Official Newsletter of
Settler’s Village
A NOTE From the Settlers Village Board of Directors
From all of the Directors of the HOA – we hope the New Year is looking like it will treat you well. Steve Breard is writing this newsletter. Particularly after the holidays, we often get into a bit of a funk. The glow of the season, of family, of general contentment fades as we once again have to face the realities of our day to day issues. We have less patience with people, even friends and family. In the past, I have shared with you the struggles my wife and I have had in dealing with her Multiple Sclerosis (MS). I know she struggles because the disease has robbed her of mobility and independence as well as some of her personal dignity. While it should not in any way, her disease and its symptoms embarrass her. Hence my own struggle of trying to help her in any and every way while knowing there are some things that I will not be able to help with. It truly breaks my heart when she is having a very bad day and her legs will not work at all. Add to that my limited financial resources since being laid off last year, some of the problems compound. Enter some unexpected angels. The first was an organization call NORD who agreed to take on the co-pays for her MS treatments. Those co-pays are literally hundreds of dollars per month and Nord is a charitable organization that helps MS patients with limited resources. Without them, I would have had difficulty paying for the treatments. Then here come friends from wife’s childhood. She has always stayed in contact with them but she is no longer able to accompany them on most social outings. This week, they fronted resources to rehabilitate the master bathroom to give my wife wheelchair access. Right now, we have cobbled together a process where she changes from a wheelchair or walker outside the restroom, to another walker inside the restroom. Although a bit clumsy, it is a process that works. They will also remove the glass shower enclosure, which will improve bathtub access. We installed that back when my wife’s condition did not exist and now it is a danger, particularly if she falls into it and the glass breaks. For all of my life, I have volunteered to help others, from those I do not know, to friends, to various family members. And I will be the first to admit that my own pride made it hard to accept help from others. It took a little convincing from those trying to help. But I am, at the end, very practical and these things were needed help as I slowly make the house we have lived in accessible to the handicapped. There is much more to go but at least I have been able to make a start. Although I do not have permission to publish their names, I will take the opportunity to say thank you to them anyway. And God bless them all! Current monies saved toward the pool project have reached $307,000. Again, as a reminder, the original plan was to build the pool in stages to keep from straining the neighborhood’s budget. Unfortunately, replacing the pool requires the replacement of the filtering equipment and both the water supply and wastewater plumbing and piping. That, in turn, requires immediate attention to the building, which would house the filtering facilities. And because rework would be needed to bring the electrical up to code which is legally required by any extensive renovation to the building, the project will have to be structured into a single, large project. The minimum needed in the bank before beginning the project would be $472,000 or 80% of the total projected project’s cost. President Rogers remains interested in resurrecting the Settlers Village website and the old Citizen On Patrol (COP) programs but has, so far, received no volunteers for either project. Please shoot him an email if you have an interest.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through FEBRUARY. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER The Harris County MUD #105 Board (completely a separate legal entity from the Settlers Village Board of Directors) met on December 14th and 19th and Stanley Craig was accepted as the District’s newest Director. Mr. Craig is the first District director from outside of Settlers Village. The new Board is as follows: Steve Breard - President Charles LaConti - Vice President Stanley Craig - Assistant Vice-President Cathy Cones - Secretary Pam Brandenburg - Assistant Secretary All are residents and property owners within the district. The MUD Board can be contacted via their attorney Taylor Goodall of Smith, Murdaugh, Little & Bonham at 713-652-6500. Water supplies have stabilized with the 3 supporting districts being able to provide needed supplies while MUD #105 works through its well issues. As noted previously, the Drought Alert has been reduced and sprinklers usage is now allowed although the limitations as to the days and times of usage remain. Well #1, which has had the radiation issues and is located off Liberty Valley, has been permanently capped. A new well on the same property accessing uncontaminated strata is in the works. The replacement ground storage tank in that facility is almost complete. The arsenic remediation equipment for well #2 is in the process of being installed and remains on schedule to be operational by February 2012. The West Harris County Regional Water Authority (WHCRWA) has met its 2010 goal of converting 30% of the groundwater usage to surface water. The next goal is to push the conversion goal to 70% by 2020. The WHCRWA district encompasses 118 municipal utility districts including our own.

Please remember that keeping your yard maintained is one of the least expensive methods available to help your property values. While water is in short supply to keep things green, you can still take the time to mow and edge, weed your flowerbeds and trim back trees and bushes, especially where they affect common right-of-ways. Other simple things you can do are to pick up litter from your yard and fronting street(s), put your trashcans out of sight when not needed and keep children’s toys picked up. Please also remember the rules regarding personal sign postings. The placing of private signs of any type onto county owned sign poles or Centerpoint owned light poles is expressly prohibited per Texas House bill. Please do not subject yourself to the embarrassment of having your signs removed by the HOA or having a deputy come tell you that they must be removed. Jurisdiction for enforcement is shared by the Harris County JP and District courts. Lastly, a quick reminder that Steve Breard is still collecting aluminum cans for the neighborhood with all proceeds going to the capital improvement fund for our pool. In 2009 we collected $130 and in 2010 we collected $278. We collected $194 at last count in 2011. Please rinse and bag the cans to minimize the attraction to bugs. They can be dropped at 6642 Cove Lake. 13 THINGS YOUR BURGLAR WON’T TELL YOU: 1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters or delivering your new refrigerator. 2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier. 3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste ... and taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have. 4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it. 5. If it snows while you’re out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway. 6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don’t let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it’s set. That makes it too easy. 7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom - and your jewelry. It’s not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too. 8. It’s raining, you’re fumbling with your umbrella and you forget to lock your door - understandable. But understand this: I don’t take a day off because of bad weather. 9. I always knock first. If you answer, I’ll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don’t take me up on it.) 10. Do you really think I won’t look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table and the medicine cabinet. 11. Here’s a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids’ rooms. 12. You’re right: I won’t have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it’s not bolted down, I’ll take it with me. 13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you’re reluctant to leave your TV on while you’re out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at www.faketv.com) 8 MORE THINGS A BURGLAR WON’T TELL YOU: 1. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook. 2. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors. 3. I’ll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he’ll stop what he’s doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn’t hear it again, he’ll just go back to what he was doing. It’s human nature.

4. I’m not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it? 5. I love looking in your windows. I’m looking for signs that you’re home and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I’d like. I’ll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets. 6. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It’s easier than you think to look up your address. 7. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it’s an invitation. 8. If you don’t answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in. As always, if you see anything or anyone that looks suspicious or out of place, please call the deputies to investigate at 713-463-6666 or use 911 if it is an emergency. Deputies do not need to come by your house is you feel that might cause problems or endanger your family. Please remember to abide by the laws the legislature has put into place regarding personal signage. It is very embarrassing to have an officer show up at your home to remind you the practice of placing personal signage on county owned sign poles and Centerpoint owned streetlights is not allowed. Anyone under 17 years of age is subject to the county’s curfew and must be off the streets between midnight and 6 AM. Officers will either arrest offenders or take them home to their parents.

funds to reduce the effects of heart disease in women.
BERYL RAMSEY AND WAYNE VOSS TO CHAIRGO RED FOR WOMEN LUNCHEON
CEO of Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, Beryl Ramsey, returns to Chair the Go Red For Women Luncheon in partnership with CEO of Methodist West Houston Hospital, Wayne Voss. Together, Ramsey and Voss will serve as Co-Chairs and lead efforts to raise awareness that heart disease remains the number one killer of women, but is often preventable with healthy lifestyle choices.
Today, only 1 in 5 women believe that heart disease is their greatest health threat. More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next three causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. Go Red for Women celebrates the energy, passion and power that women can use to band together to wipe out heart disease and stroke. To secure a sponsorship, purchase tables and/or tickets, or for further information, contact Priscilla Luna at 713-610-5071 or email priscilla. luna@heart.org. For more information about Go Red For Women, visit GoRedForWomen.org or call 1-888-MY-HEART. Go Red For Women is sponsored nationally by Macy’s and Merck & Co., Inc.
This year’s luncheon will be held on Monday, Feb. 13th at the Berry Center in Cy-Fair and is expected to draw more than 400 business and community leaders. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn tips on heart disease and stroke prevention from local experts, listen to a heart-warming story of survival from an area resident, participate in interactive breakout displays and shop the “purse-onalities” silent auction. The silent auction is a unique piece of the luncheon that features items representative of the diverse personalities of the community. Purses can be anything from actual handbags to golf bags to briefcases. This year’s auction will include something for everyone!
About the American Heart Association The American Heart Association is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Our mission is to build healthier lives by preventing, treating and defeating these diseases - America’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers. We fund cutting-edge research, conduct lifesaving public and professional educational programs, and advocate to protect public health. To learn more or join us in helping all Americans, call 1-800-AHA-USA1 or visit americanheart.org.
Melissa Wilson of Fox 26 Morning News will emcee the event and Dr. Valentina Ugolini of Willowbrook Cardiovascular Associates will be the featured medical speaker.
The Knights of Columbus Council 8096 of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church invite you to attend our 26th Charity Las Vegas Night.
Ramsey and Voss and their team of volunteers have a goal of raising a record-breaking $200,000 to support educational programs that the American Heart Association provides and the life-saving research it
The event will be held on February 18, 2012, from 7:00 PM until 10:30 PM, at the church, 6646 Addicks Satsuma, in the Community Life Center.

CWC - Women Serving the Community
The Cy-Fair Women’s Club held its first business meeting for the year on January 5th. On February 2nd, we plan to continue our business meeting and hope to play Bunco if time permits. During the beginning portion of our February meeting we will have Nancie Craft visit with our group to offer us great deals for Rodeo Carnival Tickets. We are looking forward to visiting with her. CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community, so all funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community, as well. Membership for the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ. Our meetings begin with social time and refreshments at 7:00 PM immediately followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at the corner of Queenston and West Road. Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships. We look forward to meeting you! If you have any questions about our club or need directions to the church, please contact Susan McLeroy, Membership Chair at sudomac@comcast.net.
