Lost and Found Pets We have had great success in Seven Meadows re-connecting pet owners with their pets when they are lost. Many thanks to a resident for taking the lead by establishing the central email of sevenmeadowspets@aol.com. If you have found or lost a pet, please email a description of the pet and the location as well as attach a picture. A resident from Grand Lakes is to be commended for her efforts that also benefit Seven Meadows community. Her email is GrandLakes4pets@aol.com. Another way to reconnect is to use the website, www.sevenmeadowslive.com and list the pet on the Lost & Found Pets message board and on the classified. Both allow you to add a picture. As they say – a picture says 1000 words!

Is your house safe? Do you wonder if your house is safe from robbers? Crime Prevention Officer, Gerard Argao, offers a free service to inspect your home - inside and out - and give you tips and if qualified, a certificate that can give you a discount on your home insurance. Neighborhood Watch Team If you plan to go on vacation, it is important to prepare your home before you head out the door. • Hold mail and newspaper delivery or have a neighbor pick it up for you. One of the telltale signs of “nobody is home” is a pile of newspapers on your sidewalk. • Tell a neighbor when you are going to be gone and give them a contact number in case they need to reach you. • Complete a vacation watch form online with the Ft. Bend County Sheriff at www.co.fort-bend.tx.us/vacationForm.asp or by calling the dispatcher at 281-341-4666. • For a full list of vacation preparation tips, go to www.sevenmeadowslive.com, sign in and go to the Neighborhood Watch Team Group site and download the document under vacation tips. Be a good neighbor – if you notice that your neighbor may be out of town and has not done all of above, take the initiative and make sure their newspapers are picked up and take a walk around and make sure things are secure. Neighbors watching neighbors is the key component of Neighborhood Watch. Do you know your neighbors? Do you know who your block captain is? One of the goals of the NW Team is to create a community where you know your neighbor. Neighbors watching their neighbors’ homes makes a safer place to live. Getting to know your neighbors makes a community where people enjoy living. Block parties are another way to get a group of neighbors together. They don’t have to be limited to once a year.

2

The NW Team meets monthly on the third Thursday at 7 PM and the following Friday at 10 AM at the clubhouse. The Team hopes that by providing both a night time and a day time meeting that more block captains and residents will attend the meetings. Seven Meadows Patrol Officer Jake Medve and Ft. Bend County Sheriff’s Department Crime Prevention Gerard Argao are usually there to answer any questions and make a report. All residents are welcome. The NW Team sends out alerts when there is suspicious activity or crime in the area. It helps us stay informed and alert. To find out how you can get involved, go to the website www.sevenmeadowslive.com or email Lorraine Rabuse, membership coordinator, at lrabuse@entouch.net.

Streetlight out? If your streetlight is out. • go to the pole • get the number off the pole (should be vertical at eye level) • go home and go to www.centerpointenergy.com/outage • enter your information and the pole number • if you would like to know when it has been received and fixed, check the box to get the email notice And in a few days the light should be fixed. Thanks for being a good neighbor and keeping our neighborhood safe and bright! Home Owners Association Meetings The HOA Board meets every other month. The schedule is posted on the website and is subject to change. So be sure to check the website regularly.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER • If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

This win-win fundraiser means students have great books to read and school has additional funding. Librarian Mitzie Cross plans to spend the extra cash on: organizing three authors to meet students at school; more books for the Library; accelerated reader tests and prizes; and new technology equipment. Whole families had the opportunity to shop together in Griffin’s library, as the school was celebrating Grandparents week.

SUPER BOWL COMES TO GRIFFIN ELEMENTARY

Over 200 5th graders played in Griffin’s 5th annual Super Bowl. The large crowd of families, teachers and fellow students enthusiastically supported the football teams. Since the beginning of term MGE’s P.E. coaches have taught students the rules, team positions, strategy and tactics. Excitement about the game has been building for weeks. Enthusiastic teams of boys and girls hustled on and off the field, called their own plays and enjoyed participating in a thrilling competition. The boys’ Green Giants and the girls’ Orange Crush teams were victorious. But the day was really about celebrating sport, teamwork and having a blast. The fabulous half time performance by 5th grade teachers and the Beckendorff Jr. High cheerleaders added to the fun. As did the Griffin Grizzly bear mascot acting as the assistant referee. Griffin is one of only two Katy elementary schools to host a Super Bowl. It’s a major undertaking and Griffin would like to thank Richmond Bone and Joint, Ozarka and PTA volunteers.

Many of the present-day holiday rituals in our country originate in the Nordic/German traditions and come flavored with the spices of Europe. We invite you to take a little journey to early nineteenthcentury Bavaria and the surrounding regions to explore the roots of modern Christmas.

CRHS student Christin Vogel Earns Silver Award Christin Vogel, a member of Girl Scout Troop 17229, recently earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest recognition a Cadette Girl Scout can achieve. Her project consisted of conducting book drives and creating activity kits. Christin held two different book drives. The children’s books were donated to the Harris County Hospital District. The teens’ books were donated to the Krause Center in Katy. The activity kits were assembled and divided according to age and gender; they benefitted the children coming into Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus Emergency Center. Christin also donated band-aids, stickers and bubbles to the TCH Emergency Center. Christin completed her Silver Award project earlier this year, while she was in the eighth grade. The Scouts spent a sunny Sunday afternoon planting a tree in honor of Arbor Day. Not only will the tree planting help beautify Thomas Park, but it helped the Scouts develop a sense of community involvement and giving back through service to the community. The kids put some effort into life and they will see the benefits down the road, especially when they return to visit the Park after many years.

Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. We have certified F.AM.I.L.Y. Rules Counselors available to assist you.

Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. The next training will be in January. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www. ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”

RUOK Program

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.
