CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY YARD CONTEST WINNERS

Once again, our residents did a wonderful job with their Christmas lights and decorations. The choice was very difficult as there were so many beautifully decorated homes to choose from. The judging was done by Cyndy Thompson, our new Yard-of-theMonth Chairperson who also managed this annual Christmas Holiday Yard contest. As usual, the contest resulted in the selection of a first, second and third place prize winner and each award recipient had the appropriate sign placed in their lawn and a photograph of their yard posted on our website. This year the winners were: 1st Place 22202 Unicorns Horn 22303 Bucktrout 2nd Place 3rd Place 22450 Bucktrout As in 2010, some homes were selected for an honorable mention. These were:

Jack & Barbara Hendrie Soli & Sandra Irani Don & Melissa Sanders

22015 Joshua Kendall 22831 Bucktrout 1631 Earl of Dunmore

And although not part of the formal program, Cyndy also looked at the cul-de-sac islands and judged the best to be: Joshua Kendall Thanks to each and every resident who decorated their home for the holidays, thus adding festive cheer to the neighborhood.

JANUARY YARD-OF-THE-MONTH

After a short hiatus, we have re-started the Yard-of-the-Month program whereby each month the yards in our subdivision are judged and if the resident of the one that is considered to have the best display is in good standing with the Association and agrees to accept the accolade, it is designated as the Yard-of-the-Month. A sign is placed in that yard throughout the duration of the month, a photograph and write-up are posted on the website and the winners are mentioned in this newsletter. To start the program for 2012 congratulations are due to Frank and Marilyn Rodriguez of 22102 Vobe who have been selected to receive this award for January. The Rodriguez’s have lived in the Settlement since 2005. If you don’t get the chance to drive by and see their nicely manicured yard, a photograph is posted the Yard-of-the-Month page of our website www.wsmaonline.org.

BOARD MEETING MINUTES

There was no Board meeting held in December. The draft minutes of the January meeting will appear in the next edition of this newsletter.

NEXT WSMA BOARD MEETING

The next meeting of the WSMA Board of Directors will be held in the clubhouse on Hoyt Lane at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, February 21, 2012. If you wish to be placed on the agenda, please contact PCMI at 281-870-0585 at least three days prior to the meeting.

And for those who have not yet registered, you are strongly urged to do so, as this is the best mechanism we have to quickly communicate with our residents. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

RESIDENT DIRECTORY MAINTENANCE

If any resident wishes to change the information that they have previously provided for publication in the directory, they can do so by using the Residents’ Directory Entry Form accessible via the Registration page of our website www.wsmaonline.org. When the information is received, it will be updated on the database. If the resident indicates that he or she wants that information published in the directory, it will be sent out in a monthly update to all registered residents who can use it to manually annotate their copy and it will be marked for inclusion in the next edition. A log will be maintained of all changes since the last publication, which will be emailed to any resident who requests it. This way, the directory can remain useful throughout its operational life.

UPDATE OF EMAIL ADDRESSES

This is just a reminder that the email addresses, to which emails from the WSMA Webmaster are broadcast, are those that have been registered on the www.WSMAonline.org website by the residents

2

themselves. This email distribution list is used to disseminate important announcements to Settlement residents. However, email addresses do tend to be rather dynamic, as residents change their ISP for a variety of reasons and when they do so, unless they reregister their new email addresses on the Registration page of the web site, they will no longer receive these broadcast emails. So please, when conveying a new email address to those in your address book, please also update our mailing list by removing your old email address and replacing it with your new one. This will ensure that you continue to receive the timely announcements on important Settlement activities.

New residents to our subdivision are requested to use the same form to register their information for inclusion in the directory or to state their desire not to have their information included. This request is included in the “Welcome Packet” given to all new residents, as soon as PCMI is made aware of the change in ownership.

Reminder About House painting

Residents need to be sure and pay attention to the state of the paint on their houses. Many of the houses in the settlement are of an age that they will soon need to be repainted or sided. Please be proactive in getting this done when necessary. Doing this before you have a problem will not only keep your house looking nicer, but doing it early can end up saving you money! But please remember that all such work does require Architectural Review Committee approval. This is obtained by completing a “Request For Home Improvement Approval” form and mailing it to PCMI. A blank copy of this form is included in this newsletter and is also available on the Board Notices and Forms page our website at WSMAonline.org.

Anyone noticing a streetlight that is out or has some other malfunction is encouraged to report the problem to CenterPoint via either of these two methods without delay. Our Association is charged for every streetlight each month, irrespective of whether or not the light is functioning. So please help us get value for your hard earned money!

Grand Parkway

To report a burned out street light, any resident may call CenterPoint directly at 713-207-2222. However, for those with Internet access, you may also make this report on-line. For those interested, the website address to do this is http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage. Then enter your contact details so that they can get back to you if more information is required. On the following page enter the details of the light(s) with the problem. Just as you would if reporting the outage via the telephone, you will need to provide the street address where the light is located and the 6-digit number that is prominently displayed on the front of the pole. Under normal circumstances the crew will be out to fix the problem within 7 working days.

The Clubhouse is available for rental for non-profit activities to all residents in good standing with the Association The fees are as follows: BIG ROOM RENTAL FEE: Up to 49 people - $50 50-100 people - $75 Plus a refundable security deposit: No alcohol served - $100 Alcohol served or the attendance of 20 or more between the ages of 13 and 21- $200* SMALL ROOM RENTAL FEE: Up to 20 people - $30 Plus a refundable security deposit of $50 *Note that when alcohol is served, two security guards must also be on duty. The requirement for two is mandated by the Sheriff’s Department. When no alcohol is being served but the event is attended by 50 or more people and continues past 6:00 PM or 20 or more people between the ages of 13 and 21 unaccompanied by their family members, one security guard is required. The charge for the security guards, which is paid directly to the officers, is the responsibility of the resident requesting the rental. All deposits refundable upon passing the exit inspection. Estate l a e R r u o Y ife! L r o f e c r u Reso Veterinary Public Health LEASH LAW

Our Family Serving Your Family Since 1976 Houston Area Events

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more then six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question or 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle or 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk to street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

January Seasonal Produce

Beets. Choose beets that are firm with a deep red color, smooth surface and slender tap root. You can also judge freshness from the condition of the beet tops. Wilted or decayed greens may indicate a lack of freshness. However, beets that remain firm to the touch, rather than wilted or soft, may still be good. Beets can be stored refrigerated in a plastic bag or vegetable crisper for about 1-2 weeks. The greens should be removed prior to storage. If eating the greens, be sure to thoroughly wash them in cold water. Beet greens will keep refrigerated for about 3-5 days.

Broccoli. Fresh broccoli should have fresh-looking light green stalks of consistent thickness. Bud clusters should be tight and dark green, sometimes with a purple hue. Avoid broccoli with tough stems or open, flowering bud clusters. Fresh broccoli will keep refrigerated in the crisper for up to 3 to 5 days. Cabbage. Cabbage heads should be firm and heavy for their size. Look for crisp blemish-free leaves with an even color that clings tightly to the head. Cabbage will absorb odors of other foods. Refrigerate uncut and unwashed in a plastic bag or container for up to seven days.

Carrots. Look for carrots that are well-shaped with firm, smooth exteriors. Colors should be vibrant orange to red orange although there are white and even maroon varieties of carrots available in specialty markets. Tops are typically trimmed closely since the leafy greens decay rapidly and contribute to the decline of the carrot itself. Flabby, soft or wilted carrots, or those that show any mildew, decay, growth cracks or splits, should be avoided. When purchasing fresh carrots with tops, remove the tops and store unwashed in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Celery. Choose stalks with rigid ribs that snap crisply when bent. The inside surface of the ribs should be clean and smooth. Leaves should be fresh with no signs of wilting. Refrigerate covered, unwashed celery for up to 2 weeks. Leave the ribs attached to the stalk until ready for use. Grapefruit. Choose grapefruit that are heavy for their size and well shaped. The skin should be smooth with a blemish-free outer peel. Don’t worry about any slight greening of the skin after harvesting; it does not affect the quality of the fruit. Surface marks that result from the fruit being wind-brushed against the tree do not affect the quality of the fruit either. Keep refrigerated. The fruit will keep for 7-10 days. Grapefruit does not ripen further after harvest. Greens. Cracked ice around and in packages may help extend shelf life. Keep at proper humidity levels to prevent wilting. Collard greens should be handled like spinach. Kale will freeze at 31° F, -.6° C. Do not store or transport ethylene-sensitive items with commodities that produce ethylene. Two can be lightly frozen several times without sustaining serious damage.

Herbs. Typical shelf life: bag, 5+ days; tub, 7+ days when stored at the proper temperature.

if eaten in quantity. Store potatoes in a cool, dark and airy place uncovered. They will keep for several weeks.

Mushrooms. Look for firm, evenly colored mushrooms. Avoid those that are broken, damaged or have soft spots, as well as those that seem damp. A good mushroom will have a good smell. Store fresh mushrooms, unwashed, in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Turnips. Look for smooth-skinned, firm turnips that are heavy for their size. The color will be light-purple on the top fading to bright-white at the bottom. Avoid turnips that are soft, spongy or blemished. Cut off turnip greens and bag them separately for storage (greens keep for just a few days). Roots can keep for about a week when placed in a plastic bags in the refrigerator. www.picktexas.com

Oranges. Reach for firm fruit that is heavy for its size. Take a sniff too. There should be a distinct citrus aroma. Avoid shriveled or soft fruit. Keep your oranges at room temperature. They should last for about two weeks. Make sure to turn them often and check for signs of mold, especially in a high humidity environment. Spinach. Choose leaves that are crisp and dark green in color with a nice earthy fragrance. Avoid limp, damaged leaves with yellow spots. Refrigerate unwashed spinach in a plastic bag for up to three days. Before using, rinse thoroughly to remove grit. Squash. For summer squash like zucchini and yellow squash, look for blemish-free skins and average size selections. Overly large choices may be stringy with tough exteriors. For winter squash such as pumpkins, look for shells without crack, bruises or decay. Pumpkins should be fully ripe with firm rinds, bright orange color and heavy weight. Summer squash can be stored refrigerated for 3 to 5 days. Winter squash can be stored whole in a cool (50 to 60 degrees F) dry area for several months. Sweet Potatoes. All varieties of potatoes should be uniform in size, clean, firm and smooth. Avoid potatoes with wrinkled skins, soft dark spots and cut surfaces. A green tinge - indicative of prolonged light exposure - is caused by the alkaloid solanine, which can be toxic

Keys news - KEYS Mentoring

One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child.

Brad McCary, DVM

To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

Community Events Keep Kids Connected

Valentine Card Making event on February 4th in the afternoon at Bonnie Holland Elementary. Last year the event was put together by a few moms in a playgroup and over 50 people showed up and they raised almost $2800. This year they are moving to a bigger venue and hope to have more children making cards for the kids at MD Anderson. Bingo Fundraiser on Saturday, March 3rd at 6 pm at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Old Katy. The event will start with an enchilada dinner from 5-6 pm for $6 for anyone who is interested. The Bingo Fundraiser is $25 per person for 12 games (on 9 cards for each game) with a free bingo dauber for each player. For more information, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com.

Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission. For more information about Keep Kids Connected go to the website, www.keepkidsconnected.org or check out their Facebook page! If you would like to get on the contact list for upcoming events, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com.

NATURE PROGRAMS FOR PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN

The second Saturday of each month, Keep Kids Connected collects aluminum beverage cans at the Tradition Bank Pin Oak Branch location from 9 am-12 pm. The proceeds from recycling the cans helps fund the purchase of Netbook computers and pediatric cancer research.
