NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

Sundown Glen held National Night Out on Tuesday October 4th. The businesses that donated prizes were Big Daddy’s BBQ, Chick-fil-A, S.J. Air Conditioning and Heating, Simply Splendid Donuts and Kolaches, Texas Borders Bar & Grill, 3 Salsas Mexican Restaurant and Cantina. Remember to thank those who donated and supported our subdivision. We would like to thank the following volunteers who helped; Linda B, Jackie G, Kimmy G, Xylah G, Dan H, Janelle H, Pat H, Katie K, Gloria R and especially Scott (a teenager) who came and just pitched in and helped with cleanup.

ANNUAL BOARD MEETING

The annual Board meeting was held on October 17th. There were three people elected to the Board of Directors. Katie Kriesel and Robert Wilson were re-elected.

Diane Parker was elected also. Welcome Diane. The HOA Board kept dues the same for 2012. Thank you as everything else is going up. At the meeting there were several good ideas brought before the board. A big thank you goes out for all who attended. We would like to thank Gloria Rios for her 4 year service on the Board.

YARD of the MONTH

The Alvarado family at 2931 Fort Stockton Drive were the winners for October Yard of the Month. The sign is placed in the yard for a month and the winner receives a gift card in appreciation for keeping their yard in great shape.

SENIOR SOCIAL GROUP

CLUBHOUSE RENTALS

Rentals are done by contacting Pat Hillen at 281-578-6881. Fees are $75 for a 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM event and $150 for a 12:00 PM – 10:00 PM event on a first come, first served basis. The security deposit is $300. The clubhouse holds 98 people, has 4 six foot tables, 4 eight foot tables and 48 chairs. Hand soap, hand towels, toilet paper and a trash can liner for each trashcan is provided. The clubhouse has a kitchen with refrigerator, stove and microwave oven, men’s and women’s restroom with a diaper changing table. Resident must be current on all dues to rent the clubhouse. Resident must be present at clubhouse at all times during their event. No alcohol of any type is allowed in the clubhouse. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!

HOLIDAY DECORATING CONTEST

Judging for the holiday displays will be Friday, December 16th with a rain date of Saturday, December 17th. Please have your displays lit up on both nights. There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners selected.

SENIORS ARE RETIRED

The senior group has officially retired from volunteering. They will not be decorating the subdivision for the holidays or putting on the holiday party. The group has asked for someone to take over these areas. No one has stepped forward to help. They have other areas that they are now investing their time in.

Residents, “NO TRESPASSING” “DANGER KEEP OUT” These signs are there for a reason, please obey!

No one is to be in or around the detention pond playing, riding their bikes or motorized vehicle, climbing or crawling in the pipes this is very dangerous. No trash or clippings of trees and grass is to be dumped in the pond.

Any injury sustained while playing in or around the detention pond will be the responsibility of the parent.

Anyone being in or throwing trash in the detention pond will be charged with Criminal Trespassing subject to a fine or jail by the Sheriff.

These ponds are to help our subdivision in rain and flood. The detention ponds will hopefully help our homes from being flooded.

All street lights were checked and repaired. You can call in light outages by getting the pole number and calling Crest Management at 281-579-0761.

GOT TRASH?

Trash pickup days are Tuesday and Friday every week. We would like to remind all of our subdivision residents that your trash (cans) should only be visible on these days. Trash left out for days has a tendency to be blown all over the neighborhood and can be a real eyesore. Thank you for helping keep our neighborhood clean.

We love our community and so should you! Besides being a nuisance, uncollected dog waste is a serious problem for our Association. Next time you’re tempted to leave your dog’s droppings on the lawn, please remember these facts: • The Environmental Protection Agency is becoming aggressive

about enforcing the Clean Water Act. Our Association could be fined if dog waste goes uncollected.

• Uncollected dog waste may lead to a special assessment. If fined by the EPA, the Association could face a potential special assessment that would be levied against all members - not just dog owners.

• The appearance and quality of the common areas are known to affect home sales - not just for how much they sell, but how quickly.

• The more residents complain about dog waste, the more time the manager must spend on enforcement rather than serving the Association.

• Uncollected dog waste spreads disease and attracts rodents who feed on pet waste.

• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.

We love dogs - we really do. That’s why the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law on association property. According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years. Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you.

• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.

• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again.

• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.

• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.

We also love our community. That’s another reason the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law - so all residents may enjoy our community.

We trust we can count on you for voluntary compliance with the leash law. We don’t like to call animal control, but we won’t have any choice if your dog is running free.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.

Ingredients: 2 cup crushed graham crackers 1/4 cup powdered sugar 1/2 cup butter 1 can sweetened condensed milk 8 oz. pkg. coconut (2 1/2 cups) 1 12 oz. package real chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS: Mix graham crackers, powdered sugar and melted butter and pat into 9 x 13 pan. Bake 12 minutes at 350°F. Mix condensed milk and coconut together and spread over crust.

Bake 12 minutes at 350°F. Remove from oven. Sprinkle with real chocolate chips. Spread when melted. Cool and cut into squares.

Praline Cookies

Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter 1 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1 Egg 1 1/2 cup flour 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup chopped pecans

DIRECTIONS: Heat oven to 350°F. Cream butter, sugar and egg. Stir in flour, vanilla and pecans. Mix well by hand. Shape into balls about the size of walnuts, place on cookie sheets and flatten to about 1/8 inch. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely and harden.

Salt Dough Snowman Ornament

By: Amanda Formaro Difficulty: Very Easy Age: 5 and up

Creating salt dough is a fun activity for kids and it’s a great material to use to create homemade ornaments, so this is like two crafts in one!

For this ornament, kids can shape the dough into a simple snowman that would be a great gift to give a friend for the holidays.

What you’ll need: 1 tablespoon salt 2 tablespoons flour 1 tablespoon water Bowl Spoon Cookie sheet Toothpick Paint: white, orange and black Paintbrush Ribbon Acrylic sealer spray How to make it: Place flour, salt and water in a bowl and mix with the spoon. Once the dough is combined, pick it up in your hand and knead it with your fingers until smooth.

Remove a small piece of dough for making the nose and roll the larger piece of dough between your palms to form a ball.

Press the ball down onto the cookie sheet with the palm of your hand, flattening it out.

Roll the small piece of dough with your fingers into a carrot shape.

Press firmly but gently onto the round flattened dough.

Insert toothpick toward the top of the head, but not too close to the edge. Move the toothpick in a circular motion to enlarge the hole so that it is big enough to run a piece of ribbon through.

Bake ornament at 250 degrees for 2 hours. Remove from oven and let cool on a rack.

When completely cool, paint the round section white and the nose orange.

Use the handle end of a paintbrush dipped in black paint to dot on the snowman’s eyes and mouth. Let dry.

An adult should spray the ornament with a couple of coats of sealer.

When dry, tie a ribbon hanger through the hole in the top.

Tips: If you want to create a perfect circle, place dough inside a round biscuit or cookie cutter and spread with your fingers. Salt dough will break if dropped, so be sure to handle the ornament with care. The oven step can be skipped if you allow the ornament to dry overnight.

Drs. James Jacobs and Nicolas Manriquez, of Your Total Foot Care Specialist, are pleased to announce, two $1,500 “Stepping Into The Future” scholarships for 2012 KISD graduating seniors. Applications must be submitted to the offices of Your Total Foot Care Specialist

by March 29, 2012, 5:00 PM. A third party committee will select the two winning applicants. The “Stepping Into The Future” scholarship program is available to seniors graduating with GPA’s ranging from 2.5 to 3.7. The scholarships are geared towards those students showing academic promise through a combination of demonstrated academic achievement and leadership potential. The two “Stepping Into The Future” scholarship recipients will be announced at the Katy ISD Awards Ceremonies during May.

Keys news • KEYS Mentoring

One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child.

To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

KISD Receives Top Rating in Schools FIRST Financial Accountability Rating System

Katy ISD has earned a rating of Superior Achievement under the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) for the 20092010 fiscal year. Katy ISD has received this top rating for each of the nine years that Texas districts have been rated through Schools FIRST. Schools FIRST is a statewide rating system created to ensure that school districts are held accountable for the quality of their financial management practices, while achieving improved performance in the management of their financial resources. The Schools FIRST accountability rating system assigns one of four ratings, with the highest being Superior Achievement, followed by Above Standard Achievement, Standard Achievement and Substandard Achievement.

Approximately 784 out of the 1,029 school districts in Texas received the Superior Achievement rating this year.

Katy ISD also recently announced that it has been named a FiveStart District in the Texas Comptroller’s Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST) – one of only 23 districts in Texas to receive this rank for two consecutive years.

The Christmas Revels: Musical Theater in Celebration of the Winter Solstice

The darkest time of the year casts a powerful spell over nearly every culture in the northern hemisphere, and has given birth to countless ways of celebrating the winter solstice. Many of the present-day holiday rituals in our country originate in the Nordic/German traditions and come flavored with the spices of Europe. We invite you to take a little journey to early nineteenth-century Bavaria and the surrounding regions to explore the roots of modern Christmas. As always, this interactive family friendly show will include superb music, lovely costumes, and traditional dances. Our adult and children’s choruses will add to the warmth, as will performances by accomplished guest artists, including an Alphorn duet and yodlers, who are genuine interpreters of Bavarian culture. A keepsake booklet containing information about the Bavarian celebrations and songs featured in the show is included with the ticket. Don’t miss this heartwarming event and join in with our nationwide family of returning Revels fans.

Las Posadas is a Mexican tradition carried out by a group of people who get together to honor the birth of Jesus. Two Churches, One Message: LDS and Catholic Churches Present Annual Christmas Concert

The combined choirs of Epiphany Catholic Church and the Katy Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will present their annual Christmas concert on Sunday, December 11, 2011, 7:30 PM, at Epiphany Catholic Church - 1603 Norwalk Drive in Katy. The concert will feature traditional Christmas music, as well as holiday songs from other cultures. The event is open and free to the public.

For nineteen years, the two churches just across the street from each other have been combining their choirs for a Christmas Concert.
