International Themed Block Party and Spring Fling!

The Westgate Social Committee met in January to plan the Westgate 2012 Social Season. They have more members this year, so they’re hoping to have even more events. To start the fun, they want to have a Block Party!

This particular block party will be a potluck (bring a dish to share) and have an International theme; they would like multiple block parties throughout the neighborhood, so we can continue to get to know our neighbors and become a closer and therefore safer, neighborhood. We just need people to be the contact people for their area or section; we will help organize it for you. After that, everyone brings their favorite, authentic dish to share with neighbors. And the party will be as vibrant or as relaxed as you make it; think of something to do that really says “This is who we are” - bring some music, have a contest, think of games for the kids – whatever - and the social committee will help you achieve your goals.

Contact us and one thing that the social committee will do is help you get the word out to your area about the details of the party plans. The weekend for the International Block Party is March 23rd and 24th (Friday or Saturday - whichever you choose), before the weather gets Houston Hot; so plan your Spring Fling/International Block Party and come on out and help keep Westgate hoppin’! While scouring the neighborhood looking for the best decorations, the committee loved all the lights, the Grinches, the giant blowup sleigh and reindeer, the Santa and helicopter, the Santa and airplane, the doors wrapped like presents, the trains, the classic and the eclectic color schemes and so many other things too numerous to name here. Our neighborhood “did itself proud” this year, more than other years, I think.

Westgate March Market Day at the Big Park

Calling all Vendors in our Westgate neighborhood: March 31st, the last Saturday of the month, starting at 10 AM and going through 3 PM, Westgate will have its first March Market Day. Donna Lamy arranged a Market Day at her house in the fall and received rave reviews from the attendees - both vendors and shoppers. She’s going to do it again, but in even bigger fashion at the big park by the pool. One Stop Shopping Opportunity!

She wants Artists, Knitters, Crafters, Handmade items, Bakers & Chefs, Jewelry & Make Up, Candles, Handy Men, Pest Control, Electricians, Plumbers and anything unique you can bring to our tables and tents.

Recycling for Charity in Westgate

Donna and her son are on a recycling project; everything they collect goes toward funding the Ronald McDonald house which provides family care and lodging for families of children receiving cancer treatment. They can come by on Thursday mornings before 10 AM to pick up recycling from you. They collect paper items, cardboard boxes, glass and cans. • Plastic needs to be separated in a bag and will only be picked up on the last Thursday of the month.

• They can also pick up large metal items with an email prior to Thursday - such as washer/dryers, BBQ grills etc.

Have you ever needed to call someone for repairs or to have work done, but you didn’t want to just pick someone out of the yellow pages? Well, we’ve begun a document that is our neighborhood’s personal “Angie’s List.� All people and businesses listed on it are recommended by people in Westgate who have had personal experiences with them.

To submit a name or business, please email Kimberly McGaughy at kbmcgaughy@gmail.com; you should give your name and address (for proof of Westgate residency only, address will not be published), the name and contact information of the business you’re recommending and a description of the experience you had with this person or company (what work they did, maybe a price range, how you felt about their work, etc.). Thanks for helping out your neighbors with this information!

We also have a list for businesses actually owned by Westgate residents called “Westgate Residents who provide Services.� If you are a resident who owns a business, follow the same process, but instead of a description of a personal experience, provide a description of your services, price range, history of your business, etc. We’d love to support our neighbors! • At the end of February: peach, apple and pear fruit must be thinned to insure quality production at harvest.

• Give groundcovers a haircut. They will spread faster.

• Divide daylilies, daisies and other perennials now.

RECIPES Three Cheese Chicken Bake

INGREDIENTS: 1/4 cup chopped onion 1/4 cup chopped green pepper 1 tbs and 1-1/2 tsp butter or margarine 1/2 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup, undiluted 1/2 (8 ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained 1/2 (2 ounce) jar chopped pimientos, drained 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 (8 ounce) package noodles, cooked 1-1/2 cups diced cooked chicken 1 cup ricotta or cottage cheese 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons buttered bread crumbs DIRECTIONS: In a skillet, sauté onion and green pepper in butter until tender.

Remove from the heat. Stir in the soup, mushrooms, pimientos and basil; set aside.

In a large bowl, combine noodles, chicken and cheeses; add mushroom sauce and mix well. Transfer to a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees F for 40 to 45 minutes or until bubbly. Sprinkle with crumbs. Bake 15 minutes longer.

INGREDIENTS: 4 large baking potatoes, baked 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon paprika 1/8 teaspoon pepper 8 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled 1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese 1/2 cup sour cream 4 green onions, sliced

DIRECTIONS: Cut potatoes in half lengthwise; scoop out pulp, leaving a 1/4-in. shell (save pulp for another use). Place potatoes skins on a greased baking sheet. Combine oil, Parmesan cheese, salt, garlic powder, paprika and pepper; brush over both sides of skins. Bake at 475 degrees F for 7 minutes; turn. Bake until crisp, about 7 minutes more.

Sprinkle bacon and cheddar cheese inside skins. Bake 2 minutes longer or until the cheese is melted. Top with sour cream and onions.

Serve immediately.

THE CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION PRESENTS “SALUTE TO OUR HEROES”

Salute to Our Heroes will honor the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event will fund scholarships for graduating students from CFISD.

The event will be hosted by the Houston Astros announcer Bill Brown and will feature Army Ranger Involved in “Black Hawk Down” Mission Keni Thomas, Bronze Star for Valor recipient, is an engaging speaker whose story captivates audiences from beginning to end. The highly successful movie “Blackhawk Down” is based on his Army Company’s mission in Mogadishu, Somalia. BAILADORAS BEGIN CONTEST SEASON

After a football season filled with great half-time performances, the LCHS Drill Team got right to work on competition dances. They kicked off the Contest Season at the Crowd Pleasers Winter Showcase held at Dulles High School on December 10th. This competition focused on solos, duets, ensembles and officer groups.

Dance officers Nicole Miller, Paige Houghtaling, Amy Redmond, Anna Berry and Kourtney Zarker received several awards in the Officer category including Best in Class for their Lyrical, Modern and Novelty routines as well as Outstanding Choreography and Crowd Pleaser awards for Lyrical. Officer Jazz received 2nd Runner Up. The officers earned Super Sweepstakes status for 3 routines scoring over 90 and were declared Grand Champions in the Officer Category.

Social officers Alexis Karis, Victoria Petruzzi, Lizzie Stallings, Margo Elder and Erin Poerschke received 2rd Runner Up in that category.

Elisa Kelley was a finalist in the Senior Solo Division. Kingsley Credeur and Maddie Sheedlo received 1st Runner up in the Duet Division.

Nicole Miller, Amy Redmond and Elisa Kelley received 2nd Runner Up in the Trio Division. Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer Spring Registration Now Open Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls ages 4 to 18 for the spring season. Games start on April 7, 2012. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal playing time, opportunities to play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive coaching and more. No tryouts are required.

Registration fee includes a full uniform (shirt, shorts and socks), trophy, trained positive coaches, nice fields and background checks on all volunteers. All major credit cards are accepted.

Registration schedule and fees: Through February 6th: $85 Online February 7th – March 5th: $90 Online March 6th – 19th: $95 Online March 20th and After: $100 Online Coaches will call players to schedule practice by April 3rd. All Twelve Viper Patrol members achieve Arrow of Light! Pack 435 celebrated the graduation of twelve fifth grade cub scouts of the Viper Patrol from Copeland Elementary Pack 435 in December 2011. These boys all earned the highest achievement of Cub Scouts, the Arrow of Light They were treated to a wonderful campfire ceremony to celebrate their achievement performed by Boy Scouts from the Order of the Arrow. Later, at the Pack meeting, they received their awards, watched by family and friends and the Pack 435 community. All these boys will now move on in their lives, having made friends and shared many experiences in Cub Scouts that will set them on the right path. Ten of the group have already chosen to move forward with local Boy Scout Troops. Congratulations to them all. The Cy Falls High School 2012 Project Prom committee is excited to announce our annual Casino Night, “Denim & Diamonds,” to be held on Saturday, February 18, 2012. The Cy-Fair Women’s Club held its first business meeting for the year on January 5th. On February 2nd, we plan to continue our business meeting and hope to play Bunco if time permits. During the beginning portion of our February meeting we will have Nancie Craft visit with our group to offer us great deals for Rodeo Carnival Tickets.

We are looking forward to visiting with her.

CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community, so all funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community, as well.

Membership for the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ.

Our meetings begin with social time and refreshments at 7:00 PM immediately followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at the corner of Queenston and West Road.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-theBoot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will also be out March 10th, April 14th and May 12th to collect funds for the campaign.

The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas.

On Sunday, February 19th, the Bishop of the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Bishop Janice Huie, will be in northwest Houston to consecrate the new West Road Campus of Cornerstone United Methodist Church. The West Road Campus of Cornerstone United Methodist Church located at 18081 West Road (across from the CFISD Berry Center) currently consists of a worship center and education wing. The 12.84 acre plot of land was purchased by Cornerstone in 2004. The new worship center was opened in October, 2010 and the education wing was opened in August, 2011. Cornerstone’s main campus is located at 15919 Ridge Park Dr. (across from Lowery Elementary School). The Ridge Park Campus is currently up for sale and following the sale of the property, Cornerstone hopes to continue adding to the West Road Campus with the addition of a Phase 3 building project. The “Consecration Ceremony” will be part of the Sunday morning worship service at 10:45 AM. Although Cornerstone normally has three worship services each Sunday, in honor of this special event, there will only be one service that day. Following the worship service and consecration ceremony, Cornerstone will host a “Meet and Greet the Bishop” reception in the education wing. How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. La Leche League is an international nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed.

Breastfeeding is a simple and natural process, but you may need support and information on the correct positioning of the baby at the breast, working and breastfeeding, avoiding problems and overcoming any difficulties that may occur. Knowing other women who have breastfed their babies can be helpful and reassuring.

Having accurate, up-to-date information is also important. Attending La Leche League meetings can help you learn about breastfeeding from other nursing mothers. At these monthly meetings, mothers share not only their questions and concerns but also the benefits and joys of breastfeeding. Being in touch with La Leche League can give you the network of support you need. There are numerous meeting locations all over the Houston area. But soon after the little miracle arrives so do all the questions and sometimes, without any clear answers.

The Mothers of Young Children (MYC) group was organized by St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church to minister to families with young children throughout the Northwest Houston community. Both stay at home and working parents are invited to participate in the group. The group supports and prays for one another, shares information and ideas on child rearing and builds lasting friendships. Most importantly, MYC’s focus is on God and God’s presence in families.
