Dear Parkway Lakes Homeowners: Did you know that by virtue of becoming a homeowner you are automatically a member of the Parkway Lakes Village Homeowners Association? Are you familiar with the By-Laws?

Do you know your rights? If you do not know the answer to these questions it is time that you do!

Save the date for a tentative meeting between November 14th and 25th. Look for more information regarding homeowners taking control of our HOA and the new laws, which will benefit homeowners that will come into effect soon! There are some very important issues that we need to address. Let your voice be heard in person or by proxy. If you cannot attend the meeting in person, it is extremely important that you submit your proxy. We must have enough people attending the meeting either in person or by proxy for the meeting to be considered valid. Information regarding proxies will be sent out via our website. Look for more information in the days to come at www.plhg.org. The meeting will be facilitated by a licensed attorney specializing in Corporate, Construction, Development, Master Planned Community, Trust and Fiduciary Matters, Directors & Officers Liability, Collections and Real Estate Law. Birdies for the Brave golf tournament Supporting Wounded Veterans and Their Families For the fourth straight year the Katy Community is privileged to host the Birdies for the Brave Golf Tournament at Meadowbrook Farms and the Gala at Safari Texas. The Gala will be Saturday evening, Nov. 5th and the golf tournament is Sunday, Nov. 6th. All proceeds go to a variety of charities that serve veterans and their families. There are many opportunities for Katy residents and businesses to contribute and participate in the many inspiring activities of the event. Parents for Success Parents let us unite! There is an increasing number of youth and children in our community. Let’s give them an opportunity to do positive things for their community, neighborhood and school. We are starting “Parents for Success” coalition. We want to partner with parents in our subdivision and other nearby subdivisions to: • Provide an avenue for connecting families with resources in our community; • Promote strong advocacy for our children’s education in Hubenak Elementary School, Westheimer Middle School, Briscoe Junior High School, Foster High School, etc.; • Support children by raising money to fund neighborhood activities, necessary supplies, donations, school programs, neighborhood programs, etc. and have; • Enrichment classes, neighborhood improvements and much more.

Parents for Success activities held throughout the year will be made possible by the volunteer efforts of parents, grandparents, guardians, business owners and anyone who wants to support the children of our community.

Neighborhood Safety Tips from the Parkway Lakes Newsletter Committee Editor!

We each want to do our parts to keep or families, homes and community safe. One of our homeowners reported that there were a group of teens loitering at the pool area. These teens did not belong to our neighborhood and were involved in unsafe activities. Currently we do not have a lifeguard for the pool and there is concern about the lighting in various areas. Please email me Deborahkgreen@AOL.com if you have concerns regarding the safety and security of our community.

Here are a few tips: • Make sure you keep your home secure. Doors to the outside of your home should be closed and locked for safety. This includes your garage door. Only open the door for those you know or are expecting and ask for identification and verification of repairmen.

• Don’t leave cash or valuables in your vehicle in plain sight and keep the doors locked.

• If you are going on vacation, ask a neighbor keep an eye out for your home and pick up your newspaper.

• Provide a list of emergency numbers for your children in case of an emergency.

• Drive slowly in the community and be alert to children playing.

• Provide a helmet and brightly colored reflective clothing for your children riding bikes.

• Alert the police to any suspicious or illegal activities.

• Most of all get to know now your neighbors and their family.

ATTENTION! Pet Poops / You Scoop Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes

when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER • Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions.

Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots.

• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away.

• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth.

• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply.

• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow.

• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap.

• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens.

• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant.

• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA • The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621.

• The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer.

• The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land.

• The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.

• President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795.

• The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817.

• Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanks giving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer.

• Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held.

• President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state.

• Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year.

• Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him.

It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson.

• The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s.

• Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States.

• When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin).

• On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock.

• By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

HAVE A PERFECT THANKSGIVING! Want to be the perfect holiday host or guest? Check out these tips on holiday entertaining: If you are the host: • Whenever anyone offers to help or bring a dish, say, “Yes, thank you!”

• Use hollowed bread loaves as serving containers for cheeses, dips, olives, chips and small sandwiches.

• Once the table settings and centerpiece are in place, sit in each chair to assure comfort • Include favorite kids’ foods, especially those they can eat neatly with their fingers.

• Provide at least one low-calorie dish and a vegetarian option. Then serve a sinful dessert.

• Completely clear the table of all dishes from previous courses before serving dessert.

• Keep club soda nearby to clean spots or stains on the tablecloth or clothing.

If you are a guest: • Arrive no earlier than the time the host has announced and no later than half an hour after the time.

November is Epilepsy Awareness Month Many people are surprised to find out that Epilepsy is as common as breast cancer and takes as many lives each year. It is a terrifying and potentially fatal disease that carries tremendous stigma.

Epilepsy affects approximately 150,000 people throughout the greater Houston, Dallas and Ft. Worth areas.

• Epilepsy and Seizures affect almost 3 MILLION Americans of all ages - more than Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy and Parkinson’s disease combined!

• 200,000 new cases of Epilepsy are diagnosed every year.

• 10% of Americans will experience a seizure at least once in their lives.

• Each year in the U.S. 45,000 children under the age of 15 develop Epilepsy.

• A patient’s first seizure will occur without warning.

• EPILEPSY IS NOT CONTAGIOUS. • Medications do not cure epilepsy, but they may help control or prevent seizures. Medications help between 50-70% of patients.

• In Texas, if you are diagnosed with Epilepsy, your doctor must certify that you are seizure free for a period of 6 months before you can drive again.

• The color for Epilepsy Awareness is Purple.

Stop That Barking!

Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity.

Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers.

If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!

• Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate.

• Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same.

• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors.

• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it.

• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

Winterizing Your Home Preparing Your Home for Winter (Source: About.com)

The fall Equinox is a good time of year to start thinking about preparing your home for winter, because as temperatures begin to dip, your home will require maintenance to keep it in tip-top shape through the winter.

Autumn is invariably a prelude to falling winter temperatures, regardless of where you live. It might rain or snow or, as David Letterman says, “Fall is my favorite season in Los Angeles, watching the birds change color and fall from the trees.” Did you know there is only one state in the United States where the temperatures have never dipped below zero? Give up? It’s Hawaii.

Here are ten tips to help you prepare your home for winter: 1) Heating System Inspection • Call an HVAC professional to inspect your furnace.

• Stock up on air filters and change them monthly.

• Consider switching out your thermostat for a programmable thermostat.

• Remove all flammable material from the area surrounding your furnace.

2) Get the Fireplace Ready • Cap or screen the top of the chimney to keep out rodents and birds.

• If the chimney hasn’t been cleaned for a while, call a chimney sweep to remove soot and creosote.

• Buy firewood or chop wood. Store it in a dry place away from the exterior of your home.

• Inspect the fireplace damper for proper opening and closing.

• Check the mortar between bricks and tuck-point, if necessary.

4) Inspect Roof, Gutters & Downspouts • If your weather temperature will fall below 32 degrees in the winter, adding extra insulation to the attic will prevent warm air from creeping to your roof and causing ice dams.

• Check flashing to ensure water cannot enter the home.

• Replace worn roof shingles or tiles.

• Clean out the gutters and use a hose to spray water down the downspouts to clear away debris.

• Consider installing leaf guards on the gutters or extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the home.

6) Check Foundations • Rake away all debris and edible vegetation from the foundation.

• Seal up entry points to keep small animals from crawling under the house.

• Tuckpoint or seal foundation cracks. Mice can slip through space as thin as a dime.

• Inspect sill plates for dry rot or pest infestation.

• Secure crawlspace entrances.

7) Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors • Some cities require a smoke detector in every room.

• Buy extra smoke detector batteries and change them when daylight savings ends.

• Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and / or water heater.

• Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they work.

• Buy a fire extinguisher or replace an extinguisher older than 10 years.

3) Check the Exterior, Doors and Windows • Inspect exterior for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes; seal them.

• Use weather-stripping around doors to prevent cold air from entering the home and caulk windows.

Fort Bend House of Hope - Bringing Healing and Restoration to Hurting Teens and Their Families House of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christcentered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you!

The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented is an advocacy organization dedicated to promoting quality educational services for the gifted students in the school district. The mission of the organization is to promote community awareness of the unique social, emotional and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students and to support the development of appropriate educational services to meet these needs. To function successfully as an advocacy organization, KPGT needs membership and volunteer support!

Funded by membership dues, KPGT publishes a quarterly newsletter, “Connections” and is now on the web! KPGT advocates for the needs of our GT students by serving on district committees, panels at state GT conferences, the Parent Advisory Board and keeping abreast of legislative issues. ECI Project TYKE is a year round Early Childhood Intervention program (ECI) in the Katy Independent School District that specializes in working with children who need extra help. The program provides developmental services to children who may need assistance in attaining developmental milestones or who may have a disability.

ECI Project TYKE develops a supportive partnership with families by providing educational and emotional supports, which enriches the daily routines and relationships that will enable their child to reach his or her maximum potential.

The Arc of Katy, a 501-C-3 non-profit organization, is devoted to enhancing the lives of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 6. Bring the Ads: Many stores offer a “lowest-price” guarantee; be sure to bring a copy of the exact product being advertised for less.

7. Know the Store Policies: Knowing the store policies on returns can help you determine where to buy. Many retailers are including restocking fees and shorter return deadlines. Almost all of the major retail chains require receipts for returns and exchanges and many keep a database of individuals who abuse return policies.

8. Gift Receipts: Gift receipts generally include a description of the item purchased but do not disclose the price paid. Including a gift-receipt should help insure a hassle-free return experience for gift recipients.

Slow Cookers are a Cook’s Best Friend

More leisure time and a homemade meal? Save money on groceries, use less electricity, and enjoy better flavor? You bet! And with a slow cooker, you don’t even have to be there while your dinner cooks.

With the invention of the original Crock-Pot® in the 1970s, we’ve been able to layer ingredients in our slow cookers, leave the house for work or play, and come home, hours later, to an inviting aroma-filled house and evening meal. Rival still manufactures the Crock-Pot®, but many other manufacturers are in the game with competitive models.

The “crockpot” moniker has become an icon for any slow cooker.

These days, choices are not limited to 2-temperature manual units; they also come programmable, with multiple time and temperature settings, countdown timers, built-in thermometers, and automatic temperature shifts to warm in case you are late getting home. There are slow cooker sizes and settings to fit your family’s individual needs.

Though shape is not necessarily a deal breaker when purchasing, it is a consideration. A money-saving attribute of slow cooking is that tougher, less expensive meats are rendered meltingly tender and juicy. Larger roasts and whole chickens fit better into an ovalshaped model and will cook more evenly, although you can trim them to fit into a round one.

It’s easy to adapt your favorite oven or stovetop recipes to slow cooker cooking. Regardless of yield, if your dish normally cooks in 15 to 30 minutes, you can count on 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours cooking in a slow cooker on High power or 4 to 6 hours on Low. If it takes 35 to 45 minutes, you should allow 2 to 3 hours on High power or 6 to 8 hours on Low. Main dishes like roasts and stews that cook up to 3 hours will take 4 to 5 hours on High or more than 8 hours on Low. For instance, Sweet Merlot Beef Stew should cook in about 4 hours on High or 8 to 10 hours on low; after you brown the meat, add everything to the slow cooker for the total cooking time, including the onions and mushrooms.

*To eliminate excess fat, remove skin from poultry and trim excess fat from meats before cooking. Pre-brown meats, and drain before adding to the crockpot, especially ground meats. *Brown chops and roasts to caramelize the outsides for richer flavor and attractive appearance. For Low Country Smothered Pork Chops, prepare the chops as directed and layer in the cooker with the strips of green pepper, onion, garlic, half of the broth, and Worcestershire.

Add more broth as needed to thin the gravy. *Vegetables, especially roots like potatoes, rutabagas, and carrots, cook more slowly than meats, so cut pieces uniformly and add them at the beginning. (It can take 8 to 10 hours on Low for a “baked” potato to cook until tender!) Italian Chicken and Vegetable Soup is a perfect example; just put all the ingredients into the slow cooker, reserving half a can of broth to add at the end of cooking, if necessary. Let it cook 2 to 2 1/2 hours on High or 4 to 6 hours on Low. *Most stews, soups, and other braised dishes require less liquid.

If you end up with too much, pour it into a saucepan and reduce it until flavorful and thickened. If you need more liquid, it can be added at the end of the cooking time. *Cheese, milk, cream, and other dairy: Add dairy products close to the end of cooking.

*Spices tend to loose their power during long, slow cooking; be ready to re-season towards the end.

*Most slow cooker liners are removable, allowing you to fill it up to a day before cooking. Remove the stone liner and assemble the casserole in it; cover and refrigerate until you are ready to cook. You can prepare Chicken and Rice Casserole ahead and cook it 1 1/2 to 2 hours on High or 4 to 6 hours on Low or until it is hot, stirring in cheese during the last hour of cooking.

Courtesy of Paula Deen Ingredients 4 slices bacon, rendered 2 lb chuck roast, cut into 2” pieces 1 1/2 t Salt Freshly ground pepper 2 T Flour1/4 C Steak Sauce 1 1/2 C Red Wine 1 1/2 C Water 1 t fresh thyme 2 Garlic Cloves, minced 1 lb Pearl onions 1/2 lb. Button Mushrooms, chopped 2 T Fresh parsley, chopped

Directions In a medium saute pan fry bacon until crisp. Remove bacon and reserve. Brown beef slowly on all sides in the bacon fat. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and flour. Toss to coat evenly.

Place beef in a heavy 4 qt. saucepan.

Add reserved bacon (chopped), Paula Deen Merlot Steak Sauce, wine, water, thyme and garlic.

Cover and cook over low heat for 1 hour. Add onions to stew and cook for an additional 30 minutes.

In the final 10 minutes, add the mushrooms and parsley. Add additional water if necessary. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve along side crusty tuscan bread for dipping.

Heat butter or oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add onion and saute until translucent, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and transfer to a large bowl.

Pour into a greased 3-quart casserole dish. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until bubbly. Let stand for a few minutes before serving.
