VAL 2011 HALLOWEEN PARTY
The party on Saturday, October 29th, brought together a lot of little trick-or-treaters and their families to enjoy various activities near the pool house. Kids enjoyed table games, moonwalk, food and beverages. The weather was perfect for the occasion. Our sincere thanks to Ken and Jackie Kubiak for conducting sack races. These were enjoyed by kids and adults alike. Also, thanks to Emily Pruiett and Leisl Albers for arranging the event. It was a complete success.

DO NOT MISS THE HOLIDAY EVENT WITH SANTA

HOLIDAYS HOME DECORATING CONTEST
We encourage everyone to decorate their properties for the holidays with lights and outdoor ornaments. Don’t forget there is a special gift and recognition for the house judged to be the winner of the home decorating contest. The Social Committee of the Board will drive around to determine the winner between 6 PM and 9 PM on Thursday, December 22nd.
RECYCLE BINS
Houston has its fair share of windy days and we have found plastic bottles and other recyclable trash originating from recycle bins in front yards and on the streets. Please do not overfill the bins. Place lighter items like plastic bottles at the bottom and weighed down by heavier items on top. If you need another bin, please call Waste Management at 713-686-6666.
BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY
Always look repeatedly in your rear view mirrors and be vigilant when backing out of garage. Walkers and joggers can be out there when it is hard to see in the dark. Driver distractions from cell phones and texting can also put yourself and others in danger. So please be careful.
VAL BOARD OFFICERS SELECTED
Board members voted to make the following appointments for 2012: Kirk Blount, President Kerry Wright, Vice President Shailesh (Sam) Vyas, Treasurer Emily Pruiett, Secretary Leisl Albers, Director Feel free to contact any of the Board members if you have a question, complaint or a suggestion. 2012 HOMEOWNER ASSOCIATION DUES
The statements for the annual dues were sent out by AMI during October. Please pay these dues in full before the January 1, 2012 deadline. Payments received after the delinquency date will be charged interest at a rate of 18% per annum until they are paid in full. It costs your association unnecessary additional money to collect payments that are delinquent. Hence your timely payment is highly appreciated.

Good news. Deputy Glentzer, Harris County Sherriff Officer will continue to patrol our neighborhood in 2012. He has the following advice for everyone: • If you have an alarm system, please arm it during the day while you are away. Homes that are vulnerable to break-ins either have no alarms or have alarm systems that aren’t turned on. • Put yard signs provided by your alarm monitoring company in the front yard so that they are readily visible. • Use light timers that turn on lights automatically if you are going to be away. • Know your neighbors. Notice what vehicles belong to what house. Let your neighbors know if you plan to be away for an extended time. • Should you see anything suspicious, please call 911 right away. Our officers with Harris County Sheriff’s Department are there to assist and would be happy to catch bad people in action. • Should you have to leave your home for an extended period of time, please notify Deputy Glentzer at 713-221-6000 so that he can keep an eye on your property.
DEED RESTRICTIONS
The architectural committee enforces deed restrictions very seriously and any home addition or improvement, regardless of the size of the project, needs approval. Visit VAL website for more information. A reminder about keeping our neighborhood beautiful: • All street facing fences need to be stained with approved color. Call AMI for details. • Keep bushes trimmed and flower beds free of weeds. Be considerate about folks that use the sidewalks by trimming trees around sidewalks so they don’t hurt themselves with your overgrown tree branch. • Make sure your trees do not hide the street signs. This is a safety hazard. AMI may hire someone to remove/trim any branches that cause safety hazard and send you the invoice if you fail to maintain trees within your property.

OBSERVE ALL TRAFFIC RULES
When driving through neighborhood streets, pay attention and observe all rules. For the safety of children, walkers, joggers, etc., drive slow and come to a complete stop at the STOP signs. Do not text or talk on the cell phone while driving. Do so only if you have a hands-free device. Violating rules can prove to be very costly. So be careful.
KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR PET
Any time your dog is outside your home, make sure the pet is under leash. Why? Because it’s the law. We have found cases in our neighborhood where the owner lets the dog run free in the backyard, not realizing that the gate was open and the dog escaped into the street harming others. So keep your dog under close supervision.

Welcome to our neighborhood. Many refer to Villages at Lakepointe as the gated neighborhood without the gates. Here you will find residents that are proud of their properties and maintain them well, neighborhood pool with water that is always sparkling clear and professionally taken care of every week, beautifully manicured landscaping and members of the Board that are sincere and receptive to your feedback and who are genuinely concerned about safety of your family and friends.
GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.

CFISD VIPS FALL CONFERENCE
r y
It was barely 8:00 AM in the morning on Friday, Oct. 14 . They were beginning to arrive. Upon checking in; name badges were handed out along with a bright red folder full of the day’s agenda and the conference material. There was even an eco-friendly tote bag full of coupons and goodies generously donated by local area businesses. The room was huge and full of tables decorated with bright paper blocks spelling out the main part of this year’s theme, “Teamwork.” th
This was the annual VIPS Fall Conference held by the CFISD VIPS Executive Board at the Berry Center in Cypress. The schedule was full. It consisted of everything from learning how to turn a popsicle stick into a fun treat for a teacher or volunteer to tips on helping our students handle stress. The attendees could choose from a variety of 50 minute sessions that covered topics such as: Internet Safety; Reaching Out to Diverse Volunteers; Guidelines and Best Practices for Fundraising; and even Taking Care of Your Personal Health While Maintaining a Busy Lifestyle. Something was most impressive about this conference to one volunteer. This audience of 200 plus was comprised of men and women, volunteers and school staff - not limited to Cy-Fair ISD. There were 4 other area districts represented at this conference: Alief ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Houston ISD and Spring ISD. The current budget environment has left our school districts vying to be first in line for every resource of financial and physical support they can find. But for one day in October, the district boundary lines came down. There was no competition. There was no hidden agenda. Despite the traffic and everyday challenges, educators and volunteers from schools all over our county came together for a common purpose: improving their volunteer program thereby affecting the students in a positive way. This was simply an opportunity to attend an event that focused on several different areas of how to build on their volunteer resources in order to enhance the children’s education. While that volunteer sat looking out over the diverse crowd; she couldn’t help but see a universal theme, “Yes, in this room, it’s truly all about the students.”
largest Recognized school district in Texas. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) confirmed that an appeal was granted and CFISD’s accountability rating was changed to Recognized. The increase in rating came as a result of an appeal to recalculate the TAKS science passing percentage for Dean Middle School. The decision changed the campus’ accountability rating to Academically Acceptable.
STAAR TEST TO REPLACE TAKS TEST
STAAR, State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, has replaced TAKS. As the Texas Education Agency distributes information to the district about this new assessment program, we will post on the website at www.cfisd.net. TEA may not finalize all information until the beginning of the spring semester, so we encourage you to revisit the website throughout the school year. Be assured, we will post information as soon as it is available to the district. You can access information in several ways: 1. STAAR information will be posted on each campus’ web page. 2. STAAR is accessible from Quick Links on the homepage of the district website. 3. A STAAR resources link is posted on the homepage of the district website under District News. 4. Campuses will include information in parent newsletters. If you have any questions, please contact your school principal, CFISD curriculum and instruction team or TEA.

Christmas Events
Many of the present-day holiday rituals in our country originate in the Nordic/German traditions and come flavored with the spices of Europe. We invite you to take a little journey to early nineteenthcentury Bavaria and the surrounding regions to explore the roots of modern Christmas.
The Cornerstone United Methodist Church (CUMC) will be hosting a Live Nativity on Saturday, December 3rd from 6-8 PM, as we transform the front area of the church into scenes that will depict the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. There will be shepherds with their sheep, the Three Wise Men and a camel, Mary and Joseph with baby Jesus in a manger and an angel portraying this holy event. You will be able to visually embrace this event as you drive through, read scriptures and listen to music that tell of the wondrous night. In the past, we have had several hundred cars that drive through to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of Jesus Christ. We are located at 18081 West Road at Barker Cypress, behind the CVS. For directions or more information, please call the church at 281-859-4141 or go to our website at www.cornerstoneumc.org.
As always, this interactive family friendly show will include superb music, lovely costumes, and traditional dances. Our adult and children’s choruses will add to the warmth, as will performances by accomplished guest artists, including an Alphorn duet and yodlers, who are genuine interpreters of Bavarian culture.
Make Plans to Visit the Cornerstone UMC Live Nativity

FASHION WITH PASSION
Join us for Fashion with Passion a Dinner, Silent Auction and Fashion Show benefitting Jordan Merecka Thursday, January 26, 2012 6:30 to 10:00 PM Enchanted Cypress Ballroom 12603 Louetta Road, Cypress, Texas For sponsorship, volunteer, and ticket information contact: Teri Quance at teri@quancedesign.com Susie Pipkin at swpipkin@msn.com Terri Cesnik at terri.cesnik@sbcglobal.net Julie Saunders at jdsaunders@sbglobal.net Cynthis Gill at cynthis_gill@comcast.net Visit our Facebook page - “Fashion with Passion Fundraiser.” Tickets can be purchased at Quane Design Studio. Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood. As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordan’s focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.

Covenant Lutheran Church “Blue Christmas” Worship Service
Christmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved family member who has recently died; it may trigger some other sadness; it may be a time that has always been difficult. The constant refrain on the radio and television, in shopping malls and churches about the happiness of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation - all these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. We need the space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern; we need to know that we are not alone. Our spirits sink, as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us. For these reasons, Covenant Lutheran Church, 3785 Barker Cypress Rd, Houston offers a special “Blue Christmas” (also known as “Longest Night”) service on December 21st at 7:00 pm. Come out and join in sharing and hearing prayers, scripture and music that acknowledge that God’s presence is for

GIVE AN HOUR™ NETWORK Provides Free Counseling to Troops and Families
Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-855-1982 or log on to www.banyancounseling. com, (click Military Families link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area.

MOMS Club of Cypress North, Texas
Are you an at-home mom looking for some fun distractions during the day? Why not try out MOMS Club of Cypress-North! We are a chapter of the International MOMS Club, which is a national, nonprofit organization that gives at-home mothers the opportunity to share activities and discussions with other mothers and their children. Activities are held during the day, when at-home mothers need support and interaction the most. Children are always welcome. We also organize community service projects throughout the year. Our members are moms of various ages and backgrounds with kids of all ages (newborn to high school age). Our business meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of every month. If you are interested or would like more information, please visit our web site at www.momsclub.org or contact Stephanie Hvezdos, President, at whizwine@aol.com or 713-444-0697 for location, directions or any questions. We are happily welcoming new moms at each meeting. Hope to see you there!
But soon after the little miracle arrives so do all the questions and sometimes, without any clear answers. The Mothers of Young Children (MYC) group was organized by St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church to minister to families with young children throughout the Northwest Houston community. Both stay at home and working parents are invited to participate in the group. The group supports and prays for one another, shares information and ideas on child rearing and builds lasting friendships. Most importantly, MYC’s focus is on God and God’s presence in families. The MYC ministry includes: • Friday morning Bible study at 9:30 AM (childcare provided!) • Monthly Kids Night In • Mom’s Night Out • Playgroups throughout the year • Service ministries • Online discussion forum
MOMS Group Starts at Cornerstone UMC
The MYC group is an exciting ministry filled with open hearts and lots of energy (and that isn’t including the kids) with a desire to grow in Christ. St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church is located at 17020 West Road, at the corner of West and Queenston. For more information, check out our web site at www.stcuthbert.org or contact Tanya Avery at tanyatj@sbcglobal.net.
Please email Heather Finney at hfinney03@yahoo.com for meeting dates, to RSVP or with any questions. Cornerstone membership or preschool enrollment is not required, so bring all of your friends that would like fellowship time with other Christian moms.
Northwest Houston Mothers of Multiples (NWHMOM) meets at 7 PM, the third Thursday of every month, at the Coles Crossing subdivision clubhouse, 13050 Barker Cypress in Cypress. NWHMOM assists mothers of multiple birth children by lending them support; sharing information and relating experiences raising multiples. Welcoming all expectant, newly delivered and seasoned (veteran) multiple mothers. For more information, visit www.nwhmom.org.
The monthly Cornerstone United Methodist Church MOMS group meets from 9:15 AM to 10:45 AM in Room 220. We are located at 15919 Ridge Park Drive across from Lowery Elementary. The nursery will be open for all who need it.
MOTHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN (MYC)
The moment a newborn baby wraps their tiny hand around a parent’s finger is a pivotal moment in the life of any parent. The baby not only tugs on the finger, but on the parent’s heart as well. It is in that awesome moment that the parent begins to understand the unconditional and abounding love that God has for each of us.
