There are no dues and new members are welcome!

• Volunteer at the Library - Volunteer opportunities abound at the library. Volunteers are needed to help shelve, count patrons and more. We will be holding our next volunteer orientation on Tuesday, February 15th at 7 PM. Students should be in high school and must be able to commit to two hours a week. If you would like to help in anyway, please contact Sarah Nelson at 281-492-8592.

• Family MOVIE - School out for a long weekend in February. In honor of the upcoming Oscars we will be showing a special movie on February 17th at 3 PM. Unfortunately, we can’t print the name of the movie here but you can call the library or stop by for the mystery title.

• Free Internet Classes - The library provides free classes in Internet Basics each month. You can learn how to navigate your way around the World Wide Web and use successful search techniques.

You must know how to use a mouse and a keyboard. The next month’s classes will be on Tuesday, February 14th from 1:00 to 2:00 PM and on Saturday, February 11th at 10 AM. Pre-registration is required for the Saturday class ONLY. • Word Processing Class - Are you interested in getting more out of your Microsoft Word program? On Tuesday, February 14th

at 7-8:30 PM, the library will be teaching the basics of how to use Microsoft word. Can’t come then? Don’t worry, the class will repeat on Tuesday, February 21st at 7-8:30. Registration begins February 1st at 10 AM. Basic keyboard and mouse skills are required.

• Jazz and Poetry - Come celebrate Black History Month in style!

On Thursday, February 16th at 1 PM, Jazz Education Inc. will be at the library to celebrate the contributions of African Americans to our nation’s culture. Through music and poetry this 45 minute program is an inspirational lesson that celebrates the historic contribution and achievements of great Americans including Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. While you are here, check out our wall of who’s who in African American history. How many can you name? Join us for an afternoon of poetry and music as we celebrate Black History Month.

• Family Art - School is out for President’s Day. Why not spend it having fun at the library? On Monday, February 20th at 3 PM the Maud Marks Library will be hosting our next family art program. Join us as we create a special art project. There is no registration required and all are welcome.

• CALLING ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS!!! On Saturday, February 4th at 10:15 AM, the Kaplan will be at the library to give students a practice SAT. Then on the following Saturday, February 11th at 2 PM, they will return with graded tests and tips and strategies for scoring high on the SAT. Learn what you need to do to improve your score on one of the most important tests you’ll ever take. Seating for this and all programs is limited. Please call for more information and reservations.

• Free Tax Assistance - Beginning February 3rd, every Monday and Friday through April 16th, AARP will be offering free tax assistance to elderly and low-income individuals. AARP assistance from 10 AM to 2 PM. • Basic Emailing - Ready for your own email account? The library will be hosting a one time class about basic emailing skills on February 28th at 7 PM. Learn about sending emails, attaching documents and more. Basic mouse and keyboarding skills are required. Seating for this and all computer classes is extremely limited.

• Senior Moments - If something happens to you, how would your loved one handle it? Seniors and mature adults are invited to join us for a funeral planning seminar on Tuesday, February 21st at 1 PM. Learn what you can do now to relieve the burden on your family when the time comes.

Beets. Choose beets that are firm with a deep red color, smooth surface and slender tap root. You can also judge freshness from the condition of the beet tops. Wilted or decayed greens may indicate a lack of freshness. However, beets that remain firm to the touch, rather than wilted or soft, may still be good. Beets can be stored refrigerated in a plastic bag or vegetable crisper for about 1-2 weeks.

The greens should be removed prior to storage. If eating the greens, be sure to thoroughly wash them in cold water. Beet greens will keep refrigerated for about 3-5 days.

Broccoli. Fresh broccoli should have fresh-looking light green stalks of consistent thickness. Bud clusters should be tight and dark green, sometimes with a purple hue. Avoid broccoli with tough stems or open, flowering bud clusters. Fresh broccoli will keep refrigerated in the crisper for up to 3 to 5 days.

Cabbage. Cabbage heads should be firm and heavy for their size.

Look for crisp blemish-free leaves with an even color that clings tightly to the head. Cabbage will absorb odors of other foods. Refrigerate uncut and unwashed in a plastic bag or container for up to seven days.

Carrots. Look for carrots that are well-shaped with firm, smooth exteriors. Colors should be vibrant orange to red orange although there are white and even maroon varieties of carrots available in specialty markets. Tops are typically trimmed closely since the leafy greens decay rapidly and contribute to the decline of the carrot itself.

Flabby, soft or wilted carrots, or those that show any mildew, decay, growth cracks or splits, should be avoided. When purchasing fresh carrots with tops, remove the tops and store unwashed in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Celery. Choose stalks with rigid ribs that snap crisply when bent. The inside surface of the ribs should be clean and smooth. Leaves should be fresh with no signs of wilting. Refrigerate covered, unwashed celery for up to 2 weeks. Leave the ribs attached to the stalk until ready for use.

Grapefruit. Choose grapefruit that are heavy for their size and well shaped. The skin should be smooth with a blemish-free outer peel.

Don’t worry about any slight greening of the skin after harvesting; it does not affect the quality of the fruit. Surface marks that result from the fruit being wind-brushed against the tree do not affect the quality of the fruit either. Keep refrigerated. The fruit will keep for 7-10 days.

Grapefruit does not ripen further after harvest.

Greens. Cracked ice around and in packages may help extend shelf life. Keep at proper humidity levels to prevent wilting. Collard greens should be handled like spinach. Kale will freeze at 31° F, -.6° C. Do not store or transport ethylene-sensitive items with commodities that produce ethylene. Two can be lightly frozen several times without sustaining serious damage.

Turnips. Look for smooth-skinned, firm turnips that are heavy for their size. The color will be light-purple on the top fading to bright-white at the bottom. Avoid turnips that are soft, spongy or blemished. Cut off turnip greens and bag them separately for storage (greens keep for just a few days). Oranges. Reach for firm fruit that is heavy for its size. Take a sniff too. There should be a distinct citrus aroma. Avoid shriveled or soft fruit. Keep your oranges at room temperature. They should last for about two weeks. Make sure to turn them often and check for signs of mold, especially in a high humidity environment.

Spinach. Choose leaves that are crisp and dark green in color with a nice earthy fragrance. Avoid limp, damaged leaves with yellow spots.

Refrigerate unwashed spinach in a plastic bag for up to three days.

Squash. For summer squash like zucchini and yellow squash, look for blemish-free skins and average size selections. Overly large choices may be stringy with tough exteriors. For winter squash such as pumpkins, look for shells without crack, bruises or decay.

Pumpkins should be fully ripe with firm rinds, bright orange color and heavy weight. Summer squash can be stored refrigerated for 3 to 5 days. Winter squash can be stored whole in a cool (50 to 60 degrees F) dry area for several months.

Sweet Potatoes. All varieties of potatoes should be uniform in size, clean, firm and smooth. Avoid potatoes with wrinkled skins, soft dark spots and cut surfaces. A green tinge - indicative of prolonged light exposure - is caused by the alkaloid solanine, which can be toxic

FLOWERS • Plants to set: Alyssum, Calendula, Canterbury Bells, Carnations, Columbine, Cornflower. Daisies, Delphinium, Hollyhock, Larkspur, Lobelia, Nicotiana, Pansy, Petunia, Phlox (Louisiana), Shrimp Plant, Snapdragon, Stock and Verbena.

VEGETABLES • Plant beets, broccoli (plants), brussel sprouts (plants), cabbage (plants), carrots, cauliflower (plants), celery, chinese cabbage (plants), chives collards (plants), endive, kale, lettuce (leaf and head), mustard, onions (plants), parsley, garden peas, radishes, rutabagas, spinach, tomato (seeds) and turnips.

TREES AND SHRUBS • Finish all transplanting, get everything in the ground for a good spring spurt of growth. Transplant balled and burlap, containergrown, bare-root deciduous evergreen trees, shrubs, roses and vines while still dormant.

• Finish pruning roses. Weed and cultivate lightly all beds. Replenish mulch as needed.

• Control early spring insects like thrips on glads and aphids on young tender growth. Spray with Malathion, Diazinon or Orthene.

• At the end of February: peach, apple and pear fruit must be thinned to insure quality production at harvest.

• Give groundcovers a haircut. They will spread faster.

• Divide daylilies, daisies and other perennials now.

Katy Tween/Teen Talent Showcase Competition

Global Arm, Inc. and Teens Exercising Extraordinary Success (T.E.E.S.) hosted the inaugural Katy Tween Teen Talent Showcase Competition on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at Zo-ca-lo Lounge (510 Mason Road). Contestants from Katy ISD and Ft. Bend County ISD entered the competition. Along with their parents, they networked with many recording industry professionals and received valuable advice on career paths, personality, stage presence and business matters. Vocal ability wasn’t the only surprise of the day - two of the contestants performed their numbers by playing the guitar. The 1st place winner of the showcase was Ms. Reagan Douglas, of Katy, TX. Ms. Douglas performed a song she wrote entitled, Till The End (dedicated to Cancer victims), with her guitar; 2nd place winner was Ms. Skyler Sadler (Katy, TX) who performed At Last by Etta James; and the 3rd place winner was Ms. Kaitlyn Wright (Katy, TX) who performed Change by Carrie Underwood. Each winner received a trophy, courtesy of Katy Trophies. 2nd and 3rd place winners received a Chili’s Gift Card, courtesy of Don McGill Toyota. The 1st place winner won a package valued at over $16,000 which consisted of a complimentary studio session at Music World Studios (courtesy of Matthew Knowles), a complimentary photo shoot (courtesy of Jamie LeBlanc Photography), a featured song on Coast 2 Coast Mix tape hosted by Wildman Teddy T (courtesy of Star Quality Entourage) and a featured song on the upcoming film soundtrack starring Snoop Dog (courtesy of Vision World Entertainment).

Community Events Keep Kids Connected

Valentine Card Making event on February 4th in the afternoon at Bonnie Holland Elementary. Last year the event was put together by a few moms in a playgroup and over 50 people showed up and they raised almost $2800. This year they are moving to a bigger venue and hope to have more children making cards for the kids at MD Anderson.

Bingo Fundraiser on Saturday, March 3rd at 6 pm at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Old Katy. The event will start with an enchilada dinner from 5-6 pm for $6 for anyone who is interested.

The Bingo Fundraiser is $25 per person for 12 games (on 9 cards for each game) with a free bingo dauber for each player. For more information, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com.

Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission.

It’s official, Houstonians through the Houston Fire Fighters raised a record breaking $509,961 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association making them the #1 Fill-the-Boot department in the country for the last 9 out of 10 years raising more than $6.3 million during that time.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-theBoot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will also be out March 10th, April 14th and May 12th to collect funds for the campaign.

The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas.
