Winterizing Your Home Preparing Your Home for Winter (Source: About.com)
Here are ten tips to help you prepare your home for winter: 1) Heating System Inspection • Call an HVAC professional to inspect your furnace. • Stock up on air filters and change them monthly. • Consider switching out your thermostat for a programmable thermostat. • Remove all flammable material from the area surrounding your furnace. 2) Get the Fireplace Ready • Cap or screen the top of the chimney to keep out rodents and birds. • If the chimney hasn’t been cleaned for a while, call a chimney sweep to remove soot and creosote. • Buy firewood or chop wood. Store it in a dry place away from the exterior of your home. • Inspect the fireplace damper for proper opening and closing. • Check the mortar between bricks and tuck-point, if necessary.

3) Check the Exterior, Doors and Windows • Inspect exterior for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes; seal them. • Use weather-stripping around doors to prevent cold air from entering the home and caulk windows. • Replace cracked glass in windows and, if you end up replacing the entire window, prime and paint exposed wood. 4) Inspect Roof, Gutters & Downspouts • If your weather temperature will fall below 32 degrees in the winter, adding extra insulation to the attic will prevent warm air from creeping to your roof and causing ice dams. • Check flashing to ensure water cannot enter the home. • Replace worn roof shingles or tiles. • Clean out the gutters and use a hose to spray water down the downspouts to clear away debris. • Consider installing leaf guards on the gutters or extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the home. 5) Service Weather-Specific Equipment • Drain gas from lawnmowers. • Replace worn rakes. • Clean, dry and store summer gardening equipment. • Sharpen ice choppers and buy bags of ice-melt / sand. 6) Check Foundations • Rake away all debris and edible vegetation from the foundation. • Seal up entry points to keep small animals from crawling under the house. • Tuckpoint or seal foundation cracks. Mice can slip through space as thin as a dime. • Inspect sill plates for dry rot or pest infestation. • Secure crawlspace entrances. 7) Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors • Some cities require a smoke detector in every room. • Buy extra smoke detector batteries and change them when daylight savings ends. • Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and / or water heater.
2
• Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they work. • Buy a fire extinguisher or replace an extinguisher older than 10 years. 8) Prevent Plumbing Freezes • Locate your water main in the event you need to shut it off in an emergency. • Drain all garden hoses. • Insulate exposed plumbing pipes. • Drain air conditioner pipes and if your AC has a water shut-off valve, turn it off. • If you go on vacation, leave the heat on, set to at least 55 degrees. 9) Prepare Landscaping & Outdoor Surfaces • Trim trees if branches hang too close to the house or electrical wires. • Ask a gardener when your trees should be pruned to prevent winter injury. • Plant spring flower bulbs and lift bulbs that cannot winter over such as dahlias in areas where the ground freezes. • Seal driveways, brick patios and wood decks. • Move sensitive potted plants indoors or to a sheltered area. 10) Prepare an Emergency Kit • Buy indoor candles and matches / lighter for use during a power shortage. • Find the phone numbers for your utility companies and tape them near your phone or inside the phone book. • Buy a battery back-up to protect your computer and sensitive electronic equipment. • Store extra bottled water and non-perishable food supplies (including pet food, if you have a pet), blankets and a first-aid kit in a dry and easy-to-access location. • Prepare an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency.

You can leave it in even longer if you turn the oven down to 200 degrees F (95 degrees C). Remove brisket from the oven and slice across the grain. Return to the roasting pan and serve with sauce. 30 YEARS EXPERIENCE
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch, aerate and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

January Seasonal Produce
Get fabulous flavor and great deals by buying seasonal winter vegetables! Look for these winter vegetables at farmers markets (if you’re lucky enough to have year-round markets near you) and in produce departments for the best flavor and greatest value in season. Beets. Choose beets that are firm with a deep red color, smooth surface and slender tap root. You can also judge freshness from the condition of the beet tops. Wilted or decayed greens may indicate a lack of freshness. However, beets that remain firm to the touch, rather than wilted or soft, may still be good. Beets can be stored refrigerated in a plastic bag or vegetable crisper for about 1-2 weeks. The greens should be removed prior to storage. If eating the greens, be sure to thoroughly wash them in cold water. Beet greens will keep refrigerated for about 3-5 days. Broccoli. Fresh broccoli should have fresh-looking light green stalks of consistent thickness. Bud clusters should be tight and dark green, sometimes with a purple hue. Avoid broccoli with tough stems or open, flowering bud clusters. Fresh broccoli will keep refrigerated in
Williamsburg Parish
Cabbage. Cabbage heads should be firm and heavy for their size. Look for crisp blemish-free leaves with an even color that clings tightly to the head. Cabbage will absorb odors of other foods. Refrigerate uncut and unwashed in a plastic bag or container for up to seven days. Carrots. Look for carrots that are well-shaped with firm, smooth exteriors. Colors should be vibrant orange to red orange although there are white and even maroon varieties of carrots available in specialty markets. Tops are typically trimmed closely since the leafy greens decay rapidly and contribute to the decline of the carrot itself. Flabby, soft or wilted carrots, or those that show any mildew, decay, growth cracks or splits, should be avoided. When purchasing fresh carrots with tops, remove the tops and store unwashed in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Celery. Choose stalks with rigid ribs that snap crisply when bent. The inside surface of the ribs should be clean and smooth. Leaves should be fresh with no signs of wilting. Refrigerate covered, unwashed celery for up to 2 weeks. Leave the ribs attached to the stalk until ready for use. Grapefruit. Choose grapefruit that are heavy for their size and well shaped. The skin should be smooth with a blemish-free outer peel. Don’t worry about any slight greening of the skin after harvesting; it does not affect the quality of the fruit. Surface marks that result from the fruit being wind-brushed against the tree do not affect the quality of the fruit either. Keep refrigerated. The fruit will keep for 7-10 days. Grapefruit does not ripen further after harvest.

Greens. Cracked ice around and in packages may help extend shelf life. Keep at proper humidity levels to prevent wilting. Collard greens should be handled like spinach. Kale will freeze at 31° F, -.6° C. Do not store or transport ethylene-sensitive items with commodities that produce ethylene. Two can be lightly frozen several times without sustaining serious damage.
Herbs. Typical shelf life: bag, 5+ days; tub, 7+ days when stored at the proper temperature. Honeydew. Select melons that are firm and smooth with a creamcolored rind. The best melons are heavy for their size, evenly colored, with a sweet fragrance and a stem mark that yields to slight pressure. Honeydews yellow as they ripen. Honeydews will ripen at room temperature, uncovered and away from sunlight. Ripe melons should be kept refrigerated cut or whole in a sealed container for up to three days. Mushrooms. Look for firm, evenly colored mushrooms. Avoid those that are broken, damaged or have soft spots, as well as those that seem damp. A good mushroom will have a good smell. Store fresh mushrooms, unwashed, in the refrigerator for up to three days. Oranges. Reach for firm fruit that is heavy for its size. Take a sniff too. There should be a distinct citrus aroma. Avoid shriveled or soft fruit. Keep your oranges at room temperature. They should last for about two weeks. Make sure to turn them often and check for signs of mold, especially in a high humidity environment. Bell Peppers. Firm, fresh looking peppers with brightly colored skins
6
are the best selections. Avoid shriveled, dull, split or pitted peppers. Store peppers in perforated plastic bags in the refrigerator for up to seven days. Spinach. Choose leaves that are crisp and dark green in color with a nice earthy fragrance. Avoid limp, damaged leaves with yellow spots. Refrigerate unwashed spinach in a plastic bag for up to three days. Before using, rinse thoroughly to remove grit. Squash. For summer squash like zucchini and yellow squash, look for blemish-free skins and average size selections. Overly large choices may be stringy with tough exteriors. For winter squash such as pumpkins, look for shells without crack, bruises or decay. Pumpkins should be fully ripe with firm rinds, bright orange color and heavy weight. Summer squash can be stored refrigerated for 3 to 5 days. Winter squash can be stored whole in a cool (50 to 60 degrees F) dry area for several months. Potatoes. All varieties of potatoes should be uniform in size, clean, firm and smooth. Avoid potatoes with wrinkled skins, soft dark spots and cut surfaces. A green tinge - indicative of prolonged light exposure - is caused by the alkaloid solanine, which can be toxic if eaten in quantity. Store potatoes in a cool, dark and airy place uncovered. They will keep for several weeks. Turnips. Look for smooth-skinned, firm turnips that are heavy for their size. The color will be light-purple on the top fading to bright-white at the bottom. Avoid turnips that are soft, spongy or blemished. Cut off turnip greens and bag them separately for storage (greens keep for just a few days). Roots can keep for about a week when placed in a plastic bags in the refrigerator. www.picktexas.com

Play flour. Sprinkle flour onto a cookie sheet (or use a rimmed baking sheet or large plastic tray to cut down on mess) and let your kids draw or race match box cars in it. When the kids are done, sweep up the flour and put it in a sealable container labeled “play flour.” Reuse as necessary. The possibilities are endless and different textured materials (e.g., cornmeal, oats) will offer fun fodder for sensory exploration.

Make indoor snow people. Buy marshmallows, cake decorating gel tubes and other little candies. Have your kids use toothpicks to assemble snow people, then decorate using the gel; you can also use the gel to stick on sprinkles or other nonpareils. Toothpicks make good arms, rope licorice makes a great scarf. Display for the day and eat for dessert later. Or, don’t tell your kids they’re for eating at all and display until stale. Make pomanders. Take Mandarin or Clementine oranges that are getting slightly hard, and stud with whole cloves (use a toothpick or fork to make starter holes, otherwise the cloves will be hard for little fingers to push in). Make patterns or just randomly insert cloves all over the orange. Display a whole bowl as a centerpiece or place a few here and there to fill your house with a lovely scent. Make Kool-aid play dough. This is really easy and quick and kids love to guess what color the play dough will end up when you add the water (sometimes a blue package of Kool-aid isn’t blue at all). Combine 2 ½ cups flour, ½ cup salt, 1 tbsp. cream of tartar, and a packet of Kool-aid drink mix. Add 2 cups boiling water, 3 tbsp. oil and stir to combine. Cool the mixture slightly and knead it with your hands to make smooth dough. We’ve made this dough for gifts and the kids love the kneading process. We do this on the kitchen table, but if your surface is prone to staining you may want to knead on a baking sheet or cutting board. The Kool-aid can make your hands colorful for a while, but much less so than using food coloring. The best part is that it smells good enough to eat and won’t hurt the kids if they sample a bit while making pretend cookies. www.bostonmamas.com

DRYER SAFETY TIPS
Each year, on average, clogged clothes dryer vents cause over 12,500 house fires, 15 deaths and 400 injuries. Oddly enough, some of the innovative designs of the newest homes put those homeowners at the highest risk. Anytime your dryer vent goes up instead of only parallel to the ground in order to vent out, you have a higher risk of fire. Here are some helpful hints in order to lower your risks: - Clean the lint screen/filter before or after drying each load of clothes. If clothing is still damp at the end of a typical drying cycle or drying requires longer times than normal, this may be a sign that the lint screen or the exhaust duct is blocked. - Clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct periodically. Check the outside dryer vent while the dryer is operating to make sure exhaust air is escaping. If it is not, the vent or the exhaust duct may be blocked. To remove a blockage in the exhaust path, it may be necessary to disconnect the exhaust duct from the dryer. Remember to reconnect the ducting to the dryer and outside vent before using the dryer again. - Clean behind the dryer, where lint can build up. Have a qualified service person clean the interior of the dryer chassis periodically to minimize the amount of lint accumulation. Keep the area around the dryer clean and free of clutter. - Replace plastic or foil, accordion-type ducting material with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct. Most manufacturers specify the use of a rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct, which provides maximum airflow. The flexible plastic or foil type duct can more easily trap lint and is more susceptible to kinks or crushing, which can greatly reduce the airflow. - Take special care when drying clothes that have been soiled with

volatile chemicals such as gasoline, cooking oils, cleaning agents, or finishing oils and stains. If possible, wash the clothing more than once to minimize the amount of volatile chemicals on the clothes and, preferably, hang the clothes to dry. If using a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and a drying cycle that has a cool-down period at the end of the cycle. To prevent clothes from igniting after drying, do not leave the dried clothes in the dryer or piled in a laundry basket. Fires have been known to ignite in clothes up to 45 minutes after the drying cycle has ended. Visit the FEMA website to learn more, www. fema.gov. Submitted by Dale Ross.
Soda Bottle Polar Bear By: Amanda Formaro Difficulty: Easy Age: 6 and up
Turn an empty two-liter soda bottle into this cute giggling polar bear! Choose your child’s favorite colors for the hair and mittens. Celebrate winter! What you’ll need: Gesso (recommended: Liquitex Basics Gesso) White and black acrylic craft paint Paint brush 2 liter plastic bottle 2 mismatched socks Black marker Pink crayon Scissors 12” white yarn White craft glue Rice, pebbles, pennies, sand, etc (for weight)

Master #100394 • TECL #22809
Pattern (http://crafts.kaboose.com/sodabottle_polar_bear_template. pdf) How to make it: Remove all labels from bottle and rinse out well. Allow to dry, add some weights (pennies, sand, rice, etc.) and place cap back on bottle. Paint bottle with one coat of gesso and let dry. Paint with one coat of white paint and let dry. Cut one of the socks on half. You will be using the end with the cuff. Use scissors to fringe the cut end of the sock. Use pattern to draw face on the front of the bottle using a black marker. Fill in the nose with black paint. Use a pink crayon to color circles for cheeks. Using the pattern, cut out two mittens from the other sock. Glue one mitten so that it is partially covering the bear’s mouth. Glue the other one lower and pointing toward her belly. Place the cuff end of the first pink sock over the top of the bottle cap. Use yarn to tie a knot around the sock in between the cuff and the fringe. Tie yarn into a bow trim off excess ends, leaving a couple of inches in place. Arrange the fringe so that it flops on top of the hat. Tips: Don’t toss out your mismatched socks! Save them for fun winter projects such as this. Instead of a 2-liter bottle, you can make this smaller with a water bottle. We used a 3-liter bottle for ours! Gesso is a craft medium that allows paint to adhere to many surfaces. It is available in the art department of your local craft supply store. www.kaboose.com

KEYS Mentoring
One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child. To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

mentor Jim Burns visited Firethorne representatives last week to thank them for their generous support. The KEYS (Keep Encouraging Youth toward Success) mentor program is offered to Katy ISD students who are on the brink of success. Often, these students have been challenged by life circumstances outside of their control. Mentors meet with their students on campus each week during the school year, in between the school day. When Reyes’ mentor first met him, it wasn’t with the intent of becoming his mentor, it was with the intent of helping him organize his backpack, locker and life. After several weeks of helping Reyes get organized, Burns naturally fell into the role of becoming his mentor. For the next six years, Burns helped Reyes recognize his gifts, talents, intelligence and encouraged him to pursue his dreams.

Firethorne Leads the way as KEYS Platinum Sponsor
Firethorne has committed to Katy ISD’s Partners in Education (PIE) as the first KEYS Scholarship Platinum Sponsor for 2011. As a KEYS sponsor, Firethorne is helping to create scholarships for students who have participated in KEYS through their senior year. This is the first year that PIE has opened sponsorship levels for KEYS, with 100 percent of the sponsorship dollars going directly to KEYS Scholarships. Former KEYS student Eduardo Reyes and his KEYS

GIFTED STUDENTS GET CREATIVE WITH TRASH
Hundreds of gifted and talented elementary students enjoyed getting together at the Katy Parents of Gifted & Talented (KPGT) GT Create Date, to make puppets out of recyclable materials. Students and parents let their imaginations loose as they turned trash to treasure at this fun event co-sponsored by KPGT and KISD. Led by professional puppeteer Greg Ruhe from Puppet Pizzazz and professional artist Taylor Perry, the children enjoyed an inspiring and hilarious puppet show before launching into their own creations. The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented (KPGT) organization was formed in 1987. It is a non-profit organization. KPGT aims promote the welfare of gifted and talented students by empowering KISD families and educators with information, resources, tools and voice to ensure opportunities that encourage gifted students’ passion for learning. Further information is available on KPGT’s website at www.kpgt.org.

Demographic Update Shows Continued Growth for Katy ISD
During the October 24th Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Pat Guseman, president of Population and Survey Analysts (PASA), presented the 2011 Demographic Update that shows steady growth for Katy ISD, at a rate of approximately three percent each year over the next five years. While slightly slower than the rapid growth experienced between 2001 and 2009, the report shows approximately 23,000 additional students moving to the district during the next 10 years. The district also announced that as part of the Long Range Facilities Plan process, Katy ISD has entered into the initial stages of the Attendance Boundary Modification (ABM) process. Last November, Katy ISD voters approved a bond referendum that included five new campuses – three elementary schools, one junior high and one high school. Four of the five campuses are set to open in fall 2012 and High School No. 7 is slated to open in fall 2013. Katy ISD is a TEA Recognized district serving more than 62,000 students. Covering 181 square miles west of downtown Houston, Katy ISD is comprised of 53 campuses and with more than 8,000 employees is one of the largest employers in the West Houston area.
