Recycle Program The recycle program has been met with great participation. The collection amount has increased from 1 to 1 1/2 loads a week to 5-6 loads every other. Service days will be 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. This is a change from the previous schedule of weekly. On your collection day, please set the cart at the curbside (within 5 ft. of the roadway/curb) by 7 AM. It will then be emptied by an Automated Side-Load Truck. Wheel-side of cart should face your home and the cart opening toward the street. For more information on the recycle program go to our website, www.sevenmeadowslive.com.
Neighborhood Watch Team If you plan to go on vacation, it is important to prepare your home before you head out the door. • Hold mail and newspaper delivery or have a neighbor pick it up for you. One of the telltale signs of “nobody is home” is a pile of newspapers on your sidewalk. • Tell a neighbor when you are going to be gone and give them a contact number in case they need to reach you. • Complete a vacation watch form online with the Ft. Bend County Sheriff at www.co.fort-bend.tx.us/vacationForm.asp or by calling the dispatcher at 281-341-4666. • For a full list of vacation preparation tips, go to www.sevenmeadowslive.com, sign in and go to the Neighborhood Watch Team Group site and download the document under vacation tips. Be a good neighbor – if you notice that your neighbor may be out of town and has not done all of above, take the initiative and make sure their newspapers are picked up and take a walk around and make sure things are secure. Neighbors watching neighbors is the key component of Neighborhood Watch.
Do you know your neighbors? Do you know who your block captain is? One of the goals of the NW Team is to create a community where you know your neighbor. Neighbors watching their neighbors’ homes makes a safer place to live. Getting to know your neighbors makes a community where people enjoy living. Block parties are another way to get a group of neighbors together. They don’t have to be limited to once a year. The NW Team meets monthly on the third Thursday at 7 PM and the following Friday at 10 AM at the clubhouse. The Team hopes that by providing both a night time and a day time meeting that more block captains and residents will attend the meetings. Seven Meadows Patrol Officer Jake Medve and Ft. Bend County Sheriff’s Department Crime Prevention Gerard Argao are usually there to answer any questions and make a report. All residents are welcome. The NW Team sends out alerts when there is suspicious activity or crime in the area. It helps us stay informed and alert. To find out how you can get involved, go to the website www.sevenmeadowslive.com or email Lorraine Rabuse, membership coordinator, at lrabuse@entouch.net.
Is your house safe? Do you wonder if your house is safe from robbers? Crime Prevention Officer, Gerard Argao, offers a free service to inspect your home - inside and out - and give you tips and if qualified, a certificate that can give you a discount on your home insurance. For more information, contact Officer Gerard at 281-594-0801 or argaoger@co.fort-bend.tx.us.

Lost and Found Pets
We have had great success in Seven Meadows re-connecting pet owners with their pets when they are lost. Many thanks to a resident for taking the lead by establishing the central email of sevenmeadowspets@aol.com. If you have found or lost a pet, please email a description of the pet and the location as well as attach a picture. A resident from Grand Lakes is to be commended for her efforts that also benefit Seven Meadows community. Her email is GrandLakes4pets@aol.com. Another way to reconnect is to use the website, www.sevenmeadowslive.com and list the pet on the Lost & Found Pets message board and on the classified. Both allow you to add a picture. As they say – a picture says 1000 words!
Home Owners Association Meetings
The HOA Board meets every other month. The schedule is posted on the website and is subject to change. So be sure to check the website regularly.

Register for the Residential Directory
New to the website is an old favorite – Residential Directory. The Resident Directory will appear as a new tab on the left, once you log on.
Personalized Service 281-395-0182
The Directory will initially will be blank. Residents will have to OPT IN to the directory.* Again, the Directory is only visible after logging on the site. (*Due to privacy and legal concerns, the directories are opt in only to ensure that someone who does not want their personal information displayed doesn’t have to opt out for it to be hidden). There is a disclaimer when opting in that lets residents know their information will be displayed to residents of the community. In addition, on the Resident Directory page, there is a statement that informs residents that the information is not to be used for marketing purposes. To OPT IN: Click on View Profile. Click Edit and then click the box to be added in the directory. Once in, go to the directory, click on your name and you will be able to add or remove information such as phone numbers, business information, activities, photos (limited to 200X200 in size for now—.jpeg or animated .gif), village name, etc. Then click submit changes. The instructions for opting in also appear at the top of the Resident Directory page. Currently, the search option is only by last name. As the directory becomes populated, we can add in other search options such as section or street name.

Rose Color Meanings You may gift your Valentine with roses. Did you know that each rose color has a different meaning? Check it out: • Red Red roses are the traditional symbol for love and romance and a time-honored way to say “I love you.” The red rose has long symbolized beauty and perfection. A bouquet of red roses is the perfect way to express your deep feelings for someone special. • Pink As a symbol of grace and elegance, the pink rose is often given as an expression of admiration. Pink roses can also convey appreciation as well as joyfulness. Pink rose bouquets often impart a gentler meaning than their red counterparts. • Yellow The bright, sunny color of yellow roses evokes a feeling of warmth and happiness. The warm feelings associated with the yellow rose are often akin to those shared with a true friend. As such, the yellow rose is an ideal symbol for joy and friendship. • White White roses represent innocence and purity and are traditionally associated with marriages and new beginnings. The white rose is also a symbol of honor and reverence, and white rose arrangements are often used as an expression of remembrance. • Orange With their blazing energy, orange roses are the embodiment of desire and enthusiasm. Orange roses often symbolize passion and excitement and are an expression of fervent romance. A bouquet of orange roses will send a meaningful message. • Lavender The unique beauty of the lavender rose has captured many hearts and imaginations. With their fantastical appearance, lavender roses are a perfect symbol of enchantment. The lavender rose is also traditionally used to express feelings of love at first sight.

This year they are moving to a bigger venue and hope to have more children making cards for the kids at MD Anderson. Bingo Fundraiser on Saturday, March 3rd at 6 pm at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Old Katy. The event will start with an enchilada dinner from 5-6 pm for $6 for anyone who is interested. The Bingo Fundraiser is $25 per person for 12 games (on 9 cards for each game) with a free bingo dauber for each player. For more information, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com. Second Saturday Aluminum Can Collection - If you live in the Houston Area, please consider participating in our “Cans for a Cure” Recycling Program. The second Saturday of each month, Keep Kids Connected collects aluminum beverage cans at the Tradition Bank Pin Oak Branch location from 9 am-12 pm. The proceeds from recycling the cans helps fund the purchase of Netbook computers and pediatric cancer research. Invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to support this recycling pro-gram and donate their aluminum cans to Keep Kids Connected.
Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission. For more information about Keep Kids Connected go to the website, www.keepkidsconnected.org or check out their Facebook page! If you would like to get on the contact list for upcoming events, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com.

LIBRARIES ANNOUNCE ADDITION OF FAMILY READING CLUB THIS WINTER
The popularity of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Summer Reading Clubs for children, teens and adults has inspired the library system to add a similar program for families during the winter season. The Family Reading Club began on Saturday, January 21, 2012 and will continue for six weeks through March 3, 2012 at all branches in the Fort Bend County library system. This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who read 36 books or 6 hours – 6 books per week or 60 minutes per week – will be entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 5, 2012. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website and clicking on the “Family Reading Club SignUp” image, which will become available January 20, 2012. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system. For more information, call the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677 or the library branch nearest you.

Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. The next training will be in March. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. RUOK Program Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.
ATTENTION! Pet Poops / You Scoop Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.

Real conversation is not a contest but makes room for many voices whose tone is not violent or abusive but instead as Michael Oakeshott said “humble and conversable.” It offers “the gift of the interval:” when we “look around upon the world without the sense of an enemy at one’s back or the insistent pressure to make up one’s mind.” If you enjoy real conversation about current issues and events with a group having diverse backgrounds and perspectives, join us for a cup of coffee on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in room 303 of the Parish Activity Center from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The Pearl Harbor Remembrance ceremony was led by Colonel (Ret) Mike Mastrangelo, Commander, VFW Post 9182. Commander Mastrangelo stands next to the World War II section of the newly renovated military museum, which is open to the public, located on George Bush Drive, in Katy, Texas. Colonel (Ret) Mike Mastranglo, Commander, VFW Post 9182, addresses the local boy scouts, veterans and the public. Members share their memories from World War II. Many can be heard from the audience reciting the words from President Roosevelt’s address on December 8, 1941, from memory, as the recording is being played for all in attendance. Others share their memories of military service during World War II and their thoughts about visiting the USS Arizona Pearl Harbor Memorial in Hawaii after the war.
PEARL HARBOR REMEMBERED AT VFW Fifteen hundred (1,500) civilians perished on this day, December 7, 1941, known as Pearl Harbor Day, in the premeditated invasion against the United States by the Japanese. There was wide spread fear in the United States, as the US was caught virtually unprepared and paid a horrific price. President Roosevelt addressed the Congress the next day and rallied the American people. Four years later the United States received an unconditional surrender and World War II ended in 1945. World War II stretched from 1940 to 1945. There are 405,399 recorded deaths and 670,846 wounded. Totaling 1,076,845 dead and wounded. Photos taken by Rodney Smith, VFW Photographer

May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are.
