THANKSGIVING TRIVIA
• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is

believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.
GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap.
Williamsburg Parish
• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

Homeowners in the south should give special attention to exposed water pipes during the winter months. Freezing pipes are a problem in warmer climates where they often run through un-insulated or under insulated attics or crawl spaces. Although we only have a few cold snaps per season, it’s still necessary to protect exposed water pipes. Leaving pipes unprotected can cause them to burst, which can result in a tremendous amount of damage to the home and the contents inside. You can drastically reduce your chance of property damage by preparing your water pipes before a hard freeze. The following suggestions can help you accomplish this task. What Kind of Water Pipes Freeze and When? Water pipes have the potential to freeze and burst when the outside temperature reaches 20°F or below. Pipes that are most vulnerable

to freeze are usually exposed to severe cold, such as: outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, water pipes in basements, water pipes in crawl spaces, water pipes in attics, water pipes in garages and water pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation. Prepare While the Climate Is Warm Drain water from the swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines, following manufacturer’s or installer’s directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping. Remove and drain outdoor hoses. Store in a shed or garage. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs if possible. Cover hose bibs with insulated covers. Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located and are in unheated areas. Look in the basement, crawl space, attic, garage and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. A hot water supply line can freeze just as a cold water supply line can freeze if the water is not running through the pipe and the water temperature in the pipe is cold. Consider installing products made to insulate water pipes like a “pipe sleeve” or installing UL-listed “heat tape,” “heat cable,” or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Many products are available at your local building supplies retailer. Newspaper can also provide some protection to exposed pipes, as long as the cold temperatures are not frequent or prolonged. Take Action during Cold Weather Keep the garage door closed if there are water supply lines located inside. Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing.

Keep the heating thermostat set at a consistent temperature both day and night. If going out of town during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home. Set the thermostat to a temperature no lower than 55°F, and open cabinet doors where there is plumbing. If you are going out of town and have a heat pump system, and if the temperature is forecast to be extremely low, you may need to switch the setting to emergency heat and reduce the thermostat setting to 55°F. Thawing Frozen Pipes after the Storm If you suspect that the pipe is frozen, keep the faucet open. Water will begin to flow as you treat the frozen area, which will help to melt more ice in the pipe. Make sure you know where the main water valve is located outside of your home. The frozen pipe may already be broken and it will leak when the water is thawed. If this is the case, you’ll need to turn off the main water valve to your home until the leak is repaired. Apply heat to the frozen portion of the pipe. This can be accomplished by using the following sources of heat: a heating pad, electric hair dryer, a portable space heater or wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Make sure that electrical cords do not come into contact with water. Do not attempt to use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove or other open flame devices; they present a serious fire hazard as well as release lethal carbon monoxide fumes into the air. Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. Call a licensed plumber if you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not within reach or if you can’t get the pipe to thaw. Inspect all other faucets in your home to find out if additional pipes are frozen. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze also. www.texashelp.tamu.edu

Thanksgiving on a Budget
With the economy still slumping, a lavish Thanksgiving might not be on the table this year. But we can still—and should—feast. We just have to squeeze our fistful of dollars a little harder. Go for What’s in Season When planning your meal, first consult the calendar. This is no time for asparagus and artichokes. Buy produce in season and you will get much more for your money, not to mention livelier flavors. Brussels sprouts are at their peak in late November; farmers’ markets should have them in huge quantities, still on their stalks. (Serving them sliced rather than whole not only makes them more tantalizing but also helps them go further.) Fresh herbs have become available all year round, so it can be a better deal to buy a bunch rather than an expensive jar of the dried kind—fresh sage might be $1.99 compared with $6.50 for half an ounce dried, which could go stale by the next time you need it. Buy a Supermarket Bird In an ideal world we would all be eating heritage turkeys. They have outstanding texture and flavor, and when we buy them, we help preserve unique breeds. But they are anything but a bargain: A 12to 14-pound bird, which feeds eight, from Heritage Foods USA goes for $159 including shipping, or more than $10 a pound. Supermarket turkeys can be fine alternatives for less than $2 a pound. Just be sure to buy a free-range or organic turkey rather than an industrial one injected with flavored oil. Plus, brining will add flavor and improve texture in even the least expensive birds, all for about $2.29 for a big box of kosher salt, an ingredient that can be used to season the rest of the meal. Start From Scratch Some convenience foods are often ridiculously cheap, loaded as they are with high-fructose corn syrup and chemicals, yet they rarely taste better than homemade. To cut costs and ensure the tastiest of feasts, make your own piecrust, cranberry sauce and gravy rather than opening up a box or can. Instead of paying $8 for a single loaf from an artisanal bakery, bake up some dinner rolls with yeast, butter and flour for a little over $7. A bakery-bought pecan pumpkin pie can go for upwards of $50, but a homemade version will run you $15 — and $5 less if you omit the pecans.

Know When to Buy Canned or Frozen Some canned and frozen foods are fine alternatives to fresh. Canned pumpkin is one of the great American ingredients and the generic brands are as good as premium labels. You could make a pie using a fresh cheese pumpkin for $5, but you would wind up with a more watery filling than one made from a $2.49 can. And frozen vegetables can be both superior to and cheaper than out-of-season fresh ones; a bag of Cascadian Farms flash-frozen baby peas is $2.69, compared with $3.99 a pound or more for fresh snow peas, the only kind you are likely to find in November. Don’t Be a Slave to a Recipe If you don’t want to spring for three kinds of herbs in your soup or stuffing, choose one. Or none. Nothing but salt and pepper is ever really indispensable. Substitute water for canned stock in a soup; use a slurry of flour and water to thicken your pan gravy rather than making turkey stock. Instead of investing in a can of shortening for a piecrust, substitute butter for the two tablespoons needed in the recipe. The great thing about Thanksgiving is that the whole really is much more than the parts. Cut corners where you have to and all anyone will notice in the end is a heaping plate. Make It a Potluck Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. People are happy to pitch in and bring a dish or two and potlucks are trendy right now. Wine is not included in the budget here, so be open about suggesting a suitable-for-turkey California Zinfandel, like Rancho Zabaco Dancing Bull, which is less than $10. www.epicurious.com

surviving black friday
Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, can be thrilling and stressful all at the same time. With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on in-demand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier: Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping. This will make your day more organized, and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make. • Sign up for store e-mail updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale. • Print out any online coupons you may have. • Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Borders and Barnes & Noble offer such programs. • Consider outlet shopping. The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. This will not help your shopping, per se, but will make you feel happy and satisfied. • Get a good’s night sleep the night before. Thanks to all that food in your belly it shouldn’t be too hard to fall asleep. The Day Of Thanksgiving Day Sales: • Know exactly the time that the stores you want to hit are open, and go to the store that has the best deals, and/or the gift you want to get the most first. Be there at least a half-hour before it opens if the gift is popular. • Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior. • Be caffeinated and full – don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach. • Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathon-shopping day to grab some grub from the food court. • Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds. • Don’t worry about purchasing little gifts today, such as stocking stuffers, but rather focus on gifts that are bigger, harder to find, and more expensive. • Consider this a good day to look for that new winter coat or little black dress you need. Clothing sales are usually very good on Black Friday, because so many people are already in the stores looking for toys and gifts. • If a product is not available, but the store offers a rain check, take it. Make sure that when you cash in your rain check you are getting the price that the product was listed at for that day. www.kaboose.com.

10 REASONS TO BE THANKFUL FOR YOUR KIDS
Parenthood is like twenty years of survival training. You learn to imagine the worst. Did you pack the diapers, wipes and extra clothes? Have you planned for any disaster? Who needs TV and movies with children around? They make your life less boring. For ten silly reasons to be thankful for your kids see my list of suggestions below: 1. Money - If you had too much money, you’d get into trouble. Children help you spend it. I ate all the food. My shoes are too small. It’s pizza day at school! 2. Quality Control - Is your bed well made? Are you doors well hinged? With kids, you’ll always know. They’re like quality control testers for all of your things. The spindle came off the railing! 3. Immune System - Who needs a flu shot with children around? They keep your immune system working. They bring germs home from school and spread them around. I want a hug and kiss! 4. Silly - What better excuse could you have to act silly? Parents can run through the sprinkler. They can try out new toys and play video games. I bought it for the kids! 5. Garbage- Don’t buy a garbage disposal, just have kids! They eat everything in sight. They’ll make rockets from boxes and phones out of cans. Trash is better than toys! 6. Mind - Kids make you think on your feet. They keep your mind sharp. Why? Why? Why? Parents make up nonsense just to shut their kids up. The sky is blue because... 7. Skills - Kids hone your skills for almost everything. They teach you how to organize. You get to practice negotiating on a daily basis. I’ll give you a piece of candy! 8. Exercise - Becoming a parent is better than joining the gym. Kids make you chase them around. You’re constantly cleaning, and packing and lugging their things. Mommy, I want to play tag! 9. Self-Esteem - Mommy, you’re beautiful. You’re a really good singer. Kids give daily compliments. Even when you know they’re wrong, it makes you feel good. You could win American Idol! 10. Embarrassing - After having children, you won’t get embarrassed. They make you less self-conscious. Kids leave the house wearing two pairs of pants. Is that snot or puke on your shirt? After having children, nothing seems loud. Kids make lots of noise. Who knew having a shower could feel like a luxury? I got a full night sleep! Who knew reading the paper for five whole minutes could feel like a gift from above? Having children can make you appreciate life. Be thankful for your kids! Tammy White – www.associatedcontent.com

One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child.
To be a KEYS Mentor, you need:

Students Continue the Tradition of Strong Performance on AP Exams
Katy ISD’s tradition of increasing student participation and strong performance on Advanced Placement (AP) exams continues as the district recently learned that each one of its six high school campuses showed an increase in the number of students participating in the exams. In addition, every high school campus exceeded the state and national percentage of AP students making a qualifying score of 3 or better on the exams. Katy ISD is among the 388 U.S. public school districts (one of only 23 in Texas) to be listed on the 2011 College Board AP Achievement List. This list identifies districts that simultaneously achieved increases in access to AP courses while maintaining or improving the rate of students earning a score of 3 or better on the exams – the score that generally qualifies a student for college credit. In May 2011, more than 3,000 Katy ISD students took more than 7,200 AP exams, with 79 percent of the exams earning a score of 3 or better. This reflects a 24 percent increase from 2010 in the number of exams earning these high scores. Advanced Placement and PreAP courses are designed to challenge students beyond grade level academic courses and prepare them for success in future advanced coursework. Katy ISD recognizes that support and encouragement from the campus, the teacher, and parents are critical to student success. Therefore, the district follows an inclusive enrollment model for AP and PreAP courses that provides support systems for student success. Katy ISD offers AP courses in English, mathematics, science, social studies, fine arts, computer science and languages other than English. For more information about AP or PreAP, visit www.katyisd.org/gt.

CY-FAIR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 2011 Mobility Forum
Chamber members and non-members are invited to participate in the discussion on how the region addresses mobility challenges in the face of continued growth. There will be two sessions with a luncheon in between. The featured speaker is Commissioner Ned J. Holmes. Holmes is a commissioner of the Texas Transportation Commission, which oversees statewide activities of the Texas Department of Transportation. Additional forum speakers will be: Steve Clark, PE, ARUP; Mark Ellis, Gulf Coast Rail District and Texas State Representative Allen Fletcher. Currently, the chamber is working with the Texas Department of Transportation on the re-designation application process of U.S. 290 to an interstate status. The status change could possibly allow additional federal funds toward the proposed improvements of U.S. 290 along with allowing greater visibility for domestic and international firms seeking to relocate in the Cy-Fair Houston market sector. In addition, the construction of the SH 99; Segment E (I-10 West to U.S. 290) has begun with an anticipated completion over the next 18-24 months. Once completed, Segment E will allow an alternative route for commuters and businesses along U.S. 290 traveling to the West Houston Energy Corridor. The Mobility Forum will be Thursday, November 3rd from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress. Individual tickets are $60 and sponsorship tables of 10 range from $600 to $2,500. Lunch will be served. For more information, contact Casey Cargle at 281-373-1390 or casey@cyfairchamber.com or visit www. cyfairchamber.com.

NEW CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP LEADER WELCOMED
Living Word Lutheran Church in Katy is pleased to announce that Lisa Jastram of Sugar Land, TX, has joined the staff as the 9:30 AM contemporary worship leader. Jastram is no stranger to the Katy area having performed in many of the area churches, libraries and schools with Oasis for Children, her educational entertainment venture. She comes to Living Word at an exciting time in the life of the church as they complete their Envision Project begun less than a year ago. The church has been installing new lighting, screens, projectors and systems upgrades to maximize possibilities for meaningful and exciting worship. Sept. 25th was the first Sunday for the congregation to experience the new amenities. One of Jastram’s goals were to make the service more intergenerational and family friendly. She also hopes to see more of the arts incorporated into worship including dance and visual arts. Previously, Jastram has led the musical portion of worship at St. Martin’s Lutheran in Sugar Land, New Hope Lutheran in Missouri City and Grace UCC in Alief. Her background as a missionary child raised in Japan matches well with Living Word’s emphasis on global mission.
