GETTING INVOLVED As a homeowner, your involvement is one of the cogs that keep this community going. Whether it’s running for the HOA Board, being a block captain or just voting, we need as many homeowners as possible engaged in some way. LRCA no longer has a “developer” in charge of maintaining common areas or enforcing deed restrictions; your HOA does that. Community events do not just “happen;” people volunteer and take time out of their schedule to help foster community spirit and growth.

Participating in an election is often overlooked by many Americans, for a myriad of reasons (“not enough time,” “too busy,” “don’t know/don’t care,” etc.). Ironically, being a voter on any level is a role that we will all fight to never give up, but that few are actually willing to practice. Homeowners’ associations everywhere almost always have problems meeting quorum every year when it comes to neighborhood elections and our community is no different. At the last election in March 2011, we came very close, but fell short of quorum. As a result, three people (out of 5 directors) were appointed to one-year terms, but these terms expire this year, as well as another existing position. This means there will be four positions up for election this December and my hope is that many of you take advantage of your privilege of being a voter.

Please contact PCMI (281-870-0585) to be placed on the ballot if you would like to run for a position.

Inform your neighbors that you are running and get the word out. Ballots and proxies will be mailed out by PCMI this fall and elections will take place at the Annual Homeowners Meeting in December. Additional details will be mailed and posted at the community website: www.villagesofcypresslakes.info.

If you cannot run for a position, please take the opportunity to vote or at least complete and return the proxy so we can meet quorum requirements (10% of the total number of homeowners = 81). Neighborly reminder

This is a beautiful community. In helping to keep it that way, it would be great to remind people that they should clean up after their pets.

It is great for people to have pets and love their pets, but being a good neighbor is also important. We can’t tell you how bad it feels to put work and money into your yard so that you and your family can enjoy it and play in it... but then you find that other people have left disgusting feces on your yard for you to find and clean up! It is simply not fair.

• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621.

• The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer.

• Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year.

• Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson.

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots.

• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away.

• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth.

• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply.

• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow.

• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter.

Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap.

• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens.

• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant.

• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

Helping Others During the Holidays

With the winter holiday season approaching, many people like to think of ways to give back to the community and those in need at this time of year.

But with gift giving, winter holiday parties and other commitments also commanding your attention, it’s hard to find time to help others. Here are some tips to make giving back easy.

In With The New, Out With The Old The winter holiday is a good time to go through the items you have in your home and decide if you no longer need them. With presents coming into your home, there’s a good possibility that you can get rid of some of your older things.

You have many options for donating these used items: • As you take your fall clothes out of the closet and replace them with winter ones, ask yourself if you’ll wear them again. That’s especially true of winter coats and jackets, which are always in high demand at aid agencies.

• For your old clothes, look for clothing drives. Many shelters and faith-based organizations accept donations year round and they make a strong push for more donations as the weather gets cooler. They appreciate it if you clean them before donating them.

• For furniture, look to thrift shops or other non-profit organizations. Many of them will pick up your furniture for you, so call ahead and see if you can save yourself the trouble of lugging your furniture around.

• As you’re shopping for your winter holiday dinners over the next couple of months, stop by the canned food aisle and pick up some extra food to give away. Donate them to organizations that support soup kitchens or run “meals on wheels” programs.

• If you have older children, they probably have many toys they don’t play with anymore. Encourage them to choose some to give to kids who won’t be getting any new toys this time of year. Many organizations are especially in need of donated toys this time of year.

• If you’ve been really good this year, perhaps someone will give you a new car, allowing you to donate your old one to a charity. In general, larger charitable organizations accept cars, and sometimes boats, as donations and some are even willing to pick it up for you.

• Check Out Charities. One of the easiest ways to help others is to donate to charitable organizations. If you aren’t personally familiar with the organization you plan on giving to, check them out with your local Better Business Bureau to make sure your donation does as much good as you hope it will.

Hassle-Free Donations As you go around gift shopping over the next two months, keep an eye out for opportunities to make donations. Many stores allow charitable organizations to set up outside their doors or even place donation bins by the cash register. Dropping some money in is so simple and doesn’t take any time out of your busy day.

And here’s an easy way to get your friends involved: If you’re throwing a party in the next couple months, ask your guests to bring one canned good or toy along with them. With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on in-demand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier:

Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping.

This will make your day more organized, and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make.

• Sign up for store e-mail updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale.

• Print out any online coupons you may have.

• Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Borders and Barnes & Noble offer such programs.

• Consider outlet shopping.

The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. This will not help your shopping, per se, but will make you feel happy and satisfied.

• Get a good’s night sleep the night before. Thanks to all that food in your belly it shouldn’t be too hard to fall asleep.

The Day Of Thanksgiving Day Sales: • Know exactly the time that the stores you want to hit are open, and go to the store that has the best deals, and/or the gift you want to get the most first. Be there at least a half-hour before it opens if the gift is popular.

• Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior.

• Be caffeinated and full – don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach.

• Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathon-shopping day to grab some grub from the food court.

• Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds.

• Don’t worry about purchasing little gifts today, such as stocking stuffers, but rather focus on gifts that are bigger, harder to find, and more expensive.

• Consider this a good day to look for that new winter coat or little black dress you need. Clothing sales are usually very good on Black Friday, because so many people are already in the stores looking for toys and gifts.

The Cy-Fair ISD volunteer theme for this year is “Teamwork is Key” in recognition of the combined effort that it takes to ensure student success.

Our school district fully understands and appreciates that it takes district administration, teachers, school staff, parents, community partners and volunteers each doing their part to give our children every possible opportunity to reach their full potential.

We are looking for community members who want to become Global Volunteers in order to be a part of our “team” and make a difference in the lives of children. If you are not the parent, grandparent or legal guardian of a student enrolled in the school at which you volunteer, you would be considered a Global Volunteer.

CFISD Receives State Comptroller 2011 Texas Honors Circle Award

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is one of only 46 recipients, among 1,237 public school districts and charter schools statewide, to receive a five-star rating for academic and financial performance from Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller.

The Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST) assigned every school district in the state a rating from one to five stars, indicating success in combining costeffective spending with achievement of measurable student academic progress.

A five-star rating reflects the strongest relative academic progress combined with the lowest relative spending. CFISD was one of 23 five-star districts to retain its designation for the second consecutive year. The Comptroller’s office ranked CFISD in the 91st percentile of composite progress, which, combined with a spending index of “Very Low,” amounted to the five-star rating.

Recently, the Texas Education Agency released data that ranked CFISD’s administrative cost ratio as the lowest among Houston-area school districts.

Administrative costs in the area range from the highest cost ratio (9.12 percent) in North Forest ISD to the lowest (3.67 percent) in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. Ratios are calculated comparing administrative to instructional-related costs. More comparative information is located on the district website.

In addition to the district’s recognition for operational efficiency and effectiveness, 33 CFISD schools also received the Texas Comptroller’s 2011 Texas Honors Circle Award for strong academic performance while spending relatively little compared to their peers statewide. Only 313 school campuses statewide received this distinction for high rankings received in the 2011 Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST), meaning CFISD accounted for 10.5 percent of all Honors Circle campuses in the state.

Elementary campuses receiving the award achieved a five-star FAST rating, while middle and high school campuses tapped for the honor achieved at least a 4.5-star FAST rating. The following CFISD schools were recognized in the Texas Honors Circle:

Rachel Kitchens and Nicki Ahearn Release Video “Tolerance: It Starts With Us”

Rachel Kitchens and Nicki Ahearn, seniors at Cypress Woods High, have released their new video, “Tolerance: It Starts With Us.” The video is a personal response to the recent spate of teen suicides and is a plea for tolerance in an intolerant world.

To further promote what they hope to accomplish through their video, Kitchens and Ahearn established October 7th as the second annual Tolerance Day at

Cypress Woods High School. They asked everyone at the school to wear purple to promote tolerance as well as to honor the lives of those who have committed suicide due to bullying. They noted that this campaign has been very well accepted at the school and that over 200 people ordered purple shirts in honor of the campaign. The girls said that people have approached them to tell them how impressed and grateful they are for the change in message on the issue of bullying.

Ahearn said: “In this year’s video, we really take a step forward and confront our own insecurities, things that we’ve been bullied for throughout our lives.

By doing this, we aim to establish a sense of unity among all people; though we all have separate and individual differences, we should still tolerate each other’s individuality and treat each other with respect.”

Kitchens explained: “It’s a human issue. We all deserve the respect of our fellow human beings, no matter what our differences. In this video and through this day of support and tolerance, we hope to show that while we all have our own issues that we are bullied for, the problems are universal, as is the solution to bullying. We should all be able to tolerate and accept each other, because we’re all truly in the same boat.”

Ahearn also added that, “Our world today is proof that some people simply cannot accept people’s differences. This is a fact that we must deal with and confront. However, even if a person cannot accept the religious, racial or sexual differences of another, every person has the right to expect and receive respect. Maybe you can’t accept it, but you should be able to tolerate it and let people live in peace.”

The girls’ mission statement is simple: it’s time to end bullying, and it starts with us.

Bear Creek Baptist Church Upward Basketball and Cheerleading

Bear Creek Baptist Church is offering Upward Basketball and Cheerleading for K-8th Grade. Cost is $75. They will have one hour of practices a week and on Saturdays they will have a game for an hour. Every practice and game takes place on our Campus. It is a great place where they will learn new skills for the game and cheer. Our first evaluation will be Saturday, November 5th, from 10:30 AM -1:30 PM in our gym on the Sonic side of our Church.

Exciting Changes Ahead for CFSA Basketball Winter 2011 Season

Cy-Fair Sports Association will unveil new enhancements to the Basketball Program for the Winter 2011 season. Similar to the CFSA Baseball program, coaches will now be allowed to form “friendship” teams and play against other friendship teams. The “select” level of play will be expanded to achieve more competitive balance and will include a mid-season tournament with players outside the CFSA program. The traditional “classic” division will remain in place with teams selected based upon where players live and go to school.

These changes will create a basketball experience that meets the diverse needs of the Cy-Fair community while continuing to attract new participants into the program. Epiphany of the Lord Frostyfest Craft Show

First Christian Church of Katy 5th Annual “Living Nativity”

Operation Christmas Child Operation Christmas Child is a ministry project devoted to reaching underprivileged children all over the world with the true meaning of Christmas. The project accomplishes this goal by collecting simple gifts complied into shoeboxes from people all over the U.S.A. These gifts consist of hygiene items, small toys, candy, school supplies, etc. The items are packed into shoeboxes along with the story of the Nativity, printed in their native language. The gift is so simple but the impact is huge.

Last year, Epiphany Lutheran Church participated in the project and the response was amazing. The church collected over 80 full boxes to ship overseas from the congregation alone. “We felt such a strong connection to this cause. It was truly moving,” remarks one Epiphany member.

This year, Epiphany has decided to take advantage of its new, more visible location on West Rd. and Jackrabbit, to become a collection center for OCC. Golf Tournaments

Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood. As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordan’s focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston.
