USUFRU C T prince of wales bridge rehabilitation

The Prince of Wales bridge, constructed in 1880, is a multi-span Pratt truss bridge that runs across the Ottawa river, connecting Ottawa to Gatineau. It served its purpose as a railway connection between the two cities for exactly a hundred years, but as railway transportation use declined and more efficient routes were developed, the line was abandoned in 1980. The Prince of Wales bridge has become a well- known hangout spot, as not only does it give its visitors an “enter at your own risk” feeling, it is a secluded site in which one can go to reflect on their thoughts and appreciate the beauty of the two cities coming together. There is a certain thrill that people get from the bridge’s lack of protective measures and it is this sense of danger that keeps people coming back. This project will be taking into consideration, all aspects of the bridge from its historical purpose as a connector and a means of transportation, to its modern use as a leisure spot with a slight ‘kick’. Usufruct is a rehabilitation project that ranges in scale. It has been designed in three stages with programs that pay respect to the three main physical attributes of the bridge; The steel trusses, the stone piers and the railway tracks. Right Studio Final Critiques Setup

10

The bridge stretches 989m and consists of two sections, North and South with 7 and 6 spans respectively, separated by Lemeiux Island; a secluded piece of land in the middle of the river housing one of two water purification plants for the city of Ottawa. The Prince of Wales bridge served its purpose as a railway connection between the two cities for exactly a hundred years, but as railway transportation use declined and more efficient

routes were developed, the line was abandoned in 1980. Today the bridge is structurally incapable of handling the weight of a train but is more than sufficient for pedestrian and biking purposes, so it is currently illegally used as an informal crossing. The bridge has become some sort of destination point for both cities as it has breathtaking views of the river, as well as downtown Ottawa and Gatineau.

The “To Sit – To Lounge” units have been designed in a modular method that allows for a multitude of combinations in order to achieve the desired seating and lounging arrangements for the bridge. The system is designed with Japanese wood joinery techniques that use no screws or fasteners but are more than capable of lasting through the harsh Ottawa winters. In order to maintain a light touch, the units are made out of a series of floating wood pieces that allow for easy assembly and disassembly.

The original purpose of the bridge was not only to be part of a larger network of trans-Canada railway systems, but to also serve as a connection between two cities separated by a body of water. In order to incorporate the existing railway tracks into the new pedestrian bridge and pay homage to its original intention, the Drink n’ Ride apparatuses were developed. Taking cues from railway carts and beer bikes, the Drink n’ Ride is to be an elevated multiperson social commuter that allows its passengers to interact with the bridge through the experience of traveling its tracks from end to end, while creating the opportunity to socialize with each other. Using easily accessible materials like wood and light-weight steel, the units are designed with the hopes of being a simple template for high school and college after school programs to create a more elaborate apparatus. 1. Institutional Project Lisbon, Portugal Grad Studio II - Adaptive Re-use Studio Professor Ricardo Carvalho (Directed Studies Abroad) Revit, AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator

RE-USE THE CITY co-working space + kindergarten

This project focuses on the adaptive re use of an old industrial building close to the coast of the Rio Tajo at the border of Lisbon. The former Universidade Autonoma de Lisboa architecture building is being renovated and reused as a co-working space with a kindergarten. The main design strategy for the building involves the addition of a two-story monolithic concrete shell on top of the existing fourth floor, while maintaining the original faรงade, it creates a stark contrast between old and new. All new additions on the interior are cladded in concrete panels to match the monolith and to keep a material continuity to emphasize their independence. This theme is carried on throughout the entire building on multiple levels and is especially perceptible within the individual units of program, which are all centered between the existing walls and slightly elevated off the ground to highlight the separation. The concept for the interior focuses on emphasizing a visual connection through the building. New windows have been created on the West faรงade and the interior units are strategically placed to allow for full visibility from the street on the East to the new park on the West. This visual connection is key to the success of both programs as is aids in maintaining the safety of the children in the space while creating a true sense of community in the building. The project is designed to follow the master plan that is to come into implementation in the near future, with the neighboring buildings being residential, an increased density is imminent. A co-working space with a

kindergarten would create a place for both adults and children to interact within a safe and controlled environment, with spaces that allow for private and public activities, it is the ideal program for its location.

02 STUDIO vanier community workshop + digital fab. lab

Located at the gateway of Vanier, Les Atelier Fab de Vanier is to be a workshop for the large community of artists in the neighbourhood. Vanier is struggling to define a new identity that brings a positive spin to its history as a low to middle income neighbourhood. With this in mind, the project is designed to help and support the growth of more business, arts community and institutional programs in the area to spur economic development and bring back life to the Main Street and Vanier as whole. Les Atelier Fab De Vanier consists of various workshop programs offering the artists in the neighbourhood spaces to create and exhibit their work. The design of the building focuses on showcasing the ironic process of creating: the use of heavy machinery to produce delicate and fragile pieces. The North East block, the heavy side, houses the wood and metal shops along with the digital fabrication lab and robot arm stone cutter. This area can be converted into an open space to allow for public viewing of the artists at work. The North West block represents the delicate finished products with its elevated structure and light weight facade that allows people to see into the gallery space. This section is elevated in order to accommodate a secondary exterior gallery space, allowing the public to engage with street art and allow the complex to connect more with the community. The ground and second floors house the heavy workshop spaces. These are designed with an open concept for collaborative work with areas that can be converted into open spaces, creating a connection to the exterior for public viewing. The interior has exposed structure and large garage doors to allow the movement of materials. These doors open up to extend the assembly space outside to allow for more room to create larger projects.

The upper floors of the building house public spaces such as a gallery, a cafe, forum spaces and artists’ studios and residences. Theses spaces are also designed with an open concept to create room for free movement around the learning spaces. The workspace/ learning spaces follow this concept as well, to allow a variation of work space layouts that tend to artist’s needs.

PA R K + H O U S I N G incremental housing in vanier

Using a holistic approach to design and living, situated just off Montreal Road on the site of existing schools, PARK+ housing offers affordable housing as a catalyst for sensitive densification and revitalization in Vanier. Allowing communities to access their most fundamental needs (including local urban market gardening/light food production) provide important neighboring social interaction spaces, promoting sustainability, community building and intergenerational activities. Still affected by its challenges of the past, Vanier, traditionally a low working class neighborhood is still struggling with poverty and crime. This amplifies the consequence of Ottawa’s poor social/affordable housing policies, since a great number of people require some sort of subsidized housing. The massing is sensitive to both the existing small house vernacular of the area whilst incrementally expanding to show a landscape form. Sensitive articulation, ground floor access and terraces help in neighborhood watch and crime prevention with other spaces for leisure and exercise. PARK+Housing is designed be one of Vanier’s newest affordable developments aiming for social, environmental and economic benefits.

Commercial Project Ottawa, On Undergrad Studio 3 - Design Studio Professor John Cook Rihno, Vray, Photoshop, Illustrator

GALAXIE ottawa science center

In the cityscape of Ottawa’s china town district, a sleepless low lying roar of cars and indiscriminate chatter can be heard everywhere, hand in hand with the noisy lights. With so much happening on the ground it’s hard for its denizens to calmly look up and enjoy what few stars can be seen. As such it was my utmost inclination to once again re invite the people of the city to the beautiful gravitas of space; the stars, constellations, and a boundlessly opportunistic infinity. To do this, the inclusion of a sphere representing our celestial body as it’s hearth. Within, and around this hearth, people are invited to the orbit and experience the full beauty of all directions, corner less and looping planetarium. Voids and ruptures in the walls cleverly placed aim to recreate the feeling of looking at a constellation from the inside, where as the opposite becomes true at night. The building is meant to accommodate the public to multiple degrees, through a commercial space, a book selling space as well as public plaza. It also acts as a place of residence for a local astronomer. Being conveniently located at the corner of Bronson and Somerset Boulevard in Ottawa makes it easily accessible for customers and visitors.
