“DRESS FOR SUCCESS” CHARITY DRIVE – January 15th
Dress for Success is a non-profit charitable organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. On Sunday, January 15, 2012 we will be hosting a drive to collect donations in the form of interview-appropriate clothing, handbags, shoes, scarves etc. that can be utilized by women preparing for an interview to find a job and improve their quality of life. All donations are tax-deductible. Dress for Success understands that if a woman does not have a job, she cannot afford to buy the appropriate attire. But, without appropriate attire, she can’t find a job! By donating you will be helping someone less fortunate get on the road to success.

All electrical work to replace lights and fixtures at the pool house and the adjoining parking lot is now complete. You will also notice new LED lights that are now in place at both entrances, a replacement for the old mercury vapor lights that light up landscape around the entrances. The new lights are more energy efficient and longer lasting, hopefully saving us money over the long-term. We also installed an additional circuit at the Evergreen entrance to accommodate the additional power load of holiday lighting. The pool house kiddie play area under the canopy also received fresh mulch bedding. The Board decided this was an expense well worth it for children’s safety when they utilize the facility.

HOME SECURITY ISSUES
Deputy Glentzer, Harris County Sherriff Officer will continue to patrol our neighborhood in 2012. He has the following advice for everyone: • If you have an alarm system, please arm it during the day while you are away. Homes that are vulnerable to break-ins either have no alarms or have alarm systems that aren’t turned on. • Put yard signs provided by your alarm monitoring company in the front yard so that they are readily visible.

• Use light timers that turn on lights automatically if you are going to be away. • Know your neighbors. Notice what vehicles belong to what house. Let your neighbors know if you plan to be away for an extended time. • Should you see anything suspicious, please call 911 right away. Our officers with Harris County Sheriff’s Department are there to assist and would be happy to catch bad people in action. • Should you have to leave your home for an extended period of time, please notify Deputy Glentzer at 713-221-6000 so that he can keep an eye on your property.
DEED RESTRICTIONS
The architectural committee enforces deed restrictions very seriously and any home addition or improvement, regardless of the size of the project, needs approval. Visit VAL website for more information. A reminder about keeping our neighborhood beautiful: • All street facing fences need to be stained with approved color. Call AMI for details. • Keep bushes trimmed and flower beds free of weeds. Be considerate about folks that use the sidewalks by trimming trees around sidewalks so they don’t hurt themselves with your overgrown tree branch. • Make sure your trees do not hide the street signs. This is a safety hazard. AMI may hire someone to remove/trim any branches that cause safety hazard and send you the invoice if you fail to maintain trees within your property. The architectural committee enforces deed restrictions very seriously and any home addition or improvement, regardless of the size of the project, needs approval. Visit VAL website for more information. Remember: External buildings or sheds visible from the street are strictly prohibited and must be submitted for approval. Iron fences/gates not originally provided by the builder undergo special review for their appearance and height. These also must be submitted for review
Villages at Lakepointe
prior to installation. In general any changes or improvements to the outside of the home require approval from the Architectural Committee. Examples: • Landscaping • Siding • Mailbox (brick addition) • Driveway extension • Window (solar) panels or Window air-conditioners • Fence (height, color, movement) • Shed • Gates • Exterior Paint
OBSERVE ALL TRAFFIC RULES
When driving through neighborhood streets, pay attention and observe all rules. For the safety of children, walkers, joggers, etc., drive slow and come to a complete stop at the STOP signs. Do not text or talk on the cell phone while driving. Do so only if you have a hands-free device. Violating rules can prove to be very costly. So be careful.
KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR PET
Any time your dog is outside your home, make sure the pet is under leash. Why? Because it’s the law. We have found cases in our neighborhood where the owner lets the dog run free in the backyard, not realizing that the gate was open and the dog escaped into the street harming others. So keep your dog under close supervision. ••••••••••••••••••

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted.
January 2012
Villages at Lakepointe
• Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

Using Service Learning to Practice Math Skills Preschoolers Collect 366 Food Items for Needy Cypress Families for Thanksgiving
For the month of November, teachers at Montessori Preschool at Copperfield introduced service as a way to inspire math-readiness in preschool children. By collecting cans and non-perishable food items for needy Cypress families, children (ages 18 months to 6 years) practiced counting skills, place value, addition and subtraction at an advanced level at an early age in the name of service.
• Fully Accredited K-12 / College Preparatory • High School Dual Credit and AP Courses • Comprehensive Technology Program • Award-Winning Sports and Fine Arts
Children established a goal of collecting 65 food items in a month and surpassed their goal by 301 in two weeks. Teachers aided the counting process, introducing place value to understand the value of three-digit numbers and tracking total donations on a large chart. Kindergartners practiced three-digit addition and subtraction problems to account for the total number of food items. All food items will be donated to Cypress Assistance Ministries for Thanksgiving. In addition, students were taught the value of service and sharing, especially in tough economic times when it is difficult to give freely.

Rosehill Christian School Trike-a-Thon
Rosehill Christian School Boys Basketball Team Wins Conroe Covenant Tournament
With the sting of losing in the finals of the Irving Cistercian Tournament still fresh on their minds, the RCS Boys came out strong and defeated #3 ranked Austin Waldorf 47-37 in the title game of the Conroe Covenant tournament. Keith Self tied for a team high 13 points with John Ogle, going a perfect 5 for 5 from the field including 3 for 3 from three point range. To get to the finals, Ogle led the team in scoring with 25 points in the semi-final match against host Conroe Covenant. It was RCS’s first win against the school in three years.
Rosehill Christian School pre-schoolers participated in a Trike-aThon October 28th. The children gathered pledges from family and friends to raise money for new playground equipment. Fun was had by all as they rode around the brightly decorated gymnasium on their tricycles. The students enjoyed a teddy bear picnic, moonwalks, face painting, crafts and more. The highlight of the day was “racing” in the electric cars. Rosehill Christian School is located at 19830 FM 2920 in Tomball, Texas. www.rcseagles.org
With a record of 10 wins, 2 losses, #2 ranked RCS is off to their best start in four years after being just one basket away from a TAPPS 3A final four appearance last season. In a smothering display of defense, the RCS Eagles held Waldorf to just l0 points in the first half, leading 24-10 at the break. Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood. As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordan’s focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.

Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-855-1982 or log on to www.banyancounseling. com, (click Military Families link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area.

LA LECHE LEAGUE BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP
La Leche League is an international nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is a simple and natural process, but you may need support and information on the correct positioning of the baby at the breast, working and breastfeeding, avoiding problems and overcoming any difficulties that may occur. Knowing other women who have breastfed their babies can be helpful and reassuring. Having accurate, up-to-date information is also important. Attending La Leche League meetings can help you learn about breastfeeding from other nursing mothers. At these monthly meetings, mothers share not only their questions and concerns but also the benefits and joys of breastfeeding. Being in touch with La Leche League can give you the network of support you need. There are numerous meeting locations all over the Houston area. The Cy-Fair group meets on the second Tuesday of the month, at 10:00 AM, in the Berkshire Community Meeting Room, 15607 Berkshire Manor Ln. Babies are welcome! The Group offers an extensive lending library of books, free information and materials for sale. For more info about this meeting or any of the meetings in the Houston area, call the Helpline at 713-383-2819. See also www.LLLHouston.org.

MOTHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN (MYC)
The moment a newborn baby wraps their tiny hand around a parent’s finger is a pivotal moment in the life of any parent. The baby not only tugs on the finger, but on the parent’s heart as well. It is in that awesome moment that the parent begins to understand the unconditional and abounding love that God has for each of us. But soon after the little miracle arrives so do all the questions and sometimes, without any clear answers. The Mothers of Young Children (MYC) group was organized by St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church to minister to families with young children throughout the Northwest Houston community. Both stay at home and working parents are invited to participate in the group. The group supports and prays for one another, shares information and ideas on child rearing and builds lasting friendships. Most importantly, MYC’s focus is on God and God’s presence in families. The MYC ministry includes: • Friday morning Bible study at 9:30 AM (childcare provided!) • Monthly Kids Night In • Mom’s Night Out • Playgroups throughout the year • Service ministries • Online discussion forum The MYC group is an exciting ministry filled with open hearts and lots of energy (and that isn’t including the kids) with a desire to grow in Christ. St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church is located at 17020 West

When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
REMINDER OF HARRIS COUNTY BANNING OF SALE OF ANIMALS ALONG PUBLIC ROADS

Our primary mission is to rescue (from pounds and shelters) purebred (and a few mixed) dachshunds that end up alone, abandoned and/or abused and for many of them, it can be an 11th hour rescue. All of our rescued dachsies receive a complete health evaluation by our accredited veterinary clinics and are either spayed or neutered (if not already), given immunizations, dental care and are started on any necessary medical treatment(s). Our focus following rescue, is rehabilitation and relocation into a safe and loving foster home. These dachshunds are all in need of a second chance at life and simple basics like human affection, which they may have been without their entire little lives. And for that reason… We’re in desperate need of Foster Parents! As a foster parent, you’ll have the opportunity to help so many dogs. You’ll provide them a place to stay and be loved until they are healthy and strong enough to be adopted. Fostering is very rewarding, and the puppy kisses you’ll receive are priceless! If you think you might be interested in fostering or maybe even adopting, please join us at Dachshund Rescue of Houston on Facebook or visit us and our “dachsies in waiting” on our website at www.dachshundrescueofhouston.org. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through JANUARY. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
