We love our community and so should you!

Besides being a nuisance, unleashed dogs and uncollected dog waste is a serious problem for our Association.

Next time you’re tempted to let your dog roam free or leave your dog’s droppings on the lawn, please remember these facts: 1. The Environmental Protection Agency is becoming aggressive about enforcing the Clean Water Act. Our Association could be fined if dog waste goes uncollected.

2. Unleashed dogs are not more likely to defecate in neighbor’s yards. Uncollected dog waste may lead to a special assessment.

If fined by the EPA, the Association could face a potential special assessment that would be levied against all members - not just dog owners.

3. The appearance and quality of the common areas are known to affect home sales - not just for how much they sell, but how quickly.

4. The more residents complain about dog waste, the more time the manager must spend on enforcement rather than serving the Association.

5. Uncollected dog waste spreads disease and attracts rodents who feed on pet waste.

We love dogs - we really do. We also love our community! That is why the Association is committed to enforcing the county leash law so all residents may enjoy our community.

According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years! Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you.

We trust we can count on you for voluntary compliance with the leash law. We don’t like to call animal control, but we won’t have any choice if your dog is running free.

LEASH LAW “Harris County”

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.

Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.”

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA

• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621.

• The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer.

• The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land.

• The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.

• President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795.

• The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817.

• Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a

• Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held.

• President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state.

• Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year.

• Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson.

• The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s.

• Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States.

• When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin).

• On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock.

• By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes.

If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots.

• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away.

• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth.

• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now.

Keep up spraying program and water deeply.

• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow.

• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap.

• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens.

• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant.

• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

RECIPES Banana Sour Cream Bread

Ingredients: 1/4 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3/4 cup butter 3 cups white sugar 3 eggs 6 very ripe bananas, mashed 1 (16 ounce) container sour cream 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 teaspoons baking soda 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).

Grease four 7x3 inch loaf pans. In a small bowl, stir together 1/4 cup white sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Dust pans lightly with cinnamon and sugar mixture. In a large bowl, cream butter and 3 cups sugar. Mix in eggs, mashed bananas, sour cream, vanilla and cinnamon. Mix in salt, baking soda and flour. Stir in nuts. Divide into prepared pans.

Bake for 1 hour, until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Sugar Coated Pecans

Ingredients: 1 egg white 1 tablespoon water 1 pound pecan halves 1 cup white sugar 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C).

Grease one baking sheet. In a mixing bowl, whip together the egg white and water until frothy. In a separate bowl, mix together sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add pecans to egg whites, stir to coat the nuts evenly. Remove the nuts, and toss them in the sugar mixture until coated. Spread the nuts out on the prepared baking sheet. Bake at 250 degrees F (120 degrees C) for 1 hour. Stir every 15 minutes.

10 REASONS TO BE THANKFUL FOR YOUR KIDS

Parenthood is like twenty years of survival training. You learn to imagine the worst. Did you pack the diapers, wipes and extra clothes?

Have you planned for any disaster? Who needs TV and movies with children around? They make your life less boring. For ten silly reasons to be thankful for your kids see my list of suggestions below: 1. Money - If you had too much money, you’d get into trouble.

Children help you spend it. I ate all the food. My shoes are too small.

It’s pizza day at school!

2. Quality Control - Is your bed well made? Are you doors well hinged? With kids, you’ll always know. They’re like quality control testers for all of your things. The spindle came off the railing!

8. Exercise - Becoming a parent is better than joining the gym.

Kids make you chase them around. You’re constantly cleaning, and packing and lugging their things. Mommy, I want to play tag!

9. Self-Esteem - Mommy, you’re beautiful. You’re a really good singer. Kids give daily compliments. Even when you know they’re wrong, it makes you feel good. You could win American Idol!

10. Embarrassing - After having children, you won’t get embarrassed.

They make you less self-conscious. Kids leave the house wearing two pairs of pants. Is that snot or puke on your shirt?

3. Immune System - Who needs a flu shot with children around?

They keep your immune system working. They bring germs home from school and spread them around. I want a hug and kiss!

After having children, nothing seems loud. Kids make lots of noise.

Who knew having a shower could feel like a luxury? I got a full night sleep! Who knew reading the paper for five whole minutes could feel like a gift from above? Having children can make you appreciate life.

Be thankful for your kids!

4. Silly - What better excuse could you have to act silly? Parents can run through the sprinkler. They can try out new toys and play video games. I bought it for the kids!

Katy ISD’s tradition of increasing student participation and strong performance on Advanced Placement (AP) exams continues as the district recently learned that each one of its six high school campuses showed an increase in the number of students participating in the exams. In addition, every high school campus exceeded the state and national percentage of AP students making a qualifying score of 3 or better on the exams.

Katy ISD is among the 388 U.S. public school districts (one of only 23 in Texas) to be listed on the 2011 College Board AP Achievement List.

This list identifies districts that simultaneously achieved increases in access to AP courses while maintaining or improving the rate of students earning a score of 3 or better on the exams – the score that generally qualifies a student for college credit. In May 2011, more than 3,000 Katy ISD students took more than 7,200 AP exams, with 79 percent of the exams earning a score of 3 or better. This reflects a 24 percent increase from 2010 in the number of exams earning these high scores.

Advanced Placement and PreAP courses are designed to challenge students beyond grade level academic courses and prepare them for success in future advanced coursework. Katy ISD recognizes that support and encouragement from the campus, the teacher, and parents are critical to student success. Therefore, the district follows an inclusive enrollment model for AP and PreAP courses that provides support systems for student success.

Katy ISD offers AP courses in English, mathematics, science, social studies, fine arts, computer science and languages other than English.

Bear Creek Baptist - Upward Basketball and Cheerleading

Bear Creek Baptist Church is offering Upward Basketball and Cheerleading for K-8th Grade. Cost is $75. They will have one hour of practices a week and on Saturdays they will have a game for an hour. Every practice and game takes place on our Campus. It is a great place where they will learn new skills for the game and cheer.

Registration started in October. Our first evaluation will be Saturday, November 5th, from 10:30 AM -1:30 PM in our Gym on the Sonic side of our Church. The following week, we will have more evaluations, Mon., Tues and Thurs., Nov. 7th, 8th and 10th between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Each child is needed to attend during one of these times.

We will kick off the season with a Clinic on Sat., Dec. 3 and practices will begin the next week starting Dec. 5th. Chamber members and non-members are invited to participate in the discussion on how the region addresses mobility challenges in the face of continued growth. There will be two sessions with a luncheon in between. The featured speaker is Commissioner Ned J. Holmes. Holmes is a commissioner of the Texas Transportation Commission, which oversees statewide activities of the Texas Department of Transportation. Additional forum speakers will be: Steve Clark, PE, ARUP; Mark Ellis, Gulf Coast Rail District and Texas State Representative Allen Fletcher.

Currently, the chamber is working with the Texas Department of Transportation on the re-designation application process of U.S. 290 to an interstate status. The status change could possibly allow additional federal funds toward the proposed improvements of U.S. 290 along with allowing greater visibility for domestic and international firms seeking to relocate in the Cy-Fair Houston market sector.

In addition, the construction of the SH 99; Segment E (I-10 West to U.S. 290) has begun with an anticipated completion over the next 18-24 months. Once completed, Segment E will allow an alternative route for commuters and businesses along U.S. 290 traveling to the West Houston Energy Corridor.

The Mobility Forum will be Thursday, November 3rd from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress. Individual tickets are $60 and sponsorship tables of 10 range from $600 to $2,500.
