Parents for Success Parents let us unite! There is an increasing number of youth and children in our community. Let’s give them an opportunity to do positive things for their community, neighborhood and school. We are starting “Parents for Success” coalition. We want to partner with parents in our subdivision and other nearby subdivisions to: • Provide an avenue for connecting families with resources in our community; • Promote strong advocacy for our children’s education in Hubenak Elementary School, Westheimer Middle School, Briscoe Junior High School, Foster High School, etc.; • Support children by raising money to fund neighborhood activities, necessary supplies, donations, school programs, neighborhood programs, etc. and have; • Enrichment classes, neighborhood improvements and much more. Parents for Success activities held throughout the year will be made possible by the volunteer efforts of parents, grandparents, guardians, business owners and anyone who wants to support the children of our community. Neighborhood Safety Tips

from the Parkway Lakes Newsletter Committee Editor! We each want to do our parts to keep or families, homes and community safe. One of our homeowners reported that there were a group of teens loitering at the pool area. These teens did not belong to our neighborhood and were involved in unsafe activities. Currently we do not have a lifeguard for the pool and there is concern about the lighting in various areas. Please email me Deborahkgreen@ AOL.com if you have concerns regarding the safety and security of our community. Here are a few tips: • Make sure you keep your home secure. Doors to the outside of your home should be closed and locked for safety. This includes your garage door. Only open the door for those you know or are expecting and ask for identification and verification of repairmen.

• Don’t leave cash or valuables in your vehicle in plain sight and keep the doors locked. • If you are going on vacation, ask a neighbor keep an eye out for your home and pick up your newspaper. • Provide a list of emergency numbers for your children in case of an emergency. • Drive slowly in the community and be alert to children playing. • Provide a helmet and brightly colored reflective clothing for your children riding bikes. • Alert the police to any suspicious or illegal activities. • Most of all get to know now your neighbors and their family. ATTENTION! Pet Poops / You Scoop Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER • If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Ingredients: 2 cup crushed graham crackers 1/4 cup powdered sugar 1/2 cup butter 1 can sweetened condensed milk 8 oz. pkg. coconut (2 1/2 cups) 1 12 oz. package real chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS: Mix graham crackers, powdered sugar and melted butter and pat into 9 x 13 pan. Bake 12 minutes at 350°F. Mix condensed milk and coconut together and spread over crust. Bake 12 minutes at 350°F. Remove from oven. Sprinkle with real chocolate chips. Spread when melted. Cool and cut into squares. Source: www.cooks.com

Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter   1 Egg   1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/2 cup packed brown sugar   1 1/2 cup flour   1 cup chopped pecans

DIRECTIONS: Heat oven to 350°F. Cream butter, sugar and egg. Stir in flour, vanilla and pecans. Mix well by hand. Shape into balls about the size of walnuts, place on cookie sheets and flatten to about 1/8 inch. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until brown. US Military K-9 Fund, Inc. would like to thank our supporters, who are helping us send “care packages” designed especially for the military dogs deployed with our troops to the Middle East. We are so grateful to the Girl Scouts that have given some of their cookie money to us, Longenbaugh Vet Hospital, Rover Oaks Pet Resort, Animal Hospital Jones Road, Cypress Cares, Copperfield Women’s Club and others for enabling us to continue sending the “care packages” to the dogs that are saving lives. We are celebrating having been able to send over 150 boxes so far. And we have only just begun… With HELP from everyone who has dogs or loves dogs, we can make a difference in these dogs ability to keep our men and women safer by sensing what humans cannot. Healthy Holiday Eating Who says you’ll gain weight during the holidays? Only YOU. You can avoid the extra pounds tempting you to overeat this holiday season with one simple tool: will power. Those of us who have a flagpole on our property from which to fly the U.S. Flag should keep in mind key points of U.S. Flag etiquette, which we may have forgotten amid today’s maddening pace of life. Distilled from the U.S. Flag Code, at www.ushistory.org: The U.S. Flag, a representative symbol of a living country, should be treated as a living thing and cared for as such; • The U.S. Flag should never touch anything beneath it, including the ground; • The U.S. Flag traditionally is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset; • The U.S. Flag must be properly illuminated if flown at night; • The U.S. Flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously; • The U.S. Flag should not be displayed on days when weather is inclement; (except if it is made of all-weather material); • If a State flag is also to be flown from the same mast, the U.S. Flag must be equal to or larger than the State flag; the U.S. Flag must always be at the top on the same halyard or raised first and lowered last if flags are on separate halyards. • The flag for any country is a source of pride and inspiration for the people. It deserves a certain amount of respect. The flag should be properly folded and cared for when not flown. • When proclamation by The President or Governor is given for the U.S. Flag to be flown at half-mast, the flag is first hoisted to the peak, then lowered to halfmast for the day. At the time for lowering, the flag is first raised to the peak and then lowered, (The exception is Memorial Day: The flag is flown at half-mast only until noon. At noon, the flag is again raised to the top and lowered at end of day).

Beat the Holiday Blues Check out these few tips on how to beat the holiday blues and be happy! • Be realistic. Some people experience not enough family, fun, and friendship so be kind to yourself. • Create your own traditions. As families change and grow, traditions change, too. As long as you do the traditions with a joyful heart, the celebrations you create will become your family’s cherished rituals. • Help others. It is the best antidote to self-pity and seasonal sadness. Find someone who is struggling more than you are, lend them a helping hand and remember the real meaning of the holidays. • Seek sacred space. Visit a place of worship. Simply sitting in a sacred space can remind you of the true meaning of the holidays. • Take care of your body. Eat well, drink plenty of water, exercise and get plenty of rest. The littlest bit of movement will lift your spirits and reducing the amount of junk food, sugar and alcohol you consume will reduce your blues. • Be financially responsible. Overspending during the holidays will not only increase your stress now, but will also leave you feeling anxious as you struggle to pay the bills. Buck the holiday system of excessive gift-giving and practice simplicity, creativity and basic human kindness. • Grieve. If a friend or family member has recently died, honor their memory. Create an altar with pictures of those you love; light candles every night for someone you have lost; play sacred music and allow yourself to cry, remember, heal. • Forgive. Forgive all sorts of people this holiday season. Read the stories of who have used forgiveness to move mountains. If they can do it, so can we. • Love... everything. Love it all. From the corny Christmas music to the house guests who won’t leave. Love even the hard times; even the cranky and crooked people of the world; even yourself, with all of your imperfections.

HOW TO HOST A COOKIE EXCHANGE ON A BUDGET 1. Send Evites or emails to guests in order to save money on the cost of invitations and postage. If you ask each guest to bring 6-dozen cookies and there are ten people at the exchange that means you’ll have 720 cookies. Assuming each person takes home 5-dozen cookies, you will still have 120 leftover for tasting. It is important to let the guests know the exact amount of cookies to bring.

2. Invite moms only, if possible. This way, you’re not distracted by having to follow toddlers around and you don’t feel compelled to serve snacks for kids of varying ages. 3. Nearly all types of cookies work well for a cookie exchange, though it’s best to avoid any that are extremely delicate as they can get crushed by the sturdier kinds. It’s also a good idea to steer clear of cookies that need to be refrigerated, such as lemon bars. 4. You want to know the ingredients that raise the price of certain cookie recipes? Nuts, chocolate, and liqueur – just to name a few. Mexican wedding cakes are delicious, for example, but the pecans alone can cost $6 for half a pound. If you really want to make a pricey cookie like mini pecan pie tarts, go ahead, but just shape or cut them smaller. 5. If you don’t have the time or the inclination to roll and cut out dough, simply dress up old favorites like chocolate chip drop cookies by sprinkling them with red or green colored sugar. A bottle of decorating sugar costs under $3 and will last you. 7. Another budget-priced cookie is the bar cookie. Make a batch of brownies from a mix and add a teaspoon of mint extract. Make an easy icing (confectioners’ sugar, a tablespoon of butter and milk) and tint it green using food coloring, with a dash of mint extract added for flavor.. You can add red sprinkles or chocolate jimmies, just to add that little extra something. 8. Flavor extracts are inexpensive, but can add a lot of flavor. Make thumbprint cookies, but add a teaspoon of rum extract to the dough and half a teaspoon of rum extract to the icing. Or, add mint extract to your basic sugar cookie dough, roll out into candy cane shapes and bake. After you frost them, top with candy canes that you have crushed in the food processor or blender. 9. Try putting a holiday spin on economical old favorites like Rice Krispies treats. When you stir the cereal into the melted butter-andmarshmallow mixture, add green, red, or a combination of both colored sprinkles to the mixture. Spread it into a greased pan and cut into diamond shapes when cool. You can also flatten these out and use a cookie cutter to cut into trees, bells or ornaments. 10. When it comes to inexpensive food coloring, a little goes a long way. Color basic snickerdoodle or sugar cookie dough green, roll them out into little balls and place on a baking sheet. For beautiful holiday thumbprint cookies, make a tiny indentation in each cookie before baking and fill it with raspberry or strawberry jam. 11. If you’re really pressed for time, to the point where time is money, don’t be afraid to buy the refrigerated rolls of cookie dough and infuse them with your own special touches. Top chocolate chip

cookies with some unwrapped, melted caramels, mini marshmallows and chocolate-coated chocolate candies, then bake another minute or until the marshmallows are golden – no one is likely to have also made this creative and delicious treat. 12. Keep the refreshments light. For an afternoon cookie exchange you can serve tea, coffee (add a cinnamon stick to the coffee before you brew it) and maybe hot cider (buy the store brand by the gallon and warm it on the stove or in a slow cooker, with a couple of cinnamon sticks.) Have a bowl of seasonal fruit (grapes and clementines provide color) and maybe a wedge or two of a not so costly cheese for those that need a break from the sweets.

Have everyone in your exchange bring just one or two extra dozen cookies and you can make up plates of cookies for homebound elderly or residents at homeless shelters. Encourage everyone to bring some canned food and you can donate these to a local soup kitchen, as well. After the party has cleared and you present your family with a huge tray of holiday treats, they will be thrilled. Two Churches, One Message: LDS and Catholic Churches Present Annual Christmas Concert The combined choirs of Epiphany Catholic Church and the Katy Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will present their annual Christmas concert on Sunday, December 11, 2011, 7:30 PM, at Epiphany Catholic Church - 1603 Norwalk Drive in Katy. CRHS student Christin Vogel Earns Silver Award Christin Vogel, a member of Girl Scout Troop 17229, recently earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest recognition a Cadette Girl Scout can achieve. Her project consisted of conducting book drives and creating activity kits. Christin held two different book drives. The children’s books were donated to the Harris County Hospital District. The teens’ books were donated to the Krause Center in Katy. The activity kits were assembled and divided according to age and gender; they benefitted the children coming into Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus Emergency Center. Christin also donated band-aids, stickers and bubbles to the TCH Emergency Center. Christin completed her Silver Award project earlier this year, while she was in the eighth grade. Christin is currently a freshman at Cinco Ranch High School.

Pack 780 Cub Scouts Tour Texas Children’s Hospital The Webelos Den (10-year-olds) from Cub Scout Pack 780 recently toured the Emergency Room of the West Houston campus of Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Todd Johnson, a physician at the hospital and a father of one of the Scouts, led the tour. While in the hospital, the boys learned about different life saving equipment and procedures and also practiced first aid techniques. Pack 780 is chartered by a congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the South Katy area. All boys ages 8-10 are welcome to join. PACK 542 HONORS THOMAS PARK WITH A TREE FOR ARBOR DAY Thomas Park in Old Katy will be a little more colorful this fall thanks to efforts of the Cub Scouts of Pack 542. The Scouts spent a sunny Sunday afternoon planting a tree in honor of Arbor Day. Not only will the tree planting help beautify Thomas Park, but it helped the Scouts develop a sense of community involvement and giving back through service to the community. The kids put some effort into life and they will see the benefits down the road, especially when they return to visit the Park after many years.

CRHS student Andrew Vogel Earns Eagle Rank

Andrew Vogel, a member of Boy Scout Troop 73, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle project, Andrew resurfaced part of the walking trails of the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. By covering up the existing crushed concrete with decomposed granite, the resurfacing project offers universal accessibility to people in wheelchairs, children in strollers and emergency vehicles. Andrew has held numerous leadership positions within his troop, such as Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader and Order of the Arrow Representative. He is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. He has also earned over 100 merit badges. Andrew completed his Eagle project earlier this year, while he was in the tenth grade. Andrew is currently a junior at Cinco Ranch High School. Troop 73 is chartered through Memorial Lutheran Church of Katy.

Volunteers and Brookwood Residents enjoy a Bike Rally at the Brookwood Community.

Katy LDS Churches Join with Brookwood Community for Bike Rally On October 16th, Katy congregations from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) joined with the Brookwood Community for a special bike rally and carnival. The Brookwood Community is a residential facility and vocational program for adults with disabilities. The bike rally or BW15 provided residents with a fun, inclusive bike ride. Some Brookwood residents rode tandem bikes with volunteers from the churches. Others rode independently on either regular or specially modified bikes.

Church members from the Katy 3rd and 4th wards, two congregations from the south Katy area, provided food and drinks for the participants. The LDS volunteers also came to support the residents with cheering and encouragement. After the bike rally, the Katy churches provided a carnival with games and activities for the residents at the Brookwood community. This event was part of a broader Houston-wide “Day of Service” in which many Houston area Latter-day Saint congregations participated. The Brookwood community is located in Brookshire, Texas and provides an educational environment that creates meaningful jobs, builds a sense of belonging and demands dignity and respect for adults with disabilities. Houston Fire Fighters Making Houston the City with the Biggest Heart FOR MDA It’s official, Houstonians through the Houston Fire Fighters raised a record breaking $509,961 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association making them the #1 Fill-the-Boot department in the country for the last 9 out of 10 years raising more than $6.3 million during that time. For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. The next training will be in January. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community.
