, you can count on 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours cooking in a slow cooker on High power or 4 to 6 hours on Low. If it takes 35 to 45 minutes, you should allow 2 to 3 hours on High power or 6 to 8 hours on Low. Main dishes like roasts and stews that cook up to 3 hours will take 4 to 5 hours on High or more than 8 hours on Low. For instance, Sweet Merlot Beef Stew should cook in about 4 hours on High or 8 to 10 hours on low; after you brown the meat, add everything to the slow cooker for the total cooking time, including the onions and mushrooms. Other tips for successful recipe conversion: *To eliminate excess fat, remove skin from poultry and trim excess fat from meats before cooking. Pre-brown meats, and drain before adding to the crockpot, especially ground meats.

KATY PAINTING

*Brown chops and roasts to caramelize the outsides for richer flavor and attractive appearance. For Low Country Smothered Pork Chops, prepare the chops as directed and layer in the cooker with the strips of green pepper, onion, garlic, half of the broth, and Worcestershire. Add more broth as needed to thin the gravy.

Interior & Exterior Painting Home Repairs • Pressure Washing HardiPlank Installation • Sheetrock & Texture

*Vegetables, especially roots like potatoes, rutabagas, and carrots, cook more slowly than meats, so cut pieces uniformly and add them at the beginning. (It can take 8 to 10 hours on Low for a “baked” potato to cook until tender!) Italian Chicken and Vegetable Soup is a perfect example; just put all the ingredients into the slow cooker, reserving half a can of broth to add at the end of cooking, if necessary. Let it cook 2 to 2 1/2 hours on High or 4 to 6 hours on Low. *Most stews, soups, and other braised dishes require less liquid. If you end up with too much, pour it into a saucepan and reduce it until flavorful and thickened. If you need more liquid, it can be added at the end of the cooking time. *Cheese, milk, cream, and other dairy: Add dairy products close to the end of cooking. *Uncooked rice, however, requires standard liquid amounts. It cooks fast, so add it to the slow cooker during the last hour of cooking on High or 2 hours on Low. It is better to cook pasta separately and add it before serving. *Most slow cooker liners are removable, allowing you to fill it up to a day before cooking. Remove the stone liner and assemble the casserole in it; cover and refrigerate until you are ready to cook. You can prepare Chicken and Rice Casserole ahead and cook it 1 1/2 to 2 hours on High or 4 to 6 hours on Low or until it is hot, stirring in cheese during the last hour of cooking. *Spices tend to loose their power during long, slow cooking; be ready to re-season towards the end.

Tips for “Black Friday” Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and is known as the busiest shopping day of the year. The name comes from an accounting term - red ink means a negative profit margin; black ink means a positive profit. Check out these tips on maximizing Black Friday: 1. Check Out the Ads: Your local Thanksgiving Day newspaper will be packed with ads, coupons, and circulars. This will be your number one source to local Black Friday savings and it will also help you organize your day to maximize savings. 2. Do Your Research Before Friday: If you are hoping to scoop up a deal on Friday on a big-ticket item, get your research out of the way asap. Being knowledgeable about the products you want to buy will help you avoid being sucker-punched with loud advertising for poor products. 3. Compare Prices: Utilize price-comparison Internet shopping sites to assist you in comparing product prices. Compare the “options” included with the product. Some retailers will low-ball the advertised price on a stripped down product and then you will be charged extra for the necessary parts. 4. Early Bird Shopper Discounts: The Early Bird Shopper is the real winner on Black Friday. Stores offering Early Day Shopper Specials, but with no “rain checks”, which means once they run out of the products, you are out of luck. 5. Night Owl Discounts - Thanksgiving Eve: Internet shoppers can beat the Early Birds by shopping online in the pre-dawn hours of Black Friday. Many retailers will be posting their Black Friday specials, which can be ordered, online and picked-up at your local store. Special “Web Only” deals will also be available starting as early as Thanksgiving eve. 6. Bring the Ads: Many stores offer a “lowest-price” guarantee; be sure to bring a copy of the exact product being advertised for less. 7. Know the Store Policies: Knowing the store policies on returns can help you determine where to buy. Many retailers are including restocking fees and shorter return deadlines. Almost all of the major retail chains require receipts for returns and exchanges and many keep a database of individuals who abuse return policies. 8. Gift Receipts: Gift receipts generally include a description of the item purchased but do not disclose the price paid. Including a gift-receipt should help insure a hassle-free return experience for gift recipients. 9. Cash is King: Enough said.
