UNEVEN, BUCKLED or CRACKED CONCRETE WALKWAYS
It is the Homeowners’ responsibility to maintain and fix, if necessary, all concrete walkways on their property.
In Houston, the extreme draught conditions with intermittent soaking rains may cause walkways overtime to move, buckle or crack. Also chances are that the trees and bushes around your yards, if not thoroughly irrigated, could make the root system expand under the concrete slab. This can result into buckling and cracking. Apart from the aesthetics, buckled or cracked walkways allow water to pool causing long-term damage to the slab. Standing water also invites mosquitoes and insects. And let’s not forget the legal issues: uneven slabs should be fixed because it’s a tripping hazard. In early 2012, the architectural committee through AMI will issue notices of deed violation to homeowners where buckled or cracked walkways are deemed to pose a safety hazard. Please be proactive and do not wait for the notice to arrive. Fix the problem as soon as possible if you notice your property has this issue.

COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE
Starting 2012, we will hold this event twice each year. So mark your calendar. Saturday, April 21, 2012 and Saturday, October 6, 2012. Watch April 2012 VAL Newsletter for more details. And do not forget to check VAL website for community news and events.
PROVIDE AMI YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS
If you want to stay informed about our neighborhood events, please provide your email address to Heidi Flores at: Hflores@amitx.com.
DID YOU PAY YOUR 2012 HOMEOWNER DUES?
The statements for the annual dues were sent out by AMI during October. If you are one of those that have already paid, thank you very much. If you paid before January 31, 2012, you will not be charged penalties. Payments received after that date will be charged interest at a rate of 18% per annum until they are paid in full. Delinquent homeowners who consistently remain in arrears could suffer serious consequences, including a home foreclosure. It costs your association unnecessary additional money to collect payments that are delinquent. Hence your timely payment is highly appreciated. Also please complete and send the Owner/Resident Information form provided with your dues statement. It is very important that we have your email address so that AMI and the Board are able to communicate important announcements that relate to our neighborhood in a timely manner.

HOME SECURITY
Deputy Glentzer, Harris County Sherriff Officer will continue to patrol our neighborhood in 2012. He has the following advice for everyone: • If you have an alarm system, please arm it during the day while you are away. Homes that are vulnerable to break-ins either have no alarms or have alarm systems that aren’t turned on. • Put yard signs provided by your alarm monitoring company in the front yard so that they are readily visible. • Use light timers that turn on lights automatically if you are going to be away. • Know your neighbors. Notice what vehicles belong to what house. Let your neighbors know if you plan to be away for an extended time. • Should you see anything suspicious, please call 911 right away. Our officers with Harris County Sheriff’s Department are there to assist and would be happy to catch bad people in action. • Should you have to leave your home for an extended period of time, please notify Deputy Glentzer at 713-221-6000 so that he can keep an eye on your property.

DEED RESTRICTIONS
The architectural committee enforces deed restrictions very seriously and any home addition or improvement, regardless of the size of the project, needs approval. Visit VAL website for more information. A reminder about keeping our neighborhood beautiful: • All street facing fences need to be stained with approved color. Call AMI for details. • Keep bushes trimmed and flower beds free of weeds. Be considerate about folks that use the sidewalks by trimming trees around sidewalks so they don’t hurt themselves with your overgrown tree branch. • Make sure your trees do not hide the street signs. This is a safety hazard. AMI may hire someone to remove/trim any branches that cause safety hazard and send you the invoice if you fail to maintain trees within your property. Remember: External buildings or sheds visible from the street are strictly prohibited and must be submitted for approval. Iron fences/gates not originally provided by the builder undergo special review for their appearance and height. These also must be submitted for review prior to installation. In general any changes or improvements to the outside of the home require approval from the Architectural Committee. Examples: • Landscaping • Siding • Mailbox (brick addition) • Driveway extension • Window (solar) panels or Window air-conditioners • Fence (height, color, movement) • Shed • Gates • Exterior Paint

Grooming/Boarding Available! OBSERVE ALL TRAFFIC RULES
When driving through neighborhood streets, pay attention and observe all rules. For the safety of children, walkers, joggers, etc., drive slow and come to a complete stop at the STOP signs. Do not text or talk on the cell phone while driving. Do so only if you have a hands-free device. Violating rules can prove to be very costly. So be careful.
KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR PET
Any time your dog is outside your home, make sure the pet is under leash. Why? Because it’s the law. We have found cases in our neighborhood where the owner lets the dog run free in the backyard, not realizing that the gate was open and the dog escaped into the street harming others. So keep your dog under close supervision.

Fundraisers BERYL RAMSEY AND WAYNE VOSS TO CHAIR GO RED FOR WOMEN LUNCHEON
CEO of Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, Beryl Ramsey, returns to Chair the Go Red For Women Luncheon in partnership with CEO of Methodist West Houston Hospital, Wayne Voss. Together, Ramsey and Voss will serve as Co-Chairs and lead efforts to raise awareness that heart disease remains the number one killer of women, but is often preventable with healthy lifestyle choices. This year’s luncheon will be held on Monday, Feb. 13th at the Berry Center in Cy-Fair and is expected to draw more than 400 business and community leaders. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn tips on heart disease and stroke prevention from local experts, listen to a heart-warming story of survival from an area resident, participate in interactive breakout displays and shop the “purse-onalities” silent auction. The silent auction is a unique piece of the luncheon that features items representative of the diverse personalities of the community. Purses can be anything from actual handbags to golf bags to briefcases. This year’s auction will include something for everyone! Melissa Wilson of Fox 26 Morning News will emcee the event and Dr. Valentina Ugolini of Willowbrook Cardiovascular Associates will be the featured medical speaker. Ramsey and Voss and their team of volunteers have a goal of raising a record-breaking $200,000 to support educational programs that the American Heart Association provides and the life-saving research it funds to reduce the effects of heart disease in women.

CWC - Women Serving the Community
The Cy-Fair Women’s Club held its first business meeting for the year on January 5th. On February 2nd, we plan to continue our business meeting and hope to play Bunco if time permits. During the beginning portion of our February meeting we will have Nancie Craft visit with our group to offer us great deals for Rodeo Carnival Tickets. We are looking forward to visiting with her. CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community, so all funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community, as well. Membership for the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ. Our meetings begin with social time and refreshments at 7:00 PM immediately followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at the corner of Queenston and West Road. Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships. We look forward to meeting you! If you have any questions about our club or need directions to the church, please contact Susan McLeroy, Membership Chair at sudomac@comcast.net.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-theBoot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. The West Road Campus of Cornerstone United Methodist Church located at 18081 West Road (across from the CFISD Berry Center) currently consists of a worship center and education wing. The 12.84 acre plot of land was purchased by Cornerstone in 2004. The new worship center was opened in October, 2010 and the education wing was opened in August, 2011. Cornerstone’s main campus is located at 15919 Ridge Park Dr. (across from Lowery Elementary School). “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through FEBRUARY. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

GIVE AN HOUR™ NETWORK
Provides Free Counseling to Troops and Families Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family

LA LECHE LEAGUE BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP
La Leche League is an international nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is a simple and natural process, but you may need support and information on the correct positioning of the baby at the breast, working and breastfeeding, avoiding problems and overcoming any difficulties that may occur. Knowing other women who have breastfed their babies can be helpful and reassuring. Having accurate, up-to-date information is also important. Attending La Leche League meetings can help you learn about breastfeeding from other nursing mothers. At these monthly meetings, mothers share not only their questions and concerns but also the benefits and joys of breastfeeding. Being in touch with La Leche League can give you the network of support you need. There are numerous meeting locations all over the Houston area. The Cy-Fair group meets on the second Tuesday of the month, at 10:00 AM, in the Berkshire Community Meeting Room, 15607 Berkshire Manor Ln. Babies are welcome! The Group offers an extensive lending library of books, free information and materials for sale. MOTHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN (MYC)
The moment a newborn baby wraps their tiny hand around a parent’s finger is a pivotal moment in the life of any parent. The baby not only tugs on the finger, but on the parent’s heart as well. It is in that awesome moment that the parent begins to understand the unconditional and abounding love that God has for each of us. But soon after the little miracle arrives so do all the questions and sometimes, without any clear answers.
